1998, when I was 58 years old, a friend and I flew to Portland, Maine bungeed our camping gear on our bicycles and rode back to Anacortes, Washington. Took us three months, 3600 miles. Rode Highway 2. The way the towns are spaced in Montana, it seems like they were about 30 miles apart, you either went 30 miles and cut your day short, or had to commit to 60 or 90. We didn’t want to camp out in the open prairie so we usually stayed in motels in Montana. It was 108° when we rode into Havre, Montana at noon.Seems like we stayed in Shelby and then Cut Bank. From Cut Bank we rode through Browning and spent that night in St. Mary because our bicycle maps routed us through Glacier Park.I just subscribed so I can travel vicariously through you.
At 3:56 you shot ahead 1/2 mile. Had you kept the video onin about ten seconds my property was on the right. That 'pretty big mountain" called Eagle mtn. Surprised you didn't see mtn sheep when you were running the drone. The River seldom freezes fully. Too swift.
When I was a kid I grew up on a ranch not far from the Buffalo jump . We used to always go there and shoot rattlesnakes , gofers in the summer. Hopefully in the next couple years I’m gona move back.
Hi, Nancy! 😃 I went to school with several of your children in Craig many, MANY, years ago and I remember having spaghetti at your house once, too! My maiden name was Menish-Geryk. This video brings back A LOT of memories!! 💛 I hope you all are doing well! 😃
@@rachelledavid5975 Hi! How are you and how are your parents? Where do you live these days? We moved to Whitehall. MT where we have lived for 17 years. Chelsey lives here too. The other kids live in the state. We remember those fun days too, and I think that was somebody's birthday party when you were at our house. We are glad you have found memories of it and of Craig. We do too.
I live in Washington state near Seattle, I drove truck for 30 years delivery of groceries to stores in Montana and love the state it is vast. I loved the winter driving was dangerous but exciting too. Covered the whole state on my job. Retired now and would love to drive the state in my car.
Thank you for posting this! My grandparents and then my parents owned one of the homes on the left at 1:56 from some time in the 70s (I believe) until my parents sold in 2007. I have the best memories of living out there on the river! And yes, the drives in the middle of winter could get brutal!! Then there was summer...we were either dealing with the fires or flooding. My little sister and I would call that mountain with the "steps" across the river "our" mountain and it was such a relief to see after driving home from either Helena or Great Falls. We knew we were home! 💛🥰 I have so many stories about black bears getting into our trash, mountain lions resting under our neighbor's tree (the "Good Luck Camp" side)...I could go on and on! I went to elementry school in Craig, waaaaayyyyyy back before the schoolhouse was the firehouse! :) This brings back so many memories for me! Again, thank you for recording and sharing this!!! :)
Great Falls, "the Electric City" because of the the Missouri River waterfalls & it's 5 hydroelectric dams - Black Eagle, Rainbow, Cochrane, Ryan, & Morony dams; Giant Springs, it's large fresh water spring; and home and resting place of famous western cowboy artist CM Russell
You need to go to Fort Benton is the birthplace of Montana and stop on 87 here "Missouri River Overlook" and put your drone up there and get some beautiful footage there. The Missouri river twist and turns there its the best viewing ever.
I lived in Cut Bank Montana in 1970- 72 I can remember alot about that area and mostly the people and lifestyle and it is definitely COLD in the winter...Thanks For the memories
We stayed at that campground in Cut Bank about 8 days ago. Not a particularly aesthetically pleasing campground but the new owners were hard at work making improvements. We escaped the midday heat hanging out in the park by the creek just below the campground. If by chance you side trip up 89 to St Mary’s there is some major construction work going on with delays.
Yeah, that's the bridge where Elliot Ness, the Untouchabes, and the Mounted Police intercept a bootleg whiskey shipment in the 1987 film. As for Shelby, one of its claims to fame is that it hosted a Jack Dempsey prize fight back in 1924. That drive up US-2 into West Glacier is breathtaking , though the last time I did it was during a blizzard so far less fun lol. If you do stop in Kalispell be sure to walk around the historic downtown.
Love this MT tour you've taken us thru. We always drove Hwy 2 from ND-MN border, across ND, across MT, heading to Glacier with our kids. It's like seeing 2 different states named MT. & following I-15 reminds me of how Rt 66 follows I-40 across OK, TX, NM, AZ, & on into CA
Thank you, Russ, for the only summer vacation I'm getting. It's too bad you couldn't continue north into Canada to Calgary. I'd buy you lunch, coffee, beer ... whatever.
Recreation Road.....what an epic route? After watching yesterday's episode, I watched the same one that you did 5 years ago! How video quality has advanced!! Keep safe Russ
Fort Benton is where all the Trappers back the day went to sell and trade their skins. That's where boats would take them down the river to all the states a big trading post.
Been over the old highway many times and always enjoyed the drive in any weather I use to work on a ranch in Cascade which is the first small town after you leave Wolf Creek canyon and the hunting and worm drowning is very good
..Howdy & Hola Russ, Another Great Day of Traveling!!..So Wish I could Still Travel, as I once Did in my Younger days. ENJOY & Thanks for The Continued Awe Inspiring Sites that AMERICA Has to Offer us All. Those Beautiful Little Cities & Towns with awesome Architecture that have with stood Time & Weather, were Built to Last. Take Care, Stay Safe, Adios ~Laurie Ann in S. TeXas
HAVE DRIVEN THAT ROAD MANY TIMES AND THERE ARE MANY MANY MORE AREAS OF MONTANA THAT ARE BEAUTIFUL. NOW I LIVE IN HOBBS NEW MEXICO...I MISS IT , OH HEY I HAVE CAMPED BY THE RIVER IN THAT AREA AND YOU BARLEY HEAR THE TRAFFIC
Hey Russ, how lucky you are to be in that part of the country. Don't know what your plans are for heading west but as a suggestion, if you go through Spokane WA and continue west, you can pick up highway 2 again just after Spokane. Pretty country, and you can go on through the Cascades. Interesting town called Leavenworth, and a true small town USA called Skykomish. Lots of snow in winter but beautiful right now. I'm sure you will enjoy the mountains.
Thanks for the great videos of Montana. Hubby and I will be traveling in our rv in a few weeks from our home near Seattle. We are definitely heading that way after watching your videos. Beautiful!! 🙋♀️🌸
That little house on that island 5:24 Little slice of heaven right there!
love everything
Hardy Bridge was featured in the Kevin Costner film, The Untouchables

