So compressing the springs is not needed apparently...I have a 2000 Ranger 2.5L and planning to do the same! Thanks for the video.

I find if you jack up the front end of a few feet remove the front tire you can put vice grips to hold the very top of shock to stop from spinning and stick a open end wrench to remove the nut make sure you spray all nuts and bolts with penetrating oil.

Just the video I needed to see. Unfortunately I had to do the same. I had to actually burn through my boot I'm not going to reuse it. Put a couple holes in the top plate so I can stick a screwdriver in there, so as it turned it had something to catch on, I guess it was so rusted that it ended up breaking the thread anyways, saved me a lot of unscrewing. 😂

Can you do this with just a jack? No lift

Any way to get the top nut off without snapping it or using a sawzaw? Hoping to re use the shocks but the top nut is super stuck and the shaft is just spinning like yours was.

You could try some penetrating oil, but a lot of times they are a pain to remove.

@@HomeOwnerRepair yeah I tried using a torch to heat it up after I tried some pb blast and let it soak. Neither worked so I just used a deep socket and a breaker bar to snap it off. It was all basically fused together so I just bit the bullet and got new shocks. Not even going to waste the time or fuel on the other one and just snap it off right away tomorrow. Thank you for replying though!

You say, "This is an easy do-it-yourself repair that can be performed with simple hand tools." Do you think we all own an air compressor, impact wrench and sawsall? Those are expensive power tools and an air compressor is very expensive. I am not going to buy power tools or an air compressor. My 2 wheel drive 2003 Ford Ranger Edge has torsion bars not coil springs. So you video was of no help to me.

John, You do not need an air compressor or impact gun to do this job. It can all be done with simple hand tools.

If you don't have air/power tools you use a ratchet and a hacksaw. If you can't figure that out you probably shouldn't be working on a vehicle in the first place.

You should probably have those things handy if you're driving a truck ... but I get that you can't always afford those things in a pinch. Check out Facebook marketplace if you or someone you know has one n

You own a truck but no power tools? You own the truck for looks?
