      I was born in Cruces and am now living in Kansas( followed the love of my life there in 86') Saw the thumbnail image for this vid and thought to myself, THAT CAN'T be Mesilla Dam, can it?? I lost count of the summer days I would spend there fishing, and picnicking on Easter with Mom, Dad and the rest of our VERY EXTENDED family. Thanks for that snapshot of home Kris.

    Those big nets are hard to throw after a while... its a workout. We like the five foot nets. Easier on the arms and they tend not to tangle as much. I enjoy your channel a lot brings back memories when I was a kid.

    That looked like a red tail minnow. We used to just have them in the Brazos river but now they can be caught in Lake Sommerville as well. Really good catfish bait.

    Kris, I'm amazed at how well you cast a net! You're an expert! Did it take you long to learn? The flathead and channel cat fingerlings bode well for the river. I assume you'll be freezing the shad and carp to use as bait, is that correct? Very instructive and entertaining my friend! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    • @muddyrivercatfishing
      @muddyrivercatfishing  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Juanelo! It took a lot of practice to get the hang of throwing that net. I bought one, read the instructions and went from there. It is a real workout when you do it over and over. I'm still learning but I get the job done. My throw gets worse the more tired my arm gets Lol!

    I went fishing to a lake here in texas Lake Mckenzie.....around midnight I saw hundreds of a fish swimming back n forth splashing edges. I thought they were crappie the day before i bought my first ever cast net so I go and i cath about 12 of em the first throw and Ive seen pictures of the smaller shad never of the gizzard shad like the ones you caught I kept one and cut him up for catfish bait....I was still learning how to set up the bait on the circle hooks well about 30mins later I had a huge bite it was pulling drag I thought to myself I finally caught me a big catfish. Then it spit it out i reeled it in and judged from the looks of it that I had hooked the shad head wrong and that the fish was biting on the head but the hook didnt have a good set....now after watching your videos n Steve Douglas I feel im ready to try again.

      Edkon Entertainment cut it into sections perpendicular to the body. One cut behind the gills, then move down about an inch and cut it again. keep doing this until you reach the tail piece. This will give you nice chunks of bait.

    I'm a little confused kris, so you saying they shut the water off to this section of the river and it drys up completely? All those fish in that section of the river just die then?

    • @muddyrivercatfishing
      @muddyrivercatfishing  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Lalle That is correct. The water is shut off for roughly nine consecutive months so any fish below the dam are destined to die. However, the department of Game and Fish still enforces the law stating that it is illegal to transport any game fish from one body of water to another so the fish have to remain there.

      Mix Kosher salt with ice and water in an ice chest, then add the bait for transporting. Once you get home, remove the bat from the ice water and seal them in bags with a vacuum sealer. Add a little Kosher salt to help keep them preserved.

    What is the importance of presenting live shad? I understand cut bait is good also.but is there not times when a live presentation is preferable? One more question if you please. What is (in your estimation) is the life span of shad once in the 5 gallon bucket?

    • @muddyrivercatfishing
      @muddyrivercatfishing  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Francis Kitchens shad are probably the toughest fish to keep alive. I know there are fisherman out there who have it down to a science, but I don't even try anymore. I just freeze them and use them as cut bait. If I want live bait I'll use bluegill or carp because they are easier to keep alive. I'm still working on an answer for the live bait versus cut bait theory. I used to believe that the only way to catch flatheads was with live bait however, these past few years, I've been catching just as many on cut bait.

    Gosh that is a lot of bait. Where I live and fish 4 of those big Shad would last you all day. Like our limit on our California Split Tail are 2 per day per person. We catch 2, hook them live, throw them out and that is what you will need for your entire 4 hour fishing trip.

    • @muddyrivercatfishing
      @muddyrivercatfishing  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      martin torres If the stock pond you are fishing as fish in the 1 to 5lb range then try using a 1/0 hook with a Carolina rig or a Kentucky rig. You won't need too much weight. Maybe a 1/2 oz or 3/4 oz. Pond fish can be tricky sometimes but I hear a lot of people catching them on hot dogs, stink baits, dough baits, and good ol fashioned worms. I like braided line and 20lb test should me more than enough.

    I'm not to sure about this, but I think catching fish in a net like that is illegal in lakes. Can shad be caught on hooks? How big does that red tail fish get? Great video!

      I have seen shad caught on a hook before but I haven't had much luck with it myself. The red tail fish in the video is already at its adult size. Thanks for watching!

    have you ever seen a headwater catfish?

    Why would they frown upon that. I'm not saying stock your back yard pond with them. Just to deeper water on that same body of water. They shouldn't have a problem with tht as long as you're not relocating invasive species like asian carp. You should call your fish and game and ask if it's alright, or just let them know about it and they'll probably have someone go out there and get them. But either way love the vids man keep em coming

    That silver fish with red fins is called a roach I fish for them in Ireland

      I don't believe we have the same species of roach here in North America and there aren't any native to that river because it is too warm for them. I am not certain what species that fish is but if there was a roach surviving in a New Mexico river then we'd have to completely rewrite and restudy the range and necessities of the roach species

    Keep those small shad if u ever wanna take your kids out to catch big bass I can't use them legally in maryland but I see big smallies and largemouth devouring the small shad in the shallows