Hardy creek bridge was where the Untouchables was filmed. Kevin Costner, Sean Connery.
north of Ulm on I-15 south of Great Falls there is an awesome buffalo jump.state park, not far off I-15. Really something..
When I was a kid I grew up on a ranch not far from the Buffalo jump . We used to always go there and shoot rattlesnakes , gofers in the summer. Hopefully in the next couple years I’m gona move back.
The bridge at 11:00 min. Was in the movie the untouchables. Canadian us border scene
Beginning film, my Dads, Baumer Barnes, ranch was on the left side. That is where I was raised and rode that area by horseback many times.

haha epic! this made the video so much more enjoyable :)
That aerial view of bridge, river, and railroad .. beautiful...
This is why Charlie Pride liked Montana. So beautiful! I lived in Great Falls.
Spring is the very best time to go through there. I drive through there 2 times a month.
@ 7:23 that's the Gary Cooper Bridge you're approaching. Gary Cooper was born and raised in Montana.
Awe how sweet to wish everyone a Happy Mother's Day.
Yes Happy Mothers Day To All Moms
16:21, That is Great Falls International Airport off to your left. Malmstrom Air Force Base is on the east end of town several miles from there.
24:41 A friend of ours lives one over to your right, on 5th street.
I know the fishing has to be great there! I love how we do miles with you, the camera switches for a split second and boom, we are there.
You need to go to Fort Benton is the birthplace of Montana and stop on 87 here "Missouri River Overlook" and put your drone up there and get some beautiful footage there. The Missouri river twist and turns there its the best viewing ever.

