Back in those days, despite the low mpxl count, I believe manufacturers were giving really good lens quality. I think that's why this camera and others from that era can be so surprisingly good.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras

A solid take on the phenomenon of these old cameras being good performers.

    • @login415
      @login415 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'm a year late to this conversation, but I'm in absolute agreement with you @billr6983. There was that transition period when folks were starting to ditch their 35mm/APS AF cameras as digital started to become more accessible (i.e., cheaper) for the masses. Familiarity was super important for the transition. Camera manufacturers needed to sell the idea that digital cameras weren't just a fad, but a serious alternative to film. Given that early sensors weren't as versatile as their film counterparts (since you can find a style/sensitivity you like with a different roll of film), I really do believe they had the hard task of making sure digital cameras stuck around through awesome lens quality.
I love that the digital cameras of this era held you responsible for your shots, and I think that's why it was so satisfying when you finally get that perfect shot. Such a sense of accomplishment. I think that's why digital cameras still survive to this day. Of course, everyone loved the idea that you could shoot as much as you wanted (memory card and battery permitting), but it's hard to think that there was a period where shake reduction, perfect night shots, automations, and computations weren't the norm like we have on smartphones these days. Even during the mid-2010s when digital cameras were saturating the market, they started pushing megapixels, and smart features like selfie mode or social media-ready videos (lol at 640x480 youtube mode on Casio EXILIMs).
Thanks for sharing these gems @OneMonthTwoCameras. This reminds me of the era when I got my first Kodak DX 4mp camera. The lens and colors were so pleasant.
I blame you and other youtubers for driving up costs on the used digicam market 😄

I found a canon g5 (5 mega pix) at Goodwill for $3. I use it on still life pics. Pictures come out awesome and remind me a bit like film. They fill a void between film and ultra sharp digital. More and more people are discovering them. All the best. Jim from Georgia

My first ever digital camera is the newer model of this, C-760. I still have it and it still works, it's a great camera, takes much better pictures than the resolution implies as the lens is just wonderful. I have a 10 megapixel pocket camera about 10 years newer and the Olympus still takes better pictures, especially as the long lens means there's no need to crop or "digizoom" so the whole resolution is actually usable.

I am a bit of a refugee from the spec wars, Fx3 and a closet full of GM. Love my setup. But. A lack of soul pervades. No playfulness.
These old ones, once you look past on-paper technical attributes, have way more of a heartbeat/emotion. I think the engineers had so little to work with back then that they had to pour a lot more of themselves into the final product to make it work. And it shows.

I have the ca. 2000 Olympus Camedia C-2040 Z 3x Zoom. I used it all through the noughties "until digital got better than film". I still use it. it is currently sporting a IR 720nm filter, that has to have a custom WB set. It has the marginally larger "half inch" sensor but only 2.1 Mp. It records on a SmartMedia card, we can still read these, and still supported by current OM Workspace. It was not cheap when new and testament to it still working perfectly over 20 years later.
Colour and definition are good. It shoots ISO 100, 200, 400, but I do not dare use anything other than ISO 100.
It shoots TIFF, and jpeg in SHQ and HQ. TIFF takes a long time to process, shoot SHQ. It will shoot movie, maybe.
It is small but slightly larger than my mft Olympus E-PL7.

I’ve been searching for a camera like this one for a while. I found the C-725 at goodwill today for 5 bucks. I always lion at old videos and photos, and almost get jealous of the uniqueness of the look, whether it’s the grain, or low resolution, because it’s so cool seeing such a vastly different perspective. I always wanted a camera that could take photos with a mix of modernity, and late 90s rawness. This camera offers that perfect in between. This is the missing link. The C-740 was my main camera from about 2004 to 2011 at which time I purchased an Olympus XZ-1 which rendered it pretty much obsolete for me. This is a very nice camera, though somewhat bulky. I carried it on my belt in a TAMRAC 5693 which was perfect. I shot in AUTO mode and the colors were always very nice, they tended to be on the slightly saturated side, which I like. Indoor photos always came out great with the flash. The lens "wobble" a bit and this was perfectly normal for these cameras, so don't be concerned about this if yours does. One thing people don't know about this camera is that it can be fitted with filters. Get the Olympus Lens Adapter CLA-4 and you can fit any filter you want on it.

It has the awesome Fuji color and sharpness of the S2 but the dynamic range of the S5. The E-1 produces some of the most beautiful colors I've ever seen from camera. What "Olympus and Fuji converters" do you use?
Olympus, Panasonic and Fujifilm produce "Extended-RAW" files and the truth is that Adobe does not understand them. I'm afraid Adobe Camera-RAW/PS/LR just leave me with a lot of work to do manually, I may use PS to fix a jpeg (I have PS Premiere because I shoot movie too).
Silkypix (ISL) had a hand in building the Panasonic Venus engine, it converts Panasonic well but the editor is clunky. Fuji offer a converter "powered by Silkypix". Silkypix will also convert Olympus ORF but the best converter for the Olympus colours is probably OM Workspace, but that is not a full editor.
DXO Photolab Elite makes a good go of converting Olympus and Panasonic files (unless you give it a lens it doesn't recognise).

I recently scored a Sony Handycam from 2003 or something like that and it still works pretty well and I was kind of blown away how optically good that thing is. It also seems to have some sort of image stabilization because the video it shoots seems very free of vibrations (I am not super steady handed). Of course it records to digital 240p or something but that's got a vibe all on it's own. And, by golly, it even has a touch screen!

Found a lightly used example of the camera on Ebay, base on your reviews brought it as a everyday carry camera. My usual camera is a Canon 5D IV, with the 35mm EF L II lens, which for me lately seems to get a lot of unwanted attention from stranger when I carry it around in public in the UK. The only downside of this camera is the XD picture card it uses, which is very expensive to buy, even a used one cost more than the camera itself.

had this camera from new. love it. still works great. the only problem was a couple of the three crappy little plastic latches that hold the battery door closed eventually broke off so the door didnt shut properly and only a matter of time before the final one broke off. the springs in the battery compartment were just too strong. a fix seemed impossible, so i didnt bother. but recently i had another look and managed to fix one of the latches with a small bit of wire bent at a right angle to substitute for one of the plastic tabs. now the door nearly closes properly again

Sharpening and NR are forms of selective gain and even today on the latest digital cameras their defaults can be too aggressive. It is not unusual to turn them down a notch to stop them introducing artefacts. This may be noticeable at low ISO which should be clean as a whistle and needs nothing fixed up.

You might want to look for an older Canon Powershot G series camera Specifically the G1-G6. The Kodak DC series is also great. I have a DC4800 thats awesome and similar to this. The Canons and Kodaks take CF cards which are much cheaper and easier to come by, if you don't already have some. If you are set on an Olympus Camedia, the C-5050 or 5060 are great cameras. @OneMonthTwoCameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I almost always process my images, including my jpegs. I happen to love post production so even when the images don't need it, I tend to play with some adjustments. With the C-740 I don't do a lot though because the files can't take a lot. All that said, I absolutely believe the CCD sensor has different color to a CMOS sensor. The greatest examples of that are the early Kodak CCD sensor such as those found in the Olympus dSLRs like the e-300, e-500 and e-1. They just come out of camera near perfect for my taste.
