OMG, that beginning exchange tickled me a lot. Wil: "I've been drinking water all day, and Jon's drinking water right now, Felicia is mostly water, and as it turns out, Alan is, uh, loaded up with coffee." Alan: "THAT'S RIGHT!!"
Say that today. I know you mean nothing by it. No say it again.see what u did? civil unrest at the barrell of a gun. So anti American. No one now knows what it means to be one. I know. I was born one. I will die one.
I just love how the actors all craft these character stories for themselves. And Will has his eye on the prize: notice how he only joins in on the improv when he's reasonably sure they can win ;)
Youngwook Lutesse-Kang Yeah he was great in that movie as well! I remember watching the BTS after watching the movie for the first time, and I almost lost i when I saw him walking in those weird grey/green pajamas's!
Cue Matt Leacock designing a game called "Suck It, Wil Wheaton" and the game is just everything that Wil hates and it's designed to just beat him down.
+Arturo Reyes It relies entirely on dice, and rolling one, two, or three gives wounds, which lead to death. Wheaton will come to loathe the curse he makes light of so often. But the game's theme is everything Wil loves. He's addicted to playing it, yet always loses.
You are forgetting a key component. It has to take place in Waterdeep, with the rules saying that "One person (Preferably Felicia Day) controlling 3 characters, who scores points based on trolling the opponents
I have mixed feelings. The people involved were fun but the major rules mistakes are frustrating. I was going to share the video with my nephew who just got the game but the rules mistakes would just confuse him.
Episodes like this make me appreciate the extra dimension having actors play tabletop games brings. They create characters naturally and interact so well even when the particular game doesn't call for that specifically, it definitely adds to the enjoyment watching overall.
Wil: "We were flying over the forbidden desert to get to the forbidden island"... Alan: "Why can't we just stay where we were bidden?" Funniest moment on tabletop so far... that's why I watch the show, not for rules.
We actually play 'backwards' of what they're saying. We got off the Island and crashed in the Desert. Then.... we took the airship to the Sky (since Forbidden Sky has been released since this).
Alan Tudyk, Wil Wheaton, and Felicia Day, together, and nerding out over a game? I literally do not have to watch this to know that I love it and should give it a thumbs up! But...I will watch it anyway...because, you know, fun.
And it's not even past the intro and there have been several Firefly references...including one that made me sad, too, Wil...why would you do that? :( WAAAASSSSHHHHH!
IceMetalPunk I believe the correct spelling is McLichortitte... a fusion of Pict and Saxon origins but that can't be the first time someone has made that assumption... =D
May I make a recommandation? LoadingReadyLive is the archive channel for the twitch stream of the LoadingReadyRun internet video team. They're the people who do Desert Bus for Hope among a billion other things. One of their shows is "AFK" where they play tabletop games (the channel should have a playlist). It is really funny though I guess it doesn't have the production value or star quality of TableTop.
13:58 Alan is fricking amazing, because he always seems like his mind is wandering, and I find that goddamn hilarious!!! The way his eyes move around the behind-camera part of the set is completely unlike anyone else on this show!
My god that would be like some f*kng porn to me. Absolutely the best thing that could ever happened :D Will, if you have oportunity to do that, you just have to.
I love how invested Wil gets into the games and with Felicia Day it's just even better! Totally need more episodes with her in them. So far those have been my favorite episodes!
This was amazing to watch.I love how Will was so commited to his role as captain... you could actually feel all the emotions everything he was going through just to keep his crew safe. The whole backstory they made up was hillarious
This is a great game that I picked up right after watching this episode to play with my girlie and her son, definitely not an easy game but we have beaten it twice and had a blast playing, even when we lost. After watching almost ever episode, I now have several pages of games (especially Catan junior) that I need to hunt down and play with the family. Thank you guys for making a great show that introduces the world to some outstanding games and don't worry about the haters all about only pointing out the mistakes you make during the games you play. We are only human and every one of us that have ever played games have made a mistake here, wrong move there, or forgot to do this at this time. It happens! Just can't lose sight of the purpose of the game......having a great time with great people in your life. Keep up the great work and keep playing awesome games, mistakes and all.