Excellent, Excellent...... I wish I was driving that road for sure..... AAA+ all the way....
This ride is so beautiful. I don’t have a favorite season to take it; maybe spring.
They did make a movie at Hardy Bridge - that's the bridge at the climax gunfight of the Untouchables.
We stayed at that campground in Cut Bank about 8 days ago. Not a particularly aesthetically pleasing campground but the new owners were hard at work making improvements. We escaped the midday heat hanging out in the park by the creek
just below the campground. If by chance you side trip up 89 to St Mary’s there is some major construction work going on with delays.
Just before you got back on the highway there was a turn to the right. It’s a historical marker, where Lewis and Clark were.
I drive this all the time, my favorite drive
What a beautiful ride. Thank you for taking us with you! Stay safe!
That is the International airport not Mallstrom Air Force. base. Malistrom is on the east side of Great Falls
Oh shoot! You skipped from the Vaugh exit to the Shelby exit! Ya missed Conrad, where I live!
Yeah, that's the bridge where Elliot Ness, the Untouchabes, and the Mounted Police intercept a bootleg whiskey shipment in the 1987 film. Yep.... fire smoke sure can take the crystal out of clear. Thanks for going that far north, as it worked! Beautiful country. Stay Well😊
Next trip, go through fort Benton. It’s a very unique drive.
This is the best of best. Really enjoyed the scenic and beautiful landscape. Wanna go and drive there 😊😊😊
Glad you enjoyed it
@rvertv already watched several times. Thank YOU again from Seoul. 😀
Thank you for sharing 😊
My husband and I try to avoid interstate systems, not always possible.
I just found you on youtube. I LOVE all of the tours you take us on. Some, many of us would have never seen otherwise! THANK YOU!
Good thing four Cut Bank tire, or I would’ve mistaken that town for a half a dozen other towns in Montana and Wyoming.
11:23 I stopped at the same spot at the Hardy bridge last year, unloaded my gyrocopter & took off from the road.
I’m sitting 9 miles east of Browning and enjoying the view thanks for the ride it’s awesome
So beautiful!❤
Beautifull cups design! 😊
Been in Montana five years now and that ride is still one of my favorites. Just not in winter LOL.
I've done plenty of fishing right there in Craig on the river.
Love this MT tour you've taken us thru. We always drove Hwy 2 from ND-MN border, across ND, across MT, heading to Glacier with our kids. It's like seeing 2 different states named MT.

Thank you, Russ, for the only summer vacation I'm getting. It's too bad you couldn't continue north into Canada to Calgary. I'd buy you lunch, coffee, beer ... whatever.
Reminds me of driving the north side(Washington side) of the Colombia gorge west of The Dalles Oregon.
Gold nugget?! I'm leaving for Hardy Bridge right now! Save me a spot at that picnic table, Russ.
Recreation Road.....what an epic route? After watching yesterday's episode, I watched the same one that you did 5 years ago! How video quality has advanced!! Keep safe Russ
I remember all your old videos. Been keeping up since the first video I remember on polishing a boat. Good ole Scooby :-) Take us to Glacier :-D.
Went through there in 2022 on the 15. Now I want to go back and do the river road.
Just the calmness is worth the drive. Lot of hard work probably went in to make such a beautiful drive
Thanks Russ, I'm so glad to know about Recreation Road. I'm pretty sure my mom went that way in her RV travels along the Missouri River. Lovely!
That was a beautiful ride! Kudos's to you for capturing it. Thanks so much for sharing! Safe travels and keep em' coming.
Fort Benton is where all the Trappers back the day went to sell and trade their skins. That's where boats would take them down the river to all the states a big trading post.
Sure hope retirement communities get your channel. Just fantastic scenery. Right there and up close!
Regularly in the winter , the coldest place in the U.S. is Cut Bank , Montana !
Been over the old highway many times and always enjoyed the drive in any weather I use to work on a ranch in Cascade which is the first small town after you leave Wolf Creek canyon and the hunting and worm drowning is very good
Howdy Russ! Safe travels to you sir👍

That area is stunning. Saved it to my visit list. Can’t wait. Sometimes misfortune (smoke) can lead you to wondrous things. 😊❤️
We took US 12 out of Missoula and went across Lolo Pass, you stand at the head waters of the Missouri.
Another beautiful ride! Thanks Russ 🚐
Great ride today. Enjoyed it ! Be Safe!
Beautiful!
The bridge you crossed was used in the movie THE UNTOUCHABLS
