Despite my 7 inches wrist, the size seems ok, super comfortable n looks good on me. I have many other so called big watches tag heuers, Panerai n many huge buLky Gshocks... Thank you! As somebody with an 8" wrist, I appreciate watches of this size. The Hamilton Murph gets a lot of hate too. It seems like a lot of the watch community shames companies for making watches too big FOR THEM. I don't shame companies for making 38mm watches because they're too small for me.

    I wanted an unusually accurate quartz, and I landed on this one. I've just received it today, and I'm "over the moon" with it. I would have liked the lugs to be down-turned _slightly_ more (or -1mm lug-to-lug), but it's still comfy on my 20cm wrist, with only slight overhang. Overall the look, construction & features of the watch are really nice for the money, and the cool history behind it is the cherry on top. Personally I think this watch could be considered by anyone with >7" wrists, but it's always up to personal preference of course. I don't like Natos for this, because they add height to the watch. Without extra height, the watch doesn't wear terribly large. The new star of my collection!

    I think the 262khz movement is 42mm by itself, so no real way for them to shrink it without changing the movement, which imo is one of the main selling points. Luckily I have a fairly big wrist so can rock this or a seiko 'arnie' without issue. This might be my favorite as I love chronos being a racer, and this one has the looks, history and accuracy to make it hard to pick a different watch.

    Thank you for posting the follow up. I own this watch and adore it. I use my Lunar Pilot for racing too and prefer not to wear my smaller chronos for legibility and quick glancing. Also, the Bulova is super light. I too am constantly barraged by the “too big” comments and I appreciate you clearly pointing out the purpose of a tool watch. This frustrates me to no end! I get similar comments on my 41mm Tudor Heritage Ranger, which I actually use as a field watch. “It should have been 36mm”, they say. The Ranger is the IDEAL size if you actually use it for its intended purpose, as is the Lunar Pilot. Thanks again.

    The original Bulova Lunar Pilot is absolutely one of my favorite watches in my collection. I love the history behind the watch, and the overall quality and design-in particular, the long hourly/minute hands and perfect dial composition including the stark black and white contrasting. Honorable mentions are the matte and polished finishes and a raised sapphire crystal. This timepiece feels like a professional instrument, and it's a pleasure to wear. For those with smaller wrists like mine, IT IS NOT TOO BIG. However, if you choose to wear a NATO band, the watch may feel too large because it will sit a lot higher on the wrist. Personally, I love the black leather band that comes with the watch. I believe Bulova could not have done a better job both in terms of aesthetics and quality. Overall, Bulova did a masterful job executing this watch, especially for the price. It's a phenomenal value and presents itself as a much more expensive timepiece. Thank you Bulova for making the BLP affordable for everyone and thank you WA for the review.

    Very nice video with wonderful camerawork. Have had mine for over two years...the bracelet model. Having owned an Omega Speedmaster Professional from 1971, this watch brings as much joy.
    I sold the Speedmaster a few years ago because it required over $800 in servicing. I got $2,000 for it, plus an extra $400 for the skeleton back. My original intention was to buy a new Speedmaster, but then Bulova released the Lunar Pilot. Now a Speedmaster is in my rearview mirror.
    I have a large wrist so size is not an issue. However, I wish that Bulova would make this in a 42mm. Imagine if they offered it with a domed acrylic crystal, no date, and altered the second hand to sweeping? And maybe some small moon text on the face...kind of what is on the Submariner.
    That said, this is my daily watch, and has been since purchase. I own a few watches, including a Panerai Black Seal, but this is my go-to. The accuracy still boggles my mind. The movement is a technical wonder, and highly underrated.
    The bracelet is similar to my Speedmaster model from 1971...except higher quality...much higher quality. The Lunar Pilot is a cross between the Speedmaster Professional and the Speedmaster Mark ll, with the under-crystal tachymeter...except a nicer design. Look up the Mark ll and you'll see. In fact the Omega Speedmaster Mark ll has been reissued, and for the life of me, I don't know why anybody would choose that over the Bulova Lunar Pilot?

