I've seen and heard some amazing 1st hand comparisons between started kits and these so-called professional kits made with exotic woods and or made by some BS plywood layering process like DW is shoving down peoples throats . . I have an old 90's yamaha stage custom set and it sounds better than anything DW can create these days. It's all about the tuning . .

Stock Fadi The best sounding bass drum I’ve ever used was from a junk beginner kit I had from when I was a kid (25 yrs ago). Complete with pink house insulation I stapled to the inside for muffling, coated Remo batter (stained yellow from years of storage). A beautiful attack with big deep tone and sound. Lol I have no idea why that piece of junk sounded so good compared to my new kits bass drum.

Bottom line: Rob's method works like a charm. Toms tuned in 10 mins, and sound is awesome. Thank you!
I ran into a tiny problem on the first try tuning Rob's way, and I want to share it.
I made the skins finger tight, but there were only very small ripples that disappeared before I had even touched all the lugs. Turns out I had finger tightened too much, and this alone made some of the ripples disappear. On second try I finger tightened just so the lugs barely resisted turning, and there were the beautiful ripples! So, if you have a problem, maybe you are finger tightening too much.

I have been playing for 49 years, professionally for 39 of those, and I can say that nobody has cut through the unnecessary complication of tuning better. The great thing about this method is that, if you want to tune your drums to notes, or just higher for jazz, etc., this method still puts them in the perfect place to begin. Rob is right at the top of drum instructors on the internet. Good material presented in an understandable way, through an enjoyable and ingratiating personality. well .. basically I agree.. I love this method... but in the studio when rattles come along and snare buzz is a big issue.. then the drum dial is superior to get the perfect pitch.. I CAN tune without.. easy.. but when you are trying to solve a weird resonance issue.. then the dial is perfect!.. Also.. come on.. gaffers tape.. just works.. coating coming off.. never saw that??.. i like moon gel or slapklatz.. but gaffers tape is just time proven and does provide a lot of solutions where gel cant go.. for instance bottom head dampening.. dampening the rear of a ride cymbal.. if you use the right tape it wont leave residue.. unless you leave it on for months.. and then its probably because you want it to stay on :-).. nuff said.. love your videos Rob! Quick,to the point.. and yes.. I use that method too.. going in the studio to track drums for a new record this week.. and this method is always with me.. I do some things a little different, but basically its the same.. it gets me 90% there.

@Jonathan Wheeler What heads are you using? You may have tried this combo, but if not, it's worked for me. Evans G1 coated batter and G1 clear resonant side. Equivalent Remo would be Ambassador coated batter with Clear Ambassador reso. Maybe try a G2 (or Remo Emperor) batter while keeping the G1 on the bottom. Alot of local backline companies in different cities will sell slightly used heads and you can get some different types to try out for little money. Check the bearing edges of your drum, might be something going on there that a head won't fix.

I am blown away by how awesome the drums sound and how easy this was. I figured this might get me "in range" of the tuning I wanted, but pretty sure I'm right where I want to be with minimal effort. Alright, just began my lifelong dream at 56 yrs old of learning to play drums(Stewart Copeland inspired)…after 40 yrs playing guitar and bass….bought a 43 year old Tama Swingstar in midnight blue. Near mint condition 4 piece….polished it up…removed the ORIGINAL Tama heads that were still on it! Bought some REMO ‘Powerstroke 3’ coated for all the Tom’s and bass drum…my tuning sucked! I can tune a snare perfectly….but toms…not so much…
Watched your video, did the floor Tom in 5 min….perfect tone! No bad ringing. Amazing 🤩….did the 13” Tom….in less than 5 min….perfect tone…no ringing! Seems the heads also get properly seated/stretched…so they don’t slip after. Tomorrow….I’ll dismantle the kick/bass drum….same technique with a powerstroke 3/plus black dot batter. I know it will sound amazing!!!! Try it! It really works. Key is firm, strong hand pressure….tension rods badly touching tight.

