Death stranding is literally the definition of: "I had to walk, so you could run"
Nice 🙂
Damn this hit hard!
yep, well said
Woah... Deep...
A lot of people mislead Death Stranding experience, I mean, I only fell 3 times in 150+ hours of gameplay and I've seen TH-camrs Falling more than 4 times at the very first beginning and that can make the difference when you start a new game and get frustrated, gotta think before climb a ladder in the middle of nowhere like 4:02 xD
"Kojima doesn't want you to suffer, he wants you to reduce the suffering of others" - the best line about Death Stranding I've come across in any review.
That almost sounded like a description about God..., or something religious...
Scare crows well Kojima IS a religion after all :D
"this isn't a review of death stranding, this is how death stranding convinced me video games have potential beyond belief"
So it's basically anti-Dark Souls. Meh, load of shit. Back to my loner games. Hope this social shit doesn't become a norm, as did constant server connection demand from singleplayer-centric games.

Using the Office's scene to compare Kojima and Konami's relationship had me dying lol
after reading an article about Kojima's departure with Konami...."I thought I had lost everything, but I found out that I had a lot of connections. Like Sony people, like Norman [Reedus], like Geoff [Keighley]. I really wanted to reconnect with these people that I thought were really important." Im sure that Death Stranding is what Kojima experience...
I'm pretty sure it was just a commentary about the benefits of globalism in a divided world.
@@nathandts3401 It's very obviously one of those maximalist games, stretching it's themes, drama and systems to be about as many things as possible, however incoherently. But yes that by definition fits under the globalism vs. divisiveness thing as well.
I think the statement "when you stop playing for yourself and start playing for others" hits the nail on head on what makes the game so amazing.

Without wishing to spoil, Nier: Automata hit me like a truck for similar reasons. And I think those who like Death Stranding would like it.

Funny how some dude's girlfriend understood what so many gamers and professional game journalists failed to understand.
Sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees. You need the outsider perspective to recalibrate your own at times.
Well to be fair, her boyfriend writes the scripts. I'm sure she has an influence but it's probably 90% Matt creating the script.
I believe he writes the script.
And knowing this still does not make the game fun just because you know this. The problem with Death Stranding, is that it isn't actually fun, the game is actually a chore to play, your challenges are clunky gameplay coupled with too much rocky mountainous terrain and a very depressing story.
It just makes the entire experience, not fun to engage with. Games are supposed to be fun, this just fails at being fun.
@@rezarfar Fun is subjective, bro. We all know enough about DS to know this isn't a game for everyone. You reasoned why you personally don't like the game...and that's totally cool. I can see where you're comin from.
But that subjective experience doesn't equal objectively a bad or unenjoyable game. It's just not as an accessible a game as Kojima's other stuff.
In movie terms...I think a lot of people wanted or were expecting a summer blockbuster, but Kojima gave us an art house film instead.
@@yourneutralness8755 Then what's the point of girlfriend reviews if he writes it?

@@mr.snaplles5964I found it satisfying to be able to reach a destination that I never thought I'd be able to get to. Plus, I found it very rewarding to help other players when i can. The experience was very different to the other games I played but that didn't make it any less fun for me. Sure it had some clunky controls, long cut scenes, a terrible beginning, and overall more problems than i originally wanted, but it is still a great experience none the less.

So Kojima got tired of people on the internet being assholes all the time and made a whole ass big deal video game to teach us all to be nice? What a cool dude.
And it's feel like the early part of the game is kinda designed to filtering those assholes out of the game from the 1st place.

I got this game as a gift when recovering from surgery. It was a hysterectomy, so playing a game caring for a crying fetus and the frustrations of falling all over the place wasn't exactly a welcome distraction from my situation. I put the game aside, and in the meantime my husband picked it up. He too quit after a short while! Then, he eventually got back into it and convinced me to try again. Now it's one of my favorite games of all time. I've finished all the trophies and am going back to play from the start again. It's significantly less frustrating this time, and a more healing experience too, helping me come to terms with not being able to have children. (It's OK though, I have a dog and lots of love and happiness.) Best review ever - you've gained a subscriber! Keep on keeping on 👍
EDIT: Oh my goodness so much support, I didn't realize. Wow, this community is really great, that's so nice. Making me emotional actually.

