A Real 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor Review vs an FX4. Review by owner

  • This is an all new 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor review and compared to the Ford Ranger FX4 package. Is it worth the money?
The Ford Ranger Tremor is an excellent overlanding choice in my opinion. The midsize truck market is very competitive these days with Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, Nissan Frontier etc. But whether hunting, trail riding, or more hard core offroading, the Ranger Tremor is a good choice.
To me, the most noticeable and surprising difference from the FX4 package is the ride quality in day to day driving. Watch the review and see my guess as to why. Thanks for watching and supporting.

Nice production. Thanks for focusing on the packages differences- exactly what I wanted. Great walk around and camera work. I live in Maine and recently bought a 2020 Ranger FX4 package which should be perfect for getting to our many ski areas and icy parking lots this winter.

Great review! I think these American manufacturers have gotten smart and offered these packages (tremor, trail boss, at4, etc) that most enthusiasts do after buying, mainly leveling lift and plus sized tires. I have a 2015 f150 fx4 and plan on doing similar tire suspension mods etc. Great that now you can buy from the factory! Awesome review and truck, if I was in the market I would look strongly at the ranger tremor!

This video was spot on for me. We have a camper about the same size and do a fair amount of off-roading. I have had 4x4 F150s for years, but here in NC and GA, many of the trails are tight and I really want a smaller truck that can still tow our 3500# camper. I'm going tomorrow to look at two different Tremors that are both 2021s. Hoping for a year-end deal.

Liked your presentation. I have been a long time Toyota guy. My most recent a 2017 TRD Offroad 4x4 w/6 spd manual. I also restored my 2000 extended cab 4x4 with lockers and a crawler box. I am a hunter as well spending time Varmint, antelope, deer and elk hunting. A compact 4x4 pickup is an essential tool to getting in the backcountry. Not that you need four wheel drive in most situations. However, where I hunt it’s poorly maintained roads, rocky, eroded, steep, washed out, muddy, frozen, iced up or thick deep snow! Four wheel drive is a must! Trucks give you the clearance, a place to keep your gear dry and a place to sleep. Now I have owned numerous Toyotas that have been superior. Each has been modified for my needs. BUT I am not satisfied with my 2017 Tacoma. The electrically controlled 4x4 system doesn’t always engage. It takes being level and rocking the truck back and forth to get it to engage in 4 low. The E-Locker only engages below 5mph if your lucky. It disengages above 5 mph. The All Trac is a nice feature but disengages in 4 low. Plain Crap! Piss Poor gas mileage. Greatly appreciate your sharing your experience. I have been drawn for a buck deer & antlerless elk hunt this October in Utah. I plan on driving a new Tremor soon. Good Luck on your Hunts. Thank You

I saw a post where a guy unbolted the steps, and then covered the holes in the straight rail (is it a rock slider?) with anti slip adhesive material. It looked great. You could leave the one in the back for your daughter but I guess most people would worry about it being even front to back. My own concern was that for an offroad truck, those look like they would definitely get in the way and cause clearance issues. A lot of times you are trying to barely get around a big boulder or tree or fence post, and you can put your tire right next to it. But then you have those steps sticking out like a sore thumb. Not a big fan of it. Glad they unbolt. I understand the entire rail does as well, but I think the rail can protect the bottom of the cab somewhat even if it is not a true rock slider (which Im not sure about, mostly the difference is in WHERE it is mounted to (Frame or Facia material) , and sometimes how (big bolts, little bolts, welded). Outstanding review, thumbs up and subscribed. Anyhow I have a 2020 Ram Rebel that my son just totaled, fortunately he's okay but I'm looking at replacing the Rebel and downsizing with a midsize truck such as the Ranger Tremor or a GMC Canyon AT4. I'm very impressed with the Canyon but I also love the Tremor as well. Both trucks are very impressive so its probably going to come down to a coin toss on which one to purchase. Any words of wisdom for or against the Ranger or Canyon?

Too bad the Tremor isn’t available on the Super Cab body. I have a 2020 Ranger FX4 XLT. Bought the super cab because bed length was more important to me than back seat. Love the truck though! So glad Ford finally brought back the Ranger. The only advantage I could see to upgrading to the Tremor would be the auxiliary switches but I was still able to connect my cb radio into my truck. And the discount I got last year during Covid was too good to pass up.

