    I'm glad you've decided not to repaint that dude. When you first said you'd found him and were considering stripping/repainting, my immediate thought was of Duncan Rhodes - he's shown off the first ever Space Marine that he painted badly (very thick paint!) as a kid because he didn't know how to do it properly. He kept it on his desk at GW as a reminder of where he started and that he'd be talking to viewers who were in that place. Your Battletech Mech could be a similar sort of mascot for you.

      That was my first thought too. I have a warcaster from Warmachine that was the first model I painted and I keep it right next to my paints so I can see where I started from.

      Mine is a rubric marine.. A ballsy first attempt. I'm gonna put my last rubric next to it and see the difference once I've done the next box of them.

      my first model was 1 box of necrons......... spraypainted black base, drybrushed necron steel, and drybrushed ryza rust, highlighted their eyes blue with some faint drybrush to go give them a glowy effect.... i cant say im displeased with them after a while..i think i did ay ok

    That Atlas is from the Plastech set, which include 2 each of 8 types of mech, so you may find the Atlas's brother lying around somewhere, allowing you to have one painted as "then" and one painted as "now".

    Repainting models is a great way to retain the initial investments you made into the hobby when you were younger. Sure, I miss the vaguely remembered paint schemes of my youth, but i haven’t had to buy new models each time I want to paint. The plastic is worth more than my sentimentality

    I found one of my first minis about 2 years ago. It was a Reaper Heckylmeyer the skeletal jester. It had been painted before I was introduced to priming minis so most of the paint was chipping off. I decided to strip and repaint him. I tried allot of new techniques and really pushed past my comfort level when repainting him. He is now one of the first models I am truly proud of after more than 20 years of painting.
    I do how ever have a few of my earliest minis that I won’t strip because I like seeing how far I have progressed since the 90s.

      I didn't jump into that game when it was first released, so I don't have any old figures. I have, however, found some really good ebay deals with figures that I've overpainted. None were so gloopy that the details were obscured, so a light re-priming was all it took. Welcome back to the game!

    • @rangersoftheeast2560
      @rangersoftheeast2560 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnmcconnell9979 I've done similarly, but I like to use simple green to strip more of the paint off ahead of time, especially on metals where the paint doesn't adhere as well. Plastics are rather more difficult to do this with however

    "Quantity has a quality all its own" - Thomas A. Callaghan Jr.
    There's something to be said for reaching a level that you can paint a new army with a quickness and also have it look good.
    Directly to the point though this is something that was hard to learn originally and a lesson I remembered when I was able to get back into the hobby (life stuff) about a year and a half ago. The lesson is your first bunch of models are going to suck or at least not come out the way you pictured it in your mind when you started. I saved myself a good deal of grief when I got back into it after life forced me to put hobbies on the back burner for a few years. Instead of just jumping into a new army I spent about a hundred bucks on a few dozen miniatures for D&D from the Nolzur's Marvelous Unpainted Miniatures line that I wouldn't be using on a table at a game shop but that still looked cool enough to me to get into painting and I would use in D&D games at home with our group. Sure enough the first couple really kind of missed but around the twelfth model I started knowing that I really could start seeing improvement and that was encouraging enough to keep me going and even the worst was good enough to use at home and I got to practice without stressing over ruining my favorite new army. If you're not into D&D check out the cheap Bones miniatures from Reaper for practice.

    I don't go back and paint old models just for the hell of it, but I do if I'm pulling out old stuff that I'm either getting back into a game or re-purposing them for a new game and I'll be adding new stuff so I want a consistent army look. It's basically like finding a cheaper eBay in my closet. Though a recent incidence of this didn't go well. I was going to redo and expand my Khador army when Warmachine Mk3 came out, but after I got them stripped, all momentum towards playing the game died before I even started getting them painted.

  • @EasilyDistractedPlanner
    @EasilyDistractedPlanner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've stripped a couple of models. Once a set of 10 repeater crossbow units of my dark elves because they were poorly painted and I'd gotten my hands on better paint to use for them and I was going to paint another 10 models anyway, so I stripped them to make both units uniform in painting, and they look much better for it since the original paint scheme just hadn't worked out. And I've stripped my old Cauldron of Blood and repainted it because the colours originally just didn't work and I'd found a way to make them look much better. Both of these were because they were active parts of my army and the original colour schemes just weren't right for what I was going for.
    I'm actually going to strip Khaine from my new CoB because I (again) used a colour scheme that just doesn't work for it in combination with the rest of my army. To me, this makes sense, especially when it's for an active army.
    But I'd never strip my old metal witch elves, no matter what, I wouldn't. Or my old harpies. Because they're good the way they are. Yeah, I'm better these days, but new models can show that off, these I don't need to repaint to get there.