And Allistair Krei from Big Hero 6. And King Candy from Wreck it Ralph. And the Duke of Weaseltown from Frozen. Wait, and Alpha from Dollhouse. . . I'm sensing a theme here. Alan Tudyk is obviously also Red Herring from A Pup Named Scooby Doo.
Definitely one of the best Tabletop episodes! Always love Felicia Day, and the other guests were awesome and entertaining as well! Firefly references were on point.
And I only had to wait until 03:40 for the appropriate Firefly reference in this episode: "Leaf on the wind". Ahh, Wash. I still miss you. "I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar."
This video caused me to buy this game for my Mom (who loves board games) for Christmas! While my Mom loves playing board games with our family, over-competitiveness has prevented us from having a consistently fun (and tearless) experience. The idea of a co-operative game is such a good idea, and the game-play from the video looked so fun, I decided it had to be under our tree today. We just played our first game, and we loved it! Everyone had a great time playing, and although we lost, we did so on the last turn of the game! Super fun and challenging, I can't wait to play again later today and in the future. Thank you so much TableTop for this video, you've generated a sale for Gamewright and you've brought hours of entertainment to our home!
I absolutely love the game. I've never played a bad game of it! I also love Tabletop. Great production, great cast, very enjoyable. It's really too bad y'all missed a couple of things (movement of the storm, excavating rules and paying actions for picking up a part). I feel like it really changed game balance, now. Still, looked like y'all had fun!:)
It wouldn't be the first time they got a rule wrong, but it might just be the editing. They edit a couple hours of play time down to the forty minute episode, so some stuff is gonna get left out.
Can we all just agree to give Alan Tudyk his own talkshow where he just tries to be as random as possible and the guest has to go along with it? Just let Alan Tudyk do his thing
No matter how they were playing, it was truly entertaining to watch, complete with character motivation and backstory, obstacles and romance. I WOULD DEFINITELY WATCH THIS MOVIE.
The first time I played Forbidden Desert was right after I had read the book, "Sand" by Hugh Howey. It gave the game even more depth. Not as much as reading "The Settlers of Catan" novel and how it made the Catan world come to life, but still.... The combination of Felicia Day, Alan Tudyk, and Jon Heder on this episode was HILARIOUS! I love the imaginary worlds they each contributed...kinda hard to pay attention to the actual game...if it were at my house I'd have given up and just done role-play for the rest of the afternoon!
So much fun character-background construction! I loved the improv way they built off one another's imaginations and added so many layers to the drama. Fun, fun, fun! (Also, Wash flies again!)
This cast is fantastic! And any game with Felicia in it is great! BUT BUT! I really have to point out that the direction of the arrow indicate the direction you move the tiles... not the hole.... #rulestickler #sorry Edit: Really regretted posting this comment now after reading Wil's blog. He is right, he is making this to entertain and initiating new gamers if possible (greatly appreciated) and not for the "ubergamers". Was I entertained? YES. Immensely so!
No its the direction the storm moves, so that makes it the direction the hole moves. And yes you are meant to be standing on a tile to excavate it... they are thinking of forbidden island rules where you can flip the ones next to you XP Edit: I Just looked it up and you are in fact right, I have always played it the way they are playing it though! XD Doesn't really matter though :P Sorry! :)
Actually, they ARE moving it the right way but I don't think they've realised it. I haven't watched the entire thing, just Alan's first turn (I should be writing my essay that's due tomorrow instead darnit!) and just had to look at the comments cause of the way they flipped tiles like Forbidden Island. Anyways, the tiles on the board are oriented in one direction, whereas the storm cards Wil draws are oriented the other way. There's a reason for the compass rose with the red arrow! (But of course now that I've watched a bit more I see that the graphics are doing it the wrong way. Oh well) I mean, the cards show tiles with an arrow. The logical way to read them would be "move the tiles in the direction of the arrow".
Edwin Blommaerts They also made it harder on themselves than they had to by missing good moves - like leaving the Climber out in the sun rather than having him pick up the Archaeologist to join them (actually, Climber and Navigator make a powerful combo - the Climber carries the Navigator around everywhere, letting the Navigator move himself 3 spaces per action too) - or when they spent two actions to move between diagonally adjacent tunnels... Overall, yeah, excavating adjacent tiles made it much, much easier on them - as shown by them winning without touching any of the water tiles...
