As the cargo director on the maiden voyage of the S.S. Buoyant, you’ve agreed to transport several tanks containing the last specimens of an endangered fish species to their new aquarium. Unfortunately, the boat is battered by a fierce storm, throwing your precious cargo overboard. Can you get the fish to safety and save the day? Steve Wyborney shows how.
Lesson by Steve Wyborney, animation by Artrake Studio.
- Hits storm.
- Loses the cargo.
- Rare fish species chance of going extinct by sharks.
- information for the quantity of fish tanks gets lost.
- Only enough fuel for 1 trip to the ocean floor.
- Sonar malfunctions.
- Poor informitive shipping notes.
- There is a timelimit to solve the problem.
- You have to do this all by yourself while It's still storming.

Guys i solved it on my own... My first.... But i used a different method... it's algebraic
.
.
Let total no of fishes in each aquarium be f...
Than 2+4f+4+2f+x+yf= 50
where x and y r the no of sharks and no of tanks respectively
.
(6+y)f=44-x
f=44-x/6+y
Now f can't be a fraction,it can only be a whole no
And
x+6≤7 and x can't be 2and 4, only possible values r 1,3,5 and 6
Subtracting by 1 and 3 gives us a prime no so impossible and by 6 gives us 38 as numerator which has to be divided by 6+y so y should be equal to 13 which is not possible.. leaving us only with 5
Substituting this value we can get
.
.
44-5/6+7=3
Hence no of fish in each tank = 3 and total tanks in sector gamma is 7 and shark=5
.
Ps:- I couldn't resist myself sharing my solution and it's also the first comment i wrote... hope it doesn't goes unnoticed.
I did the same thing!
I went through it the same way .... But got confused because of so many variables and possibilities.... I missed getting the point of the whole number
My methodology wasn't exactly the same but using your letter scheme I started with 50 = 6 + 6f + x + yf and then used the rules to see which values of f,x,y were allowed in the rules. Then I went through each remaining possible value for x after reading the rules (1,3,5,6,7) and plugged them in to that equation while moving the constants all over to one side of the =. We know there were 6 sharks in the first two sectors so 50 went down to 44, and then plugging in the possibilities for x, I found that a constant c would be equal to f*(6+y) and values of 1,3,7 for x made the constant c prime so it could not equal f*(6+y) which is a product of f and (6+y) so by definition it is not prime. This left x to be either 5 or 6 but if it is 6 we have the constant c equal to 38, whose only factor pairs are 1/38 and 2/19. By the rules of the problem, neither f or (6+y) could equal 19 or 38, so we see x cannot be 6. Taking x to be 5 we get 39=f*(6+y), and since the factor pairs of 39 are only 1/39 and 3/13, we can deduce that the only possible answer we can get within the rules is that f is 3 and (6+y) is 13 so y is 7. We can check this by plugging everything into the original equation so we get 50 = 6 + 6*(3) + 5 + (7)*(3) which is correct.
_um_ I’m confused.
That’s legit

And it's not like it's convoluted in interesting ways. It is convoluted for convolution's sake.
And It's not that you can't understand it, it's that you don't want to because it's not worth it. It is pointless, steals your time and bores you to tears.

This is more of a math problem than a riddle. I just guessed the number of sharks until all the conditions were met
I didn't think of something so simple as the number of fish in tanks divided by the number of thanks should be a natural number.I complicated this riddle so much.Firstly i made some math getting the equation and then playing with the minimum and maximum of that equation as well as the minimum and maximum of the sharks and number of tanks i got that the number of fishes inside a tank should be between 2 and 8,then I made a C++ program to verify the information and give me the number of sharks, number of tanks and number of fish inside a tank for every combination that gives the sum 50 and i got 5 results,2 of which had 2 sharks in sector gamma, other 2 had 4 sharks, but we know that there can't be the same number of sharks as in the other sector so only remaining result was correct:5 sharks and 7 tanks of fishes in sector gamma, each tank of fish having 3 fishes
Jesus dude
Yeah. I tried tanks with 5 fish blindly, adding up the first 2 sectors and seeing whats needed to reach 50 organisms in the last sector. They don't divide cleanly and you end up needing there to be 4 sharks in gamma when that's not possible. Same with 4 fish per tank, it needs 2 sharks in gamma to add up to 50. 2 fish per tank means too many tanks overall to fit 50, so it ends up being 3 fish per tank as a solution, mostly by elimination.
I guess a table works too but that seems more complicated somehow.
Can't it be both?