-Shelby
doesn't that just make the gameplay easy as shit? i mean its a cool concept but it seems like it works better on paper. idk this game seems more like a trial of annoyance rather than a genuine challenge
Can confirm, you can suffer alone or suffer less together. I put alot of effort into Part 3's highway cause I knew how critically useful it was to me and others. When you see 3+ abandoned reverse trikes 2 sections away from the next Distro you cant help but feel a little bad for them. So I did the stupid thing and made sure those sections were built. Now me and quite a few more have a road from Lake to Distro. And its satisfying.
People will still enjoy it. Just look at the number of people using cheats to make gameplay easier. There will always be people who will still find enjoyment if the easy road is taken.
Robert Dillinger I generally have the same mindset as you. I’m someone who doesn’t like “online multiplayer” experiences, so I had no interest in using other people’s stuff. I wanna play games for myself.
But once you see how brutal and taxing the world and game mechanics (in a good way) are, you change that mindset real quick. It’s genuine joy to see a ladder or Bridge built by someone else, when you’ve run out of the tools you need to finish the delivery. And it’s genuine joy to build something that could potentially save hundreds of other people during their gameplay.
Carpet Bombing I’ve been doing the mountain stuff this week. It’s definitely an experience! Zip lines are a godsend though
"Whether you love or hate Death Stranding, we should all applaud when someone tries to push how high they can fly." You blew me away. This is what people not getting and hating the game for no reason
Yea, I really don't get why so many people downvoted it on metacritic. It's Kojima using what he's learned as a game dev to try and do something unique. Something Konami never would have agreed to. It's not for everyone but it doesn't need to be.
I hate this game because of it's awful gameplay.
@@reed1645 great cool, but this game isn't fun like at all maybe not for some people but definitely for most, that's why people down voted it
@@jub8951 I think it's hard to say most people didn't enjoy it. As a fan of stealth based action and horror I found that initially it was quite slow but later delivered exactly what I was hoping for.
Typically I don't enjoy survival mechanics but I thought they were executed well in this game and the story was fantastic. I found it to be very fun and I think most people who were patient and stuck with it had the same experience. I also loved the shared game mechanics.
At the end of the day it's a single player game offering 40 plus hours of content and no microtransactions. Kojima was very upfront that this game was going to involve a lot of walking and traversal. He could have shown raids on mule camps and boss fights but he didn't because most of the time you're trying to navigate a harsh and unforgiving environment with the help of your own supplies and the structures and items left by others.
Getting upset with someone for trying to make something different is dumb. Some of the ideas present in the game are going to influence other devs and improve other games too. That's a good thing.
@@reed1645 I mean you are contracting yourself by first asking what people downvoted it then saying it's not for everyone.... A person brought the game... Didn't liked it... Downvoted him... Maybe it wasn't for him... Thats the reason.. If you can like a game... A person can dislike a game
This video sold me Death stranding few weeks ago and now, after 70+ hours of gameplay I think that Kojima deserves every damn penny I payed for this. Truly breathtaking experience!
Same. Just shows you should always form your own opinions on something and not go with the herd.
I rebuilt the entire highway by myself by claiming supplies from the different places, raiding the mules and driving around in a truck to deliver them to the stations. Up until that point the game was annoying. Then I realised the whole point of the gameplay was to make traversing the environment easier. Finished the story now but will go back and create a network of ziplines to take people to every city and npc and then get every delivery done.
Did that as well. Spending 80+ hours in game 2 years ago still seems like the best possible investment of my free time

@@dayko. Altruistic acts can be tedious. There are people travelling miles to hurricane area (for example) to relieve the suffering of other, there is no trill or excitement in it. But to see the act of your goodwill changed others for better is a joy that worth all the tediousness.
True that the game's not for everyone. Up to chapter 2 I was so close to giving up this game myself, then the chapter 3 changed the game for me. 70 hrs in and I'm still in chapter 3 making highways and bridges, and taking joy in the fact that I helped ease the pain of thousands of other players is the truly fantastic experience I've ever had in any video games.