Nerd moment: You're only supposed to be able to excavate (flip over) tiles when you're standing on them, so this game was a little easier than it should have been (which isn't saying much given _Forbidden Desert_). Still, really glad this game got featured and with such an awesome play group!
And of course I read Wil's blog post (wilwheaton.net/2014/11/forbidden-desert-on-tabletop/) after watching the video. At least they realized their mistake, yes? To be fair, I remember how we screwed up our first few games by forgetting that tunnels protect players from Sun Beats Down. You can imagine our perfect loss record at the time was mainly because of thirst.
They're excavating the wrong way. You excavate when "your pawn is on the desert side of a tile that does not have any Sand Markers on it, you may excavate it for 1 action." Also, the story is your party is in a helicopter to search for the legendary flying machine found in the Forbidden Desert, when the sand storm occurs. The helicopter crashes, and the only way to get out of the desert is to find the legendary flying machine and find its parts so your party can leave the desert. :P Love the show! I'd love to see you guys and gals play Dead of Winter! :D
23:45 Felicia, thanks for the LOL, when you "confessed" to us that you crashed the airship. And all of you, thanks for showing us this game. I love co-op games.
I really like Tabletop, and this is probably the most fun session I've seen, but they got a couple fundamental rules wrong! The biggest one is when excavating a tile you have to be on it first, can't just be next to it. And then also once a part of the flying machine is discovered, it stays on that tile and gets moved around by the storm; Wil was keeping the part in the same spot and moving tiles underneath it. Just had to mention it so viewers have a better grasp of the game. Otherwise really fun session! Oh, and Alan is awesome.
All 24 tiles are shuffled and placed in a 5x5 grid with storm starting in the middle and sand tiles are placed on the 8 tiles shown in the video that make up the diamond shape. The parts are not placed during setup. They are only placed once both clues have been excavated. So even if you peeked at all the tiles and went to the intersection of the 2 clues you could not find the item. If you are still there when the second clue is excavated (assuming the shifting tiles hasn't affected the location of the intersection) the item will appear right next to you.
Pre-watching comment: So he invited Felicia again. This is gonna be fun. Also Will, we ALL played Diplomacy, we know. Skypes were blocked, Facebook accounts were closed, carpooling ended over the plague that is that game.
CrowMercury actually, not everyone has played it. I know what the game is on a name recognition level, but I have never sat down and played a full game. :p I think I remember sitting down to start one, but having to do something and returning to the game having been started with a replacement...
Wow. Literally the very first turn of the game and they already screw the rules up. You can clear sand off of an adjacent tile, but to actually excavate (flip over) a tile, you have to be standing on it. In order to do what Alan did on turn one, you'd have to use 2 actions to clear off the two sand tiles, then use action three to move to one of them, another action to flip it, 2 more to get to the other tile, one more to flip that one, then a final action to get back to the starting point. By my math that's eight actions as opposed to the four you're supposed to get per turn.
Jeremiah: Aaaaahhh...!
McLickertitty: David, I love you!
Jeremiah: It's Jeremiah, you butthooole...!
Probably my favorite exchange in the episode.
Alan was born to be someone's cool uncle.
"-Just tell us who you are and what your power is.
-In the game?"
Oh, this one will be a treat.
I love how Alan was in character literally the entire time. Method Roleplaying, invented by Alan Tudyk.
someone needs to do a cut of Rogue One where all of K2SO's lines are replaced by Alan Tudyk's lines from this episode
@@arturoreyes2119 omg 😍
Makes you wonder what he was up to when he played Hei Hei 😂
I maintain he was drunk.
OMG, that beginning exchange tickled me a lot.
Wil: "I've been drinking water all day, and Jon's drinking water right now, Felicia is mostly water, and as it turns out, Alan is, uh, loaded up with coffee."
Alan: "THAT'S RIGHT!!"
"Why can't we just stay where we're bidden?!" LMAO :D
I can picture Wash saying that to Mal in Firefly so clearly lol
6 years later and I yell this every time we play Forbidden Island
Gotta love Alan Tudyk
Say that today. I know you mean nothing by it. No say it again.see what u did? civil unrest at the barrell of a gun. So anti American. No one now knows what it means to be one. I know. I was born one. I will die one.

