I’m twisting my hair. Not added extra hair. This is a great protective style cuz I can keep it oiled moisturized and clean. And I have access to my scalp
I’m also a retired chronic braids wearer😂. I had to stop because I was literally deceiving myself that I was protecting my hair meanwhile my edges were thinning and my hair was chronically dry. My main issue though was that I did not have any confidence while wearing my natural hair at all. I was thought it was too short and just inconvenient. Now I definitely see things in a different light and I’m grateful for that ! I still don’t always love my kinky natural hair but I still wear it as proudly as I can .
Same. I'm wearing braids back-to-back for work convenience but don't like the way my hair is thinner and drier when I take them out. The only thing I can think to do is get some locs. But honestly from my research it seems like locs could still be high maintenance and expensive. I'm kinda tapped out on 4C hair ideas at the moment.
Me also ! I’m in the same phase - so deciding to just take it easy and give myself longer breaks between each protective style and take it from there …
The more she starts to see that you love her and acept her, she will start to look more and more beautiful to you. She will stand up and be glowing just for you, no matter the length, hang in there ❤
Hello ladies, we all have an interesting story. I am 48, I recieved my last perm at 17. I attended undergrad at a predominantly white university. A 3rd degree chemical burn from childhood traumatized me! My hair was stuck to my head in several large patches. I cried rivers of tears, it was so painful. My mother was so SORRY it happened. It was an accident. In undergrad there were no Black beauty shops in my vicinity. My parents did not allow me to have a car my first year so I could not travel to a nearby city. I wore my hair "out" for 20 years, b4 fancy products. All the new products are AWESOME. My undergrad degree is in Studio Art, my focus was 2-D design. So, my hair being all over my head was acceptable, never discussed. I was NAPPY, HAPPY, and PROUD of its height. Working as a freelance artist my hair was "acceptable". Years later I started teaching in the "inner city", a Black city. I was in HEAVEN. I wore suits and dresses with huge "uncombed" hair. I wore locs for 5 years. I cut those and returned to my afro. My Afro-Black students cheered me on. 😊 Then I tried braids one year and fell in love. I wore them both responsibly and irresponsibly for 6 years!!!! I just removed them detangled my now salt and pepper hair and FELL IN LOVE all over again. My afro is 7 inches tall!. My scalp is still mad tho. I have always had a lot of hair. It does not matter whether long or short, OUR HAIR IS GOLDEN. Your comfort is IMPORTANT. You are important. Remember that when you feel insecure in this often anti- Black world. I for one ADORE you. Black beauty can not be defined by any one thing. We are vastly beautiful. Thanks for listening. Have a brilliant and shiny day. ❤
Same exact story all the way up to age 17. That’s literally when I stopped relaxing my hair as well. But I didn’t know how to take care of my hair. Didn’t have a car or any black hair salons within walking distance. Unfortunately depression also led me to neglect my hair. Though my hair thick, luscious and long, I don’t feel I ever throughly appreciated it. Only highlighting that because I’m dealing with male pattern bald and my hair literally broke all off as well. Medically I searching as to why and how to reverse it. As it’s not even growing the way that it used too and I’m just 35. I want to believe it’s a lesson from God because I only finally learnt how to cornrow my own hair this year.
They do not help your hair to grow. Hair growth speed does not change cause they are braided, you only think cause the growth is hidden from you and then you get surprised when you come the braids out.
I've watched a ton of videos on protective styles and natural hair routines with no protective styles. I've come to realise that everyone's hair is unique. The key is understanding what your own hair can take while keeping it moisturised and REPEAT. If you do that, your hair will be healthy. I agree with this video!
I live in the desert. Protective styles don’t work for me. My hair needs hydration at least 3-4 times a week. I can’t keep my hair in a protective style for extended amounts of time. I shampoo and deep condition twice a week and co wash 2-3 times a week. Sometimes I will shampoo followed by deep conditioning and put my hair in chunky two strand twists. Let it dry and wear a twist out. When I wear a twist out, I have to spritz my hair with water, add conditioner and coat my hair with a thin layer of hair grease or oil before bed or my hair will be dry the next day. I never go longer than a few days without shampooing or co washing. That is the only way my hair will not break off; hydrating with water and conditioning constantly!!! Don’t allow your hair to dry out!!! It will break, fall out and shed.