One of the things I like about the Ford Offroad trims is that they try to preserve the TRUCK aspect of the vehicle while adding some offroad prowess. Other brands may have a cushier ride offroad and might do better in some situations, but they traded thousands of pounds of payload and towing capacity while doing it. For a midsized Truck 7500 lbs tow capacity is respectable and not compromised by offroad capability. But this means your truck will have very stiff leaf springs. If you are offroading you should carry some weight in the bed to get those springs bent a bit and take advantage of that two way articulation. Also air down the tires a bit from max pressure. This is designed for fuel economy ratings but you will have better traction and ride with a few pounds less. And for offroad, a lot more airing down will help as well. If towing is NOT important to you, you might look at something like the Chevy Colorado Zr2 which has a much better ride and a front locker to go with the rear one. It also looks better in my opinion. But, you will trade away 2500 lbs. of tow capacity for that sweet offroad ride at 6000 lbs.

Does your Sirius travel link work? I have a 2021 lariat Fx4 and nothing on there will ever load. It’s loaded maybe once since I had the truck and only lasted for a few minutes. I called Sirius and we reset it but none of that works. I really just want to be able to pull up the weather radar. Unfortunately Apple CarPlay won’t allow any apps like that for some reason. Which is crazy to me that there’s no weather app on there.

Looks like a great truck! Question: does the shell seal up to the back of the cab of the truck or is there a space? We carry our dog around everywhere with us and if I get a truck, I would want a shell too, but I would want to open the small back window so that the air con chilled air could go to the back area in the wheel and keep our dog cool. How do you keep your dog cool back in the shell?

There are all kinds of options when you buy a shell. One of my side windows opens laterally with the shell so you can open it when you drive. The other window has the two hand held knobs that you twist and open. That side you can’t drive while they are open.

I have the same truck...exactly....I have a suggestion.....get another trailer hitch setup ....not ball but a red U hitch or in my case, I have a red hitch insert piece.... but anything with a touch of red ....it will really set off the truck and complement the red nose inserts in the front! Easily found on Amazon. Also, get a tailgate damper....cheap and easy to install. Another really good add-on is a set of door entry guards (keeps from scratching up the step area as you get in and out). you can get Ford Ranger black chrome guards or you can get various universal guards. You may also want to look at a Ford or similar toolbox that fits over the bed tire hump. It swings out and is very handy. It's about 2.5 feet by 10 inches or so so. Ford makes one that is about 100.00 dollars more than one identical without the Ford oval decal. The generic one is available on Amazon or aftermarket truck sites, but with your bed setup, you may not want to consider that. Next, add on outside rubber door guards and mount them low on each door...they look great mounted low and are more efficient placed there as well. When you install those make sure and use emblem adhesive so they will stay....the stick-on adhesive they come with doesn't last. (run by your buddies at the body shop.. they got that particular adhesive so no need to buy a tube just for that.) There is also a plastic tray available for the console...very handy to put stuff where you can get to it.
One last thing.....on Amazon, you can find covers for the radio knobs that have a red accent strip..they simply stick over the current plain knobs..they are cool as heck and t want to consider t to that interior. I have also bought..but not yet installed .....covers or overlays to all the interior door latch covers, dash panel, and console....mine are carbon fiber style but you can get red...carbon fiber looks best in my opinion. Those overlay/covers are available at most online aftermarket truck parts sites and are a bit pricey. I haven't decided to install them yet. Anyway, enjoy that truck...it is fun to drive! BTW.. those aftermarket letters on the tailgate look great and I have done that as well.

But wouldn’t an FX4 and after market suspension with fox shocks be just as good and cheaper? Tires can be changed at any time so I never understand why that’s a selling point. I always see value in the FX4 package but the after market can give you the tremor for less.

    • @FlexmarkOutdoors

Possibly Darren. I’m never a guy that really wants to get too deep into aftermarket modifications. Just not my thing outside of upsizing in a tire. I didn’t price it out like that. It’s also a lot more hassle. And then U still don’t get the rocker switches either. To each his own though. I think it’s a great way to go if your are into tinkering etc.

11:48 Four tie-downs? In previous years, there are 6. It even looks like you have the holes for two more. You may want to ask the dealer for those too. I've heard other owners say something similar.
In the 2019 brochure, they actually say "6 in-bed tie-downs", but in later years they dropped the count from the brochures. I suppose when Ford gets low in stock, they just leave some (or maybe all) of them off during manufacture.

Not supposed to. This is not a vehicle where it's optional (see manual and gas tank wording). That tiny engine needs all the combustion power it can get or it will fail long before you get your money's worth out of that rig.

The fit and finish sucked. It reminded me of the poor plastic interiors of my early 2000 Fords. Sad.

We did consult the manual and you are wrong. This our 2nd Ranger since 2019. The manual clearly says use a minimum octane rating of 87. For peak performance it says use premium (91). Almost any car manual will say something similar. They even put in a nice big picture of “87 Octane” fuel in the manual. Not “91” as u said. We’ve loved both Rangers. If you do the Ford factory tune, then I believe they say you should be running 91 octane fuel.
