New Injury System (Welcome back, Limpy!)

  • Being a wolf is dangerous business. You have to stick your face right into the thick of it, biting animals that weigh three or or four times more than you do. Wolves can take a beating and survive -- but sometimes they get hurt. So, to represent that, beyond the damage and health system, we've been thinking about adding an injury system to the game for a long time. But the question has always been how to make injuries into good gameplay. Having just a random change of getting an injury, and a penalty to an attribute, doesn't seem fair (even though that's realistic).
    We mulled over this, periodically, for a couple years, and then, last summer George came up with the idea of injury tiers: You can get a minor injury any time, with a small penalty, and then, while you have that minor injury and before it heals, you have a chance of getting a major injury. So once you have a minor injury, you must decide how much risk you want to take on, given your current situation. This adds a nice element of risk and reward for player tactics.
    So we refined that into what we've now built in the game. At any time, when taking damage, there's small of getting a minor injury. If you do, that injury stresses your body (and perhaps you're compensating a bit for it), so then you're at risk of getting a major injury, which has a much bigger penalty. Both kinds of injuries heal -- minor heals faster than major, of course, and both heal faster when your health is high. To keep track of your injuries, we've revised the Pack Info layout so you can see exactly what's going on: what kind of injuries you currently have, and what effects they have.
    Most injuries don't have a physical manifestation, but major leg injuries do -- which means we're bringing back Limpy! In WolfQuest 2.7/Classic, Limpy was based on a real Yellowstone wolf who had a permanent limp. But wolves also get injuries which cause temporary limps, and that’s what we are representing in this new injury system. And now you can get a leg injury and thus a limp on any leg (not just the rear right leg, like the original Limpy).
    This new injury system is coming in the next patch (probably in several weeks) along with a new DLC pack featuring cosmetic injuries (and ten new coats)! Stay tuned for more about that!

    I wonder if your wolf has more strength, the less likely they will get a major injury! Also maybe depending on what stage of life they’re in. Older/very young wolves may get Injured more than a wolf in their prime

    • @HellhoundsHunt
      @HellhoundsHunt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I think a wolf with more strength would not be less likely to get a major injury, since that's just their damage output / how strong their jaws are / how much muscle they have. That buff may be more likely for the health stat, since the health stat increases how tough your wolf is and how much damage they can take. If they did include a feature like that, they'd need to add an advantage to the other stats as well otherwise the stats for wolves would be unbalanced.

    Any time your wolf gets injured, it has a chance of scarring and becoming a permanent mark on your wolf

    YOOOO, this looks great so far. This makes the game so much more fun to play and more dangerous to hunt, I use to stock bull elk carcasses and now I’ll have to be so much more cautious when hunting. Also, what if you add a bleeding system? If you bite a elks leg, neck, Etc hard enough maybe the elk will bleed until it rests and stops being attacked or the elk or wolf is dead.

    This looks incredible, and I adore how realistic you are all trying to make this game! I'm genuinely excited for the challenge! *Applause* I do have a couple questions, if you don't mind! I know that the player and your mate can get injured, but what about rival wolves? Can they also cause injury to the player? Can the player injure rival wolves? I have felt recently that rival wolves do an unfair amount of damage to compensate for their AI (which I think their AI is pretty good, or maybe I just need to get better at the game), so I suppose I'm concerned that with their current ratio, and if they can inflict injury to the player, they may become a bit overpowered. Again, I'm VERY excited for this, I'm just seeking to understand if this is something I need to look out for and possibly just avoid stranger wolves altogether. Thanks in advance for any response and all the love that goes into this game!

  • @wolvesforlife4981

    It seems whenever I think this game couldn't get any better, the devs just come up with something beyond imagination.
    An limp is something I'd always loved from WolfQuest 2.7, and I've missed it, honestly. But I had no doubt that it would be back but this is far past my expectation.
    An injury is something naturally occurring in the wild and I love that devs aren't afraid to add something this ambitious, risky, and rage inducing (yes, I can see myself already raging at getting a limp) to the game.
    I can't wait to see what else comes to WolfQuest, making it even more realistic

  • @savannahb3573
    @savannahb3573 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    About what you said about your wolf starving to death if he had two broken legs/wasn't able to hunt, yea that's very, very true. I was lucky enough to get to go to Africa last summer and we went on a safari in Southern Africa outside Krugar national park (which was just beyond incredible). One night there we witnessed a pride of lionesses harassing a male lion (to try and keep him away from their cubs) who, like in the video, had a broken leg. We actually saw a legitimate lion skirmish that night (different groups chasing each other around, *lots* of roaring and a few blows exchanged), but our guide did tell us that sadly, the injured lion would die from his wound. He said that if a lion was able to eat he could basically recover from anything, but this lion couldn't hunt (and they weren't allowed to interfere) and would, sadly, die.