My hair has been natural since 2010 but I still flat ironed it. I’ve been hiking for 3 years now, and flat ironing is fruitless- Once that sweat falls, it’s a wrap. So now I am learning what routine/products my hair needs as I back away from the heat. What has worked for you in that climate?
@@MindOfARecruiter I cannot keep a flat iron style in the desert. It’s so dry here flat ironing is not feasible and will cause my hair to dry out and break off. I’ll say this: even if you DID say you’ll never braid your hair again, you’re allowed to change your mind. We grown out here. We’re allowed to say one thing & do another. WITHOUT reporting it to anyone. SHOCKING! I know. Do what is best for you which may or may not change over time. Love this video. 🤍
I absolutely love my protective styles. I never ever wear wigs but I have a good diet,I KEEP my hair hydrated, and I don’t change my protective styles often. I keep each one at LEAST 3 months!! My hair in three years went from shaved completely bald to almost waist length!! My scalp isn’t sensitive nor is it dry…EVER!! I don’t wash my hair a lot but I do spray it down with water with conditioner in it several times a week!! I keep my ends trimmed and when I take my hair down it’s so moisturized it’s insane. I think a lot of ppl put in a protective style and leave their hair alone… you still have to maintain its health protective style or not! Also my grand daughter has hair past her bottom and I’m the one who manages it. But to each his own💪🏽… also,I use oils,as well as home made moisturizers!! I wear crochet styles and braids but 95% of the time I wear crochet styles. I’ve never had thin edges nor does my grand daughter! Many shorts on her hair on my channel 🫶🏽
I use this exact same method!! Crochet styles about 80% wigs 20% . I moisturize with Dro gro oil & conditioner mixed with water. Exercise & drink plenty water. Shaved to almost bra strap in 3 years. 💁🏾♀️
That's normal hair growth, hair will continue to grow from your scalp regardless, it has nothing to do with protective style. It's just that you see the growth because it's hidden away. Having said that it's healthy and hygienic to wash your scalp few times a week because we do sweat and sebum will build up.
Thanks to my autism (which loves routines) and my ADHD (which gets bored easily) I've had to implement a sort of rotation system. Every style usually lasts around 2-4 weeks. Wash n go - 2 weeks Mini twists - 4 weeks (with washes, etc in between) Twist out - 1 week REPEAT. Any styles during those times are very low manipulation. During Wash n go cycle, I'm rocking the afro, puff, 2 puff, clawclip. I big chopped over 2 years ago and my hair has gone from 1cm and is now shoulderlength. It's the happiest and healthiest it's ever been. Rotation, balance, consistency, patience and love is the most important factors. Your hair sits right above your brain, your third eye. I notice a very clear difference in my whole state of being when that cancerous synthetic itchy burning hair is in my scalp. I feel that Chakra up there blocked like buttery arteries. I guess my only hope for all my other type 4 sisters out there is that they are safe. There are so many other things out there killing black woman, I don't want us to keep contributing to our own demise amd downfall with all these harmful products which aren't even our fault. Do what is best for your lifestyle but try your best to make sure that it isn't damaging your health or hair too much in the process. Protect your hair, protect your crown, protect your brain❤️
I think braids are protective as long as they're installed correctly. They can't be too big, too small or too tight. They can't be left in too long. I think 4-6 weeks is the recommended amount of time to leave them in. They should be washed while they are in. Soak them while in the shower. My stylist offers braid maintenance services. Wash, condition and restyling without taking the braids down. Maybe yours does too. The style isn't the problem. It is lack of hair care maintenance is the problem. Just like weaves. The hair underneath has to be maintained. If someone chooses expensive hairstyles they should also factor in the maintenance cost of the style as well if they want to keep wearing it, unless healthy hair is not the goal. As for the scalp issue, perhaps there's an actual problem that needs to be addressed. Have you been seen by a trichologist or dermatologist to make sure there isn't anything bigger going on? Maybe a hairstylist can recommend a DIY remedy for the scalp. Something that can be done while your hair is still in braids. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Back to back braids helped me after I lost large sections of hair after anemia. About a year of it really got me back in track. But I was forced to stop when salons closed during 2020. But I was good by then. My hair was in a much better shape. I now notice that my hair does better overall without braid extensions, especially my edges. But I'm so happy I had braids as an option to help me get over that hump. Use braids as you need them. Treat them as a tool or layover.
