  • Welcome to the fifth lecture in our Nyaya Sutras series! In this continuation of our previous discussion, we further explore the defense of Īśvara (God) as articulated in the Nyaya Sutras by Gautama. This session delves deeper into the sophisticated arguments and philosophical nuances that the Nyaya school employs to establish and defend the existence of Īśvara.
    In this lecture, we cover:
    • Deeper Analysis of Arguments: A closer look at the cosmological, teleological, and moral arguments for Īśvara's existence, with additional insights and interpretations.
    • Philosophical Counterpoints: Addressing more complex objections and providing detailed Nyaya responses to strengthen the case for Īśvara.
    • Attributes of Īśvara: Exploring the specific qualities and attributes of Īśvara as defined by the Nyaya Sutras.
    • Role of Īśvara in Nyaya Philosophy: Understanding the significance of Īśvara in the broader context of Nyaya epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics.
    Join us as we continue this profound exploration, gaining a richer and more comprehensive understanding of the logical foundations and philosophical depth of the Nyaya school's defense of a supreme being.

    Would Nyāya consider parents to be maker of the body of their offspring ? The material cause of that body might be zygote and stuff, but parents, the intelligent maker, do not know that material cause at least in most instances.
    What would Nyāya say here ?

      I think parents won't be considered the makers. Offsprings would not be considered intelligent design since the parents do not determine the constitution of the child's body.
      In case of a palace or a pot, the designer chooses the material ingredients (constitution) as well as the outcome of the arrangement.
      That is my understanding. What do you think?

      @EdwinBryantOfficial Thank you for your reply. It makes sense, for the zygote grows by itself, so parents are not making it. In that case, the question would be who is the maker of the body of the offspring, or does it belong to the category of things without maker ?

      The maker of the body would be īśvara. Just like the constituent subatomic particles are made by īśvara, the mountains and everything is designed by īśvara, so are our bodies that house the consciousness.

      @EdwinBryantOfficial Thanks again.
      Is it connected to chapter 3 verse 14 of Bhagavad Gitā - Annād Bhavanti Bhŭtāni ? As
      Brahman (īšvaram)>Karman>Yajňa>Parjanya>Anna

      @@me-ou8rf I don't think Nyāya would refer to the Gīta. Their argument would be that īśvara is the sufficient and efficient cause.
