    I was fortunate enough to grow up playing Sparkster here in Brazil. My father did not want to spend a lot of money on a fancy game, so he picked up an obscure and "cheaper" one, and it turned out to be ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. My brother and I loved it a lot. Anything you play and love as a child becomes excessively special later on. I had no Link to the Past cartridge, and even though I know it was one of the best games ever, I still prefer Sparkster. It's deeply subjective.

      Quando eu era criança, meu pai foi para Aparecida do Norte e pedi pra ele trazer um cartucho do Sim City, que era o jogo que eu mais alugava nas locadoras.
      Ele trouxe, mas foi enganado pelo vendedor: A capa era, de fato, Sim City, mas o jogo era Sonic Wings, de avião.
      Chorei muito (eu tinha uns 8 anos), mas joguei muito. Chamava os vizinhos para jogar comigo, fazíamos campeonatos, etc. Adorei o "erro".
      Bons tempos. ;-;

      I know exactly what you mean. There will never be anything like Super Bomberman 1. When It comes to the funniest memories. I can't tell how many hours, days, weeks, months I spent playing It with my friends. We made whole tournaments on Versus Battle Mode. Which was incredible and gifted us tons of laughing because this battle mode was hilarious (loosing or winning). We were all good at the game so the tournaments were extremely competitive. I know there were many sequels. Super Bomberman 2, 3, 4, Sega Saturn, Playstation, etc, BUT It never feels the same. There can't be a versus game as good as the very first Super Bomberman for Snes :)

    interesting fact about Pieces: It was made by the same people who would later go on to create Disgaea. They were known as Prism Kikaku at the time, but nowadays they're known as Nippon Ichi Software. In fact, Kitazumi Koichi, the director of Pieces, would later be the executive producer for Disgaeas 1 and 2.

    I played the hell out of Spike McFang as a kid. Everyone really needs to play it, it’s so fun. It’s pretty easy for the most part, but it’s definitely an enjoyable short action RPG.
    Plus the music is FANTASTIC.

    This is my 4th time rewatching this since first subscribing a couple years ago. I don't know what it is, but your completely believable irritability with this trope and the colorful variety of games you choose just feels so genuine. You are by far my favorite retro gaming channel next to Metal Jesus Rocks just because of your competency discussing games and passion about the subject. So this is just a fan telling future you, your video has aged extremely well, IMO.

    Run Saber is still one of my most nostalgic of games. I rented it from Blockbuster Video and loved it so much. Then by pure chance the store went on to put the rental copy up for sale, COMPLETE WITH BOX AND INSTRUCTIONS!!! I told my dad what I wanted for my birthday, and he didn't disappoint. Still own it to this day.

    U.N. SQUADRON is a game that I am so shocked NOBODY paid much attention to as it is beyond epic.The boss fight with the Wolf Pack is my favorite.The only way to improve on this classic gem is to give a 3D world to which you can move around 360 degrees.

    • @lissanelore6033
      @lissanelore6033 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dude, Upvote this girl please. U.N. Squadron is incredible.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem with UN Squadron, IMO, was how they wanted you to spend money on buying your optional weapons, BUT you ALSO needed money to buy new planes, and your starting plane is hilariously weak.
      You could attack the convoys for extra cash between missions, BUT, thanks to those stupid pillars before and after them, only a handful of weapons, or one specific plane's normal attacks can even hit the thing without getting you hit yourself, so you had to spend money to make money.
      I felt the whole grinding aspect was very unnecessary and it sapped the game of a lot of its fun-factor. Grinding convoys was not fun, especially when you'd make $20k to do it but had to spend $2-3k on weapons just to kill them, OR, buy an expensive ground-attacking plane JUST for convoys, which would set you back even more. And even then, there's a point in time where the convoys stop spawning which forces you into a regular mission whether you're prepared or not.

    • @CompBioQuest
      @CompBioQuest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im also a fan of squandron, I managed to beat it in hard and only using the first plain until the last 3 missions including the final mission which is freaking the absolute best final mission of most games....

      Sammy Lane actually that is its port name,the real name is area 88 and the us port was broken quite a bit. None of the games mentioned here were gems at all just common snes 90's shovelware which is typical for American games. I learned to read and speak Japanese so I could play the real liberation the original versions of games before they were dissected for bad programming and Terrible translations.