I've graduated 🎓. I started doing wash & go's this past winter & I was under the sink at least 3/4 times a week. I noticed right away that my hair no longer looked dry = LowP 👋🏿. So, I moved from lowP to medium porosity = Moisture Training is my thing now. I wear twists & hydrate several times a week & 🔒 with oils & butters. I'm collar bone now, arm pit next ⏳. I've never been a fan of faux hair so no issues there, my coils are oxygen rich😊. Thanks for sharing
Cornrows with added hair have destroyed a lot of people's hair as well. I think it all comes down with how ANY style is done. Is it tight, is it pulling, is it heavy, are we ignoring our hair etc....
Kudos to you Sis, and thank you for your honesty!!! I love that you said that we can change our mind! We can still be flexible and tell the truth about what’s happening. Balance is key. Blessings to you and your growing family. ❤
Have you tried spraying rosemary and clove infused water on your braids then applying glycerin on the braids (as best as you can)? I’ve seen it work for some who don’t wash their hair every week and their hair stays hydrated. They do this every few days or so, so the hair doesn’t have a chance to dry out. For scalp, I use ORS coconut oil hair and scalp “grease”. Otherwise, itchy scalp.
I personally consider braids a protective style, my hair thrives in them plus i moisturise as well. I just dont keep them on for too long. If you understand the definition of the word "protect" then braids fall under this category because my hair is not exposed shrinkage and any kind manipulation. Its stuck in those braids until i take them off meaning no combing, no styling and no shrinkage, so yes, they are "protective".
I agree. Too much noise in the natural community about what you should and shouldn’t do. Do what works best for you. Protective styles are what it says, protects the hair, less manipulation more retention.
I washed my hair yesterday, and last night I was just not in the mood to style it 😅, just I put it in some large braids (just my hair) & best believe I'm pinning them up to go to my dental appt tomorrow. Cause yep 'easy living' 😊
Someone is trying to shake the table again. Lol but my hair is a lot healthier in protective styles. Its also easier. I can get up and go. I do agree that i have left my braids in longer than i should which is not good.
Same! Wash and goes will have my hair dry and eventually bald😂 cornrows with my natural seems to work better. I guess everyones hair has different needs
I’m a protective style person or a person who prefer a style to protecting the hair growing out of my scalp. Chemicals or sew-ins are styles of the past. When you know better, you strive to do better. I will do a wig from temple to time because I can take it off daily. Yes, I’m protecting my crown. 😅😊
This is such a good topic and conversation! I'm definitely here for this. Thank you for putting me on to the research about kanekelon hair causing cancer. I, for one, will be avoiding that hair from now on especially since it irritates my skin anyways. Human braiding hair is more expensive but at least it's not itchy and full of cancer-causing materials. Great video btw!!!
These braiders that want your hair bone straight, no product, and then add edge control to each little section are doing our hair a disservice. When i do extensions, i do it myself and add extra moisture to my kinky hair before i braid it up. I dont keep it in past 3-4 weeks and my hair is always moisturized when i remove the braids. I rather have healthy hair over perfectly laid hair.