    Never go back! Just get more models (like most of us didn't already have those...) and paint them.

    So weird it was just last night at lime 3am I was wondering if to sell and re buy half my blood raven army because I've recently found a much better way of doing the red armour. I had a good look at a few of them and ya know what... They're great with the darker red colour scheme and they're painted to a good standard. Sure the army's tone is different but they're staying. This video is only re enforced that idea and saved me months of re building and painting.

    A few weeks ago I found the first models I ever painted. They were a couple of goblins from a snall minature company from a convention I did with my dad. I was probably 4 when they were done. After a couple of hours of research I found a website in Australia that had them and I bought the couple of characters and added them to the base of my general of my Gloomspite Gitz army. Now I have the originals and a new pair done over a decade later.

    I’m still pretty new to the mini painting hobby. But I will say there’s one mini of mine that I’ve stripped. It wasn’t the first mini I’d ever painted but it was the first 40k mini. It was pretty bad with thick paint and ugly mistakes. But as I was learning to paint I had someone teaching me how to do it. They were great at teaching me and because of their help the difference between the first and second models was night and day. I painted a few more and improved little by little with each model. But nothing was quite as big as the gap between the first and second. I eventually decided to strip the first because it just couldn’t compare with its squad mates. If he was going to serve with them then his uniform needed to meet their standards hehe

    I have been painting for almost a year now. My first ever miniatures I painted was a group of Liberators for Age of Sigmar. I look at them and they are not painted well at all. The wash I did was very light so virtually non-existent, I skipped over so many details because I lacked the confidence I could do them and I really just wanted to get them painted to play and my eagerness to play won out and is very evidence on those first few batches I worked on. I kept wanting to strip those liberators because they look like garbage on the table compared to my newer work.
    Instead, I thought I would add a new kit. Now I just finished painting them last night and I am basing them as I type here but I have 10 models here I am very proud of. I did something new with both sets of five. Now I can hold them up next to my first batch and show very clearly my progress. The game still comes first to me. I'm not in it to win painting competitions but I do want to have things I can be proud of. If I'm being honest, at good chunk of my games are against grey/black hoards so I think it is totally okay to have mediocre models in the mix.

    Hi!
    Great video. I have found myself stripping old miniatures a few times now. Firstly after a 10 year break from the hobby. As I had over 3000 pts of old marines I was reluctant to go out and replace what I already had. Plus a tactical squad made up of RTB01 always turns heads at the LFGS!
    I've recently mothballed this army as I needed a change (25 years plus with heroic Astartes) and moved to Genestealer cults where I found myself stripping down 30 imperial guard (a failed project) to become Brood Brothers.
    Keep up the great work!

    I still have the first model I painted. It reminds me how much I evolved as a painter. Besides I feel sentimental toward it.

    An exception to this would be if you're repairing the old model. My first miniatures ever painted were also Battletech, and I did not know about pinning etc when I built and painted them. That lance of mechs has broken about 1/3 of their total glue joints (guns, arms, even the bases have come off several) and are mostly a pile of metal at this point. I'm going to need to clean them up in order to reassemble them, and that means the paint is going to be damaged or removed anyway. They are not my top priority as I have other things to work on too, but fixing them is necessary to enjoy them.

    Battletech is still great. I'm currently waiting for the items from the "Clan Invasion" Kickstarter. They ended up with 11.277 backers and a total of 2.586.421 $ pledged. The Atlas and many other designs were resculpted and they look awesome now.

    I don't have unlimited hobby budget so I will absolutely strip and repaint old minis because I can paint better now or because I need them to look different. Also I don't play games that require me to buy models to play the current codex every few years so my painted forces serve me longer.

    This is good advice but i feel for classic old sculpts they deserve love and to be repainted if just for the sake of having them as a display peice, i found a old squad of metal space marines from the early 90s that i painted when i was in high school i'm stripping them and repainting them to have them as a display set.

