One of the best conducted video tours of a house that I've seen on TH-cam. The host was very well prepared and made important comments throughout the tour that made it more than the "usual wright commentary" that comes with less capable presenters. This has always been one of my favorite Wright houses and I hope to visit it some day in the future.

Agree. My Mom’s family came out to Pacific Grove in the late 30’s. In later life, I’ve wanted to return (Pacific Grove/Carmel/Monterey) to a similar style home. This home really feels like old California; love it!

She lives on a hill overlooking the sea,
With only her dogs for good company,
She doesn't need less, she doesn't need more,
Just the sounds of the waves crashing into the shore.

What a treat. I bought a wooden house in the Florida woods which was custom built in 1972 and inspired by the Clinton Walker house. The angles wore on me and I took one room where the kitchen is and made it into a square bedroom. I tried to find info on the Walker House years ago without luck. Now this. Thank you so much.

My God! The hose is simply spectacular! I hope you live in it!! The lot is breathtaking! So warm and inviting and cozy! You could watch the days go by watching the sea! Wonderful tour, thank you for sharing it ❤️ The only thing I’m not fond of is the fireplace. It looks like a big black hole. Is it muriatic acid that cleans soot? Might be worth a clean. He detail’s are amazing. Piano hinges, flat hallway door handles, compact baths. Oh your sweet grandmother, so special to see her room! How lovely when she visited her Mom. I hope you knew your Great Grandmother. I was blessed to know only one of mine till I was around 8. She was lovely, and her only great granddaughter. Very special.
She married at 81? You could not give me that house to take another husband. 😅😅😅
She was a feisty woman!! Unfortunately, my stepfather took my grandfather’s beautiful river house from me. He died and left it too his grandson. Very bad planning on my Mother’s part. I’ll never get over it, nor ever forgive her treacherous actions. As on only child, and only grandchild I did not have the funds to fight it in court. I now live in a charming very small cottage on the Georgia coast, that I paid for. But it will never be home. I am now just waiting for God.
Blessings on this house. Protect it at ALL cost for your children and their children 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I've had the good fortune to tour FLW homes all over the country, and I have to say that this was one of the most informative tours I've ever had! Mr. Henderson not only gives detailed explanations of the architectural features, but injects occasional entertaining anecdotes that definitely augment his presentation. I particularly liked the one about the height of the showerhead accommodating the female client's salon-styled hair - brilliant! And that sunken garbage can with a rock on its lid was wonderful. A spectacular setting and a truly beautiful house. Thank you!

Giving your trash man a 'nice Christmas present' is a family tradition for my wife and I. Our trash man here in the countryside of Central Texas has been very accommodating especially when we moved back to this old family farm in 2020 and he took away all that we piled up by the one trash bin. It is very satisfying to share what we have with others.

Jokes aside, it makes a lot of sense for the person using the space to understand how it’s actually going to be used as opposed to how it looks for a magazine shoot. The sunken trash can is a cool idea but I kind of cringe imagining how that stayed clean.

Probably my favorite house design, so dramatic against the backdrop of the ocean. Wright had experimented with houses that hug the seashore, but they were usually vertically oriented. The horizontal connection to the ground near the shore makes it look right where it needs to be. Wright was at his best when it came to connections to water, be it Fallingwater or this.

Back in the late 60’s I did a Term Paper on Frank Lloyd Wright for my Art Major project. I read Mrs. Wright believed in Prenatal Instinct. While pregnant with Frank, Mrs. Wright sat in the woods, under the trees painting while listening to Classical Music. Knowing, through osmosis, her unborn child was benefiting invitro. It was the best paper I had ever written! My art teacher flailed her arms, yelled at me in front of the Art Class screaming what a ridiculous idea that was. She said the woman must’ve been crazy. I knew Mrs. Wright was not! She was ahead of her time. The Art Teacher gave me a ‘D’! While carrying my son, I followed in Mrs. Wright’s footsteps!
Lew Penfield a Mayflower descendent was good friends with my mother and I. Lew was great friends with Frank Lloyd Wright. He lived in a Wright home. He and Frank Loyd Wright designed the home together. Of course, it’s deep in the woods, along a musically shimmering river bed. Lew shared the story of his friendship with Frank Lloyd Wright. I believe they met in Art School perhaps Chicago. Lew Penfield became a well-known local artist and also taught Art Classes at Mayfield High School. Lew asked Wright to help him design another home that Lew wanted to build. Lew said Frank Lloyd Wright called him and said the plans were in the mail. The day Lew joyously received the new Wright/Penfield Architectural Plans, is the same day Lew found out Frank Lloyd Wright had just died. How serendipitous! What a sad story. Lew’s story still breaks my heart after all of these decades.
The last Lew told me is that his own son was suing him for those architectural plans. Lew was a very old man at this time. What greed must have been eating his son alive.
By the way, my family name is Walker. My grandpa John was born on the ship leaving Scotland for America. I believe Frank Lloyd Wright was of Scottish descent also. When I was a little girl in Catholic School the Nun asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I told her that I wanted to be an Architect or an Astronaut. The Nun laughed and told me that would not be possible because I am a girl!
    Thank You For Listening

