  • In Cameron Park California, there is a nice, seemingly normal suburban neighborhood. But there is something a little different about this particular neighborhood.

Here from Tom Scott's mailing list, incredible video

I wonder how I got on Tom Scott's mailing list. I had a large spike of views from 8am to 9am Pacific time this morning from "direct or unknown." It seems like it may be from his mailing list but now I wonder how that happened.
Thanks for watching and for shining a little light on the mystery of where those views came from.

@@LetUsTryThat Here's his write up about it, I think the newsletter is on his website as well:
"And this feels like a video from my early days: Let Us Try That visits a strange neighbourhood in Cameron Park, California that's a "fly-in community". I actually did ask to film at Cameron Park once, but never got any response from the folks there. My channel was far too established by that point to do this sort of simple just-passing-by visit (I'd have needed to actually land or take off, and I'd have needed to interview someone local!) so it's nice to see a video that tackles all the main points. I do miss making videos like this."

@LetUsTryThat Oh no! I'm so sad that Sam's Town is closed, too. Used to go there at least a couple of times a year for probably over 20 years. I loved the gypsy lady fortune teller in black lace in her glass case! I always said I wanted to buy her. And of course, anytime we went to San Francisco, we had to stop at the Nut Tree, and on the way home, Howard Johnson's (in Fairfield? Vallejo?) for the best clam strips on earth! I wonder if they are still open?

I’ve driven through this neighborhood and it’s super cool. Unfortunately, a lot of the houses are rundown and some of the homeowners get constant phone calls from the 70s wanting their houses back. Also, it’s kind of interesting some of the houses having converted into Mechanic shops, this is because most of the garages are two stories which are perfect for putting in a vehicle lift. But it’s definitely a neat neighborhood to drive through.

they also use the large streets for big annual car shows for the entire county, also during that event all the plane owners take their planes onto the street for everyone to come check them out, some are vintage, experimental, or from ww2, it's a really cool place.

There's another similar neighborhood not far away in Sacramento that backs up to Executive Airport. Even though the planes don't share the road with cars, many of the houses have airplane garages and there are taxiways behind the houses that lead to the airport. There's a surprising number of "supercommuters" around the Folsom to Placerville area who work in SF and San Jose. The drive between Sac and the bay is almost always very busy in the morning, and the first trains of the day on the Capitol Corridor reach full capacity by the time the train leaves Davis. A family member of mine did administrative assistant work for a someone whose house overlooked the valley (El Dorado Hills) and flew out of Cameron Park to do just about everything, what a different life from the rest of us!

I've not landed at Cameron Park, but we've landed at half a dozen or so of these fly-in communities as part of the Go Fly America challenge. There's 1 at Trinity Lake, 2 West of Davis, 1 NW of Fresno not including private strips like Sea Ranch. And we landed at one in OR at Yamhill, and there's one on the NV-CA border near the place where you can rent a helicopter gunship. And there are likely others from the era of people thinking about flying cars.

People built all these expensive houses up against the airfield... they then sold the airfield land to become a shopping mall, leaving people with huge garages that opened up onto a chain link fence. One guy even has a plane permanently trapped in his back yard; I assume he couldn't fly it out before they built the fence.
