  • Here at Tom's Farm, we pride ourselves in having great quality livestock. This is one of our pedigree breeding sows that the students practice showing with. She's a wonderful Character who loves a good bath!
Bathing pigs is usually associated with preparation for competitions and shows. However, bathing your pigs allows for the opportunity to become hands-on and complete a full health check from snout to tail. The act of bring your pig into a small handling area and getting them comfortable with being handled is a fantastic asset to any herd. Having well-mannered and easy to handle pigs makes pig farming an easier, more enjoyable experience. Weather depending, we start bathing our pigs from around 4 months old. I find at this stage, although a little excited - they're usually more amenable and less likely to knock you around in the excitement of the bubbles! When bathing larger, less handled pigs it is important to keep yourself safe, they’re large animals and can easily do damage if not well handled; even the gentlest pig can panic in a small space if it is a new experience. It’s important to remember that everybody will have their ways of bathing pigs. Show people will have their armoury of tips and tricks up their white coat. Whilst there are no set rules to what you can and can't do - We've created a straightforward step by step guide to help beginners.