Man, this is incredible! I’ve been playing for decades. All of that time, regardless of the kit I owned at the time, varying head choices, etc., I’ve always overthought the tuning for the toms. Went as far as to buy a drum dial...which I knew immediately was a waste of money for what I was hoping to accomplish. This method requires none of that and works beautifully. Best of all, it allows me to turn off my OCD and concern that “I’m not doing it right” and just enjoy the sound for what it is...which is brilliant.
    Thanks, Rob!

Scot , Me too . Got a Tune Bot for Xmas , and now see that it is a waste of money. I need to shut off my OCD. And I only play as a retired old Guy at 70 yo as a Hobby. I resurrected my playing after 50 YEARS ! (1969), and knew Nothing of the Art of drum tuning , different Drum heads, etc. I'm learning thanks to TH-cam. and From nice guys like Rob Brown. I think my problem stems form trying to achieve the sound I hear on recordings, which I have come to realize is manufactured by Sound Engineers. I intend to re-tune my Toms in this fashion. I do look to get the Doooo, Doooo sound that is described by Jared on DRUMEO. I don't like overtones/ringing. I see that Rob uses coated heads on each of the drums. I use G2s coated batter heads with the standard clear single ply Reso heads which came on the drums (PDP Concept Maple Kit). Maybe that is a better option, going with coated Reso heads? Your thoughts are appreciated.

I didn't just quit drumming, I quit playing music entirely for a decade. When I finally got around to start up again I wasn't satisfied with how the various vocalists we tried interpreted the (my) lyrics and performed our songs.
So we got a fantastic drummer and I picked up the microphone. I've done everything from gospel to death metal in the past, so it worked out well.
We're in the vicinity of classic, blues inspired late 70s hard rock.

You guessed right and off we went looking for a way to get that “good sound” out of them.
I’m definitely not a rocket scientist and was dreading all the methodology out there.
Well you did a great job demystifying this and very grateful.
Tuned 11 drums in an hour and they all sound best I’ve ever heard!
    However, lol.
I had to overthink it. Just a bit.
I used a 20lb kettle bell to apply the pressure in middle of drums. Other then that did like you said, didn’t stress it just tightened out wrinkles and followed your “that’s it it’s done” way and wow, nothing to it!

Stumbled across Rob's video channel and been hooked ever since. I've learned more from Rob than any other teacher or lessons I've had. Not only a phenomenal player but just as talented teacher. Bless you. I've been playing many years and never felt good about tuning. I use a drum dial, I tap and adjust around the head a million times trying to get the same tone all around. The truth is the more I touch it up, the more confused my ears get. The best tone I get from my toms is when I put the heads on quickly and leave them alone. I assumed some drummers have great ears enabling touch up to perfection, but it eludes me. Definitely treat tuning like rocket science, definitely over think it.
Your method is so quick and easy, and it works! It's such a relief to not fuss about tuning my toms.

I've been tuning this way for over 15 years and it works great! Easy, fast and not complicated plus the toms usually sound awesome with very little need for additional tuning.
Sometimes I will use the Remo-O's / Aquarian Studio Rings for sustain/resinance control in certain situations.
I just changed out the heads on my practice kit, as the band members were warming up and tuning. They didn't even realize that I changed out 4 heads and tuned them in about 10 minutes. They were blown away that I was ready to play without making a ton of noise tapping and tuning etc.
I saw the first video a year or two ago and was impressed that you made that to show everyone this tuning method.
I learned this tuning method from a professional touring drummer many many years ago and was floored when he shared this hack with me.
I am sharing this updated video with my drummer friend who's changing out His heads soon.
He saw the original and liked it but couldn't remember what channel this was from.

You said that if you want an even deeper tone, you tune one lug on each head down. Do you do the same thing for example on a set of high pitch jazz toms, with just tuning up two of the lugs? Love your vids man! Been following for a looong time!

    • @jasonschooler4450
      @jasonschooler4450 5 ปีที่แล้ว

That one lug adjustment on top and bottom head only works for detuning/drop pitch. If you want to go higher just turn each lug 2 or 3 half turns past the point of removing the ripples. Thats just a start, then listen to pitch, and you may need to check the head at each lug to make sure they are all relatively close in pitch. That should get you in the ballpark. Personally I have been using the Evans tension adjust key and have had great luck so far. I hate the Tama Tension Watch tool, just never had good luck with those.