    • @WristwatchAddiction
      @WristwatchAddiction  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had never considered the similarity to the mark II but you are exactly right.
      Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to this one. It’s like having the best of two of my favorite speedys rolled up into a single more accurate timepiece for under a quarter of the price. 🤔
      Awesome comments. Thank you 🙏

      huge. gigantic. immense. gargantuan.
      the 45 is not bad, it's the 53mm lug to lug and basically no curve that makes it not fit the wrist. I love the story and it's beautifully executed, but that 53 feels like a mile.
      42mm would be just perfect.. On the new black one they eliminated the date and changed the font to the original piece.

      @irwindelosreyes6583 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tracywilkinson1820 I have the same observation as yours.
      When I look at the watch sitting on a table without a strap I can see that the lowest edges of the lugs are on a higher plane than the case back. The designer should have given it a more curvy profile and located the spring pin holes a little bit lower than where they are now. As it is it doesn't hug the wrist well which makes it unstable if the band or strap is not tight enough.
      I resorted to wearing it on 22mm nato which gave it more stability. Those are my only complaints. But I still love it despite the shortcomings.

    Just stumbled across this video…as I am seriously considering getting a BLP, and I have seen a few reviews already on YT. It is a size that suits my 8.5 wrist. I saw another popular YT watch reviewer say he contacted the local supplier and they sent him the watch for free as it happens, then he bagged it for being too big for his scrawny wrist. Bulova need to sell a lot of watches to make up for the freebie, and they got bagged for providing a watch to a guy with a small wrist ! I would have asked his wrist size first and denied him the watch unless he bought it myself..btw he does it to other larger watches too, not only this one. I just don’t understand people complaining about a watch with known and easily researched dimensions that they know will not fit them. Anyway that’s the world we live in I guess. Very nice review, I am still seriously looking at getting one and I know I will enjoy it fitting my wrist.cheers!

  • @CaptainRon956
    @CaptainRon956 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a 7” wrist and the watch stays centered on my wrist with the carbon fiber leather strap. With the NATO strap the watch rotates away from me on my wrist. So my workaround was to put the nato strap on backwards. Put the buckle end on the bottom so it’s towards you. That way when you cinch it up you’re pulling it towards you and it will stay centered that way. I do a lot of outdoor activities and I wear my lunar pilot all the time. I wear mine 7 days at week. It’s been in rain, in the shower, sweated on. Not a single mark on it at all and it’s been nearly a year of ownership.

    Great walkaround. Despite the size, this timepiece is LEGIBLE. Here's hoping that a future reissue includes a 12-hour chronometer, like the prototype it's based on. This bead-blasted (satin) 1st Gen with date-window and dual-straps looks like the spring-bars are positioned further out along the lugs. Whereas imagery of the alternate satin 1st Gen with the bracelet seem to suggest that those spring-bars are placed closer to the dial along the lugs, making some of the tougher / thicker NATO straps difficult to thread. If you intend to swap out 3rd party straps, this 1st Gen (or perhaps either the shiny or black 2nd Gen w/o date window) may be the way to go.

    • @hudldevice1092

      I now own one- black version with their leather NATO strap. Impression on first blush- I love it. Just the right size for what I expected and wanted. My wrist can just carry off the size well. A non nonsense watch IMO- easily readable and solid. Without a metal bracelet- which I personally don't think suits it- remarkably light. It is also without question a men's watch- period. No fruity, unsex ish timepiece here!

    • @WristwatchAddiction
      @WristwatchAddiction  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only way I’ve seen to put one on it due to the issue your having from the bracelet version is wrap the NATO on and THEN place the springbar. Using curved springbars also seems to help. Let me know if either of those work for you!

      Yeah, for some inexplicable reason, Bulova uses different lug placement on the bracelet version vs. the strap version. The lugs on the bracelet are very tight. If you want a strap on it, really the only option is curved lugs, or really force the springbars in with the nato in place.