Glad I'm not the only one with full eyes. As soon as she started describing the community aspects of it, I thought back to my own painful struggle building a mountain top zipline system much like the one shown in this video, and then being amazed at the thousands of likes it accrued over the day. It was honestly one of the most satisfying experiences I've had gaming.
OMG exactly. Also I have to play this game now.
The ending really drove this in for me. There was a moment when navigating the last delivery that it seemed like I couldn't make it. I didn't have many supplies for the long trek initially, time fall rain was everywhere and BTs where flooding the entire area. Worse yet I couldn't fabricate anything new. So I was running as quickly as I could not to lose the package as I wasn't sure what would happen if I did (I thought maybe there was alternate endings and i'd get a bad one). And then i'd stumble onto a barely operational time fall shelter made by another player. There was something I experienced in these moments when complete strangers saved my ass and they had no idea. The hand full of likes given can't really convey how much I appreciated it. And then it dawned on me how there were probably countless players that experienced moments like these in all these structures I've seen dotting the landscape. Gone was the perspective that these were just meaningless fake internet points. I finally realized that countless players experienced moments like this. All those structures dotting the landscape looked completely different. Even the one off ladder with 20 points seemed like it was likely very helpful for another player. The game has it's problems but it's still one of my favorite games of the last decade.
Love this game myself as it's one of my favorites of all time.
this kind of sounds like a more involved journey then, stressing the importance of interconnectedness, and letting you help one another.
much like "the boyfriend", about halfway through my first play through of the game I unconsciously stopped doing things for just myself, opting instead to do things more beneficial for myself AND other players
what's been wild is going back on PS5 and experiencing the same kind of thing. there are still people playing/replaying, and those moments still regularly happen; the purpose of the game lives on even now
I'm interested to see how it all holds up down the road, but there's no doubt in my mind that Death Stranding will become a major talking point in gaming history
Damn, thanks for sharing your story with us. Sounded really heartwarming
Sadly a lot of players focused on placing structures in locations where they'd farm likes from NPC porters, and the spam of signs in roads so you have no option but to trigger them with a like as you drive by. These like farming structures prevent a large amount of actually helpful ones from spawning on people's worlds unless you manually veto your list of connected players to try to get rid of the useless farmers. But other than that... I absolutely love this game, I keep playing it again once in a while.
"Not for everyone" to me is probably the highest praise in the current gaming era, even if I’m part of the people it’s not for.
So much this. So many games these days seem to be focus tested and squished down to try and fit in that "largest possible target audience" hole that it has become an absolute joy find and play something where the devs just made something cool and interesting that just does it's own thing rather than trying to make the highest amount of money possible.
This comment is so true. In a sea of games trying to be for everyone, those that dare to try and appeal to a specific demographic deserve praise.
So much this. I don't connect with a lot of recent games. But Death Stranding is for me. It may also be for others, but it really is MY game. It's been 3 years since I felt like this the last time about a game. Gotta count your blessings I guess.
"A game for everyone is a game for no one." - Arrowhead Studios motto
Yeah, when I look at the games that are currently really popular they are the total opposite of what I want. Not trying to shame anybody that enjoys those games but as somebody who has been playing games since the PS1 I feel like modern game publishers have become more focused on business than art. The first and only game that changed me, before playing I was going on a self destructive path that would've lead me to become a sad cynical person but this game make me realize that it's better to help each other and come together to make the best out of it, to reconnect with people, to keep on keeping on...
I believe it's somewhat similar in the way MGS changed me, its pacifist stance, it making a statement of how you don't need to kill in the game, so avoid doing it, and the guilt trips it sends you on for doing it, even if sometimes minimal, does work in its favor
This is one of the reasons why I don't like multiplayer games where you just have to kill everyone and instead prefer games where killing is optional
When I play pubg, I do it stealthily to avoid killing someone unnecessarily, because the goal isn't to kill but to survive, unlike most FPS games where the goal is to kill(or capture the flag or whatever)

