    Little advise for less clean up work is just spread out a big bed sheet and layer the palms on it so you can just wrap the sheets four edges and carry away. I do this when I trim lots of things. Helps a lot.

    If you live with a row of 200 of these palms in S. Fl. for a few years. You will understand why he trimmed this way. Add 10 or so coconut palms for good measure to test your sanity. And pocketbook.

    I think I have two of these in so cal. It's outside against wall in shade. the stalks are thin and I had to tie the whole thing up to keep from falling forward. I was gonna Sawzall them to the ground... your saying it will regrow? Then maybe I can keep jus a few sprouts ro grow thick. I p l antwd them originally so the wall would not get tagged. The king and foxtail are now growing taller so this mess is seen more. Your opinion FJB.

    Our Areca palm is way too tall, maybe 25 feet and isnt full at the bottom. Will the plant die if I cut off the large trunks? or will it sprout back?

    • @EatYourBackyard
      @EatYourBackyard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, cut back the large trunks, gotta do it, just give it the nutrients and water it needs to recover. You will find lots of folks saying this is crazy. I have done it to the clump in this video and several others in my yard and it always comes back strong. Please join me on the LIVE CHAT PREMIERE of my newest song "One Thousand Million". If you listen to it, flowers will grow out of your ears and your eyes will shine rainbows. At least, that's my prediction. Great videos. Just scarfed some seeds from my south neighbor and planning to wall off my north neighbor with an acrea wall. Seedlings just popped up, (thanks to your other video).
    Question:
    When I go to plant these in a few months, do I plant them as single palms spaced out or in small groups spaced out?
    Thanks again for all the info you give out.

    • @EatYourBackyard

    I am a new viewer of your videos. Very informative for a beginner. I have an overgrown Areca palm clump. 30 years plus. How do I cut down the massive trunk limbs. Several are hung up in power line. I'm guessing there are about 15 to 20 huge trunks. This is located on the side of my house. Used as border and privacy. This clump is inside of a decorative cement border like you have around your home. This clump is about 10 FT away from the front side of the house. I hope you can help me.

    What happens to the large stump clumps? If you keep cutting large poles for years to come do you end up with a massive amount of stump clumps? Those clumps create a wasted space. Or... do the stumps eventually decompose and then new ones grow in their place?

    • @EatYourBackyard
      @EatYourBackyard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eventually you need to trim down the stumped part of the root ball with a Sawz all. Yes, they do decompose. You just made me think, I should do another video on stump and clump and show what it looks like now. Thanks. I removed them all .. enormous root balls that had to be ground down professionally .. they did nothing but destroy my fence, harbor rats and ants .. they CANNOT contained aesthetically. In the end, they ended up costing me about $3000 in repairs and removal. I will never plant arecas again.

      Well I have one that is 30 years old right next to my deck, they are multitrunk and always growing new trunks, maybe the life of one trunk is 10 years, but there are dozens of new ones each year. Hi! I've got a Areca palm plant. I water it every 7-8 days. I live in Sweden so I have it indoors. Does the light from livingroom lights help the photosynhesis? And some of the tip of the leafs are brown and looks like it's dead or something.
    Does it mean that I have to fertilize it ASAP or should I cut the tips? :)

    • @callisto742
      @callisto742 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, areca palms need a lot of light. An indoor environment is not a suitable place for them. But you can place the plant in a sunny spot for 5 hours a day for three days a week and keep them indoors rest of the time. But I am in the tropics, and you might need to 'sun' your plant more that far north.

      Okay, now that is a really great question. Yes and no. They will look great and be VERY easy to grow (pros). However...When they start to drop seeds, it is a major hassle (about a million seeds). My point is, great pick, but only if you are willing to sign up to the trimming.

    • @EatYourBackyard
      @EatYourBackyard  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, my area is filled with Areca palms. I currently have 2 clumps in my yard. I used to have more. The clump in this video has been stumped by me about 3 times! They grow soooo fast. One year I filled 2 yard waste cans with nothing but seed pods from this one palm, they are the real deal.
