A Simple Way To Learn Triads On Guitar [By Shape & By Position]

  • In this video, you learn all about triads on guitar, and how they will totally transform the way you play chords on the instrument.
Triads open up the fretboard to you as far as playing chords are concerned, and will provide you with much greater scope when playing rhythm guitar parts.
In this lesson, you learn the major and minor triads on the top 3 strings of the guitar. You will first learn each shape in isolation, before being shown 2 key ways to train triads so you know instantly where they are on the fretboard:
    1. By Shape
First, you learn how to voice a chord progression with each triad shape, one at a time
    2. By Position
Next, you learn how to voice a progression with a mix of triad shapes that allow you to stay in the same position on guitar
Both training methods combined will ensure you get the triad chord shapes down so you can easily use them in your own guitar playing.

This has got to be the best most simple and understandable explanation of triads that I have come across. I've watched multiple videos on it and I even have face to face guitar lessons with an instructor and this guy was the only one that made me really understand the basics of it and how to use it. Thank you so much!

I found your channel today and I am amazed at the material in this lesson. I have been playing (simply for self entertainment) rhythm and lead guitar since 1964; I am a copy-cat with a huge repertoire of songs. However, I have never investigated triads and this lesson has opened a new avenue of discovery for me to shoot down. I am looking forward to the journey; many thanks!

I have been using inversions for years, but not really understanding the underlying mechanics of it, just learned a couple of shapes that had inversions and the rest you just know when it sounds right, but that is limiting. I always fall back to the familiar ones (kind of like acoustic players do with the cowboy chords).
This is fantastic. You provide the shape, but also the underlying reason for the shapes and how to adapt that to different keys and chord progressions. I look forward to practicing this and incorporating it into more of my performances. Can't wait to watch some more videos from you. Thank you!

    Pat Martino’s “Symmetrical Parental Forms”:
    1) The Augmented triad (1-3-#5)… so play 554 on GBE for a Caug. triad. LOWER any one note to create 3 different MAJOR triads; RAISE any one note to create 3 MINOR triads (the relative Minors of the 3 Majors). So any AUGMENTED triad (easy to find on the guitar) is the SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORM of 6 other triads, 3 major triads and their 3 relative minor triads.
    2) The Diminished 7th chord (1-b3-b5-bb7)… so play 4545 on DGBE. LOWER any one note to create 4 different DOMINANT 7th chords (1-3-5-b7); RAISE any one note to create 4 different HALF-DIMINISHED 7th chords (1-b3-b5-b7). So each easy-to-find Diminished 7th chord acts as the SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORM for 8 other 7th chords, 4 Dominant 7ths and 4 Half-Diminished 7ths.
    - Pat Martino was a genius who taught us this way of finding other chord forms. It is definitely worth learning and experimenting with.
    RIP Pat Martino.

My singing voice has let me down, so now I want to be able to just pick up the guitar and play something that sounds good by itself, not just chords, not just melody, but a blend of both. Certainly a lot here to digest and it provides the tools for doing this applying these same principles to the triad shapes for other common progressions we choose to work with. Also, some great material and inspiration here to try to see what can be done on strings other than 1-2-3 as well. This really helps me begin to see the fretboard differently. Thanks so much!

Brilliant. Admittedly I did stop the video half way through and started doing the shapes closer together in the similar position, which you do later in the lesson. So I like to think that means I understood the idea due to you making it clear and simple. Really a very, very good. Thank you.

Sounds like you definitely have the right idea. Playing by position and by shape both have their merits, so it's not the case of one over the other.

Well, I just have to say that is a phenomenal presentation integrating theory with the ability to play. And oh boy I have a lot of work to do to learn it. I’ve been playing for nine years, and now I understand triads with first and second and versions. And I want to learn more!

@@acousticguitarlessons With the shape that bars the B and E, say on the fifth fret, then fret the G string at the sixth fret, gives an A, and completes the triad. That's what the lesson demonstrated. But I noticed I can use the D string at the 7th fret, and it makes a beautiful A. So that form is movable and you get an extra root note at the lowest position. I understand it's not a triad and the root note appears twice. My jazz friend tells me that doubling any note is a mistake. Do you agree? For me, I like fretting the D string, to either use, or fret so that I'm safe if my strumming misses a bit. In this example, I could have three A's, or, I could include the base open E string.

Thank you Simon for your videos on using triads. I'm trying to learn them as you say by "position" where the three triads of any key are in close proximity to each other so I don't have to jump up and down the neck. This is a refreshing change from always using root 6 & 5 bar chords. I know the triads of the 3,2,1 strings and 4,3,2 strings but didn't know how to do triads on the 6,5,4 strings and the 5,4,3 strings until watching your triad videos. I could not find that anywhere without getting confused. Your triad videos really eliminated my confusion by explaining the three ways of learning triads by shape, by position and by vertical movement. No one has explained it like that which is why I was so confused. Craig Ewinger

@craigewinger120 , you are very welcome! Yes, learning the triads in all sorts of combinations is essential in getting them down to the point where you can have all the possibilities available to you.
Keep me updated on how you get on with the triads :)