@@Erickjm89 same here. I remember checking for new vids all the time but there was only like 2 or 3. Time is a very easy thing to forget about. So easy, you never realize it passes.
It's timefall dude, timefall sucks... :)
I'm having the exact same crisis
It’s been like 2 years...but the moment when you come over a hill after a long trek with a ton of cargo and you can finally see your destination at Port Knot City and it starts playing Asylum For The feelings by Silent Poets...that’s the moment where the game clicked for me and stopped being just a video game where you hold the shoulder buttons while you trek across barren landscapes and started being a work of beauty unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced
When you realize a review that was supposed to be kinda satiristic turned out be the most well articulated one found on TH-cam
Took them a lot less time than Tim Rogers' three hours of postmodern literary monologuing on exactly the same conclusions, at least.
"The weight you carry is not yours alone. Everyone is walking the same difficult paths and everyone feels over-encumbered." Honestly, that was such a beautiful way to put it. I personally loved this game, and I never played a Hideo Kojima game before. I always dabbled in games that had a narrative, and I was honestly scared of getting into this game because of the negative reviews and how people were saying this game was boring. I'm glad I stuck with it. Yes, the game has its flaws and the gameplay can push people away and that's fine, this game is not for everyone and there are things in this game that some people will hate and some people will love. Death Stranding was an experience for me, there was lots of frustration, tears, and happiness, and to my fellow porters who built bridges, ladders, generators, postboxes, timefall shelters, and much more thank you so much. You made my experience and journey a worthy and beautiful one.
You just use the PCCs to build for yourself, or to try and farm likes for link upgrades. It's a gimmick, not meaningful interaction like you might get in an MMO. It's no more personal than Twitch chat or Twitter.
It's a seemingly intentionally painful experience to make you happy when you see other people's randomly selected structures or pieces of story. The game conditions you to tolerate it's misery over many hours just so you can be overjoyed when it gives you some scraps. It's Stockholm syndrome the game. Very interesting from a psychological perspective.
If you manage to see past that, you'll find holding the stick forward over a bridge isn't exactly fun and that waiting to pass between zip line tethers is just, well...waiting. You might also realize just how bad the story is.
If I wanted to play with others, I'd play WoW, Minecraft or Destiny. If I wanted a travelling game I'd play Journey or Shadow of the Colossus. If I wanted a story game I'd play Detroit: BH or Heavy Rain. Remember that this game has zero player choice despite *over nine hours of cutscenes*
The only thing that this game does well is manipulate people into thinking it's better than it really is.
@@AlexK-sk4qb Interesting input! Even while I personally loved the game, I'm interested to see why others disliked it.
Honestly on my first run, I did use PPC's for myself to progress through the story but I thought hey at least it would contribute to someone. I'm on my second run and currently making roads and bridges for people, and while others may find that a chore and not engaging, I found it addicting.
The game you mention btw I have played, DBH, Heavy Rain, and Minecraft and those games are good. I did find the lack of choice in Death Stranding quite disappointing, and if it were to be implemented maybe it would have more impact but who knows?
When it comes to this game to each their own, and agree to disagree because I personally loved this game. There are plenty of games that will fill everyone's needs in regards to story and gameplay and this one may not be the one for everybody or have people see eye to eye about.
Also need to add that thanks for taking the time to actually give your thoughts about the game rather than saying "it sucks" or a short answer haha.
@@heygirlie6786, you did a second run dedicated to building structures? I mean, the game randomly selects who your structures appear to, if anyone, and you never even see these people.
I can understand the attraction of reducing the pain of others, but this game is a completely voluntary experience, and one that people pay for at that. Maybe you should go do some volunteer work or something. You know, interact with and help others in a meaningful way.
@@AlexK-sk4qb It's currently in the works but here and there, whenever I have the time to put in the hours. I wasn't aware of the randomized part though so thanks for informing me, makes sense though. I assume it would make the game too convoluted if you just had these random structures everywhere. I also like the fact that I can't see the people in the game, but hey that's probably just me.
Oh of course, however it's the choice we made and paid for. Death Stranding won't amount to real life, because helping others is free and I actually do like helping others irl and try to go my way to help others in meaningful ways. However, I also have time to play the game too so I choose to do both!
"It's a revelation that the weight you carry isn't yours alone, everyone is walking the same difficult paths"
Can't be described with better words
And one of the best parts is that everyone walking the same difficult path literally makes it a little less difficult, bit by bit. Players' footsteps erode the rocks and make a smooth footpath.
I love everything about this game! None of that happens if you aren't in a hurry. You aren't supposed to be in a hurry with this game. This game is so relaxing, beautiful and genius! If you play it like its designed to be played it is perfect!

