My friend had a 2002 Maxima with the 6 speed manual and helical lsd and it was a real sleeper sedan. He'd autocross a few times and it was a blast to drive. Nissan needs to go back it's true sports sedan roots.
They need to euthanize the Maxima. I had a 4th Gen with a full VQ35DE swap, pretty good little sleeper car. But, I am now a RWD/AWD guy and own a Q60 these days. After the 2003 Maxima none have been very good, partly due to that CVT. I would consider a Maxima if it went back to being RWD. You need to measure your desire for more power against what a FWD can't do: traction. I have a "Nissan" rule: If it isn't a RWD-based chassis with a "normal" transmission then it is Nissan garbage. Frontier, Titan, Armada, QX80, Q50, Q60 and 370z are the only decent Nissans these days, mainly because they stick to a "tried and true" formula.
John Frantz I used to use my Nismo Frontier for towing and slight off roaring. It had a fully boxed frame and standard Dana 44 axle. I sold it with over 100k miles with no issues. Definitely over built.
Yes sir I agree I owned a gen 2 and gen 3 taco and the gen 3 was so weak I was really disappointed. I now own a titan and would like a smaller truck again. I’m really gonna look hard at these frontiers.
Love the 4.0L in my Pathfinder. Great engine. Burns a little oil so you have to keep an eye on it every 2-3k miles if you do syn extended intervals. My only complaint...and it's not really a complaint.
I probably would pick this new truck if I had a need for a long term medium purpose duty truck. I loved my 86.5 SE V6 5 Speed 4x4 single cab Hardbody. Bullet proof engine. Gears.. everything was superb. Went everywhere Jeeps went.(and kept going while they were in the shop for repairs. ;) )
One nice thing about later Frontier V6 engines was the elimination of the timing belt. Forgetting the timing belt was about the only thing that would kill a VG-series engine. Nobody in my family knew what a timing belt was until 1994, when it failed on mom's 1985 Nissan Maxima.
Nissan's new 9-speed automatic transmission is designed by Mercedes-Benz and it's the same 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. Thanks. www.alliance-2022.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/89933.pdf
Not overly excited about the new engine and transmission combo. I had several Nissans over the years. The last one was a 2005 Xterra 4x4 with the 4L engine with an A/T. To this day, I’ve not owned a better setup. That vehicle was incredible fast, and the transmission was always in the right gear or would downshift as quick as the hammer dropped. I wish Nissan would bring back the Xterra. I’d buy one tomorrow. And I’d rather have the proven reliability of the previous power plant.
I agree on keeping the 4.0. Toyota and nissan had it right. 4.0 is perfect for a midsized truck. Toyota screwed up bad though by putting that under powered camry 3.5 engine in their tacoma and actually lost torque. Atleast nissan only went down by .2 liters and kept the same 281 torque but added 50hp. However I do have to disagree with you on the transmission. It may have been reliable but having only 4 gears was terrible for mpg and low speed power. With 9 gears it will have the best of both worlds, short gears for off the line power and low rpm at highway speeds for good mpg.
@@sergeysmelnik I'm pretty sure they had 5 speed automatics only for the gen 2 xterras. The 4 speed in the 1st gen made it a gas guzzler from what i understand. Happy with my 1st gen 5 speed manual.

TheGuruStud not sure what transmission you’re referring to as junk, but I’ve had plenty of 5-7 speed Mercedes transmission vehicles and they’ve gone well over 200k+ with no fluid changes.

After all these years, Frontier news! Feels surreal. I like it, work the bugs out of the new 3.8 and 9spd in the 2020 model, so when the new 2021 hits it should be fully sorted out.
Maybe since they already have a reliable manual transmission they will start dropping them in the new 2021 frontiers. I also agree on working the bugs out that way the new one will be a success and not have problems from the start.

For those of us that have older frontiers and are considering engine swaps, now we’ll have 2 great options: the Vk56 or this new 3.8. Really great news!
Guy: I have a million miles on my frontier and is still running strong! Nissan: let take away what makes it reliable and make it easier to break down so they'll keep buying!!
Lower the quality of the car too much, and people will buy from another manufacturer. That is why many people in the USA stopped buying from the big 3, and bought huge numbers of Datsuns and Toyotas in the late 70s and early 80s. The Ford Pinto, Chevrolet Chevette, and Chrysler K-car probably did more to sell Hondas and Datsuns than any advertising campaign that Toyota and Datsun ever came up with.
Honestly I’m fine with them not bringing a new truck. Hopefully the engine will be reliable and the new transmission. I like the looks of the frontier as it is
Atleast they didnt go with a 3.5 like tacoma. That thing is gutless at low rpm. I do wish nissan kept the 4.0. They could have easily squeezed more torque out of it. We also gotta see what rpm peak torque is cause if its higher than the current 4k then this isnt gonna be an upgrade in power unless its driven near red line. Anyway its still better than the earlier rumor that said the frontier is gonna get a 3.5. Even the colorado has only a 3.6. Also wish they kept the 6 speed manual.
This is why I love Nissan/Infiniti. They always find a way to put performance and high Horsepower in there vehicles. Owned 5 Nissans and One Infiniti and they never let me down. My 12 Frontier was the 4.o sport model and it hustled.

