I’ve been playing for 35 years, and this is the first theory lesson I’ve understood since Mel Bay Book 1.
Playing the G D Em C with a variety of Root, first inversion, and second inversion is a quite satisfying. And the idea of practicing within this as a limitation makes it an exercise in mindfulness.
I also discovered about 3 fragments of Phish songs hiding in there. I can see immediately that they’re all there somewhere.
    Thank you.

So happy to hear that. Thanks so much for sharing! Theory is all about intervals & chords or scales on one string approach! Please enjoy playing through chords! Those are basic training on ear training & theory knowledge. I V vi- IV so you can change keys!

Tomo, I'm a lifelong piano player, but only started guitar when I retired. Your lessons about learning guitar apply to just about every other thing. Limit the area you're learning and focus, have fun while learning, stop, drink a beer and be happy. And you're a comedy genius like Mr. Bean. Thank you, GT Sipe

I just had a HUGE 💡 moment thanks to Master Tomo.
    I'm at 7th Fret with a Triangle G. 787.
I'm thinking okay. G chord is GBD.
Well then hit me upside the head!!!!! 877 is B and 775 is D ❗️❗️❗️
All right there nice and close.
Thanks for leading me to this result.

Tomo, your lessons (here and in Guitar Wisdom) is the one of best things that has happened to me in my musical journey. I've been playing the instrument for 15 years, and I was always frustrated about simply picking up tabs and not knowing what's going on musically (for eg, oh they switch from the fourth chord to a fifth). Trusting the process and just consistently practicing (even if its just 15 minutes everyday) has helped tremendously! I can SEE MORE now! You've lessons have literally changed my life. Onwards and upwards!

    • @TomoFujitaMusic

So happy to hear that. This one is my style of teaching! Simple yet very important. You did a great job! No tabs so you need to be patient so you can go to next level and keep going! Without this... 5,10,15, 20 years or more... still same place! Cannot improve at all! Because TABS! Thank you so much! You made me so happy today!

this lesson really opened my eyes, I have also watched your other triad lessons but I could only take away one or two positions into my playing. With those new tools you gave me I understand the fretboard way better and I finally got what it´s all about with triads. I really like your way of explaining without confusing terminology.

As a self-taught, by-ear/by-eye player (on guitar, at least), I have a near-terrifying disconnect between the theory I do know, and any real, tangible fretboard roadmap. So, for me, stuff like this starts to bridge that gap, and is VERY, very helpful. Thank you.

I'm now adding bottom three strings triads exercises into my new daily practice routine.

This is exactly what I am wanting to learn on the guitar. I can play pretty much any chord on the piano, and I understand inversions very well. I know how to make a chord minor vs major. But the guitar, is like the freaking human genome! So, I am focusing on learning the fret board, and then I predict that I will FLY! Triads will be next. Can't wait. I completely agree that chord shapes are not as good as actually knowing the notes! Focusing on chord shapes is what brought me to my knees in the past. I would hit a road block because I couldn't play a certain shape and I didn't know where else on the fretboard that chord might live. Or how to add a 7th, or make it minor. SO EXCITED! I feel like i might finally learn to actually play the guitar!

I first encountered this lesson about inversions when I was 16 years old and was to repeat several times during my lifetime. Now, at 67, I finally understand it and it's significant because arthritis in my left hand fingers now prevent me from playing certain chords. I look forward to learning to play alternative fingerings for those chords. Thankful to Tomo for the lesson 👍😃

Nice lesson! I have been playing in bands for over 20 years in front of some pretty large crowds. But, not knowing all these triads means I have been trying to communicate with only a limited number of "words" to express myself. Like when learning mathematics, sometimes it is good to go back to basics and fill in the missing concepts.

We are lucky to be living in a time where there are so many resources to learn guitar, but the amount of information can also be overwhelming. This is the perfect example of a bite sized piece that is so important and fundamental, taught by a master player and teacher. I appreciate the patience and pace with which this is taught. I have learned something here. I need to practice it and build upon it, but I now have a foundation. I’ve been playing for a few years and I have a decent intermediate level of understanding regarding theory, but this really made sense and I now completely understand this very small part of playing guitar. Thank you for this Tomo. Your expertise is very much appreciated.

A few take home points for me were:
    1. Root position is root, major 3rd, 5th
    2. First inversion is major 3rd, 5th, root
    3. Second inversion is 5th, root, major 3rd.
I also understood for example, the root position for the Cmaj chord is essentially part of the third fret C barre chord. Or the 1st inversion is part of the F-shaped C chord I play on the 8th fret. Also, I have recently been learning to play Dosed by RHCP and after this lesson I have a whole new appreciation of the Em and Dmaj triads John Frusciante is playing on the record. Thanks so much, Tomo!

@@TomoFujitaMusic I am looking forward to such a lesson! I feel exactly the same like Wesley Du. Understanding theory is rather easy for me, not confusing at all. It's maths/logic, But when I learn this lesson, I can play triads in root position, 1st and 2nd inversion. When I play, is this really how to approach it? "Ok now I will play A triad second inversion. Next D triad root position etc." (key of A). What does sound valuable to me (pun intended) is to sing the notes you play. Being able to sing what you hear in your mind (assuming there is something you here) is the ultimate goal to me. But then it does not matter if the fifth is on top or 3rd, I play a *melody* (that happens to have theory behind, but it's not theory -> melody). Does that make sense? That's what is really confusing to me, not how you call theory elements. In any case I am really enjoying your lessons & I have the two Accelerate... DVDs at home. It is amazing how much you give to the community. Thanks!
