Oh, my god. Two genius. Frank Sinatra and Rita Hayworth. The entire scene practically without dialogs, but with a whole text being said only with their eyes and facials expressions. It took me to tears.
Although I am a huge Sinatra fan, I recommend that you do yourself a favour and check out the Tony Bennet/Lady Gaga version, recorded when Tony was well into his nineties - ( 92... I believe). It is so good , that I do believe the great Frank Sinatra would have sincerely, and publicly applauded them
Frank Sinatra was so unique, not just because of the voice per se, but the way he put a song over, breaking conventionality, sometimes ahead, sometimes behind the beat, but in that effect, TELLING A STORY as he sung, not just singing words....Knowing exactly how to work with his band….it is a special talent that critics of his voice fail to see or realize, and the reason why, as commented on here many times, he OWNS his songs and no one else rarely can do justice to them once he has had a go at it!
I'll add that he sings like a man. He doesn't reach for all the notes. He doesn't even try to reach the notes. He keeps it as a man should sound, maybe so that men can sing his music too.
The muted trumpet behind Sinatra is played by Bobby Sherwood, a vastly talented musician, who played the guitar, trumpet, arranged for various bands and led his own big band.
What a magical performance. Sinatra 's interprtation of a song was simply unique. Sinatra is the absolute artist, what ,a talent that will live for ever .
Absolutely. This is among my favorite stories of 'Classic Hollywood'. Though still a 'big name', Rita - arguably "The" pre-eminent screen Love Goddess of the previous decade - was in the inevitable 'downward' arc of her spectacular career. The billing also made perfect sense for this film, "Pal Joey": sandwiching Sinatra between Hayworth and the new 'queen' of the Columbia lot, Kim Novak. Just then approaching the height of her stardom, with Monroe in NY studying at the Actor's Studio, from '57-59 Novak was among the biggest female movie stars in the world. She had just won a battle with Columbia to be paid commensurate with her new star status. So at that moment, Novak had the clout to have 'demanded' she be billed above Hayworth. But from what I've read, Novak too had immense respect for Hayworth. Sinatra's deference to Hayworth was, as you say, a galant move that lent the entire film an air of class that's palpable still today. Hayworth was apparently very sweet to her 'successor', Novak. Although 'trouble' between the two had been predicted by the gossips, every account I've read affirms Hayworth and Novak got along wonderfully. No doubt Sinatra's preemptive gesture lessened any potential stress for Hayworth. In what was to be her second to last film for Columbia after nearly 2 decades, she was allowed to 'exit' her home Studio with dignity. Literally 'on top'. And the film was a hit, to boot. As Sinatra himself said: "Class with a capital 'K'!"
Frank Sinatra - The Lady is a tramp (Pal Joey, 1957) i never saw that in anything i saw in relation to musicals. but that's due to my hating musicals... that said, sinatra, akin to elvis, was geared to singing.. it was his bag, so to speak... so it was natural he should create a large sprawling music video, if you will... seduction songs. ummmmmmm.... the whole notion of a musical starring elvis or sinatra would suggest the entire perlocution was one big seduction scene..... i wonder if they got laid due to this penchant they had for crooning?
RITA IS SOOOO GREAT HERE....TOWARDS THE END OF HER CAREER BUT NEVER BETTER...OF COURSE SINATRA IS AT HIS BEST HERE ALSO...UNDERATED FILM...THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST NUMBERS IN THE FILM....
of course, Sinatra included this song in every concert he ever sang...."We just can't leave this out ever, it's about one of my favorite girls".....is how he introduced it......

Fred Astaire said Rita Hayworth was one of his favorite dancing partners. he said she would learn dance routines first time around! She was absolutely gorgeous in her Hay Day! Sinatra must have been short. Dancing with Rita she's practically the same height, even though she has heals on.
As a confirmed, lifelong Rock and Metal head,i have such a weakness for Frank. I'm hoping EVERYONE does. Just gets me every time with that confident phrasing and great voice. Superb.
My favorite Sinatra song from his movie career (although "My Kind of Town" from "Robin and the Seven Hoods" comes close) and that backwards little kick as he exits with Rita just kills me.

Sinatra learned from Harry James the famous trumpet player how to hold his breath while singing that’s why when he’s exhaling smoke he can still sing.....it made his phrasing of lyrics unique....
I watched his guys and dolls movie perhaps a thousand times, initially for the music and the story. But after a thousand times, i find that the sinatra voice was the number 1 attraction
Sinatra at his absolute peak. The Capitol years were the best. What talent! He was The Voice!
Oh, my god. Two genius. Frank Sinatra and Rita Hayworth. The entire scene practically without dialogs, but with a whole text being said only with their eyes and facials expressions. It took me to tears.
Hayworth was so elegant.
That's a total masterpiece at all angles
I love seeing and hearing this again and again 💕!!!
Iconic. Maybe his greatest performance on film. Arguably the greatest jazz singer ever. Civil Rights warrior.
He is so good.
When Frank sings a song.... any song, no one else should ever sing it again. The definitive version has been done.
Jim Aroo
even his covers? like If i didnt care? i dont know man i think i like the ink spots version better imnsho.

Forget Kim Novak I would have gone for Rita Hayworth. The dangerous red head.

Perfectly said .
I can sum it up in four words.
Frank Sinatra has class!
Fantastic Frank and Beautiful, talented and sassy Rita
One of the TOP entertainers of all time there will never be another like him
His voice was at its peak in 1956/57 , magic phrasing, diction and interpretation of a song, the world will never hear the like ever again.
A magical moment between two great stars, with an amazing song, and a tight band. A fabulous clip. Bravo!!
The muted trumpet behind Sinatra is played by Bobby Sherwood, a vastly talented musician, who played the guitar, trumpet, arranged for various bands and led his own big band.
Muted brass always sounds like the big city , about three in the morning , in the rain !!!
This part was EPIC!!! As soon as I realized what song he was singing, I was cracking up. Gotta love this man!
How beautiful was Rita Hayworth ! .. Wow !

In my opinion, one of the greatest musical movies of all time.
LOL her face @1:53 is hilarious! Rita Hayworth what an absolutely stunning woman......
The look on his face when they’re dancing, and she leans back and says “come now, beauty,” is one of the most subtle yet greatest looks ever.
Sinatra actually insisted with the Studio that Rita get top billing even though Frank was the bigger star at the time. That's what you call class.

One of the best musical seduction scenes ever filmed in movies. It established Sinatra's persona for the rest of his career.
I think Sinatra's persona was already well established by then -- this was 1957
He was seducing her?
@@dsfpiuhasdf oh yeah!
"One of the best musical seduction scenes ever filmed in movies" You can say that again. I want to sing like Sinatra in this scene.

ageless style - not just the delivery of the song, but the whole way the scene was choreographed, particularly Sinatra with the Band
the way he snaps his fingers still looks cool - to this day!
I love how the manager fired Joey and then expected him to perform for the rich lady. LOL
He didn’t fire him joey(frank) made a deal with him that if he doesn’t get the rich lady back by Saturday he’d be fired

Agreed. One of the best movie song scenes ive ever watched.
Sinatra simply the best!
Frank was smooth. Best version ever.
Смотрю, снова и снова. Какой шарм, мастерство! Браво! ❤
When I saw this on tv, I thought it was a 40s movie. Frank still looked so young, like he did in the 40s, even in '57.
Well, he was all of 41 in 57....
