Mustafa Ahmed You should check the Professor Layton video games. They are full with riddles like this one. They are for DS, 3DS, and mobile. It's as if they were made for the riddler in me haha.
The pilgrim can even save 4 silver for a big meal after visiting the temple. Simply instead of going three blocks south, go two block south (16), one west (14), one south (28), three east (34 instead of 36). Then as in the official solution: to the northern wall (4.25 instead of 4.5), one west (2.25), one south (4.5). Then to the eastern wall (-1.5 instead of -1), south (-12) and to the temple (-4).
I found a route that makes Duonia owe me money: I'll go 1 Down (8 silver), 2 Left (4), 2 Down (16), 4 Right (24), 3 Up (3), 1 Left (1), 1 Down (2), 1 Left (0), 1 Down (0), 1 Left (-2), 2 Down (-8), 3 Right, and you're at the destination with a net tax of -2 silver.
@@Graham226 How exactly? After 3rd step, I'm at the intersection of the leftmost vertical street and second from bottom horizontal street. I checked my route multiple times when I came up with it, there are no mistakes.
@@Graham226 I don't know what kind of spreadsheet you used but that is just overcomplicating things, this is a simple "draw a line on the grid" task that is best done with a pen and grid paper if you really want to confirm how my route goes. I start where the pilgrim is at the start of the problem, at the middle of the top street. You must have misunderstood my instructions in the original comment, because after the third step the pilgrim isn't even near the destination. She hasn't even gone to right once, which would be required to get there. After the fourth step she in turn is very close to the destination, just one street above it. If you still disagree, I can draw you a demonstration of how my route is supposed to look.
@@wombat4191 i tried that an hour ago, no matter what i do, i end up on the temple by the third step, i reach the corner and that is considered the destination