hymnson Cheung it's funny because the riddles are simple as fuck but I don't want to waste 10 minutes analyzying the possibilities to give them an answer
hymnson Cheung I
It seems a lot of people overcomplicated this. The first thing I did was 50-6 = 44, the value of the fish in the tanks and the sharks in gamma sector. Now all I had to do was find a number that multiplied with 7,8,9,10,11,12, or 13 equaled an odd number less than 44, or equaled 38 (since the value of the sharks in gamma sector must be odd, with the exception of 6 sharks). I know instinctively 8, 10, 12 cannot be odd, and 7*6=42, 11*4=44. That leaves 13*3=39, with 5 sharks, 13-6=7 tanks in gamma sector, and 3 fish per tank. It made more sense in my head, but yeah.

"Thermal imaging shows 50 organisms in the area". Sharks are cold blooded so their body temperature would be the same as the ocean water surrounding them. They would not show up on that scan.
thetwistedstrength but heat propagates slower through the sharks
Through that logic, neither would the fish.
MEG G Fair enough
ITS JUST A RIDDLE
Ok, paragraph long rant on biology incoming:
Cold blooded doesn't mean that the blood in the shark is as cold as the water around it. Cold & warm blooded refers to whether or not that animal's body can regulate its internal temperature on its own. Lizards, for example, need to sunbathe because without it, their bodies don't generate enough warmth to function properly. This doesn't mean that lizards are the same temperature as their surroundings- the process of chemical reactions producing the energy needed for the cold-blooded creature to survive does produce heat, just not enough to keep the temperature that said chemical reactions need to continue the way they should. That said, if you're sure the sharks are the same temperature as their surroundings and are still moving, then that sounds like a code B-movie: zombie sharks (not to be confused with code Bee Movie). In that case, I'm done. Forget the fish, forget biology, I'M DONE, AND I AM FREAKING LEAVING!
Not even gonna bother remembering the question after all that stuff thrown at me.

Pause screen should have the question. I was puzzled at first. I was like, what was I supposed to figure out?
That's why you use a godamnit table
i agree, they could have worded this video a bit better
The answer was much simplier than the work I've done to solve the riddle. The method I used, after organizing the possible number of tanks(13 or less), fish(5 or less), and sharks(1, 3 5, 6, or 7), was to go from the maximum possible combination and go down from there. Midway through 7 tanks and 5 fish, I discovered three points that help sped up the process.
1: Alpha and Beta values of fish/sharks are always the same for the certain Tank and Fish Combo
2: When there are less tanks, the of organisms in Gamma are lower compared to tanks+1, and the data doesn't repeat numbers(rarely atleast).
3. Because of the pattern, symmetry with any other number of tanks helps eliminate any future values. As discovered when I did 9 tanks with 4 fish(meaning A=18 and B=12, with the equation (S)harks+((T)anks×(F)ish)), and saw that the maximum number for Gamma was 19, which couldn't add up to 50 organisms, nor will it ever for future values with less tanks.
Finally I reached 13 Tanks and 3 Fish, with A=14 and B=10, and found that Gamma can possibly have 26 organisms(7 Tanks with 3 Fish, and 5 sharks), which would add up to 50. And too double check I did 12 tanks with 3 fish and discover the maximum value is 25, proving that 13 tanks with 3 fish was the maximum possibility, and giving me 7 Tanks in Gamma(Each with 3 Fish, plus 5 Sharks swimming around!)

I stopped watching this video just 50 seconds in so perhaps this might be one of the more rare riddles Ted ed makes but majority of their riddles are just ridiculous.
They're not really 'riddles,' per se. I suppose it's a fault on their side for calling them riddles, but it's just their way to make things more interesting as the so-called riddles are just ways to educate the viewer about different problem-solving methods. If you really don't like it, maybe you should try not to expect a proper riddle, so you won't be disappointed :))