    My small wrist is 8.25". I have the black model and the lug width is 20 mm. However, you can use some leather NATO straps in the 22 mm sized and they give some extra stability. I'd always recommend wearing a NATO strap for security, in case one of the pins fails. The quasi-NATO band that comes with the black watch is 2-piece and doesn't offer any security if one of the pins falls out. It's easy to lose a watch if the pin fails and not realize it until later. The 22 mm leather NATO straps also look a lot better. I added a link below for the ones that I use.
    Generally, you can't use the heavier, stiffer 22 mm nylon NATO straps, they are too stiff and don't conform, you have to use the 20 mm size.

    • @larrysmith6797
      @larrysmith6797 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't understand the "extra stability" of a 22mm NATO. The standard quasi NATO style 20mm band is fine. As for pin failure, it has never happened to me in over 55 years of wearing watches.

    Bulova CANNOT make this watch any smaller. The 262kHz chrono movement itself is 40mm dia so the 45mm case size is already crowding the movement. If anyone wants a smaller dia watch, they will have to sacrifice and settle for a lesser accurate movement. This defeats the purpose and goes against Bulova’s history with the space program, providing the most accurate instruments they could. And it’s a work watch. It should be bigger than a regular watch. In my 7.25” wrist it looks perfectly awesome.

    • @WristwatchAddiction
      @WristwatchAddiction  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I agree mostly, & never want them to move away from this 45mm 262khz highbeat Quartz movement as an option,
      they could really benefit from adding an optional automatic or manual version in 40 or 42mm into the Lunar Pilot line in the same way Omega added automatic options to their own Speedmaster line in smaller, more dynamic cases.
      There would be more than enough room to accept a Citizen Group (owns Bulova) owned automatic movement in a 42mm case. They already do this in the Devil Diver limited edition 40mm from 2021 & the current 42mm re-Editions.

      I don’t remember off the top of my head. I believe it’s a 321 battery. Mine got a couple of years out of the first one. Battery change service? No. Very simple with the right tools or $20 or less from a competent jeweler. Movement service cost is unknown as I’ve never had one have any issues other than a need for battery replacement (personally or at the shop I work at).

    I've had this watch for a couple of years. I've never really thought about the size, I have no problem with it in that regard at all. I bought it new on the steel bracelet with butterfly clasp and I have no problem with scratching. I'd say it ranks among the top three most accurate watches I own (excluding smart watches) along with a Citizen Radio Controlled (which syncs with a control signal without the need of any other device, but is kept accurate by an external signal, and cost about the same as the Bulova) and my Longines Conquest VHP (Very High Precision) which cost about twice as much as the Bulova and doesn't have a chronograph. The chronograph is extremely precise as the 3 o'clock dial rotates once per second and the main chronograph second hand sweeps. It's not a snap-back, so reset takes a bit of time. I love this watch and would recommend it to anybody who is looking for a good quality quartz watch at a reasonable price (i.e. less than £1 000). I actually prefer both the Bulova and the Longines to the Citizen because they are accurate without having to rely on any external synchronisation, and this just feels more "clean". Of course, I prefer mechanical watches which come nowhere near the same accuracy as even very cheap quartz but can cost considerably more than expensive quartz watches, but that's another story. I also own a mechanical Bulova, which is also a great watch. Bulova is a brand you can be proud to wear on your wrist.

    Amen! These people think that *EVERY* watch should be designed for their lady-sized wrists! God forbid that a relative handful of watches be made to fit people with 8" wrists 🙂. The only other complaint that I hear about this watch is that Bulova pairs the matte-finished case with a polished bracelet. Now, *THAT'S* something worth whining about ;-)

    • @WristwatchAddiction

      I hear that complaint too & honestly, that’s why I went with the strap version but having seen the first Gen fitted to the bracelet in real life now, I actually prefer the one I didn’t purchase. So glad the newly released 43mm is packaged with BOTH a bracelet & strap. Making people choose between two different, non-interchangeable, drilled lug placements on the first Gen is my only real quam with it. 👍

    I own one and I love it.
    Bulova can improve this design by bending the lugs so the spring bars would sit a little bit lower.
    As it is the watch looks like the case back is sitting on the wrist with the lugs protruding to the sides in a straight line.
    The lugs need to curve down a little bit more to follow the contour of the wrist.
    Then the spring bars can be located a little bit lower than where they are now.
    If they build it this way I will definitely buy another one. Maybe in PVD.