    I only strip minis i have painted if i cant find them for sale anymore. Like the Vampire the Masquerade mini from Ral Partha i painted when i was like 10 with testers enamel, eventually i want to redo that one. But for most everything else I leave it as a marker for where I was to where i am now as a painter

    NO! dont strip it! That model must be preserved as is and placed in a place of reverence. For it marks you path to improvement if you erase your past you will not know how far you have come. But you know what you can do? Buy another of those guys and paint him up to stand next to his brother.

    Personally I would keep my best and worst painted miniature from the past and repaint the rest if it was an army based. That way I would have a kind of reference point of where I started in my painting.
    With the above said, I feel I should state that I have yet to even build a miniature. But I did get the 40k Dark Imperium starter box for Christmas... so this should change shortly.

    • @Dante502

      That's actually what I just did. I kept one of my OG marines from the Battle of Macragge set and stripped the rest of the army. I wanted to keep my presence on the tabletop as consistent as possible but knowing where I came from is still important to me.

      Man! That is a tough first mountain you have set yourself. Going to be steep. Potentially a will-breaker. Couldn’t you have started with a few single sprues bought from eBay; just to get some practice in? Best of luck.

    • @Winterydee
      @Winterydee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peterdickinson4599 - You haven't heard the craziest part yet. Beings as I'm starting this project at pretty close to a Zero Point (growing up I did build and paint a few model planes, ships, cars and even a Robotech Veritech Fighter. But that was back in the mid 1980's) I'm planning on making a different TH-cam channel from this one, my personal one, recording it the whole building of the box kit and putting it up for others to watch. I figure that it maybe could be a fun and informative video series for people interested in possibly getting into tabletop miniatures gaming and people who are already in to this hobby might just find it interesting also.
      I believe that I've already gathered most of my needed tools to do the project. Cutter, primers, paints, glues, items for a wet palette, knife, homemade handles, poster tack and sanding boards. I may still need some items for basing, because I agree with Atom that a base with nothing done to it just looks kind of wrong. I also plan on giving credit to the other channels, where I was exposed to certain ideas and techniques, by giving linking to the video/videos in the description and maybe in the video itself.
      I just need to get the camcorders, they are in transit currently. Finish my color scheme for my Space Marines, just need to finally how I want to signify ranks and veterancy in the scheme. I also need to write down layout of video topics for the two different armies.
      See I told you it was crazy at the start.

    • @peterdickinson4599
      @peterdickinson4599 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Winterydee Yes you did say it was crazy and you were not exaggerating. That is an outrageous challenge. Good luck. I'll keep an eye out. And you might want to add brushes to that list... :)

    • @Winterydee
      @Winterydee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peterdickinson4599 Oh I got two multi-brush packages of cheap brushes when I got the poster tack & rattle cans of primer. I may still pick one very nice brush for final details. But 20 brushes( 2 are fan brushes... so those are only going to be useful for terrain maybe) for less than $10.00, should get me through the 53 miniatures in the box and hopefully a few more.
      I'm also already talking to a friend who picked up an Adeptus Mechanicus Battle Box early last year, but was only able to put together a few of them together due to work, about finishing building them and painting them for him. I would also record and upload that too, if he has me do that for him. But I want him to at least see my SM army before he agrees to it so he can see what level of finished product he should be receiving from me.
      Another friend also bought the Battle Box Starter for Necron at same time, but has been able to do most of the building and I think painting. So I have not talked to him about doing those for him, but maybe.

    as a person who started painting about a year ago (I just assemble and paint I dont have anyone to play with kek) I can say that there is no point in stressing over painting and such, at first I was really just tryharding on easy-to-build spehs MAHRINES of course damned primaris but welp, and Im so happy I did, no I know that I hate painting models which are mostly 1 color, after marines I picked death guard and spend much less time on them and I still think they look much better. the comment may/probably will not be applicable to the video but I just wanted to give my input. and yea don't strip your past minis, my first mini looks like crap but I love it since it made me start in the hobby

    I had to strip ALL my old models as there was a slow leak behind the display cabinet because the workmen drilled too far puting a new shower unit in. This in turn slowly leaked into the cabinet causing hell with my models. 😢