7:55 made me think of bebop "youre gonna carry that weight" but death stranding says, "we're gonna carry that weight"
After the reaction to TLOU Part 2, the "divisive" nature around this game seems tame in comparison.
But the thing is TLOU2 even though I'm attracted to controversial media, TLOU2 is just FLAWED to death, not to mention the studio isnt the most passionate about actual storytelling anymore
@@priyangakirihena185 “the studio isn’t the most passionate about storytelling anymore” dude, they literally killed off a money making cash cow and took multiple high risk just for the story, are you joking or some shit?

"If the opening hours weren't so cruel, if the traversal wasn't so punishing, all that goodwill wouldn't hit so hard."
"Kojima doesn't want you to suffer, he wants you to reduce the suffering of others."
This is the best "non-review" I have seen so far of this game. All of the reviews who give Death Stranding low scores, or those who hate on the game, were clearly missing the point. To be honest, I did miss the point too, I initially found the game boring (didn't hate it though, just didn't care). But you have so very articulately ELI5'ed to me what had gone over my head by a mile. So thank you. You clearly have an unbiased approach to your observations of games, and for that you have my sub.
I think so many of us who picked up DS thought it to be boring, but those who stuck it out all felt the hauntingly beautiful reward of being isolated, yet connected. The dichotomies in this game are strong, but when I learned to appreciate it, this game became one of my all-time favorites.
@@Mo0m0oSaZn If you want to play a game that puts you in an isolating world but yet makes you feel connected to others by what other's who came before you left behind then just play Dark Souls
@@TimeBomb014X And again based on what everybody is saying, DS isn't trying to violent and use a heavy use of action to make a compelling gameplay, it's trying to allow players to find engaging ways to overcome obstacles with the tools that you have from overturning the land and environment with the technology you have.
And Dark Souls doesn't allow players to interact gameplay ways the same way Death Stranding does as it Dark souls leaves notes from players in simple messages with player re[lay death scenarios, DS leaves gears, tools, structures, and the assistance of missions without being there from sending each other packages to one another. Dark Souls doesn't do this and it's fine because both games are striving for different things.
If you expect every game out there to be non stop action, then there is no need to play anything other than back to back action. The game clearly has barren world to explore for it's hiking/exploration aspect of trying to course through the experience.
You are on such a high level of endurance to basically tell anyone who likes the game is wrong for doing with out looks at the bigger picture and just looking at things at a narrow minded point of view.

