Hi, Kayla. I’m a designer and your pine floors are always going to pull yellow (especially with poly), so your best bet is to white wash them first to offset the yellow undertones and then apply your poly. Some people may recommend bleach, but it really dries out the wood, so I personally don’t recommend it. Also, someone above mentioned that you should use the sawdust mixed with glue as your wood filler and that is professional grade advice. They also mentioned that you should take off your baseboards and move them down (which I wholeheartedly agree with), but after sanding and staining your floors multiple times, no one will fault you with just wanting to get it done. i'm about to embark on this journey too! Why do you suggest moving the baseboards down? They look already at the bottom to my eye but i'm wondering if i'm going to need to do this too
First of all those floors are not pine. That looks to be white oak but could also be red oak. Based on your picture yellow is popping thru because you didn't sand the floor enough. If you do not 100% sand the finish off your top coat will highlight the areas you didn't sand good enough causing it to look yellowish. The way you applied the poly as well is why the floor looks blotchy.

As a floor refinisher, this is what you need to do: if its yellow, then give it a WHITE PAINT WASH (40% PAINT AND 60% WATER) and coat it 2 times. Then, give it a clear poly. TRY IT IN A SMALL AREA! Trust me 👍🏼
Don't redo the living room instead do that other section that you were showing and then compare the 2 areas. If the other area comes out the way you envision THEN redo the living room.
Maybe try stripping a small square and staining with that crystal clear product before doing the whole thing again and see if you like the look, whatever y’all decide wishing you the best 💕
I think asking a professional before doing anything else would be best. Different types of woods take on different tones. Pine will be brighter/warmer than maybe an oak. Y’all will get it the way you want them. But I love them. The side by side showed a huge difference. Maybe put some furniture in and see how that looks. 😘
Hey Kayla, regular polyurethane normally has a yellow finish. Also, pine has a natural yellowing. IMO, purchase a test small can of crystal clear. Sand section near doorway leading to front door; that way if you find you don’t see a difference, you only have to re-coat that section versus removing in the center of room. I agree, you both had a different application technique. I actually liked the dark stain because it would hide discoloration of old flooring. You can apply lightly and wipe. Everything will work itself out!!!
Yes, this is what I would do. Staining can be so tricky, and I think it'd be good to do a test patch with the crystal clear and see how it works. That can prevent having to redo a whole room before you're sure you have the technique that gives the look you want. This is all super informative for me because we're hoping to redo our orange 1960s floors too eventually!
FYI, hack. Get wood glue and use your saw dust from your bag. Mix the two don't let it get to thick. With the 2 mixed u put it down you'll hardly see any crack. Works great and blends so well. Good luck.
I noticed when u were putting the top coat on looks like your pushing hard on the floor. You need to be Generous with the top coat That will stop it from looking splotche. Hope it works out for you two.
Oil based polyurethane does dry with a yellow tint. Water based polyurethane clear. If you redo it, try satin finish. Also the type of wood will play a part in how it absorbs and the color it gives off.
The floor looks very nice. Excellent job! I have a feeling you want the look of a water based floor finish. It’s Varathane with the blue label. All oil based polys have yellow hue. You all did great!!

The thing is if your floors are pine you will never get that white oak look unless you bleach them. Pine is naturally yellowish and that color will be enhanced with whatever you do. Also unless you used a waterbased stain and sealer, if it was oil based your floors will darken and will naturally orange over time. Additionally, the higher the sheen the more you are gonna see imperfections
Looks absolutely great .. but you guys have to love it and you also sometimes have to be careful with refinishing a floor more than once sometimes you can sand them too much and it ruins the floor
Bona has an AMAZING clear, and white wash sealer. They are absolutely, hands down the most BEAUTIFUL finishes I’ve ever seen. It gives that LIGHT but not white finish that you’re looking for.
The floors are fine. You do not want to do too much sanding on those floors because there’s a point where it won’t be anything left so you have to be careful.
This! Also once you dress the room with furniture and area rugs you aren’t going to see much of it and you won’t be as hyper focused on them. They look really pretty.

