  • Can a wheel heavy mill deck work in Modern? Let's find out!
    ◼ This video is brought to you by R.E.P. Gaming Products. Help protect your deck and support the show. Pick up a steel deck box at www.repgamingp...
    Last week during our Instant Deck Techs, it was the crazy Miraculous Mill deck for Modern that came out on top. As a result, we're heading back to Modern today to give mill another shot. If you've been following the series for a while, you'll know that last time we played a mill deck (Mono-Blue Mill), it was one of the all-time worst decks in Much Abrew history, so today's Miraculous Mill deck is looking to redeem the archetype! Oh yeah, a quick warning: I recorded this episode the morning after getting home (at 3 am) from Grand Prix Vegas, so if I'm a little loopy, it's a combination of a really long and fun week in Vegas and jet lag. Anyway, can the addition of red cards and some miracles make mill competitive in Modern? Let's get to the videos and find out!

    I honestly have no idea how SO found this deck. It's a former Standard deck (that was moderately successful in Standard) that I ported to Modern (by the looks of it, without really changing the SB) that according to my deckfile I haven't updated since August 2014. It's not supposed to be a budget deck. It's not supposed to be a competitive deck. I don't think I've actually ever won a match with it in Modern. It's literally just a quick, bad, un-updated Modern port of an old Standard deck I liked. It looks like I played it once back in February to fill a 4 man M-L mini to lose as quickly as possible (the minis can't fire unless they have 4, so I usually pull a deck like this that I have fun playing with the full intention to lose 2-0). I do have an updated version of this IRL, but it's not really better - you can see the list here: www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1164642#paper. There's no way to make this deck good, so don't bother adding money to it.
    If you want to play a Mill deck that doesn't suck, I would recommend this list: mtgdecks.net/Modern/ub-glimpse-the-unthinkable-decklist-by-duckyninja-729009. It's not amazing (mill has its limits), but I've had moderate success with it at the FNM level and it's actually way more fun to play IMO. If you're looking for a quality super budget deck, you can go with www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/959278#paper (I don't have a SB built for it, I don't even have it sleeved, but it's a fun deck and it's super cheap and it does win some games). I have a lot of other really cool lists that are successful, so why he picked this one, I don't know.

    Funny story, I actually have a similar deck to this already built... except instead of wheels, mine runs the Bant Enchantresses along with a lot of stuff like Utopia Sprawl and Ghostly Prison, standard enchantress stuff. I also run Sphinx's Erasure, which for 1 mana more is at least twice as effective as Jace's Erasure, and I'm genuinely not sure why you aren't.

    Could we do another series of this with additions of Riverwise Augur and Field of ruin, if you're gonna stay budget.
    I feel like riverwise augur and field of ruin would have completely changed the consistency of the deck. Augur gives a body to block on top of resetting miracles, field/ghost hits archive traps.
    I'd also like to see a full $$ money list just to see how it would work, with moons, Jaces, maybe snaps? list is nice.

  • @Bloodfire83

    Jace's Archivist seems bad here. Being the only creature in your deck, it's just a lightning rod for otherwise dead removal from your opponents.

    • @totalcoward
      @totalcoward 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, but it gives a repeatable wheel effect, if opponents keep in creature removal just to deal with it then that takes away spaces for better sideboard cards, and if they take out all creature removal for counters it gives a way to work around them.

    • @gastastrophe1092

    No Dream Salvage!? In this deck it's almost like a 1 mana draw 14! (which then would mill another 14!)

      Hmm, I've never played a Dream Salvage deck, we'll have to try it sometime!

      Here's my submission for a fishbowl Thursday deck. It uses Wheel of Fate and Dream Salvage to storm off and to activate Runeflare Trap.

    A Jace TMS or Riverwise Augur surely could have helped this deck out a little bit?

      Even just an Index.

      Not sure about Index, but Jace (and maybe Riverwise too, for miracles) seem like good additions.

    Why no sphinx's tutelage and fraying sanity for faster mill?

    • @MTGGoldfish
      @MTGGoldfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that plan might be more effective, but it's less cool!

    Why not play a couple fraying sanitys in the deck?

    Wouldn't Scrabbling claws be better than Crypt?

    • @MTGGoldfish
      @MTGGoldfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe, the problem with Claws is that is can only hit one card. Relic is nice since it has the flexibility to eat one card or to eat everything.

    Why no Sphix Tutelage? I am very curious

      We didn't actually build this one, it's an instant deck tech deck.

      I am kind of new to the channel, so i didnt knew you played the deck exactly as it was send to you ( which is pretty cool and unique ) i thought you would build upon the archtype. So i have to ask whoever made this, why no sphyx? hahah