Wright's designs are wonderful pieces of sculpture. Everybody seems instantly drawn to them (including myself). But he always seemed to be weak when it came to engineering. Having to rebuild the seawall would be something a 1st year engineer could spot. And I can remember reading about how they had to close "Falling Water" for a long time to put more steel into it as all the cantilevered sections were sagging. But I'm still glad these projects got built even with their flaws and how they inspired many of Wright's disciples to create even grander works. I'm especially fond of John Lautner's work that clearly continues the Frank Lloyd Wright legacy.

Your grandmother was a formidable woman indeed! Few can boast of forcing Frank Lloyd Wright to design a compromise. Thank you for a wonderful presentation of a beautiful work.

It would make me very satisfied to know the family could continue to live in this house for many more generations. It’s a wonderful thought. Makes me feel at home even without a home.

This is truly one of the greatest FLLW videos that will ever be made. Who wouldn't be thrilled to spend time in this house? The rarity of a site like this can not be overstated. With waves crashing against the terrace !!!!!! The giant bay window effect is much more pronounced than usually seen in Wright's work. To me the site is significantly better than Fallingwater because it provides spectacular views along with proximity to friends, restaurants, etc etc. Wright tended to be grandly indifferent to those aspects of his clients lives, he wanted his designs to be photographed surrounded by pristine Nature with a capitol N ( though Robert Stern claims he actually adored spending time in NYC because of the social whirligig with himself at the center though he would NEVER admit to it).🙂🙂❤️💯

I was in Carmel in April 2023 and stumbled across the Mrs. Clinton Walker House, which was new to me. What a pleasant surprise! It looks relatively small from the outside, but takes perfect advantage of its location and surroundings. Many thanks to Mr. Henderson for the tour of the interior, the stories of its construction, and his personal recollections of staying in the house.

This is the third time I’ve watched this video. What a magnificent home in such a wild and gorgeous location. I am 72 and recall seeing pictures of it as a kid and knowing it was one of Mr Wright’s home. This and Falling Water are my favorite places that he designed. You are so lucky that your family still owns the property and you have kept it in its originality and well maintained. Your story lines about the property and its construction were very informative and interesting while not going into a dissertation on Frank Lloyd Wright. Thank you so much. ❤

Thank you for sharing a view of your lovely home. I admire Mr. Wright's innovative use of stone and light to create striking living spaces. The kitchen door to the outside is a testament to your grandmother's will and vision toward her own convenience. The hidden trash can is genius. There are other wonderful points to admire, but I loved that one. Again, thank you.

I agree with Frank on the trash can 😊. You see beautiful modern architectural designed houses and it amazes me, after all that planning and expense -the recycling and trash bins, gas tanks and air conditioning units all get plonked in very visible horrible spots.😅

Thank you so much for curating this tour of your family's beautiful home. And how fortunate you are to be able to keep it in your family. We're fortunate to live in a mid century home my uncle had designed for his family in 1951 and completed about 1952. It's always interesting to see design elements that originally were designed by Wright that filtered out into the mid-century designs. Ours has extensive glass walls, open concept design, the small kitchens (and the small showers you mentioned), and cabinetry and furnishings that were integral parts of the design. One of my favorite items of the house that you mentioned in the Wright design are the in-slab heating. A boiler was located in a utility closet and water pumped through the pipes in the floors. Even on the coldest days of winter here in Arkansas the house was always comfortably warm. Your Great Grandmother was so fortunate to have had Frank Lloyd Wright design her home and I'm sure it was her great joy all her life. GTW, two thumbs up for his solution to the garbage can problem! True genius!