Also, I do think you need a professional because unfortunately you were missing a lot of spots. I was rooting for you and screaming at the screen saying look up Kayla, look up you missed another spot. Then I was saying stop, please stop and look at the floor. Gurl, I was truly rooting for you, but I agree with you it needs to be done all over again. I would suggest a professional. Even your application was incorrect with the way you were stroking the mop. I truly feel for you, but you want it done correctly, it is worth the investment. Don't be hard on yourself, just know some things have to be done by the professionals. This is one of those times. You will be so happy in the end ❤

They turned out really nice! I think it is the product you used. I think contact an online floor stain company and speak with a specialist to get a different product, that will leave your floor the bare wood color. A light sand could work if you sand light and be sure to not take too much more off. Definitely seek out for a whole new product. Years ago my husband and I had a floor business and got into sanding floors, repair and stain. It was hard work and we only promised the best we could do. We did not make a lot of money as we were beginners. We had to drive back and forth to get in all the steps. We should of charged more, we were young and had 4 kids. In our 60’s now. People were so picky, and we did a good job. It was too stressful and we chose to not do hardwood floors In our business any more. We stuck to stripping and refinishing with wax on tile floors and janitorial work for big business, Tyson offices was one of our accounts. You two did a beautiful job on the floors so far. I could see the lighter floor being what you want, but they sure are pretty right now too! You two as a team ROCK!!! 💖👍😀
I actually like the new floor colour. The thing with a clear coat is, to achieve a 'light' floor you have to tint it with the colour you actually want. For example an off white or light grey. Because it will just bring out the wood tones.
Wood is warm! That’s why clear still comes out warm. And you always have to sand between stain and varnish shellac because they pull up the wood grain. And you want it smooth. If you want to turn the wood a natural cool/ash you have to use a watered down ash white paint wash and wipe it off right away. Check out videos on refinishing pine furniture to natural ashen (completely non orangish warm) finish.
I made the exact mistake (color was darker than intended).... I ended up redoing my floors and I'm satisfied with the outcome....I put so much effort and time into the process so I know how frustrating it can be to start over... good luck!!! I know you guys will get it done nicely 😊

I am saying the same , try a small section and apply a light coat and wipe a little before it dry , cuz you want just a slight stain...so do a small section at a time and wipe it and that will probably give your color ...try on the old flooring first..you are sure a sweet young lady , love your attitude!!

I would say try testing a small area before working on the entire floor. Also, paint thinner might be easier to remove the poly because sanding too much can make the floor thinner. But definitely contact a professional for advice.

I tried to restrain my floors it was so hard to do we rented everything from Home Depot after finishing I wanted to cry it was awful we eventually got somebody else to come in I was so pleased this was 10 years ago and my floors still look good… get professional love you guy❤😊
Kayla do a second coat for a more even look, but also nice throw rugs of the warm color you want may give you a nice look as well. I think the floor looks nice. But of course you have to like it too.
I did this to my floors when I was 8 months pregnant in 2013, it was break breaking work but I still love my floors. I like the imperfections, it gives it character and charm. I think you will not fully appreciate the floors until the furniture is in place.
Hi Kayla I love your enthusiasm and ‘can do‘ approach, you deserve to get the results you want. If you not at first succeed, try and try again. Water based treatment is more likely the route you should consider. Solvent based varnish will inevitably yellow over time.

My husband an I just refinished floors and had a similar undesired result! Due to the clear coat being oil based it will always have that warm undesired look. We used the brand Bona Mega. Water based finish that have different hues with varying degrees of white pigment to help tone down the natural yellow in the wood too! Use a microfiber paint roller cover on a roller with an extension poll to roll it on generously! It will not be patchy because you work with a wet edge always! Trust me it will give the look you’re going for!
Hi Kayla and Marcus! Check into white wash and Bleaching Floor Stains! As far as sheens... I would stay with a semi gloss because the sheen will lessen as time goes by. Also, check out vibration absorption gloves. You got this... also I see the gap in this video around the baseboards, which is probably you mentioned the quarterround in the last, so you might want to think about popping the base boards off, caulking and sealing the boarder with weatherproof caulk, and putting new baseboards down. 😅❤❤ I know you guys are like this is the project that is going and growing... thank God you are tackling it now, though, so you can enjoy the results for years to come! Bleaching-stains or white wash stains will definitely make you happy! ❤❤❤

