    I got the barebones full size just now and I think it's fine though I have a handful of issues out of the box:
    Scroll Lock does not register being turned off or on but passes keyboard test
    My version had a built-in cable instead of detachable
    Everything else was fine. I bought Silent Reds that were 5 pin and clipped the plastic bits off to fit them in here and they're working fine.

    Great review. I've used this keyboard over 1.5 months and I could not stand the 'pinging' noise you get whenever you press down on a key. I'm assuming it had to do with the hollow body. Otherwise, this is a pretty great keyboard for anyone who wants to get into the mechanical keyboard community.

      Thanks, and I totally agree! Since this review I lubed the Halo True switches as well as did some modifications to the stock stabilizers, and the sound of the board is much better IMO. I'll be putting a video together of the difference pretty soon.

    I will say, I have the GMMK as well as the Drop CTRL keyboards, and something about the drop TKL housing and casing makes it sound so much better than the GMMK. perhaps it's the full aluminum construction, vs. the GMMK only the top being aluminum and the bottom being plastic. The inconsistency kind of drives me mad a bit, makes me want to mod my GMMK, but I haven't done the stab mod yet, (about to) but I need the GMMK for my Full size. Do you have the inconsistency of sound as well with your GMMK? Like sound keys sound so satisfying to push, but some just meh. I am rocking Box Jades with SA caps, thinking about transferring that to the TKL... but full size... argh..

    • @PatrickRennie
      @PatrickRennie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, to be honest I don't really notice a huge difference in inconsistencies with mine. I can't really compare either, because I can't afford a Drop CTRL haha. I did just do a video where I modified the stabs as well as lubed the switches, and it's made a pretty significant difference overall!

  • @Caswagna93
    @Caswagna93 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Supposedly the black version of the barebones will be receiving updated stabilizers and USB C during Q4 2020. Does this board come with foam pre-installed between the base plate and the pcb? I did that mod on my logitech and it made a huge difference, as well as greasing the stabilizer

    • @PatrickRennie
      @PatrickRennie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to know that they're looking at making that improvement! I heard from another commenter that the new GMMK that they received also had USB-C connectivity. I think that shows a really positive step forward.
      I haven't opened up the case yet, but I would assume that there is no foam pre-installed, as I haven't seen any keyboards that do this. Same goes for the stabilizers in the board. I would agree with both of those mods though!

    Hey bro I was wondering if I was doing bare bones what would be better this or the new pro?

    • @PatrickRennie
      @PatrickRennie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Sami! The GMMK TKL and the GMMK Pro aren't really comparables in my view. GMMK Pro is almost twice the price, and all aluminium, gasket mounted (much more 'enthusiast'), whereas the GMMK TKL is a gaming keyboard that you can add different switches in if that makes sense. I see the GMMK TKL's competition being the Keychron K8 hot-swappable boards, and the GMMK Pro is more in line with the Idobao ID80.
      All things considered I find it harder and harder to recommend the GMMK TKL (3-pin only, plate mount stabilizers only) because 2020 was such a good year for entry-level custom keyboards. I'm hoping that if the Pro is successful for them that they might update their designs on the regular offerings. Hope that helps!

      The Barebones edition (this one) was $59.99 USD. Switches were $60USD, and the keycaps were around $20 I believe? This is definitely not a 'cheap' board I would say, and I certainly made it more expensive by buying separate switches myself.

      Agreed. 2020/2021 has also been a pretty excellent year for the custom scene, and I'm finding it harder and harder to recommend this one because of some of the limiting factors it has when compared to others (plate mount only stabilizers, 3-pin compatibility only, etc.). • @loak3d
    @loak3d 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    for the price they charge for these boards, it's a bit absurd they do not support 5 pin/pcb mounted switches. Plate mount IMO is garbage, and you'll find better options at the same price point out there. They just released their GMMK "Ice" edition and it too, still.. does not have pcb mount support. IDK what they are doing but glorious will no longer see any $$ or support from me until they actually improve their products. their QC is sorely lacking.

    • @PatrickRennie
      @PatrickRennie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there are a lot of options in the 3-pin area that make it viable for GMMK, not to mention the switches they sell from their site are all 3-pin. I understand that it's frustrating which is why I commented on it in the video.
      I still think this is one of the best boards to buy to get into 'experimenting' with switches as the price point for a barebones is a fraction of a custom board from KBDfans or a group buy, but it definitely isn't without criticism.