exactly what i just checked, it goes -12 and then + 8 = -4, they own u 4 silver, i was actually looking for a comment saying this cuz i thought i would be the first thinking about profting XD
Thank you for posting a riddle that actually keeps it within the rules given rather than being a "Technically you can" solution such as the wizard duel.
After watching till the end I still had troble to stop thinking about it, so I figured another way that even earns you money. You just go south two block insted of three, then west, south, east, than the same route as the other way you come to the temple with the city owing you 4 silver.
So inefficient. 1 loop of that is 4 walking units and earns you 1 silver. Instead bring enough silver to declare the northeast corner as your destination (which is at most 8 silver, assuming you live in the gate), then walk in a gigantic loop passing the gate, then the temple in that order over and over again. It takes 16 walking units, but earns you 127 silver, for a net of 16.9375 silver per walking unit, as opposed to 0.25. A 6675% increase in profit margins. Even if walking from 1 walking unit is 1 hour, it is still more efficient to go 2 blocks each, than 1 block. 8 walking units, assuming the space to fit it in, 16 gained on the downswing, and then a cost of 1 on the upswing, for a net of 15, or 1.875 per hour, a 650% increase, and I am not convinced it is 1 hour to walk that distance. Assuming that the pilgrim cannot sleep outside, and that she walked the entire day from the moment she walked up, 22 walking units were covered. At worst, that is a rate of 1.375 walking units per hour assuming a 16 hour walking day, but assuming an 8 hour walking day, that is 2.75, or 2 full loops, and a maximum of 3 walking units away from the northeast corner. Given a distance further than that, you might have to resort to a smaller loop on your second pass, but anything is more efficient than walking around a single block.
yep that's well known phenomenon on graphs: sometimes, if you consider edges with negative weight and there are loops in your graph, you might end up with a path that gives you arbitrarily large negative final values an algorithm that can be used to detect these loops is the Bellman-Ford algorithm, which can be implemented to profit on top of arbitrage
once the pilgrimage is done, actually yes, since that rule only applies during the pilgrimage - hit the temple, be done with it and get them riches and I guess Cee was meaning "you" in general, why hasn't someone showed up and broken the city yet?
I'd love to live there, I have them owe me 8 silver by doing the path he said, then I'd walk back to the entrance and owe an ASTOUNDING 0 silver, then I'd repeat over and over and I'd be rich in no time!
But, since I ain't no Pilgrim, I'd just walk around the block bottom right of the welcoming center six times, walk to the left (to where I'd have my house) and have the city owe me 20 silver, walk up, and repeat!
You can actually gain some silver by the time you reach the temple if instead of continuing downwards from the centermost intersection, you took a detour left 1 block, down 1 block, and continued along the path to the right 1 block. Your money would change over this path to these numbers: 4, 8, 16, 14, 28, 30, 32, 34, 17, 8.5, 4.25, 2.25, 4.5, 2.5, 0.5, -1.5, -3, -6, -12, -10, -8, -6, -4, leaving you with 4 silver owed to you by the end of the trip.
I would reckon that most of these riddles were made where the question was already known as well as the answer, and then it was wrapped up into a "scenario" as shown here so it could be nicely animated. So in that sense they could all be considered "contrived", unless they found a riddle and took it as is.
There is a way to end at 0 without owing decimal numbers (etc 2.5) on the way. Down - down - down Right - right Up - up Left - left - left - left Down Right Down Right Down Right - Right
The Pilgrimage ends once they arrive at the Temple, meaning they are no longer bound by the rules of said pilgrimage and are free to exit the city over previously walked ground. Or at least, I would assume so.
Thanks to your videos, reciting and doing patterns in the class I'm in so super easy! It kind of actually gives me a high grade. Keep up the good work!
Seems easy enough, though I must say, a city containing a major pilgrimage site putting this much strain on not just everyday travelers but also _the pilgrims,_ many of whom have apparently sworn vows of poverty or otherwise pack very light to avoid tempting bandits, would seem to be risking some serious international outrage.
All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost, The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring, Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.
Interesting. I found a more complicated alternative solution in which you go a bit more West before doing looping around. Still was able to cut enough corners that it ended with 0. I could’ve even ended with a profit at the temple if it wasn’t against the rules.
I interpreted this riddle differently but still solved it. I was under the impression that the pilgrim had to pass through the temple while still obeying the same movement rules and at the same time having to get back to the gate at the end. My solution was go down two blocks increasing the total to 16, then go left two blocks to drop the total to 12. Going down twice again brings the total to 48. Move right all four blocks to bring the total to 56. now move up three blocks bringing the total to 28, 14, and then 7. moving left all four blocks brings the total to -1 then go to the gate, the city owes you half a coin.
Check : Start with 0 silver Option 1 - 2 Left + 2 Down + 2 Right + 2 Down + 2 Right = - 4 Silver. Option 2 - 2 Left + 4 Down + 4 Right = - 8 Silver. Isn't this better options? You can get 4 or 8 silver with free visit too.
Being clever, the pilgrim realises they can make a lot of money out of this tax if they move the correct way after entering the city. They send a message to a pilgrim friend, together with a path to follow to maximize the gains. What is the most optimal way to travel from the entrance to the temple, and what does the city owe you afterwards? The best I have is 78, can you do better?
If you don’t understand 3:02 , (n x 2) + 2 over two is same as n x 2 over two plus two over two, or n over 1 (or n) + 1 x 2-2 ,1 and 2 cancel out and 2 becomes 1 , so we simplified it to n - 1
Well what I I break the rules of the pilgrimage. *scenery* Me: phew I’ve walked around the city 36 times and the city owes me a couple hundred dollars.
I can find better anwser. From the start(4): Go 2 left(0), 1 down(0), 4 right(8), 2 up(2), 1 left(0), 1 down(0), 2 left(-4), 3 down(-32) and finaly 3 left(-26). So, goverment have to give us 26 coins.
Libby Bollinger Good point, didn't catch that. Probably an oversight on their part, I think the intent was to have all information in one screen so you could pause it there.
Well that still means the town shouldn't be that big since they can't get outside assistance but that might just be me trying to put a hole on this riddle
Well, it doesn't matter because even if the tax applied to citizens they could always just follow what the pilgrim did and have the city end up owing them. People would abuse that and when the city cannot pay and abolishes the law, there would be rioting. Or they keep the law and end up in crippling debt. They can then borrow money from Germany and not pay it back.
The town is big because a businessman opened an inn at the spot where the city owes you money. People feel rich when they get there so they go in and spend their money freely. Then he uses the profits to build more businesses, growing the town. When the visitors leave the inn, they have to pay tax for the rest of their journey. Everybody wins, especially the pilgrims who can get into Heaven now that all their money is gone. "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."

The Pilgrimage ends once they arrive at the Temple, meaning they are no longer bound by the rules of said pilgrimage and are free to exit the city over previously walked ground. Or at least, I would assume so.
@@NocturneKitsune Hey, that means they can exploit the counterclockwise loophole afterwards.
don’t leave
Since I'm not a pilgrim, I would not have that weird rule. So my job would be to walk in counterclockwise loops.
For real, the Number Devil's a good book.
Yeah, we enjoyed it too, Lumos! Any other favorite math books?
I read the dutch version, a good book indeed.
That was my childhood.
John Meo Same here!!
Who here also watched Cyberchase when they were a kid? Lol
0:06 She's spreading cutiness and good vibes while she's walking

It was originally Tolkien's quote tho

Thanks to your videos, reciting and doing patterns in the class I'm in so super easy! It kind of actually gives me a high grade. Keep up the good work!
Me: throws away pilgrim rules
When I get to the temple after walking the same stretch of ground:
"Yeah, PAY ME."
So if you aren’t a pilgrim...
(Walks hundreds of times round block)
...then the city owes me 4287 silver
The way that final moral derived was superb!
After almost three years of watching these riddles this is the first one that I full solved. feels good :D
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost,
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring,
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
simply say you don't owe silver
i am genius
madhavi nowduru i am smarter. Just say THEY owe YOU $999,999,999,999,999,999,999. 🤯
Gabriela Martinez i am smartest. Look at the fourth rule.