Sometimes turbocharged engines are beefed up to handle the boost. They get things like forged internals. That is why you can easily destroy an engine by just adding turbos and turning up the boost.
I saw the video you guys did about the million mile frontier. I really hope they give that guy a new frontier for free. That’s a huge bragging point for Nissan about how reliable and durable their trucks are.
I had a 2007 Frontier I bought new, 4cyl, 5speed manual that was trouble free for 230K miles, traded it in for the 2017 Frontier I have now, went w/a V6 & auto this time around, no issues at 45K miles so far. Great dependable trucks.
Ahh i live in Australia i love my nissan too its a 2.5L turbo diesel has low range transfer case and is manual, its a crew cab same build running gear as yours mate.
I bought a used 2015 Nissan King Cab 4 cyl automatic with less than 40,000 miles last year and added a nice color coordinated cap. If I could have gotten my hands on the manual shift I would have liked that because most of my previous trucks were manual shift. I am almost tempted to order this 2020 Nissan because it is going to be the last Frontier with the current design that I really like. The hard plastic inside doesn't bother me one bit because it is a truck. I have owned a Nissans/Datsuns since 1970 (2 510s- one a wagon, 1 Stanza, 2 Altimas, 1 Versa with 180,000 miles - still going strong and 2 Frontiers). The first Frontier was my wifes and she loved it but I got rid of it after putting over 200,000 miles on it. She still reminds me that we should have kept it. Oh well.
I assume it would fit however it would have to be used with the same 6-speed as the baby duramax (due to how much power it has), bring a trans from the half ton with it, beef up the 8 speed the V6 uses, or as a fantasy option use a ZF 8HP trans variant which is apparently pretty awesome based on Engineering Explained’s video about it. Presumably its also no heavier than the diesel or V6 so it ought to have good fuel economy. It would be a monster though. Definitely a Raptor level truck with 310hp and 348lb-ft @1500-4000RPM.
@@Iconic_Scarab it would be a pretty incredible package. No doubt in my mind. Roughly the horsepower of the 3.6 v-6, but with torque that is closer to the baby Duramax. That would be a lively truck.
I'm on my third Gen 3 Frontier King Cab 4x4. I really like the styling of the current generation and hope Nissan will change their mind and offer the 2020 King Cab in the Pro4x trim.
That new 9 speed automatic I know allot of people want the manual to stay but just get a 2019 it’s not a big deal I’m glad they’re bringing more gears, will help with gas mileage and 300+ horsepower? That is really nice.
Agree, that's definitely relevant info. I don't think they've been published yet though, at least not by any of the other sources I've quickly looked at.
Watch . The frontier and pathfinder have always had “the corporate “ V6 . Watch this 3.8 be in the pathfinder and maxima . And if they put that 9 speed in a maxima with a new v6 😍😍
The Maxima is a transverse engine FWD car, so it will not get the 9 speed automatic. It will probably have a CVT. However, I think some variant of the 3.8 will be used in the Maxima. The 3.8 truck probably is made for 87 octane, and the Maxima might be made to either benefit from or require 91+ octane. If other Maximas are an indication, you can use 87 octane, but not have all the performance the engine can deliver.
It sounds like this is a V6 for the Titan as well. I think this is a brilliant move for Nissan, they are bringing new excitement to a truck that is old enough to drive its self around. Not to mention, this platform is way beyond paid for and profitable. This engine may not be all new, if they take the VK50VE 5.0L V8 shave off 2 cylinders you get 3,769.5 cc's. 293-315 hp based on the power figures of the V8, they may be able to massage a few extra hp out of it with some new tech and the VK is a stout platform. This is just a hunch though.
The new V6 has about the same power as the old 5.7 L 350 as that's very decent for a midsize truck. Don't care for the nine speed transmission in a midsize though.
Never understood the hate for nissan trucks in the truck world. my brother has a 2005 nismo frontier that has over 250k miles and all that I had to changed was a heater hose neck, ignition coils, sparkplugs, catalytic converter and radiator and this is with him not keeping up with the maintenance.
They probably will. No one has mentioned the Nissan NV2500 & 3500s. They also have the old 4.0 and will most likely get this new 3.8. I bought an NV high roof. At the time, the 4.0 and 5spd automatic combination were already 11 years old and had proved their reliability in Frontiers and Pathfinders. In 2016 when traded my '11 E-250 4.6 V8 for my 4.0 NV, I hadn't owned a V6 in years, but was surprised to see the v6 had 46hp more and kicked the crap out of my old Ford v8 in acceleration.
This is actually good news, little dates but it is still a great looking truck, I had an 07, I sold it at 300k miles. Still ran great I just needed better gas mileage at the time. I miss that truck.
I think Nissan is mistaken for discontinuing the 4-banger and the manual option. Gone are the days of a simple, small, basic pickup truck/work truck with a 4-cyl and a manual. The Frontier was basically the last option like that. Also, I'm hoping the new Frontier doesn't bloat up in size too much like the other "compact" pickup trucks. The current model is like the perfect size. As a comment below suggests, just a minor cosmetic upgrade to go along with the new powertrain would be perfect as to not increase the truck's price too much as it already has a very solid chassis/platform. But I'm hoping they bring back a 4-cyl or at least a turbo-4 in the new 2021 model.
Just give this person of the new Nissan Frontier He gave Nissan a one million truck which is good because people will want to buy a frontier instead of a Toyota Nissan should give this person the 1st Nissan Frontier new
The million mile truck guy probably won't accept it because it won't have a manual option or the 4 cylinder that he got it with (the manual transmission being the bigger issue).
So glad to see this today. My 2010 Pro-4x king cab 6spd has been really great. I'm already considering leasing a 2020 Pro-4x and either buying it out or trading it once I see what they have done with the new 2021! I hope the missing value options are only temporary for 2020. At the very least Nissan should consider keeping a 6spd manual available with the Pro-4x package.
I have a feeling that if the price doesnt go up a whole lot, the 2021 frontier is going to be one of the best trucks to buy. Id love to own one of these new Nissan trucks, the titan looks great. A smaller version will probably also look great.
These CEO‘s just don’t listen well enough on what the customers needs, almost always. Line up and success could be so easy. Instead Nissan sales down the tube and no bonus for the CEO at least.

