Would you say a 30.06 is to powerful for deer? I have hunted deer with a 30.06 and a 30.30.
The 30.30 stayed in the deer, I was a bad shot with the first shot so it ran, but the bullet stayed in the deer. My 30.06 bullet went through the deer and ripped a giant hole in it, but dropped it drt.

Nice. 30-30 is a good choice. Even people in Alaska have dropped moose and brown bear with them. In fact, 30-30 is one of the most popular calibers in the Bush (not accessible by road) villages up there.
I'm having a bit of a dilemma about my next gun. I have my loadout just the way I want it (AR15, Winchester 1300 Defender, Glock 21) and am trying to decide what I want to get next. I'm torn between a bolt-action .270 or 30-06 and a lever-action 30-30.

Bought for more full-sized rifles over the years, all in 30-30, and just because the wood looks so damned nice in each one. And rich bluing as well. Safe queens for decades! This video will have me looking to pull them out and run a patch through them before they go back into the safe, lol!

@chris mclaughlin they are a great rifle. Where I hunt I need a bigger pill because of the buck thorns thickets . 30/30 will make it through most of the time but when I hunt I'd prefer a clean kill and a 458 can cut through the buck thorns and still track straight. But in 90% of conditions a 30/30 with 170 grain jacketed soft points will put meat in the freezer and will put the animal down very quickly.

30-30 is one of the most underrated rounds out there. What the bullet lacks in velocity, it more than makes up for in sectional density and makes huge wound channels. Plus, a lever-action rifle provides more firepower than people think. 7+1 rounds of 30 caliber projectiles moving in excess of 2000 FPS at near semi auto rate of fire is not a bad option for self defense if it ever comes to that. I'd also wager only the 30-06 has dropped more deer in North America.
    Great video, by the way.

What a beauty. The grain on the wood is so defined and purdy. And yes, Winchester 30-30 (model 94) hold 7 in the tube and Marlin's hold 6 in the tube. I had a Winchester 94 I bought back in 2004, but I sold it then felt stupid having sold it and bought a Marlin a few years back. Turns out it's a Remlin. If you wanna know the whole disappointing story about Remlins just google it. But hey, she still shoots just fine and I was hitting 100 yards with the irons just fine and threw a scope on it and zeroed that and it's my hunting rifle. In PA you dont really need anything more powerful unless you are hunting Elk. Most shots you'll take at a deer are 20 to 120 yards. 30-30 is more than enough to drop a deer, is light weight and easy to maneuver.

It was given to my grandpa by his grandpa who bought it when he was 13 or 14 and wanted to go deer hunting with the adults so they said he could go If he bought his own rifle. So he sold pickles, bought the rifle and treated it like his 1st born, later giving it to my grandpa who since gave it to my father and my father to me. It's in immaculate condition and still looks brand new. It's gotta be worth something but I don't think I could ever sell it unless I was made some kind of offer id be dumb to refuse. The 30-30 is extremely underrated way back when it first came out somewhere around 1895 there are stories of people taking out problem grizzlies. In the documentary Jungle Cavalcade Frank Buck used it as protection against tigers around the 1940 time frame. The 30-30 is very capable theres even a video on you tube about hunting a moose in AK with the Buffalo Bore 190 grain 1 shot and 8 steps and down it went. I think its underrated bacause in 1906 the 30 caliber 30-06 which is a lot more powerful came out and people jump to the conclusion the 30-30 is not powerful but its plenty.

I use my grandfather’s 94, and the serial number says that it was built in 1950. I’ve used it on at least two deer, and with the ballistics being right around the 7.62x39, it’s a great round for home defense.

"It's better to eat yer fruit before ya shoot it."
I love that quote, and I really love the old .30-30. Thanks for giving this round and these old guns some credit, and thanks for your fine videos! And I've been told by some folks even older than me, if that's possible, that they've killed elk with these lever guns chambered for .30-30. Ya gotta hunt close to do it, and shoot straight, but they'll do the job.

I bought my first levergun in 30-30 in the eighties. Then bought another in the nineties. Just bought another a few months ago. I'll take a levergun over an AR anytime. I also had another in .35 rem in the nineties. I want to get one in .357 soon.

Way back in 1956, my father bought a Winchester 30 30 new for $25.00 He got it from a guy that won it at a bar punch card game.
Dad already had his favorite hunting rifle, a Savage 99 in 300 Savage, so the Winchester saw very little action.
Dad quit hunting in early 80's and gave me his rifles. I gave his Savage to my eldest son and I still have the Winchester.
It is in great shape. I load Cowboy loads for it these days and use it for plinking at targets.

That is a very nice Model 94, I am jealous I have two 94's one from 1951 and one as new from 1940, also a 336 Marlin love that caliber people say its obsolete but the deer hung in the cooler every year after getting killed by one might disagree

There were two rifles and one shotgun my paw-paw had all his life. Winchester 94 30-30, Marlin 60 22Lr. and Remington Mohawk 12 guage. Those three guns put more meat in the freezer than you can imagine. Here in South West Louisiana that man was a hardcore hunter.

My dad has that exact same gun, and I have a Marlin. My first 4 or 5 deer kills were with a 30-30. One was on a doe that was walking, she did a front flip just about, and was dead when she hit the dirt ( granted, I do shoot hand loads, so they hit pretty hard )

Bought a Marlin 336 last Spring and I plan to use it this Fall/Winter. I used to see old used Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles at gun stores for $150 all day long. Gone are the days. Back when it was ok to say the pledge of allegiance and be thankful for the chance to say it.

I have a 1946 model 94 that was my grandfather's/father's. It continues to be the best deer rifle around for HUNTING deer (as opposed to baiting them and sitting on your butt in a blind and shooting from 300+ yards). ;)

Brother, you can not compare a 30/30 model 94 with anything else. No comparison at all. Yes I love my 30/30. A lot of guys laugh at me, but I've taken more deer with my 30/30 than my 30.06. Your model 94 is an absolute beautiful weapon!!!!

My fondest memories for my father, waking me up before the sun on opening day of watermelon season in the Midwest. The long drive to the family, watermelon hunting camp. Getting to our stand before the sun came up. My father was a 3030 in one hand, and a PBR in the other. Mai, with my 10 pump, Daisy, in one hand and a hams in the other, because I thought the bear was cool. Boy, those were the days.

I've got an old Savage 219 B single shot in 30-30 and I had a Marlin 336 in 30-30. The only Model 94 I ever used was my Grandfather's in 32 Winchester special. I shot 4 deer with it after he passed away, to my knowledge I'm the only one that ever hunted with that old gun.
