"In 2007, I was approached by Keppel Corporation, with whom I have had a long association, to write a piece to commemorate their 40th Anniversary concert performed by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra the following year.
As Keppel had already been very generous to me by sponsoring the SSO’s CD of my Piano Concerto written for Toh Chee Hung, I suggested that they commission a younger composer instead. (At my suggestion, Ho Chee Kong was commissioned and produced a major orchestral work, Of Passion and Passages.)However, I still planned to write something for the Keppel concert, and based it on Keppel’s famous motto, “Can Do!” which characterises Keppel’s amazing spirit which has made it the world’s leading producer of jack-up offshore oil rigs. The opening of the “Can-Do!” Overture tries to capture this spirit with its rapidly repeated fanfare-like trumpet/flute chords below which the main “Can-Do!” theme emerges in the lower strings."
