- With Lost River released, we've been working on multiple fronts. Tommi and Andrei are converting all the animals to the new, improved Saga AI. Raul has been rewriting a core animal control system that had gotten overly complicated. Mikko is working on other improvements. We’ll share more about all of these things in the coming months.
I've been busy tackling the many things required to play the full quest arc on the Amethyst Mountain map. This involves creating the other seasons of the year, new den sites, new rendezvous sites, and many other things. While working on several new rock dens, I realized that I had never quite gotten a handle on the types of rocks in this area of Yellowstone. So this past week, while recovering from an unexpected (and I suppose long overdue) bout of Covid, I again dug into the geology of Amethyst Mountain and Specimen Ridge. This area has a complicated geologic history, with many geologic events over the millennia, so very different types of rocks are visible in different spots, Primarily, the ridge and mountain are made of conglomerate -- which is basically pebbles stuck in dried mud. formed by lahars (mudflows) from two ancient volcanoes.
So today's devblog looks at the process of reworking the rock textures on the cliffs and other outcrops. I know that everyone really wants updates on the Saga -- and those are coming! But this one is for the handful of players out there who like geology. Enjoy!

ohoho those rocks are looking good! It's gonna be so exciting to raise pups on Amethyst-- brings me back to the old pre-2.5 days before Slough Creek ever released when people used to pretend that clusters of fallen trees in the burn were dens 😂 Man, now I'm hoping there will be at least one den up in that area, just to bring that full circle xD
I've always admired your dedication to realism and accuracy, and I find I must commend you again for striking the challenging balance between realism and gameplay! Truly, the way y'all approach game design always blows me away. You've done a tremendous job walking that fine line, and every new update we get just serves to reinforce that!

WolfQuest means so much to me. I’m literally learning more about animals and the environment from this video game than I am in my science class at school. I’m not a rock person but it’s great that the devs are constantly keeping us updated through all the things their doing
While I may not be as enthusiastic about rocks as other people may be, I love seeing the behind the scenes of how games come to be. And the love the team puts into making it perfect just makes me excited for what will happen next!

1:39 holy cow, it's been 6 years already? I only started playing in 2020 but it still feels like only a couple years ago since this game started being made. Time flies lol
It's also been almost 2.5 years since I first went to Yellowstone, I've gone every year since and I just went this winter, saw the whole Junction Butte pack on top of specimen ridge (this was after the pack hadn't been seen for a few days, and the last sightings were of about 7-8 wolves, so it was great to see all 20 or so of them) and some other things :)

I love the detail the team puts into this game! As a behavioral ecologist, I absolutely LOVE how seriously the team takes the environment and the commitment to realistically portraying such a beloved area as Yellowstone. And as someone from the Pacific Northwest, who grew up on and around the older evidence of the Yellowstone Hotspot, the geology of this particular supervolcano has a special place in my heart. Thank you for giving it the attention it deserves!

I love seeing the videos about geology, it's so interesting to think about! I especially loved the areas in the new Lost River map where you can see the mudslides that covered some of the roads, and the path they've carved through the landscape!!

Someone who has played since the very first version of wolf quest, it’s amazing seeing so much life breathed into the amethyst mountain map :) I’ve always wanted to experience it in the summer.
Also, my best friend and I played this game as kids and it was a major influencer in getting careers in environmental science. I’m now a wildlife biologist (mostly with waterfowl, though I had some lovely wolf encounters last year at work) and she is a geologist. She certainly loves the geology themed dev blogs!

My favorite little activity in Amethyst Mountain is jumping the gaps in the bluffs at the tops.
In the Lost River classic map there are the rocks at The Two Step between the waterfall and it's really fun to jump from one side to the other.
If you take a still picture at just the right time and angle it looks really dramatic.
I would really enjoy more wolf parkour in the game.