The crystal clear is a water based polyurethane and more than likely what you used was oil based polyurethane which has an Amberish look to it naturally. Hope this helps.
Are you sure your floors are pine? They kinda look red oak to me, in that case you might always be fighting that orange tinge, unless you look into how to best get the look you want with a red oak floor. You might look into that, and see if that’s the case, if the floors are red oak. :) ( I think there are stain colors that better neutralize red oak than others) it’s a tricky wood, but can be really nice once you know what to do.
They look nothing like the old floor . I get what you wanted though, the real natural light light wood. Honestly it looks great and def lighter then what you had. What about a polyurethane? But maybe that may turn it yellow in time? i think it looks great!! Xoxox
It's a big difference and the color is beautiful. What I learned when I did my floors is that it gets prettier as it ages. So allow it to sit for a while and see how it looks with your decor. Also to help with troubled spots try the Godora Pure Tung Oil it will help bring it together and help those spots.
I like the floors ! I will say as I saw you brushing on the stuff I was saying "those kind of look like what she had before" but they did lighten up a little bit more over the night.
Maybe try bringing some of the living room furniture in and see how it looks? You might be able to decide better if you see it all together. Or another commenter suggested instead of starting over, try refinishing the entryway floors with the crystal clear and see if you like it, since it's a smaller area. Then if you like the finish better you can redo the living room again. I think that's a great idea too! Either way the floors look great, you and Marcus did an awesome job! In my experience the only way to achieve a lighter finish would be to use a water based product (polyurethane) oil based is what darkens the natural wood. Your floors look gorgeous! Great job!
What I would suggest is us the other room as sample, just a small section. Get sandpaper scrub off one bit use the crystal clear one or two coats what ever is needed. Wait up a few days and then decide.
I actually like it...maybe do the sanding between coats sanding and then put the crystal clear down and see if you like that? But I really like them the way they are. ❤❤
I can imagine all the advice….but hopefully, know it comes with Love from experience…..get a wet/vac….save your vacuum cleaner. They were cheap when I brought mine years ago. But, purpose is for dry & wet items when dealing w/ household projects. Love that you guys started w/ a older home. Learning sooo much & adding equity. Good Luck !!
Kayla I absolutely love the floors ❤❤❤ you guys did a wonderful job and you can definitely see the difference when you did the side by side results!!! New color is beautiful!!! I just don't see any Orangy tones to the new floors at all!!! Hoping maybe you guys will consider adding that second coat if that's what it calls for, just to see how that comes out. I honestly don't know if you can get those wood floors to have the same color as your kitchen counters.

I have to get my bedroom floors refinished after the bank installed carpet when I purchased my home. I definitely liked the look when your floors were sanded before they were newly stained. I'm going for the White wash look is what you seem to want. I learned from your mistake. I have to give you guys credit for DIY. It just seems like the stain color went wrong that u want. My honest opinion, I think your floors are beautiful and look a million times lighter than the original, however I could truly feel your disappointment and I just wanted to cry with you because you guys did so much hard work that when it doesn't come out exactly how you envision there is heartbreak there. Lots of people have given awesome advice, but I really think if you add your furniture back in, you may find you fall in love with it. My parents have old pine floors from the 1800's and all pine is really going to yellow. It's the nature of the wood, but again, I really do love your floors and am so impressed by all your hard work!!
I think it looks great. It is definitely lighter/brighter than the old floors. I'm surprised that a clear coat had color like that. I thought that maybe y'all had chosen a actual tint. I saw where someone said to do the room next to it first with the crystal clear, and see which one you like the best. That's a good idea.
I did the same exact thing- and wanted that white “basketball court” look and was so disappointed. But the floors grew on me so much- I hope they grew on you too- because they look great!