"the sonar has malfunctioned"
*blows up*
I approached this problem, a little bit different. Because of the rule : each sector has different amount of sharks, I thought this way: if we subtract from 50 the amount of 🦈 it should result in a non-prime number, because if it's a prime number ( like 43 for example) we can't divide the amount of fish equally.
After we eliminate all possible prime numbers, we see that in sector Y there are 5 or 6 sharks. If it's 5 , then we have 39 fish and 38 for 6 sharks. From here it's easy to see that the only number which can be divided by (1-13) is 39 with 13 tanks. So 39/13 gives us 3 fish in each tank.
I'm so happy this is the first time i can solve the problem here without cheating hahahaha 😂😂😂😂 kinda proud and happy hehe

Im Aztify Basic my ass, there's a lot of variables in this
I ended up solving this one by basically creating a math formula, where x is the fish in each tank, y is the number of tanks in Gamma, and z is the number of sharks in gamma, so 6x + yx = 44 - z, and just kind of going from there.
If I'm ever transporting endangered fish through stormy, shark-infested waters I'll know exactly what to do. And they say algebra doesn't help in real life!
I got 7 tanks in gamma, 3 fish in each tank, 5 sharks in gamma. This is how I solved it:
I used this equation: 2 + 4x + 4 + 2x + S + xT = 50 where x = number of fish per tank, T = tanks in gamma, S = sharks, and 2 and 4 are the known sharks. Next I combined like terms: 6x + S + xT = 44. Then, I guessed and checked solving for the number of sharks. I found this combination using the second equation: 6(3) + S + (7)(3) = 44 --> 39 + S = 44 --> S = 5.
Put it all together: 2 + 4(3) + 4 + 2(3) + (5) + (7)(3) = 50.
Dan knickerbocker I gave up after the first sentence.
youre wrong
Dan got the same result as I did. Guess you didn't finish the whole video eh? I'm Asian by the way, you can trust my math solving skills. (Self-deprecating xD
Thanks Dan knickerbocker!
Clever to use an equation, but in the end guess and checking the result is essentially the same as using a table, which is faster and more organized
Thats today's leadership, the old captain pushing the responsibilities onto the cargo director because the captain can't manage his ship and sails it through shark infested stormy waters. You got us here captain help get us out!
that's true, if he knows that place too well, that he knows the numbers of sharks in each sector is different and they're between 1 and 7, WHY DID HE EVEN DRIVE THROUGH THIS PART
Actually, sharks are classified as fish so the answer should be 50
your pretty fun at parties huh?
*you're
NAhhh Sharks are Dolphins and Dolphins or fish.. so... YEAH
No, sharks are fish, whereas dolphins are mammals
Sizzzel
Every time I hear that phrase, I feel the urge to slowly poke a sharp object through my chest.
I don’t trust any submarines, anymore.
Any other nerd here actually do the math and get 7 tanks as your answer and then were super confused as to why the answer was three fish? Why you ask how many tanks do you need to find and then your answer is how many fish there are in each tank?!?
2:15 How many fish tanks in sector gamma?
So the answer is 7, but I suppose it's obvious once you know there are definitely 13 tanks.
Yep finally i solved a riddle.
took me about 20 min though, probably the fishs would dead by then.
Video: the entire species depends on u
Me: well, there's other fish in the sea
*badum Cha*
Woo! I solved this one! I didn't get this exactly how they showed it, but I basically got it. What I did was calculate the number of fish that were left with the number of sharks possible (50 - Sharks possible in other words) , and eliminating the prime number results (43, 41 and 37), leaving only 38 and 39. 39 is divisible by 13, but 38 was not divisible by any WHOLE number between 6 and 13, the minimum and maximum number of tanks respectively.
The first time I actually managed to solve one of these riddles
This is one of the easier riddles. A table isn't really needed. After realizing there are 1,3,5,6, or 7 sharks and subtracting them from 50, you can quickly filter out 43,41, and 37 because they are prime numbers. The two remaining 38,39 have easy prime factorization being 2x19 and 3x13 respectively. Obviously, it can't be 2x19. The key things to solving this is realizing the number of sharks possible and knowing that the fish have to be equally distributed.
ForteGX you actually don't have to know they are prime numbers, as long as you know that out of the remaining numbers one of them has to be divisible by at least 6 to 13.
43-cannot be divided by any number between 6 to 13.
41-cannot be divided by any number between 6 to 13.
38-can be divided by 2, but
2×6 (existing fish tanks)=12
2×7 (remaining fish tanks)=14
add to that the sharks you estimated (6)
and then the sharks we DO have (6)
12+14+12=38
so even with the highest value of tanks left we're missing organisms. False.
39-can be divided by 13 and 3.
3×6=18 (existing fish tanks)
remaining tanks are 7.
21(remaining fish)+5(remaining sharks)+6(actual sharks)+18(actual fish)=50
I'm not saying my way is easier, but it is a solution that doesn't need you to have knowledge of what a prime number does-ergo, it is a solution for younger children. (although the method I gave is pretty much identical to yours-but aren't all solving methods the same?)
Yea, hence why I simplified my solution to the realizing the number of sharks possible and applying that the fish have to be factorable. The prime numbers are just the quickest way for me to look at that. You do the same thing by saying 43 can't be divided by 6 to 13, but as a prime number that is obvious. Not as kid friendly, but maybe it would be worth teaching children about prime numbers =D
I mean compared to some other of the riddles that are posted on this channel, this is on the innocuous side. Its bark is definitely worse than its bite if you are willing to take out a pencil and paper. There aren't any tricks and it doesn't involve difficult reasoning. The explanation is just long winded to distract and discourage you.
ForteGX I followed the same line of logic with the elimination of primes. Also, this is simple enough that paper isn't required.
Please god tell me no one actually paused it and made a table...
Avi Michel I did pause the video. But all I made was some instant ramen before unpausing to get the answer
I made a table, not as complicated as the one on-screen though.
Paused it, didn't make a table though, I'm not that organized. You can solve it without one though, I just went and plugged in the numbers over and over again until I found one that fit and hoped for the best.
Yeah, the table makes it clearer and faster but you can just punch numbers into the equation until you get it.
I didn't make a table, I did some algebra on it and eliminated some possible numbers for sharks. If there are 6 sharks already accounted for, then we have 44 organisms left. Once we take out the sharks in sector gamma, the only remaining organisms are the fish, which are evenly distributed across the tanks. Any number of sharks resulting in a prime number of fish is therefore impossible. After that, it was just a few trials and errors.