Same! I ziplined the routes at the craftsman portion exactly because of the expense! LOL
I mean if your following the same routes the terrain smoothes out over time. Eventually even large rocks will disappear
I spent almost 4 days to build MOST of road segments (other players donated the initial bits of resources needed for most of them) and I have to tell that the most expensive ones are 4 and 5 from Mountain Knot City. Next to a BT area where the mountain starts. If I'm not mistaken, one requires 9k metals and 5.5k ceramics
I spent a solid week and a half building every single inch of highway from Port to South and from Port to Mountain. What a nightmare that was.

coming back to this video after tlou2, really fills me with poignant that there are so few heros left in the industry that try to push the boundaries and do something different. And instead of welcoming it we despise and reject it, and then we wonder how the AAA industry devolved into what it is today *sigh
now time go see what other wonderful things EA/Activision did today, cant wait.....
I think TLOU2 is in a different league here. it tries something bold that can only be judged by the subjectivity of the player, DS however is objectively bad in trying something new. I have seen enough of this game to see the game is highly flawed and doesn't offer you in sort of creative freedom in it's 1 singular objective of delivering mail, and that the best thing about this game that GR here talks about is having other people help you skip the game by making it easier to move around in.
@@TimeBomb014X I mean, i agree with your sentiment on the 2 games, but your analysis is hypocritical.
If we were to distill tlou2's gameplay down to its simplest form it also has 1 singular objective "kill your enemies" and the best thing about that game is forcing the perspective of someone u hate on u through gameplay.
Tlou2 definitely isnt impervious to objective criticism, u cant say that just because its forceful narrative decision is something new that can only be attempted in video games and therefore u can only judge it subjectively. Thats just conformism.
Just to reemphasize i LOVE tlou2, but it can definitely be "highly flawed" depending on how heavily u weigh its negatives
@@mfyippekiyay728 Oh it is highly flawed no doubt but the difference here is that gameplay loop of kill your enemies is enjoyable because of how tense each encounter can be and just how you can lose control of it and be forced to improvise. Death Stranding not so much, DS needed to be more like BoTW in the freedom it offers you in how to deliver packages, I've seen vids of the clunkyness of the traversal and how the game simply doesn't reward creative thinking. And for a game like DS where all you do is deliver packages that is the biggest mistake it can do
@@TimeBomb014X Death Stranding offers a plethora of tools, vehicles, and structures you can build to plan out and most efficiently deliver your packages from A to B. I have never seen such in-depth mechanics for traversal alone in a game and the physical complex terrain in DS accentuate that gameplay aspect. The way the social systems work where the structures built by players can help overcome obstacles for others and they can give positive feedback pretty ingenious. It incentivizes you to get creative at finding best places to build the right structures in a way that not only helps you but also others and when you start to get tons of likes knowing you are helping other players it is surprisingly rewarding. Overall I find the traversal much more engaging in DS as opposed to Zelda BOTW's which consists of slowly climbing with no real challenge besides watching a green circle deplete and then paraglide to the direction you want to go then rinse and repeat. That got old for me pretty quickly. Also when you build roads in Death Stranding (or use ones built by others) you can blast through the game world at very high speeds with high-speed bikes whereas in Zelda BOTW traversal is really slow all throughout the game and highly depends on fast travel to shrines to not get annoying.
@@weaverquest so the best part of the game is when you skip the game is what it sounds like. Also play Breath of The Wild if you want true freedom and creativity in the game mechanics. I've seen footage of how vehicles are woefully undermined by the terrain in a bad way. But for me the moment I knew DS failed to give players the tools to Travers it's world was when a player created a bridge out of ladders so he could drive his car over it, but instead of actually driving over the ladders or they break under the car's weight, the car instead clips right through them and falls off the cliff.
Firstly: best Death Stranding review I've seen. You're hilarious and very well spoken.
Also, you said the bit about your boyfriend understanding once he started playing for others instead of himself, which is exactly how my boyfriend reacted too. He played it after I did, he was hating on it, so I told him to try investing in building stuff and contribute to another player's experience instead of just fumbling around on standard orders. He still didn't get it then. But he played for a while, and once he started staying up till 3am to build a zip line network, that's when I knew he got it.