I know Marcus wants to sand and put down another coat of varnish but that will just make it darker. I'd suggest striping again, get the clear coat, perhaps experiment with diluted paint wash to lighten it up a bit. More swatches! It's going to turn out amazing!
I’d suggest: 1. See how your space looks with furniture 2. If you don’t like it, sand and test a patch with crystal clear to see if it works 3. Redo it or pay someone to redo it I say redo it, your home should be what you want it to be for the many years to come. Best of luck to you all ❤.
I always like the look of gel stain especially on flooring. Have used this on a red oak surface and it looked great. I like your stain and it looks fine to me. I like the warmth. You definitely got attached to the fresh and light look of the bare wood. That seems to be the style (Lighter) but I like the classic look. If you do it again try Bona.
Wow, so sorry that after ALL that work you would have to redo it. I loved how your floor looked when it was bare. It was so light and bright, it made the living room look so bright and open! I wish you didn’t have to start over, but I agree that this floor looks too warm and similar to the original. Do they have the same color stain that you put on your counters available? That one seems more natural and bright. It is so easy for me to say to start over, but I feel like you won’t be happy until you do it to your liking. I hope that crystal clear truly is clear.
Personally I really like the color you chose and I would suggest putting your living room back together and living with it for a little while and see how you feel about it before stripping it again.
You could have looked at an oil for the finish, like Osmo. They make good products that will keep the wood its natural colour and without making it too shiny as well. Only thing is you need to re-apply it every few years if you want to keep the floor pristine. When I restored the oak floors in the house we bought, I used Osmo natural oil and am so happy with it.
Clear will always darken. A simple way to go about this would be to sand back down again and apply bona natural and follow with hd traffic raw and it will look the same as they did freshly sanded. Sanding again could help get those drum marks out too.

You can get a white gel
Stain, that may help lighten the wood and remove the orange. Ive got great results with miniwax white gel stain.
I used a whitewash stain by that same brand on a pine cabinet because of the same " yellowing" problem. But, your floors look great to me.

The floors look really good but I would have conditioned them before staining. The wood conditioner preserves the wood and makes the stain even 🙂

You can whitewash with paint or use pickling stain. I know “wood bleaching” is all the rage but it’s totally unnecessary. Esp on original pine floors.

Oil based polyurethane will get more yellow with time so if you don't want that, redo and use a water based clear coat in the satin finish you prefer.

They turned out really nice! I think it is the product you used. I think contact an online floor stain company and speak with a specialist to get a different product, that will leave your floor the bare wood color. A light sand could work if you sand light and be sure to not take too much more off. Definitely seek out for a whole new product. Years ago my husband and I had a floor business and got into sanding floors, repair and stain. It was hard work and we only promised the best we could do. We did not make a lot of money as we were beginners. We had to drive back and forth to get in all the steps. We should of charged more, we were young and had 4 kids. In our 60’s now. People were so picky, and we did a good job. It was too stressful and we chose to not do hardwood floors In our business any more. We stuck to stripping and refinishing with wax on tile floors and janitorial work for big business, Tyson offices was one of our accounts.
You two did a beautiful job on the floors so far. I could see the lighter floor being what you want, but they sure are pretty right now too!

I actually like the new floor colour. The thing with a clear coat is, to achieve a 'light' floor you have to tint it with the colour you actually want. For example an off white or light grey. Because it will just bring out the wood tones.
Wood is warm! That’s why clear still comes out warm. And you always have to sand between stain and varnish shellac because they pull up the wood grain. And you want it smooth.
If you want to turn the wood a natural cool/ash you have to use a watered down ash white paint wash and wipe it off right away. Check out videos on refinishing pine furniture to natural ashen (completely non orangish warm) finish.
I made the exact mistake (color was darker than intended).... I ended up redoing my floors and I'm satisfied with the outcome....I put so much effort and time into the process so I know how frustrating it can be to start over... good luck!!! I know you guys will get it done nicely 😊

Wow! You'll did a good job! I am saying the same , try a small section and apply a light coat and wipe a little before it dry , cuz you want just a slight stain...so do a small section at a time and wipe it and that will probably give your color ...try on the old flooring first..you are sure a sweet young lady , love your attitude!!

White wash or bleach them first. It will cancel out the yellowing. Also use water based satin poly.

I love the floor color. If you redo it, look into applying a conditioner prior to the stain. The conditioner evens out the color.
I would say try testing a small area before working on the entire floor. Also, paint thinner might be easier to remove the poly because sanding too much can make the floor thinner. But definitely contact a professional for advice.