*that doesn’t look like a malfunction*
Your graphic is a bit misleading. By labeling each column Tank 6, Tank 7, Tank 8 and so forth it looks like each column is an individual tank and not the possible total number of tanks. This whole section should just be labeled "Possible number of tanks" and then the head of each column have just one of the numbers from 6 - 13. Very good puzzle, by the way!!!
Finally solved a riddle myself, sadly I didn't use a table because I thought there would be too many details for one, so I just wrote out logic to find the solution. Now I see how taking the time to organize a table would have made it so much easier.
I solved it in my head, who needs a damn table
STILL MAKING IT GREAT AGAIN me
I did. I could probably do it in my head too, it just would take a little longer...
STILL MAKING IT GREAT AGAIN same lol 😂
The sad part is it would have been way easier with table I was just to dumb/lazy to do that lol
Same XD
Drawing the table takes unnecessary extra time, especially if pencil and paper aren't available (seems nothing works right on this vessel, so why expect the pencils to be sharpened?). The riddle is easily solvable in one's head:
1. Subtract the number of known sharks from the total number of organisms: 50-6=44
2. Subtract possible number of Gamma Sector sharks from 44 to "guess and check" for a number that can be evenly divided... 1 shark, 43 is prime; 3 sharks, 41 is prime; 5 sharks, 39 is a bingo.
3. Double-check your work with the time you saved not searching for pen and paper.
I'm gonna do something I've never done before
I'm going to pause this video and try to solve the riddle
(Hell yes I got it CORRECT) (using trial error)
(Edit) Solving this gave me confidence so I went ahead and solved 3 more TED Ed riddles correctly... I'm in love with these riddles.
OMG I SOLVED IT, IM SO HAPPY BECAUSE IVE NEVER SOLVED ANY OF THESE RIDDLES BEFORE ❤
Edit: I've never had this many likes before , THANKS SO MUCH ! And yes I didn't say the answer because I know people like to look in the comments so I didn't want to spoil anything
Catrina Tran SAME LOL
Lol you don't even say the answer
New Trader Because maybe she wants people to solve it themselves.
New Trader The answer is in the video. What extra proof would it give to comment the answer here? Also, spoilers.

This was actually really easy. I just used trial and error, until I figured out that there have to be 5 sharks, which leaves 39 fish. This is divisible by 13, for 3 in each.
Step 1: Confirm you have green eyes
Step 2: Tell the fish to come back
