Not wanting to play God of War 2018 to play Ragnarok is insane. That’s like wanting to watch The Two Towers without watching The Fellowship of the Ring.
I have to say that I could see GoW making Connor care about story, however as soon as a certain mission starts there's a high chance he loses his new found appreciation again.
@@frostyllusion4391 the Ironwood mission. I personally have no problem with it, but I can absolutely see people, especially Connor, getting bored by it, as it is quite long and Atreus playstyle is more limiting.
I don’t know. He has gone on record as saying that he’s not a huge fan of narrative-heavy games. Even though the gameplay itself is pretty good, he might be turned off by all the cutscenes and long periods of just walking around.
This Fall for Games was amazing. Managed to 100% Bayonetta 3, Pokemon Scarlet, and God of War Ragranok tonight. This year ended strong mates. Happy holidays yall.
God of War's core story is pretty easy to follow, and very well written, especially love how the dialogue while walking rlly develops the characters and worldbuilding. But if you want to get into the lore, it's very complicated, but the game doesn't require you to, you can enjoy the story either way
Can completely agree with pretty much everything Garnt said. Ragnarok made me legit cry at the end and i love everything about it with all my heart. Glad I 100% it as well. I do also have to give Connor some credit at 10:10, i prefer going into most games blind and figuring everything out on my own, not relying on the external sources like articles, wikipedia and those god awful TH-cam videos and shorts that spoil everything and treat the audiences like idiots.
One of the things I appreciate the most is the explanation for the eternal flame. There's basically a quest line built into the game to honor a developer (who was dating another one of the developers) who died during the time that it was being made. Their partner asked the devs if they could leave some small hint in the game but they allowed him to make an entire quest and storyline that essentially explains their love story.
I find it super cringe when people say: "it has souls-like elements in it", a hard fight is now categorized as "souls-like"? Difficulty is exclusive to Dark Souls games? Let me break down what truly consists of the souls-like formula: 1. Small health bar, you can die in a few hits. 2. Enemies respawn when resting, even these resting checkpoints are not too common in other games. 3. Absolute barebones story, kill these 4-5 bosses and game is done, it doesn't matter why, just do it. 4. Very cool bosses and enemies, very cool locations, very mysterious and intriguing atmosphere. 5. Different builds, different weapons, different spells, high replayability. If you think about it, this is generally how classic games were made, they were mainly fun! The games are unforgiving, but when you overcome that challenge you are rewarded!
With god of war (Norse games) you can honestly play them back to back and just consider them one massive amazing experience, just pretend there was a time skip
"Man, to play the older one" is such a notorious murderer for chances to get a timeless experience. GOW 2018 wasn't only old, it was still a masterpiece that did some aspects a little better than Ragnarok. I swear, lots of people suffer from being diserviced just because it is Old. Hell, Play Portal 1 and 2. Old as heck, yet absolute Gold. As if newer games mean closer to perfection. Surely, Cyberpunk 2077, COD Vanguard, or even Battlefield 2042 Top GOW 2018 just because they are newer.
The word "Masterpiece" has been abused like the word "Literally". No diss to you, but let's not act like GoW2018 is a mastered craft of video game engineering, it has flaws and short comings. Even with that it is one of the greatest games ever made.
@@GrownManPat I do not mean to abuse the word "Masterpiece", and I am well aware of GOW 2018's flaws. Its just that I personally think GOW 2018 is a masterpiece and is phenomenal. But since it does have flaws, I don't expect everyone to think the same and I won't force anyone to my opinion but I cannot be convinced about it not being a masterpiece.
I felt the same way after playing Hollow Knight. It's the first metroidvania I've played and after finishing it, I played several others but none have filled the void I feel.
I’m not far enough into the game to call it life changing (I just met Freyr in Vanaheim) but I will say that it’s definitely a lot more difficult than the last game as far as normal mode is concerned! The enemies hit harder, health pickups and money early on are kind of scarce, and health pickups don’t restore as much health! It’s a great game, it’s just harder than I expected it to be (compared to the previous game anyway)!