I tried to restrain my floors it was so hard to do we rented everything from Home Depot after finishing I wanted to cry it was awful we eventually got somebody else to come in I was so pleased this was 10 years ago and my floors still look good… get professional love you guy❤😊
i loved the color before you stained the floor. it definitely looks better than before though! try the crystal clear on the other side.
Kayla do a second coat for a more even look, but also nice throw rugs of the warm color you want may give you a nice look as well. I think the floor looks nice. But of course you have to like it too.
I did this to my floors when I was 8 months pregnant in 2013, it was break breaking work but I still love my floors. I like the imperfections, it gives it character and charm. I think you will not fully appreciate the floors until the furniture is in place.

I love your enthusiasm and ‘can do‘ approach, you deserve to get the results you want. If you not at first succeed, try and try again. Water based treatment is more likely the route you should consider. Solvent based varnish will inevitably yellow over time.

I agree do the hallway, a much smaller space. Get that the way you want, then go back to the larger space.
My husband an I just refinished floors and had a similar undesired result! Due to the clear coat being oil based it will always have that warm undesired look. We used the brand Bona Mega. Water based finish that have different hues with varying degrees of white pigment to help tone down the natural yellow in the wood too! Use a microfiber paint roller cover on a roller with an extension poll to roll it on generously! It will not be patchy because you work with a wet edge always! Trust me it will give the look you’re going for!
Hi Kayla and Marcus! Check into white wash and Bleaching Floor Stains! As far as sheens... I would stay with a semi gloss because the sheen will lessen as time goes by. Also, check out vibration absorption gloves. You got this... also I see the gap in this video around the baseboards, which is probably you mentioned the quarterround in the last, so you might want to think about popping the base boards off, caulking and sealing the boarder with weatherproof caulk, and putting new baseboards down. 😅❤❤ I know you guys are like this is the project that is going and growing... thank God you are tackling it now, though, so you can enjoy the results for years to come! Bleaching-stains or white wash stains will definitely make you happy! ❤❤❤
Wood conditioner before stain or clear coat. That will prevent the splotchy-ness and prevent the natural color of orange/yellow pine.

The crystal clear is a water based polyurethane and more than likely what you used was oil based polyurethane which has an Amberish look to it naturally. Hope this helps.
Are you sure your floors are pine? They kinda look red oak to me, in that case you might always be fighting that orange tinge, unless you look into how to best get the look you want with a red oak floor. You might look into that, and see if that’s the case, if the floors are red oak. :) ( I think there are stain colors that better neutralize red oak than others) it’s a tricky wood, but can be really nice once you know what to do.
Since the floors are old and uneven, I would get estimates and let a professional do it
I am a professional custodian you can strip and wax your floor and that will be a whole lot easier and a whole lot better
They look nothing like the old floor . I get what you wanted though, the real natural light light wood. Honestly it looks great and def lighter then what you had. What about a polyurethane? But maybe that may turn it yellow in time? i think it looks great!! Xoxox
It's a big difference and the color is beautiful. What I learned when I did my floors is that it gets prettier as it ages. So allow it to sit for a while and see how it looks with your decor. Also to help with troubled spots try the Godora Pure Tung Oil it will help bring it together and help those spots.
I like the floors ! I will say as I saw you brushing on the stuff I was saying "those kind of look like what she had before" but they did lighten up a little bit more over the night.

Maybe try bringing some of the living room furniture in and see how it looks? You might be able to decide better if you see it all together. Or another commenter suggested instead of starting over, try refinishing the entryway floors with the crystal clear and see if you like it, since it's a smaller area. Then if you like the finish better you can redo the living room again. I think that's a great idea too! Either way the floors look great, you and Marcus did an awesome job! In my experience the only way to achieve a lighter finish would be to use a water based product (polyurethane) oil based is what darkens the natural wood. Your floors look gorgeous! Great job!
What I would suggest is us the other room as sample, just a small section. Get sandpaper scrub off one bit use the crystal clear one or two coats what ever is needed. Wait up a few days and then decide.
That’s a lot of detailed and hard work with patience.❤
I actually like it...maybe do the sanding between coats sanding and then put the crystal clear down and see if you like that? But I really like them the way they are. ❤❤

