- *Note: Areca Catechu is the scientific name of the beetlenut tree. Dypsis lutescens is the name of the ornamental tree that looks like the Areca Catechu. Because of its similarity, Dypsis is called Areca palm.
So finally we are out with the Areca Palm Care video. This one took some time to come out with because of so many other things lined up. Very nice video. My plant was getting too bushy and taking up lot of space so I trimmed it so that it could be kept indoors. Now it has started sprouting new leaves! Very hardy plant.
Your presentation is very interesting and informative. One of the things you've said is wrong. The nut from this palm is not the same kind of the nut used in the so called mouth refreshing products. Though both of these palm-trees are similar. The palm that produces the areca nut used in such products need good sunlight and cannot really live long indoors!

A great video on areca palm. I have a confusion regarding the fruit of the areca palm. Although it is edible and tastes similar to areca nut, it is not the same as the betel nut, which is actually the nut that is consumed with paan. I mean areca catechu (betel nut/ areca nut plant) and Dypsis lutescens (areca palm tree) are two different plants. RIGHT???

Hi mam... Wonderful watching your video. Its been 3 years I have my areca plant but didn't understand it's caring. Nursery guy asked me to keep it in low sunlight and after doing it... All the leaves fell down leaving the roots. What should I do. Please suggest

Hi Ann ,just started watching the videos, very systematically presented information.my areca is having problems of water retention as the soil has clay from nursery and the stem was Browning from base till top, and easily plucked out.i am thinking of repotting ,but should I remove all the clay and dentangle the roots from the nursery clay soil ?
or should I just change the surrounding soil in pot and let the roots bulb ( along with clay) sit in the new surrounding.

Hello. After watching your videos, I have collected around 30 pots and plants and still adding. Now I am worried, as I live in north India, how would I protect them from extreme cold during winters, as the night temperature sometimes goes down to 3 degrees Celsius. Please suggest something so that I get prepared for this beforehand. Winters start from November onwards.

very helpful video..I just repotted it 2 weeks back so my robellini palm (pygmy date palm) has enough fertilizer and good soil. Its sitting in shade in my balcony. But now i see whiteness all under the leaves and in the center. Its more like scales. It feels rough..i can scratch it. And i also see threads growing at the base of fronds. Is my palm infested. Please help. I am a beginning and this is my first plant ..thanks so much.

Hi I am new to garding few days before I bought areca palm from nursery the soil was little sticky and brown in colour .is cocopit sticky and dark brown on colour
Mostly it will be claysoil. Claysoil will stick to your fingers. Cocopeat is like coconut husk powder, you can just dust it away and it won't stick.

Hello Ann. Leaves of my areca are crisping up. Not turning yellow or brown, just crisping and the whole stem dies. I'm watering twice a week as I suspected under watering. Can you please help?

If you use a meter at what reading should it be to show it needs watering?
It depends on the meter (reading type may differ) and the plant. Some plants need watering at the lower end of moist and some need at when dry. Meters usually will have three ranges, dry, moist & wet. Never water when it is wet for almost all plants.

My 4 year old healthy palm started showing dried leaves, lack of growth, infected by mileabuggs
My areca got badly burner in the summer and so I had to cut quite a lot of fronds back. New ones grew but they are not separating. They stick together in a clump. I tried separating them manually but it's impossible without tearing the fronds. How can I fix this? Thanks :)