But I am really worried now Because i have a wolf Bruno who just loves to get himself into trouble and I know that for most of his game plays he's just going to be limping away, all four of his legs would probably break i wouldn't be surprised if he was dragging himself because he's been getting so many injuries that this is just amazing and I love how they've added it in so that it occurs like it would in the wild properly instead of Us adding it into whichever wolf we please I absolutely love it thank you so much wolfquest team. I would hope this would be a good way to also teach caution for players (because a lot of them will throw themselves at bison and get killed). Like hunting a bull elk would be more likely to injure you than a calf or low health cow elk. Maybe hunting with packmates could also help a little, encouraging teamwork rather than downing half the herd solo. Obviously injuries can still happen, but it’s also a good way to encourage some gameplay elements.

    Yes PLEASE! I've played this game for a decade and accurate is no longer a challenge to me anymore, having this will be AMAZING for making wolfquest truly challenging again for me!

    Aaahh how exciting!!! I knew they were going to bring back Limpy at some point but I didn't think they'd go above and beyond and add a whole injury system, that's an awesome surprise

    WHO ELSE'S FAVOURITE SKIN IN 2.7 WAS LIMPY?! I PLAYED AS LIMPY ALL THE TIME!!! Hopefully I can buy AE for my birthday this year, it's just so amazing, and the work you all put into it, I can't thank this team enough.

    Nothing is awesome without a challenge! WolfQuest has been my main star in the many games I play, and I'm so happy to see it evolve this much!
    Hopefully we don't see the last of it, but we see the best of it for the following years to come. Thank you again, WolfQuest! 🥰

    You know what would be cool? If you could grow up multiplayer wolves. Me and my Irl friend play wolf quest together sometimes, and we hate making the pups from multiplayer, because we don't know what the coat will look like. Me and I bet a lot of other players will like that. Another cool thing would be that you could add the pup only coats to a DLC pack or make them less rare. My dream coat is the black Pup only coat with the brown smudge on its muzzle. Amazing game!

    i love this idea so much, very exciting! though i think it would make more sense and be more immersive if the major injury was applied to the location where the minor one was, to show it was damaged even worse by the continued activity, thats what i expected at first, or at least maybe the chance of the major injury being applied there could be much higher? Regardless its a really cool thing to have in the game. We really appreciate the care and thought yall put into this game, i cant wait to see what you have coming!

    Wow! The new injury system looks so cool and realistic! I thought it could be cool if there could be a higher chance for the older wolves (7+ in age) to get injuries more often because their bodies are older.

    • @WolfQuestGame
      @WolfQuestGame  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yellowstone researchers have found that older wolves are also smarter about when they engage in dangerous activities so it balances out.

    This is definitely my favorite game out of all the games I play. I like animal simulation games but I always had the same problem, it wasn’t realistic at all, but then I found this and love that you keep it as realistic as possible while still being enjoyable to play. Just all around, amazing game.

    I love how you guys keep adding so many fun features to the game, always makes me wanna come back and play more! :) A suggestion though. Say if your wolf gets injured and stays at the den more to rest maybe then the mate can bring food to the den for you? Like a hare or a meat chunk. Mates already go off and do hunts solo be it hares or bigger prey so maybe that's something you could add so your wolf doesn't starve if injuries could get worse later. On that note can mates also get injured?

    • @WolfQuestGame
      @WolfQuestGame  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, mates can get injured.

  • @birb70
    @birb70 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I would suggest on the Accurate mode, some injuries can be permanent *AND* even more major injuries that can only happen to your mate or pups in both Challenging and Accurate mode (or just Accurate), for example a back injury that can be pretty similar to Briarlight, a character from Warrior Cats (idk how to explain it otherwise haha). So If its your mate, they will just not be able to hunt until it heals. If its your pup, they will just be slow and a very high change they died before or very early after reaching adulthood. Thanks for reading and have a nice day/night. (Enjoy the next 24 hours of the day XD)

    love the realism with this game, and how it keeps things interesting! i personally find challenge to make a game all the more exciting, so an update like this is something i've been hoping for for a long time. thank you for the heart and thought put into this game!
    a suggestion: the limp animation bothers me just a little, with how the leg is constantly raised. perhaps in the future, it could be added to the animation to where they can walk on that leg slightly (like a skip in the animation?). Other than that, I think the limp and it's animation is wonderful! thank you

    • @WolfQuestGame
      @WolfQuestGame  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks. There are lots of nuances to being injured that aren't represented with the animations but we'll keep feedback in mind if we are able to add more.

  • @twlightnightfall1315

    Bit of a suggestion/question thing. If a pup were to get grabbed by a bear or cougar, could they have the chance of getting an injury? I honestly think this would be rather interesting to see. Along with this (referring to the DLC here), if a pup gets an injury, maybe there could be a small chance were that an injury can turn into one if the cosmetics when they become adult.