There needs to be more of this. Comedians playing games is absolutely hilarious.
I love Alan Tudyk so frigging much. He is awesome in everything he does! His best role in my opinion is still Watt from A Knights Tale!!!
Love that movie. He was phenomenal in that and, of course, in Firefly.
+HolandaChiquita I ROBOT
Youngwook Lutesse-Kang Yeah he was great in that movie as well! I remember watching the BTS after watching the movie for the first time, and I almost lost i when I saw him walking in those weird grey/green pajamas's!

For me my favorite role of his will always be Firefly.

CountryMusicMann That is INSIDIOUS. This is a thing that needs to exist.
Arturo Reyes If I ever meet Wil Wheaton and get to talk with him for an hour or two, I'll get all the info Matt Leacock needs to make the game.
You are forgetting a key component. It has to take place in Waterdeep, with the rules saying that "One person (Preferably Felicia Day) controlling 3 characters, who scores points based on trolling the opponents
Includes Dr Hannah as a key NPC who you have to help with pointless quests.
I got far too ridiculously invested in this one. Definitely a contender for favourite episode ever.
I was really pulling for them too
MonarchsFactory I think this was one of my favourites too! I thought I might be though, what with Alan Tudyk playing :P I love your videos btw Dael.
I have mixed feelings. The people involved were fun but the major rules mistakes are frustrating. I was going to share the video with my nephew who just got the game but the rules mistakes would just confuse him.
Martyn Whitley Thankyou! :)
ABevs1 Just watch it *after* he learns the game. It's too bad it can't be a learning tool but it will still be fun for him.

Let's be honest, though... what Alan described is in _everybody's_ fanfic.
ChiliTomatoNoodle Yeah very funny guy! McLickATitty
I believe his name was McLiquorTitty.

Felicia's reaction to Alan saying his character was Dr. Mclickhertitty was hilarious

Doctor McLickertitty...this reminds me so much of the deleted scenes of Firefly where Alan just ad-libbed, like, everything.
IceMetalPunk I believe the correct spelling is McLichortitte... a fusion of Pict and Saxon origins but that can't be the first time someone has made that assumption...

IceMetalPunk I assumed it was Liquortitty.

This episode is just the best. Characters, roleplaying, a cooperative game, and Felicia is in it! Good times, really.
Alan Tudyk: arguably the best guest this show has ever seen
I lost it when he pulled out the sunscreen
Well he did play Wash that one time.
He has to return for another game!
I want Table Top to come back and have Alan Trudyk, Grant Imahara, and Jason Ritter
Lynda Stiefvater just want it to come back. Or for Will to make his own channel and start it over.
Alan Tudyk is hilarious. He may as well be playing with dinosaurs when he brings out the sunglasses and the sunscreen.
Makes you realize that playing Wash really wasn't much of a stretch for him, huh?

Ian Jones Liquor. He says it in the Gag reel.

Is there some kind of firefly game? :D
Yes, there is a super mega awesome firefly board game!
yes there is a good one. We are playing it a lot. Sadly, i got a willw syndrom so i have never win it. And im an owner.
Why was Alan not the pilot? I understand that as Wesley crusher, Wil has had experience as a navigator, but wash was the best damn pilot in the verse.

Two firefly references in the opening AND Tudyk is on the show. Good times indeed.

The Kayleigh reference was the best though.
One of the best episodes ever.

And damn you, Whedon, for killing Wash.
Wil brought up the whole thing about the "primary buffer panel falling off my gorram ship!" way earlier than that.
Deokflsa
I did notice that as well, but Wash's quote was imo much more appropriate, with Alan Tudyk being in this episode.
Now I want Wil to get the crew together to play Firefly the Board Game. I don't care how long the video is either.

***** Thats good. I remember it being played a few times at this year's super bowl party I went to. Game won every time.
Wil made a blog post about it wilwheaton.net/2014/11/forbidden-desert-on-tabletop/
As long as they had fun and tried to play in the spirit of the game, that is all that matters in my book.
The big reveal! I love Wil's reaction "Oh, that's so romantic"
Possibly my favorite combination of people at the table. Keep up the good work, G&S!
Anyone else here would LOVE to play a table RPG with Alan Tudyk ?
As DM or player, either way he would kill it.
Jon Heder's such a blast!