Normal enemies I think are harder this time around but for sure the optional bosses are way easier. Still challenging but there weren't many that had me sweating as much as the first game. (Also could mean I'm better at the game now than I was as at 19 tho lol)
I agree I think they didn't want to spend like 10 years making two more games (which is understandable) to finish the story so they decided to cram it all in one game as best as they could which all things considered ended up pretty well even if the ending was a tad rushed feeling
@@Dell-ol6hb they definitely made the right decision making it a duopoly because what did we miss out on? Freyr uniting the elves? I don’t think anyone cares to see that 🤣 it’s on to china or Egypt now 😎
God of war 4 was a fantastic soft reboot/ continuation of the original God of war games story gameplay takes a bit to get going in 4 but once it gets going it goes hard Ragnarok takes that and Jacks it up to 11 and imo deserves game of the year
I hate the hand holding they do for solving puzzles. It should be an insult to gamers' cognitive skills that devs set the bar *that* low on the new age gamers' thought process. Like I know mental instabilities are running rampant these days, but its something not clicking. Not that they're stupid.
I on the other hand absolutely welcome, not willing to spend 20 minutes in one area absolutely destroying my immersion because of a fuckin puzzle! Plus that shouldn't even be a fuckin complain because there is a setting to extend the damn help timer
It's good for accessability help, but it would be nice to have an option to dial it down and/or to make the characters shut up with their hints. Yet to play Ragnarok but hated that in Horizon:FW. Normallly, because I already knew what Ieeded to do, it was just executing it. So the character hints tod me what I already knew and just proceeded to drive me crazy :P
Elden ring lore is like a novel, you need to read the item description, some writings in some paper or walls. GoW lore is like a movie, you see the emotion on the character's face
The complaint about this game that I hate seeing the most is that it's a "Movie" because not every single game has to have a non linear story. There is nothing wrong with it having a lot of cutscenes because it still has fun gameplay
I too am one who played Elden Ring but couldn’t get into it (yet), but am enjoying the heck out of GOW Ragnarok. Just as Conner is encouraging Grant to finish Elden Ring, he too should give Gow a chance… as I can see both guys are on the fence of if the games will be as great as everyone says.
I agree with his point about Soulsgames versus something like God Of War, like playing through a souls game is fun sure but the story isn't really a part of the game in the same way as it is for something like the Last of Us or God Of War, it's just sorta in the background and you have look and read shit to get an idea of what is going on and the lore and history, which there's nothing wrong with that per se but for me personally it's just way less interesting and I'm just not interested enough to actually go and figure out what the hell is going on beyond what they just tell you playing through the game. So everytime I'll beat a boss it feels good but it doesn't feel as satisfying as if I beat a difficult boss and there was actually some relevant plot/storyline attached to it and eventually it's just not satisfying enough for me to justify continuing to sink time into the game and I'll drop it before finishing it.
Hmmm, when thinking about it the only reason why I killed hard optional bosses in Soulsborne games were because of sense of achievement + loot (item, weapon, currency). No story is required to see a boss and wanting to kill it.
It's the exact same way in God Of War. There are really hard optional bosses for items, weapons, and currency, but there is also a reason for us to beat them withing the story
Same here completed God of War Ragnarok with 100% platinum two days ago. Still taking it all in, watching the behind the scenes and spoilercast how this game was produced.
@@youarecorrectandiamwrong.8646 he said "two days ago" not finished it in two days... but you're probably an Elden Stans so i don't expect much from you
I didn't think going back to play the 2018 game for Ragnarok was worth it until I did and oh my God it's such a good game I'm perfectly fine exploring it and keeping Ragnarok on the back burner until I'm satisfied
As someone who got a PS5 truly just to play GoW: Ragnarok, and hasnt played a God of War game since Chains of Olympus on PSP... I feel like I was still able to get every emotional punch and beat from the story even just seeing the recap video they include in the main menu, and by readingthe plot synopsis of the 2018 GoW. But damn Ragnarok was a masterpiece.
To see God of War from what it used to be, which was Kratos going around obliterating things and banging chicks, to what it is now is nothing short of masterful. It's like finally growing out of your middle-schooler phase. Yes, I understand that God of War was always a deep story. I'm just saying that everything else about the franchise finally caught up to it.
Biggest issue with the new games is the camera. I'm not a fan of a close up camera with multiple enemies attacking you with little hit markers telling you you're getting attacked from the side/behind EXCEPT you don't know what type of attack it is (normal/unblockable).
@@psychosemantics Huh, a bit assbackwards to use the same colour schemes. Specially since there's no quick turn like in 2018. Oh well, at least that didn't impact me as much compared to the constant tip bombardment.
@@psychosemantics Funny that you mention the camera because I was under the impression that the developers took inspiration from the movie Birdman, where it's edited to seem like a one shot film. I think it's a bold move of a video game to do that, since I do like the one shot style of filming.
