I once heard someone say "You will never be successful if you resent successful people". I read Stoic books almost every day and have adopted Stoicism as my philosophy of life. Your channel is such a great addition to my study of Stoicism. Thank you so much for producing it.

I'm on my second read-through of the Gregory Hayes translation of the book, which is incredibly accessible. If you get any version, based on some of the other random paragraphs I've read online that are clearly from other translations, I'd strongly suggest getting the Gregory Hayes version. It has a beautiful modern cover, and he includes a long introduction that provides valuable backstory to the writing of the Meditations, as well as Marcus' life.
I enjoyed this video, but I wish you had delved into some of the other themes of Marcus' writings, namely the briefness of life and the naturalness of death as just being another change that humans have to go through. In truth, while Marcus regurgitates the same ideas AGAIN AND AGAIN in this book, I think it's a method that works, as it makes sure you get what he's talking about. I still think he comes off as a bit cynical at times, especially as his ideas pertain to the nature of most people, but overall, I find his ideas about focusing on what you can control - your thoughts, your words, your actions - highly liberating.

I was listening to Meditations by Marcus Aurelius on audiobook whilst working on a house in Whistler. I was up a ladder two stories high and the ladder collapsed. I was all alone but was so relaxed that I survived the fall. I managed to untangle myself from the ladder dragged myself up a flight of stairs and into a bath where I lay in cold water for a few hours. 3 days later I was fine. It taught me that you can't change the nature of people but you can changed your attitude towards them. Shit happens. When it does you just have to deal with it. It doesn't help with ladder safety though.

PRO TIP: Watch these videos on 1.5 speed. It makes it easier to process everything because more information can get stored in your temporary memory and you save time.
Also try listening to your audio books on 1.5 or 2 speed depending on how fast the speaker talks.

If you can understand Marcus Aurelius at 1.5 speed you are a wiser man than I. I must admit I cannot understand anything when read aloud once. I must listen to it multiple times, or better yet read it, carefully, more than once.
Marcus Aurelius himself advises reading carefully in fact.
And my days of studying literature at school are brought to mind, in that we would read a text a bit at a time, copy certain bits out, write about them, compare them, discuss them, and even after that you might reread a certain passage when all of a sudden another interpretation appears to you.
Whether or not any of this leads to the correct interpretation I do not know, and perhaps it is correct that the first and quickest reading will give you the most accurate interpretation by allowing your subconscious to do the work. I distrust my subconscious though, it wants me to do all kinds of things that I shouldn’t, after all.

Hi. I would just like to share to everyone my joy of having watched this video. I only recently became interested in educating myself about philosophy. I think there was always some kind of philosoper in me but never had the opportunity to actually read and expound upon it. I feel like by being enlightened with this kind of knowledge, I am much more complete as a man and much more purposeful than ever. Im not eloquent as I would like to be, but with more time and effort put into this kind of learning, I hope I would become better in expressing myself more concisely and efficiently. For Humanity!

Thank you for making the video, very basic and straight to the point and very helpful for one trying to understand Stoicism. The Rent increase analogy is a great real world example.
I just got done listening to the audiobook of Meditations by M. Aurelius and it was pretty amazing at how deep it is.....but at same time so simple, so logical...so EASY....
Focus on yourself, don't be nosey, judgmental and into drama.
Only care about disappointing YOURSELF not others....(the beauty of this is.....you wont disappoint others because you will always strive to be your best self....kind, loving, sacrificing, humble and charitable....therefore if someone is disappointed, or mad at you when you were only trying your best......you really shouldn't care)
Expect life to change, expect many people to be shitty and a few to be awesome, expect people to always want to get ahead and succeed....even at your expense....mostl likely you would do same thing if your trying to succeed right?
And....I couldn't help noticing similar parallels to the more esoteric and gnostic orientations of the teachings and lessons of Jesus and some of the Easter Philosophy's.....a lot of his teachings just said from and explained from a different angle or viewpoint....but a lot that's very similar.
"let no man judge lest ye be judged himself"
"Let the man who hath not sinned cast the first stone"...etc.... And the point of "always value your time right now...today, in this moment....cherish the PRESENT moment, because you could die tonight and not have another day to experience" - This is basically the Hindu / Buddhist - "mindfulness" principal.
I think that I have been on a path of being a Stoic without even quite realizing it for some time now.......
Thanks again, best of luck to you man.
    -Dave.