      I remember playing the arcade version and I loved it! The SNES version was a little different in the play mechanics area but it was cool too (and quite difficult for me strangely).
      It got me into the anime and manga Area 88. A great licensed game!

    I found UN Squadron at the arcade at my "local" amusement park, which led to me getting the SNES version. They were surprisingly different, though both shoot em ups. Known as Area 88 in Japan, this led me to one of my favorite anime series of all time. Ogre Battle and Robotrek were staples in me SNES library back in the day too.

    I’m glad you mentioned Ogre Battle. It took me 15 years of searching to find someone selling this game. This game along with Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean are of my most prized SNES games of all time, especially Ogre Battles. I’ve been working on making an in-depth real time versus mode version of this game over 2 decades. I am constantly improving and adding to it as well. It began with me looking for another game that has the same structure as Ogre Battle. Spoiler... there is no other game out there like Ogre Battle. Hero’s of Might am Magic for IOS is the closest thing we’ve ever had to this game.
    If anyone out there reads this and loves Ogre Battle’s strategy system as much as I do and you are able to make/code games please reach out to me by replying to this comment.

    I actually LOVED pieces and Ignition Factor. And Spike McFang is amazing. Played the crap out of it last summer! RoboTrek is definitely a gem and suffered from some crappy marketing and relatively limited release. Love it! Sparkster is classic. Lufia II also got some play last summer... so much fun! Beautiful art.
    Ogre Battle... the SNES gaming community was just not ready for it, but damn... so much fun and value in that game. I managed Funcolands at the time and really couldn't move these cartridges, even demoing it as much as possible. I put a chair in front of the 'arcade' so people could dig their teeth into it. I let them read the instructions. People just weren't down for the experience.

    When I was getting back to Super Nintendo, what I did was look up all the games that had a perfect score in old Nintendo Powers (Nintendomagasinet, actually).
    The games I found were: Zelda III, Super Metroid, Mega Man X and Skyblazer. (and maybe some more obvious ones, like Mario)
    I'm almost surprised Skyblazer isn't more known.

      Lol. As a kid my older simblins had this small videogame rent store. Most Snes over other consoles. I was there playing most of the time (pretending to help on work lol). Although there weren't that many cartridges available. One of those was True Lies. I played It for more than I can remember. But aways picked up the cartridge whenever there was nothing better at glance. Everyone thought this game was shitty. It's funny to see today people looking at it as a "movie based hidden jewel". And probably the best action movie based game on Snes :) your comment brought me memories.

    robotrek!!! I've always felt like the only person on the planet who knew about that game, except the people I expressly let borrow it IRL back then, who all loved it. No other game really feels anything like it that I know of, from the nice simple robot-customization to the small-area strategy-rpg like battles to the unique, cartoony tone. I could use more games like that, maybe it'll inspire some indie creator someday.
    But seriously, this kind of video is great, I don't mind watching the same kind of thing a million times by different people -- like you said, everyone has their own criteria for 'hidden gems' and I love hearing different peoples' picks and reasonings for them, so imo you shouldn't feel bad for making this or any similar type of future video.

    Ogre Battle is my 3rd favorite game of all time behind only Fire Emblem: The Sealed Sword and Pokemon Crystal Version. The story is incredible, and so layered, and so confidently told. I mean, if you skip the optional missions or don't visit every single town on every map, you can miss entire plot arcs, some of which are seriously moving!
    My least favorite game of all time? Definitely The Lion King. No matter how well I play, I always end up getting my dad killed in a wildebeest stampede!

  • @bianodias2000

    U.N Squadron was popular here in Brazil. As for Ogre Battle, I would say it's one the best hidden gems in the history of gaming. Different endings, tons of strategy. Replay value should be in it's name.

    Some more obscure/overlooked SNES hidden gems :
    Actraiser 2 (this game is really fun once you get the hang of the flying mechanics)
    Congo's Caper
    Joe & Mac 2
    Loony Tunes B-Ball
    Lost Vikings 1 & 2
    Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems
    Metal Warriors
    Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the Movie
    Prehistorik Man
    Saturday Night Slam Masters
    Super Adventure Island II

    U.N Squadron is actually based on a manga called Area 88. The whole tie-in got scrapped in the west since the series was never localized here, but the game probably ended up being more well known and revered than the manga.
