Thank you. Bonsai is such a strange thing. On paper it makes no sense, but It is an amazing hobby to be involved in, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing these hinoki develop over the coming years. Hopefully into interesting bonsai.

I like the way your thinking with the Hinoki cypress you can now see the trunks on them which is the right thing to do for initial styling and health of the trees, Hinoki can be a difficult shrub to turn into a credible bonsai but when they are they look great, now they just need patience. Great video Tony.
We're looking to move out of Colorado. It's so crowded now and full of crime to boot. We're looking in Missouri. I'm excited because Bald Cypress grows in the wet lands there so I'm eager to find that perfect specimen..I think it's time for me to buy some official Bonsai tools and retire my electricians tools! Cheers Guy. In my mind there are no finer trees in terms of amazing almost surreal taper than the bald cypress. I would love to own one myself, and I'm sure you'll be able to find a beauty! I hope you find a nice place.

Yeah That piece of petrified tree looks quite amazing, but the main thing is that she seems like a great person. Do you have any Hinoki's on the go? There is something about them that I really like. I'll not be freezing this winter. I had my log burner blazing last night!

I like all your decisions on those Hinokis Tony. I really like that species and have tried several in the past. (Killed them all) I’ve discovered they’re very sensitive about having their roots fussed with. They all didn’t make it after repotting. I recently bought another one and did exactly what you’ve done today. Next spring I’ll try a more gentle repot. Thanks, keep growing
My only experience of Hinoki is turning a very small one into a bonsai. But all the inner foliage browned and eventually it died. Shame since it makes for really lovely little tree. With these and particularly Chinese juniper the tight foliage gives the impression of dense leaves when seen on a deciduous tree from distance, which is what creates the illusion of a large tree in miniature. Perhaps I would have had more success with something a little bigger to ensure I can trim and provide light into the foliage. Though having said that my preference is always for smaller rather than larger trees - I just find them much more enchanting and magical. Keep up the great work. 🙏
Yes, It's interesting how some of us are drawn to the smaller bonsai whereas others love the bigger trees. I'm greedy, so I like both although It's definitely the bigger trees that really appeal most. You should get yourself another and make a nice little shohin.

Cheers mate, yeah I love working on these hinoki's they are really flexible and seem to grow well. I blanked on the prizes, but you win some you lose some. The main thing for me was to give candice a shout out. The prizes were only secondary, although that petrified wood did look amazing.
Another to add to the list but running out of space fast. I think I would have reduced the height of the first one but agreed with all your other decisions, will have to watch the lonicera video again as got one to style soon. Keep growing xx
Yes, I think that option with the first one is definitely on the cards in the future! I think when I return to my lonicera's, I'll be chopping them back really hard to attempt to get rid of the straigtness.

I bear rotted a hinoki last weekend in the search of the true nebari under all that soil. I found it. But did a full repot this time off year... Lets see if it lives 🤣
Yes, we seem to have the same tastes in bonsai. It would be good to hear about how the tree you repotted at this time of year does. Apparently, they don't like having their roots messed with too much, so I've got my fingers crossed for you!

May I suggest the gemstone dorf Hanoki Cyprus.. they have them in large quantities in the 2 pint size pot.. but let me tell you they may be smaller because they are a dorf Hanoki.... But the trunk to hight Ratio is almost one inch thick per 6 inches high.. so my 5 inch example is a little less than a half inch thick!!!!!!!!! Do you understand what I'm saying? For a 20 dollar little thing with almost a 6 to 1 hight to trunk ratio its next to impossible to make an horrible bonsai.. I bought three and are looking for more to add to my collection.. I would post a link but half the fun is finding one lol..

Hi Raymond. I pruned the more compact of these the other day. Nothing special, just allowing in some light and thinning the foliage, but it looks a lot better. I'll do an update in a video this week

I love these bushy dwarf obtusas, one of my favorite varieties if you have some familiarity with evergreens :) That first tree is a pisifera cypress I believe. Seems to be good material for tanuki and it looks fast growing. Great content 😁

Thanks for that tip. I've yet to mess with the roots on any of mine, so I'll definitely bear that in mind when I decide to have a look.