I can imagine all the advice….but hopefully, know it comes with Love from experience…..get a wet/vac….save your vacuum cleaner. They were cheap when I brought mine years ago. But, purpose is for dry & wet items when dealing w/ household projects. Love that you guys started w/ a older home. Learning sooo much & adding equity. Good Luck !!
Kayla I absolutely love the floors ❤❤❤ you guys did a wonderful job and you can definitely see the difference when you did the side by side results!!! New color is beautiful!!! I just don't see any Orangy tones to the new floors at all!!! Hoping maybe you guys will consider adding that second coat if that's what it calls for, just to see how that comes out. I honestly don't know if you can get those wood floors to have the same color as your kitchen counters.

I have to get my bedroom floors refinished after the bank installed carpet when I purchased my home. I definitely liked the look when your floors were sanded before they were newly stained. I'm going for the White wash look is what you seem to want. I learned from your mistake. I have to give you guys credit for DIY. It just seems like the stain color went wrong that u want. My honest opinion, I think your floors are beautiful and look a million times lighter than the original, however I could truly feel your disappointment and I just wanted to cry with you because you guys did so much hard work that when it doesn't come out exactly how you envision there is heartbreak there. Lots of people have given awesome advice, but I really think if you add your furniture back in, you may find you fall in love with it. My parents have old pine floors from the 1800's and all pine is really going to yellow. It's the nature of the wood, but again, I really do love your floors and am so impressed by all your hard work!!
I think it looks great. It is definitely lighter/brighter than the old floors. I'm surprised that a clear coat had color like that. I thought that maybe y'all had chosen a actual tint. I saw where someone said to do the room next to it first with the crystal clear, and see which one you like the best. That's a good idea.
I did the same exact thing- and wanted that white “basketball court” look and was so disappointed.
But the floors grew on me so much- I hope they grew on you too- because they look great!

Your video showed up on my feed and I have an idea for you to ponder... I'm wondering if you can buy a sample piece of golden oak flooring, find a white-wash stain to help give a cooler tone to the flooring that you're looking for & then clear coat.

I know Marcus wants to sand and put down another coat of varnish but that will just make it darker. I'd suggest striping again, get the clear coat, perhaps experiment with diluted paint wash to lighten it up a bit. More swatches! It's going to turn out amazing!
I say strip it again cause that natural look was beautiful .
I’d suggest:
1. See how your space looks with furniture
2. If you don’t like it, sand and test a patch with crystal clear to see if it works
3. Redo it or pay someone to redo it

I always like the look of gel stain especially on flooring. Have used this on a red oak surface and it looked great. I like your stain and it looks fine to me. I like the warmth. You definitely got attached to the fresh and light look of the bare wood. That seems to be the style (Lighter) but I like the classic look. If you do it again try Bona.

Wow, so sorry that after ALL that work you would have to redo it. I loved how your floor looked when it was bare. It was so light and bright, it made the living room look so bright and open! I wish you didn’t have to start over, but I agree that this floor looks too warm and similar to the original. Do they have the same color stain that you put on your counters available? That one seems more natural and bright. It is so easy for me to say to start over, but I feel like you won’t be happy until you do it to your liking. I hope that crystal clear truly is clear.
Personally I really like the color you chose and I would suggest putting your living room back together and living with it for a little while and see how you feel about it before stripping it again.
You could have looked at an oil for the finish, like Osmo. They make good products that will keep the wood its natural colour and without making it too shiny as well. Only thing is you need to re-apply it every few years if you want to keep the floor pristine. When I restored the oak floors in the house we bought, I used Osmo natural oil and am so happy with it.
We did our wood floors, but we loved the stain we chose. It is hard work but worth it. Marcus has a good idea. Ask a professional.
Clear will always darken. A simple way to go about this would be to sand back down again and apply bona natural and follow with hd traffic raw and it will look the same as they did freshly sanded. Sanding again could help get those drum marks out too.
Hey Kayla! If you and Marcus agree on a redo, go for it! It’s not permanent it can be changed. A little more work but it will be worth it to get exactly what y’all want. Excited to hear and see what y’all decide! Trust yourself you have good taste!
I think the bona natural seal with satin finish is the true look of the sanded floor color