@@Destilight actually they're is quick turn, you only have to hold the shield up and press down on the d pad. They change it because of the new wapon you get.
I wonder what difficulty Garnt played it on. To anyone playing on GMGOW, there is no reward for completing it unlike its predecessor. Not even after 100% it...
I don’t know, the ending felt super rushed and they set up a lot of stuff with no payoff or just forgotten at the end. Everything up until the ragnarok starts was good.
@@pliskin5161 No i know alot of Norse mythology since i had it as a class back throught most of elementary school here in Denmark, but im not even talking about the change to the mythology (which there are many). @Shadowwall He literally used one to get Odin's soul inside LITERALLY A BIG MAJOR PLOT point of the game you missed or forgot about, also he said he is going on a journey to explore the future of the giants, another major plot point you missed entirely...
I looooovved both god of wars. (2018 and Ragnarok) my only complaints is that for 2018 there wasn’t as much gameplay variation, and for ragnarok I didn’t love the ending, and felt like it could’ve been better.
Why do I get the feeling that Connor’s “old game” was referring to all the old god of war including the Greeks. While Garnt was only talking about GoW 2018
then try it rather than feeling negative about it. if a good number of people agreed the game is better than 2018 gow. then that’s saying a lot. specially from highly skeptic people like charlie moist kritikal
I think if you want a story you absolutely want to do GoWR cause Elden Ring is more like lore game that you need to read 17 different scrolls/notes to understand something that happened before the game

Ragnarok may not be the best game Ive ever played, but it's arguably the best sequel I've ever played. In how it both builds on the first one from a gameplay and a narrative standpoint. Sure it has it's pacing issues, mostly from the inevitable swap from a 3 game arc to a 2 game arc. But I dont see that as a bad thing, what we lost from a narrative standpoint, I think we gained from unnecessarily extending this game into 3 games when it definitely didnt need for that to happen. Also we get a new mythology a whole game earlier.
I don’t like the new god of war games. I miss the feel of the OG games. Sony’s first party single player games all feel the same to me. Last of us, uncharted, and now god of war all have the same feel. Like games on rails.
I'm kinda in the middle cos, I like cool cinematics and a good story but, also like good gameplay, that's why Devil May Cry 5 > God of War 2018 imo. Devil May Cry 6 will probably do the same to Ragnarok but, that's only if they make it. While God of War is ashamed of it's roots (gameplay, story, etc from the old games) DMC5 embraces it's roots and improves upon them. It even borrowed some mechanics from the 2013 reboot.
I just realized hearing Connor not have the heart or time to play GOW 2018 is probably exactly how One Piece fans feel everytime I say the exact same arguments about not starting it.
I’ve never completed FF6. I’ve played through it multiple times, completed every side mission, etc. but I refuse to actually climb the tower and kill Kefka, because I love the game too much
So many people come out of the woodwork and claim that God of War is deep and mature now. Yes, the greek saga was over the top, but so were the greek myths. The greek saga was a modern myth of it's own. It has deep themes, and just because Kratos yelled Zoos! a lot, doesn't mean that they were immature or shallow games.

Not wanting to play God of War 2018 to play Ragnarok is insane. That’s like wanting to watch The Two Towers without watching The Fellowship of the Ring.
Indeed
Agreed, why go into the middle of a story?
Elden Ring being my new favorit game of all time and GOW Ragnarok hitting my top 5 favorit games. What an awesome year :)
I felt the same way after beating the game three weeks after release, on GMGOW mode. Definitely cried a few times and it builds on the story so good.
I have to say that I could see GoW making Connor care about story, however as soon as a certain mission starts there's a high chance he loses his new found appreciation again.
Not even God of War can save him.
which mission?
@@frostyllusion4391 I'm guessing Ironwood.
@@frostyllusion4391 the Ironwood mission.
I personally have no problem with it, but I can absolutely see people, especially Connor, getting bored by it, as it is quite long and Atreus playstyle is more limiting.
I doubt it, GOW 2018 brings back some of the worst aspects of 7th gen gaming when it comes to interrupting gameplay with story.
Connor needs to play through all the God of war games. From the OG to ragnarok.
I have a feeling Connors gonna hate 2018 and ragnarok gow just cause it has a lot of forced walking cutscenes
I don’t know. He has gone on record as saying that he’s not a huge fan of narrative-heavy games. Even though the gameplay itself is pretty good, he might be turned off by all the cutscenes and long periods of just walking around.