Hi. My daughter loves getting her hair braided by the African Braiders and they do same, they actually have a salon. They say come as you are. They will wash, blow dry, and braid. When she gets home, she adds AMLA oil to hair and Indian Hemp pomade to her scalp! Her braids last for about 2-3 months! Her hair is Flourishing!❤💯❤️🥰🥰💯💯💯💯
All that edge control causes so much flaking and dandruff in my scalp. Most stylists put it directly on the scalp and it just can’t handle that. It’s left me not able to get these braided styles because I can’t find an alternative to edge control
Great video! ❤Interesting, what’s key is that you started taking better and more consistent care of your hair. Moisture more often since you’re washing it more. ❤
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! for saying that it's not what you're doing on the outside, but what's going on inside that's causing the hair to grow or not...I have always had hair that grows like a weed my whole life, except the time I developed severe stomach issues and wasn't absorbing minerals or nutrients..my hair became dry, brittle, and thin..I got my gut in better health and now it's back growing and healthy. My sister, whose hair never grew, even as a child never believed me when I told her that it's something going on internally. Now, at 50 yrs old, she starts managing her diabetes better, and got off certain meds and upon her doctor's advice, started taking iron, her hair is growing like a weed...I'm not trying to diagnose anyone, but if your hair isn't doing what your hair should do, get checked out. Usually it's something that can easily be fixed such as more of a certain mineral or vitamin...just need to find what specific vitamin or mineral
The hair detox got a bad rep, but it taught me a lot. I learned that my hair doesn’t like raw oils and butters. I can use products that have butters and oils just not in the first five ingredients. I think too many people were over clarifying their hair.
There is much more to it than just over clarifying and some of the women/stylists has spoken on it. Healthy hair truly comes down to your overall approach to hair care vs a single ingredient.
@@GodLOVES_you1437 I don’t moisturize my hair, I wash, condition then style. Either a wash and go, or a twist out using gel or foam styler. Once my hair starts to dry out a little after day 4 or five. I repeat the process.
For the most part I can agree with the statement that hair growth has majority to do with what's going on internally; but from my own experience I have seen how topical application also helps. But for the most part internal health is where hair growth stems
I dont think hair really works like that unless if you want breakage, you've got to take care of your hair both inside and out. Neglecting your hair on the outside just because you eat all the right staff for hair growth will not help you with anything unless if you have straight or type 1 hair. Curly hair esp type 4 shrinks and is prone to breakage so it's very important to take care of it on the outside
I just found your channel and I am learning so much. Ive been doing my daughter's hair in braids back to back ever since she was a baby. She is 16 now. I've also seen the videos abt the hair causing cancer so we both planned to stop and just work with her natural hair. Her hair seemed like it had stopped growing. We are both starting from scratch once I take down her crochet. I started cutting my hair in fades because I noticed I had started having bald spots ever so often, but now that I am restarting my hair care we will see how it goes.
Put grease, cream or oil when you have washed your hair and it is dry not dump or dripping. It is just skin that you have to moisturise as you moisturise your face after washing it.
Exactly. I spritz my hair when I wear braids. And I oil them. I wear braids from time to time because it gives me a break. I have two daughters with really thick, one midback the other just shy of waist lengtht 4b-4c hair. So spraying my and their hair keeps it from breaking. Our hair is water thirsty.
I grew up having braids back to back but cut down on protective styles solely because of the price LOL. When I went back to protective styles I realized how much maintenance it was to keep my hair healthy under braids. Now I only braid my hair for special occasions.
I hope this helps with the CONFUSION that’s is NOOILSNOBUTTER😭 that I’ve learn. The no oil and butter means use creams instead RAW oils and butter . Creams are INFUSED with oil and butters , same with our shampoo and conditioner. And if you need or want a topical product for your scalp MILK scalp serum is the best to go. I use the Ordinary HA scalp serum it’s so good , it’s lightweight so it allow your scalps pores to breathe but also allow it to have the space to produce it own oils . Because our scalp produce its own oils. That why so many people who have a lot of flakes problem comes from. they’re scalp is already producing a lot of oil already and adding more oil basically congest your scalp and flakes are the result of that . The best thing a dermatologist told me was treat the skin on your scalp as the skin on your face because it the same skin . So less is more , and the products that we use on our face like hyaluronic acid , salicylic acid are very beneficial to scalp care. And also using oils like an ointment so say you did a styles to tight and you have a sore spot that is when oil comes to play . Only apply it when needed
I believe you about stress and hair, but my son got a divorce just after serving in the military and his hair started growing longer and longer while the divorce process was going. I started twisting his hair and its still long. Now his hair is the same length as mine (mid back) and my hair was longer than his in the beginning. In this case stress didn't affect his hair. Thank God for it.