The maxima with a true 8 speed ZF would womp on a Accord and Camry. Im a Honda guy too

Yes, especially in Europe, when they are regarded as terrible shit.
John Frantz I used to use my Nismo Frontier for towing and slight off roaring. It had a fully boxed frame and standard Dana 44 axle. I sold it with over 100k miles with no issues. Definitely over built.
If you have a 2009 you'll still feel like your truck is relevant 😂

Got a 2012, and I've loved it through all these years
Sounds like a great refresh! Hope it works out. I’ve leased multiple Frontiers and love them.
The frontiers old 4.0 made the truck faster than the Tacoma so this new engine should really make it move.
That 4.0 was a monster relatively, loved the one I had. Put your foot down and it's gone!
Yes sir I agree I owned a gen 2 and gen 3 taco and the gen 3 was so weak I was really disappointed. I now own a titan and would like a smaller truck again. I’m really gonna look hard at these frontiers.
Anything is faster than the Tacoma.thing is a dog.
Zach I don’t need a race car just something that makes me excited when I hit the gas.
The transmission is actually the bigger story here. IMO.
Nissan's new 9-speed automatic transmission is designed by Mercedes-Benz and it's the same 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. Thanks.

Hell, I'd gladly take just the 9spd with my VQ40 in my 2007 Xterra
@@samaanam76 eww, when it breaks it will cost an arm and a leg
Finally getting rid of the 5 speed that’s not terrible but not great either.
Chris no prices will be cheaper all because it will be associated with Nissan
Dropping the 4 and the manual is a mistake
@William Vagabond They are selling more 4 bangers than all the V6 trucks because they ARE CHEAP!
They’re killing off the manual transmission . NOOOOOO

I also agree on working the bugs out that way the new one will be a success and not have problems from the start.

simple engine = poor gas mileage. I love manual trans but they're also a niche market now.
Antor Medrano they don’t have a choice it’s called CAFE standards. The EPA mandates these things. If they didn’t, we’d all still be driving some POS with engineering outta the 80’s... this 3.8l V6 makes more HP that any V8 offered in the entire 80’s decade, with twice the mileage.
They also make way more money off servicing this new tech than they would if they gave us NA 4 cyls w manual trans that would last forever
Bc nobody wants them
For those of us that have older frontiers and are considering engine swaps, now we’ll have 2 great options: the Vk56 or this new 3.8.

I would love it if Nissan brought the Hardbody back. I loved the look of my 1990.

Oh well.

Time for GM to throw that 2.7L turbo 4cyl. from the Silverado into the Colorado/Canyon.
Personally, I think the Colorado/Canyon is the PERFECT home for that 2.7, and it's not even available. Makes sense...
@@ShyaMiss I cant figure why GM doesnt offer this engine. It would be class leading and then some.

Watch . The frontier and pathfinder have always had “the corporate “ V6 . Watch this 3.8 be in the pathfinder and maxima . And if they put that 9 speed in a maxima with a new v6 😍😍
Supa-Lu 92-thaWizard Well...they definitely need to get that CVT set up out of the Pathfinder.
Wow! Nissan is back, babe! An amazing comeback! The best car company right now. No doubt about it!
Said no one.

Do you think they will put this in the Titan?
They probably will. No one has mentioned the Nissan NV2500 & 3500s. They also have the old 4.0 and will most likely get this new 3.8. I bought an NV high roof. I would like to have a moment of silence for the manual transmission. 😭
