book adaptations are always tricky because you're trying to cater to an audience who has a very specific view of characters are, how the plot goes, how things should be depicted, etc. that's why i would never do it 😂
I felt the exact same way! I completely understand that an adaptation can't be a one-to-one but it's like they kept the shape of the body but threw away all of the connective tissue, which would be okay if not for the fact that they didn't replace it with anything. Also.....so much hamfisted expository dialogue....so much...
I was so looking forward to the movie 😭 I'll wait for it on streaming I guess

you should read Our Crooked Hearts. I have heard others not care for how detached the main character is, but I love characters like Mina, and I really fell in love with Our Crooked Hearts and the main character in it. I think you may enjoy as well :)

I read this book last year only because you recommended it and I LOVED it! I was so excited when I heard about the movie but now I'm upset that it's getting such horrible reviews.
The sequel intrigues me, I feel like the watchers is almost a perfect one shot! I wasn’t particularly in love with the plot but I feel like all of the fun really came from that last page and the mystery unraveling which feels impossible to do with a sequel
I feel the same. A sequel seems like it would completely destroy the tension of the book's ending, which imo was the best part!

Such a good review 👏 👌 🙌! I haven't read the book or watched the movie, but I have seen several comparison reviews while avoiding the spoilers. Now I'm really looking forward to reading the book. It's all about the proper character development, and when the movie screws that up, it really pisses me off!! I'll probably still watch the movie, but at least I know to lower my expectations 😅!

I begann the book, in audio a couple of months ago, because of you. I did not like it, so i soft dnf-ed. But i am planning to read it soon. I' m shore i didn't liked it because the audio form. I will give a try again.

This book is my all time favourite horror book. I not only love it, I live for it! I am so not watching the movie for what they have done to the characters 😢
The movie wasn’t all that it could be, but I’m glad I saw it because I stan Dakota Fanning 😅🤩 I felt like it stuck to the basic plot/lore. The ending was sadly the most different, but I feel like a lot of the changes they made were to cater to an audience that may not have read the book. The book is a SHINING 5 star 🌟 though. Anyone who hasn’t read it should asap!!
Hated what they did to Madeline ! They took away all the tension you get from the book. Such a disappointment.
I gave the book 2 stars, it was so damn drab & the payoff wasn’t worth it keep going on. So I’d hope maybe the movie would be a better format.
I'm under the impression that it's actually better to watch the movie prior to reading the book - obviously just for those that haven't read prior to an adaptation being made. I have never been disappointing reading a book after watching a movie. It's either science or pure luck on my part 😂

I appreciate this review so much. I was hoping for so much more with this movie. literally when the movie ended I turned to my friend and said “no you don’t understand, Madeline was a raging bitch in the book”.
My bf didnt reade the book but he really enjoyed the movie. I did like that they went more into the lore of the watchers, but they really butchered madeline imo. Edit to add that I also hated how they portrayed Daniel. He just seemed diff in the book
The movie was better but both were bad