I've always done braids and consider them a protective style. My hair thrives and grows...also have to consider taking care of your hair underneath like washes, oil, grease, etc. Plus, I'm in the military and I hardly have time for natural styles lol
I recently stopped using synthetic hair, oils and went back to the basics. I mean the bare minimum. I’ve been rocking micros with my own hair since April. I wash my hair with them. I moisturize them, grease my scalp and just redo them one by one with they get to frizzy. It’s been working thus far and it’s low maintenance. Nothing pulling and tugging my hair and my scalp is only itchy when it needs to be washed.
Growing up braids did protect and grow our hair. I believe this new wave of “knotless” is the problem and that hair gel folks be using. Regular boxed braids had my hair as a child growing. Basic pro style and blue magic. Just my opinion.
As with everything, moderation and specificity is key. Try CURLS “Hair Under There ” oil or Design Essentials Scalp Care “Anti-Itch” oil for your protective styles. Certain oils may irritate your scalp causing inflammation and flakiness. Any scalp treatment with tea tree oil is a good start because it is a natural antibacterial. I LOVE your braids in this video! I wish I knew how to do that. Currently learning how to braid my own hair.
African Royale braid spray was good back in the day. Softee Aloe Vera gel curl activator kept cornrows moisturized and using a silk scarf kept it looking neat. Thanks for sharing. (Gen 1:27-30; Rev 21:3-6) 👏🏾🙏🏾💜💐😀🎉
I don’t know why everyone forgot about braid spray!! Braids back then weren’t nearly so destructive to the hair because we were advised to use braid spray often. At least the hair stayed with some moisture, if nothing else.
Yes!! Weekly washes Truly hydrates!! I start doing this because I workout 🏋️♀️ everyday, so I sweat more, so I a am actually I washing my hair every 4 days!! Great tutorial!❤❤🥰💯🥰💯🥰💯❤️❤️❤️
I never wore a "protective" style. I've had block braids, styled cornrows, hair pulled back styled into a bun. Hairstyles I like to wear, it's not protecting anything, heat, weather elements, regular comb & brushing.... But I do use heat protection when I use straighteners/curling wands.
If you do an oil treatment I've heard your supposed to wash it out with shampoo in about 2hrs - 24hrs. Leaving oil in your hair without washing it out can actually also cause scalp irratation. It sounds counter - inntutive but its a great way to have your hair shinner and softer without flaking
Thank u it’s so true protective styles r not honestly protective cause it causes such an uncontrollable itch i mean that just drives u crazy plus ur hair can still break off from being dry and brittle from the ends. I wore braids, twists, cornrows and crochet styles for years plus it was easy for work but it is extremely expensive and it didn’t make my hair grow any faster but it sure did thin out my edges and I can’t seem to grow them back.
Yeah When I would take my wig off I would always forget/feel inadequate about how to care for my hair and what products and techniques really work for me. So I vowed to learn my hair. As a result I wore my hair out a good chunk of 2023 and 2024 and I feel so much more confident. I am now back to wigs but plan to wear it out again in August but I am washing every two weeks now so that’s an improvement
Girl, I forgot about you. I was just about subscribe and then I realized I’m already subscribed. You are dishing out some truth. The braids are not the way. I had box braids for less than a month and the way my scalp was revolting against me. As soon as I took them down and did my co wash, everything was fine. It’s not the chemicals in the hair. It dirt, plain and simple. If you go for a run and then don’t wash that sweat of immediately, what happens? I know I itch like crazy. It’s the dirt.
I retain the most with wash n go styles. I went through a knotless braids phase and my hair thinned so much. It depends on the style, hair type and maintenance. I think just babying your hair is the best.