Anyways, the tiles on the board are oriented in one direction, whereas the storm cards Wil draws are oriented the other way. There's a reason for the compass rose with the red arrow! (But of course now that I've watched a bit more I see that the graphics are doing it the wrong way. Oh well)
I mean, the cards show tiles with an arrow. The logical way to read them would be "move the tiles in the direction of the arrow".

They also made it harder on themselves than they had to by missing good moves - like leaving the Climber out in the sun rather than having him pick up the Archaeologist to join them (actually, Climber and Navigator make a powerful combo - the Climber carries the Navigator around everywhere, letting the Navigator move himself 3 spaces per action too) - or when they spent two actions to move between diagonally adjacent tunnels...
Overall, yeah, excavating adjacent tiles made it much, much easier on them - as shown by them winning without touching any of the water tiles...
TheObviouslyObvious yap, doesn't really matter as long as you move the same way the entire game :)
i only watch to see people i like geeking at each other for half an hour
Isn't that kind of the premise of the entire show? :)
yep pretty much
Nerd moment: You're only supposed to be able to excavate (flip over) tiles when you're standing on them, so this game was a little easier than it should have been (which isn't saying much given _Forbidden Desert_).
Haha, I feel your pain dude.
Congrats on the Tabletop Victory. I loved this episode and the guest line up was amazing.
"She's like a Werewolf...but a Camel". Haha, love it.
i love how Alan was so into his character
Felecia keeps talking about how plump and fertile she is, and how much she wants a facial... I think I love her
Nice firefly reference... very "smooothh" X) ;)
Lain Kojima in my headcanon at takeoff, cued the ballad of serenity: "...can't take the sky from me"
They're excavating the wrong way. :P
Love the show! I'd love to see you guys and gals play Dead of Winter! :D
23:45 Felicia, thanks for the LOL, when you "confessed" to us that you crashed the airship. And all of you, thanks for showing us this game. I love co-op games.
I would like to point out that both Alan and Jon were in Star vs the Forces of Evil.
0:40 - This describes every game of Diplomacy EVER!
TIL Alan Tudyk played himself on Firefly.
Really good episode!
This may be the best episode yet. What a great group!
Gotta love it. "Get the ship back in the air where we can be a leaf on the wind. And now I'm safe."
Damn you Serenity.
"Brenda joined this exposition"...ironically appropriate.
Wait. Alan is a DOCTOR. Who travels THROUGH TIME.
Anthony121 who?
Nice
;)
I think I'm picking up what you're laying down... 😎
this was a quality episode of tabletop. well done.

I got this game for Christmas, my parents and I love to play this because it's like the game evolves to attack you back while you work together.
Best quote from the series so far. YOU HARLOT
What happens when the part is found in the eye of the storm??
It stays there until the storm moves a tile underneath it, then it stays on that tile.
I've never played the game and assumed as much.
How do you set up the game? I mean there is arrows pointing at things? Wouldn't you know the locations?
All 24 tiles are shuffled and placed in a 5x5 grid with storm starting in the middle and sand tiles are placed on the 8 tiles shown in the video that make up the diamond shape. The parts are not placed during setup. They are only placed once both clues have been excavated. So even if you peeked at all the tiles and went to the intersection of the 2 clues you could not find the item. If you are still there when the second clue is excavated (assuming the shifting tiles hasn't affected the location of the intersection) the item will appear right next to you.
ALL THE FIREFLY REFERENCES
Well with Wash on the show.. why not? hehe
Awesome Ep. Wil and his crew got me into playing games by watching these videos and now I'm somewhat addicted. This was a great cast.
I love that Wil used both of his dogs names as Captain Seamus Marlowe! ❤️
Wil made a response to rule mistake wilwheaton.net/2014/11/forbidden-desert-on-tabletop/
I also believe they moved the storm wrong as well.
Exactly!!! That's what I was thinking! They were doing it wrong!
Who cares when they're clearly having fun?
I loved the Firefly references... that show needs to come back.
The cast is so legendary for this episode lol. Awesome.
I do enjoy rewatching these again!
Love Alan Tudyk! Especially in Firefly.