Pilgrim walks counter clockwise and reaches temple and does not have to pay tax
Temple : Wait,that's illegal
And I thought calculus was hard
Why do I see you everywhere?
Help me get 10'000 subs for ad revenue Pls Cus he wants fame and attention duh
Justin Y. Oh god we met again
Help me get 10'000 subs for ad revenue Pls because we all see hallucinations. He can't be that much everywhere
Conspiracy theory: Justin Y. is a group tasked to conquer every TH-cam comment section before TH-cam's impending apocalypse.
Switch religions, then proceed to change it back once you arrive at the temple
*INFINITE IQ*
So Christians when you point out that all the self-centered rules they make aren't actually supported by the bible?
Yeah I thought the additional problem was to "also leave Duonia."
Does anyone else just watch these and never solve them?
Check :
Start with 0 silver
Option 1 - 2 Left + 2 Down + 2 Right + 2 Down + 2 Right = - 4 Silver.
Option 2 - 2 Left + 4 Down + 4 Right = - 8 Silver.
Isn't this better options? You can get 4 or 8 silver with free visit too.
You can’t start by going left, you can only go down or right
Wonder if there will ever be TED riddle I even try figuring out
"Not all those who wander are lost"-J.R.R.Tolkien. Love it .
This riddle is so smart. I really enjoy these riddles they always help me think!
If you’re not a pilgrim, make 1000 counter clockwise loops through the city XD
Edit: woah woah woah, 90+ likes?
K
Why only 1000? This is my job now.
Look at rule 4 idiots
You'd be better getting to a negative number and then going south as much as possible
I like how going on counter clockwise walks around the city earns you silver
1. confirm you have green eyes
2. ask the pilgrimage to leave
3. start walking
I love your videos I always like thinking about these riddles
Being clever, the pilgrim realises they can make a lot of money out of this tax if they move the correct way after entering the city. They send a message to a pilgrim friend, together with a path to follow to maximize the gains. What is the most optimal way to travel from the entrance to the temple, and what does the city owe you afterwards?
The best I have is 78, can you do better?
Étienne Massé this should have been the bonus riddle
I got 112
...because I drew a 6x6 street grid by mistake. My b.
Comes into gate: Your balance is 0.
Goes North.
The apocalypse ensues.
You can divide zero by something, you can't do the opposite though.
Capitalism did this to her
Capitalism gave her taxes huh?
She has no money because of her religion and the taxes were imposed by a monarchy, so how is the problem caused by capitalism
It's spelled socialism*
?
Hahhhha
If you don’t understand 3:02 , (n x 2) + 2 over two is same as n x 2 over two plus two over two, or n over 1 (or n) + 1 x 2-2 ,1 and 2 cancel out and 2 becomes 1 , so we simplified it to n - 1
My dad has been trying to solve this riddle for 14 years. And counting.
Did he solve it?
4:10
Why is the solution to these riddles always a swastika?
That's not a swastik... It's direction is opposite..
i think the opposite was a symbol of piece
What are you hiding TEDed
if i had a nickell for every ted ed riddle that consits of a 16 square grid, i'd have 2 nickles which isnt a lot but its weird that it happened twice
Well what I I break the rules of the pilgrimage.
*scenery*
Me: phew I’ve walked around the city 36 times and the city owes me a couple hundred dollars.
You know what? I'll just go back home.
OMG! I really LOVE this Ted-ed riddles!🥰
I love these quizzes!!! Please do more!!! :)
city: you can't get below 0 anywhere or we'd lose money
whoeveriam0iam14222 I found a way to get to the temple with -4 tax :P
I can find better anwser. From the start(4):
Go 2 left(0), 1 down(0), 4 right(8), 2 up(2), 1 left(0), 1 down(0), 2 left(-4), 3 down(-32) and finaly 3 left(-26). So, goverment have to give us 26 coins.
Иван Логинов you can't start with 2 left :/
The Physicist Cuber Yes, you are right.
As opposed to most other governments in debt?
This was a really cool one.
At 1:55 (after the rules) I wish you had repeated the 0:45 map screen to pause and calculate or something.
The map was there at 1:54, with all the rules as well (Y)
Yes and you can just rewind if you like that map better lol
Ivar Kråbøl nut you can’t see on the map where you’re going
Libby Bollinger Good point, didn't catch that. Probably an oversight on their part, I think the intent was to have all information in one screen so you could pause it there.
I really hope the pilgrimage rules end once you get to the end. Otherwise, how do you get home?
me jogging counter clockwise around a block: its called a hustle, sweetie
4:11 “fortunately for you, a person with no money, the city gets their money back from you”
😂
Where is my bonus riddle?
Pixel Fyxe lets copy strike them then
It was killed by ur uglieness
JK lol
It's so fulfilling to have solved it yourself. One reservation though, it took me 2,5 hours.
Guys PLEASE do a lesson on Portuguese man-o-wars!
Here's a riddle why is the town so big if everyone is poor due to that tax law
I just realized the answer the town people watch Ted Ed too
0:50 tax on all VISITORS, not citizens