The rarest game ever have top tier quality storyline cutscenes gameplay music characters etc ….. love it so much
Yeah maybe you should play more games.
@@tomgu2285 yeah maybe god of war made many of it's peers boring play
I feel Garnt about beating the game cause I did like a week ago and just haven't felt like playing anything else
Tales of Symphonia was the only game I’ve ever 100 percented & I made an audible “NICE!” at work hearing you Garnt mention it
I just got done playing all the God of War games for the first time and started Ragnarok last night.
Garnt's best take to date
Let me break down what truly consists of the souls-like formula:
Another key factor is the dialogue when travelling can play a huge part on the story.
If we are being honest here yes elden ring is super duper dope but i somehow always felt empty especially if ur plsying it 4 to 5 hours
Nice shout out to Tales of Symphonia first game I think I 100% as well, it was definitely in a class of its own, easily the best RPG on the GameCube
Hollow Knight is quite literally a work of art
one of the best games of all time, a rollercoaster of emotions.
(Also could mean I'm better at the game now than I was as at 19 tho lol)
oh, my poor child, you will know what he means later on
It’s hard for all the wrong reasons I’m convinced this game wasn’t play tested properly at higher difficulties
Couldn't relate more with Garnt here
My only complaint was that they should've split it into 2 parts, or at least made the game longer if this was going to be the final game in this set.
I don’t think anyone cares to see that 🤣 it’s on to china or Egypt now 😎
When you’ve played 10 games in your life
God of war 4 was a fantastic soft reboot/ continuation of the original God of war games story gameplay takes a bit to get going in 4 but once it gets going it goes hard
Ragnarok takes that and Jacks it up to 11 and imo deserves game of the year
Cummer will love these games, I am sure. I just finished 2018 and boy, what a game. I'm hype for Ragnarok to come to PC.
Personally I like the Old God of War more then Ragnarok.
@@TheAquilaSamurai You can change it in the accessibility settings, I just never did it cuz I didn’t mind it.
I personally hated all the puzzles so I welcome the hints
@@givenofuckz2313 Imagine having to think for half a second. Pathetic.
Elden ring lore is like a novel, you need to read the item description, some writings in some paper or walls. GoW lore is like a movie, you see the emotion on the character's face
It's weird knowing that they play God Of War as well.
“They”? Garnt played it.
I honestly can’t imagine Joey or Connor playing through GoW to be frank.
The complaint about this game that I hate seeing the most is that it's a "Movie" because not every single game has to have a non linear story. There is nothing wrong with it having a lot of cutscenes because it still has fun gameplay
Bro I need Connor to stream his gameplay of both games, I really wanna see his reaction 💀
Oversimplified version of the story makes it sound like John Wick like story
The story is quite easy to understand and it will immerse mind body and soul.
Connor will hit SKIP whenever he can though..
That would be jarring, but if he sits through the Baldur fight at the beginning, he’ll be hooked.
damn. First time I agree with Garnt with something wholeheartedly lol
I love story driven game as well. The witcher 3 was my favorite game of all time because of the story.
I finished it two days ago it was awesome 😎
Same here completed God of War Ragnarok with 100% platinum two days ago. Still taking it all in, watching the behind the scenes and spoilercast how this game was produced.
@@ninongfons I haven't platinumed it yet
It just take 2 days to complete it? Well it's just a gamified movie, so I guess that's kinda expected.
@@youarecorrectandiamwrong.8646 he said "two days ago" not finished it in two days... but you're probably an Elden Stans so i don't expect much from you
@@youarecorrectandiamwrong.8646 "2 days ago" isn't "completed in 2 days". Learn how to comprehend a text then maybe you can form opinions.
Doesn't the arrow glow yellow for blockable and red for unblockable? Or at least that's what i assumed
@@Destilight Nope, yellow for someone getting ready and red for when the attack is coming.
@@psychosemantics Huh, a bit assbackwards to use the same colour schemes. Specially since there's no quick turn like in 2018.
Oh well, at least that didn't impact me as much compared to the constant tip bombardment.
@@psychosemantics
Funny that you mention the camera because I was under the impression that the developers took inspiration from the movie Birdman, where it's edited to seem like a one shot film.
I think it's a bold move of a video game to do that, since I do like the one shot style of filming.
@@Destilight actually they're is quick turn, you only have to hold the shield up and press down on the d pad. They change it because of the new wapon you get.
It's like when Joey and Connor slept on Mushuko Tensei
I wonder what difficulty Garnt played it on. To anyone playing on GMGOW, there is no reward for completing it unlike its predecessor. Not even after 100% it...
This makes me feel like Connor and Garnt should fuse with each other, which would make them the perfect gamer
Man everytime i hear Gigguk speak, i feel like he's renting a room in my brain.
New GoW is fire, but the narrative about it being more mature than old ones is sickening... Good to see you guys not thinking about it this way.
I really like Red Kratos and Kratos Of Red. The final Grail War was dope.
I don’t know, the ending felt super rushed and they set up a lot of stuff with no payoff or just forgotten at the end. Everything up until the ragnarok starts was good.
Yeah, the "war" felt like a joke
Every arc the story represented had a end you just don’t know anything about Norse mythology to see that, not the games fault.
@@pliskin5161 No i know alot of Norse mythology since i had it as a class back throught most of elementary school here in Denmark, but im not even talking about the change to the mythology (which there are many). Like they used hours and a whole journey to setup Atreus getting the sack with the giant souls in it, but when never use them for anything for the battle of ragnarok like they almost forgot about it. Where did that arc end at ? Are the souls just going to sit in his pocket forever now ?
@@pliskin5161 not gonna lie, as a person that absolutely loved the game, your statement is so ridiculous that it made me angry xD
@Shadowwall He literally used one to get Odin's soul inside LITERALLY A BIG MAJOR PLOT point of the game you missed or forgot about, also he said he is going on a journey to explore the future of the giants, another major plot point you missed entirely...
There is not much difference to the first one. Both top tier Games.
I never heard of a man complaining about playing god of war 4 until coming across this video. Wow
I think connor can just start from God of war 2018 if he doesnt feel like playing the old ones
love connor bringing up elden ring
13 Sentinels was SOOOO GOOD, ofc i also googled on what order to play the chapters and "timeline", But yes IT WAS SOOOOOOOO Good.
I see 13 Sentinels enjoyer and i salute to you
I looooovved both god of wars. (2018 and Ragnarok) my only complaints is that for 2018 there wasn’t as much gameplay variation, and for ragnarok I didn’t love the ending, and felt like it could’ve been better.
10:25 [nervous Destiny noises]
Why do I get the feeling that Connor’s “old game” was referring to all the old god of war including the Greeks. While Garnt was only talking about GoW 2018
Garnt of War: NonaCrust
I like his opinion personally, i really hope Connor plays it
Haven't played Ragnarok yet but I can't imagine being that much better than 2018 and the idea of slogging through Atreus' parts fills me with dread.
then try it rather than feeling negative about it. if a good number of people agreed the game is better than 2018 gow. then that’s saying a lot. specially from highly skeptic people like charlie moist kritikal
@@renespinosa2845 I know it's better than 2018 but I don't think it can be that much better. I'll probably wait for the PC release anyways.
"if the game requires you to study outside the game its failed" so...Elden Ring, Connor? lol
I think if you want a story you absolutely want to do GoWR cause Elden Ring is more like lore game that you need to read 17 different scrolls/notes to understand something that happened before the game
I would love to see Connor play god of war
i have a lot of friends that are just like connor. really competitive guys but single player amazing games just doesn't interest them. they don't want anything with plotlines and stories in it.

When he's saying the old ones, i thought he was talking about the OG trilogy
Wait, Connor has a PS5? Bruh Play Demons Souls remake or Bloodborne
Souls games are made for Connor.

Would love to see Connor stream GoW Ragnarok.
This is my first official PS5 game and the first game I've platinumed
After fighting the God Skin Duo in Farum Azula, I now have a successful business, after failing so many times, I got back up now look where I am.
It even borrowed some mechanics from the 2013 reboot.
connor better plays the old god of war games now
Connor skips all the cutscenes anyways 😢
I just realized hearing Connor not have the heart or time to play GOW 2018 is probably exactly how One Piece fans feel everytime I say the exact same arguments about not starting it.
You don't have to play the old one to play the new one. You just play the old one. Then you will automatically want to play the new one.
I'm with Garnt with the storyline payoff. It's the best kind of reward.
Says I you have to research plot outside of the game then the story fails Elden Ring is in that category for me 100%
feel like garnt should give kingdom hearts a try for its complicated story and refined combat
Now Garnt really needs to play Yakuza 0
I'm gonna wait until a sale to play the game, because I've got other games right now like 100% Elden Ring.