I'm old enough to have noticed that these styles costing hundreds and always adding fake hair, that would have been for special occasions, were suddenly being sold as protective to make black people spend more money, and start buying a million products when some oil and a flat iron used to get our hair done at home for free. They're not protective in any sense. Imho
Thank you for doing this video been saying this for years ppl don't believe you. I hate wearing braid i just press my hair twice a month and wash twice a month use oils butters and my hair grows a lot. Never had a perm im glad my mom taught me this take care of your body mind and hair is key consistency. I use coco butter kokum butter mango butter Shea butter batana oil castor oil and rosemary arr my favorites. I havent had dandruffs or itchy scalp. I also like nettle oil shampoo. I also use Indian ayurvedic oils in my head alma oils and they shampoos are great black seed oil shampoo.
You are saying exactly what Dickey here on TH-cam says. He actually suggests we wet our hair wayyyyyyyy more than we do. He said if you can’t wet it every day you wanna put a rich leave-in and oil on the hair after shampooing and blow dry these into the hair THEN go into the protective style and it’ll maintain the moisture for a bit
Question: what did you do during the week to keep your scalp moisturized, since you stopped oiling it? I see persons talking about dry brushing and other methods to spread sebum. I'm trying to move away from oiling my scalp but my environment is so dry 🫠
Once u stop using oils u'll be surprised how ones hair stays moisturized throughout the week! I do dry brushing a bunch! I've stopped w oils for a year now! I just use water and maybe a Lil shampoo with no conditioners. My scalp is clean and healthy. My hair has thickened up and my length is crazy! I do not braid my hair, I do not wear wigs or weaves just my hair! My hair is soo happy and I love my hair😊❤.
@@nichelleloh6659 thanks a bunch. But how do you wear your hair during the week? I have bra strap length, 4C, coarse stands, highly dense, medium porosity hair.
That's one of the things about my hair that I hated: The Dryness. But not anymore. I braid my hair with my own hair. ( big plaits) No dryness when I started to deep condition and washed my hair twice a week with plaits and used flaxseed gel to seal everything in. I do it all with big plaits. The only thing is.....I must ensure the conditioner is liquid enough to get in the plaits and ensure I rinse it out 3-4xs with water.
Whenever I have braids, I make rosemry and mint water and spritz it on my hair twice or thrice a week, so I can moisturise my scalp and hair. Braids are very convenient
Sweets, you're 💯 %right. Damn. I just stopped protective styling bc my scalp was like give me a break 🙃. Also between the gel, extension hair, and needing to blow dry my hair before the install, my strands were looking and feeling dry. How was I supposed to moisturize during the week if my strands were in prison 🤔? I had fun tho and my protective style lineup was on point. However, I can feel the difference and sensitivity that my scalp has now. She is thriving and happy now that I done repented and changed my ways. I might backslide tho every now and then cuz... u know
I only wear french braids with added hair. They're about the size of my finger's. I don't wash my hair during the time they're in. I cleanse my scalp with witch hazel. If I was to wash my hair it was be extremely matted at the root when taking them down. I saturate the braids with oil and blow dry to get the matted hair out with a bobby pin and rat tail comb for the root which is my growth. I spray with moisturizer and oil every other day while they're in. I don't have any hair issues from the braid's. It will be several weeks or months before I get it braided again.
What do people mean by protective styles because i used to wear weave and it used to rip out my hair so since I stopped using it and just doing my hair that I was born with and putting them in braids don’t seem like it’s being protected from the sun or cold air it still was breaking. But since I’ve been using my grease I made for my hair, my ends has not broken off and still learning how to tuck in my ends. But what does it mean when people say protective styles?
TBH there is no such thing as a protective style, it is just a style. If you are properly caring for your hair despite the style it is in then it is fine.
I’m glad to hear this because some of these folks out here will have you scared to wear your hair out. I’ve always done wash and go’s and wearing my hair out and it still grows. And I wore so many wigs during the pandemic that I can’t stand even the thought of a wig on my head.
It's only protective if you're actually taking care of the hair. Braiding hair that hasn't been deep conditioned, trimmed or given a break is problematic. Also leaving the styles in for more than 6 weeks is a dangerous game. I prefer to do individual crochet braids and twists. It takes a lot of tension off of my scalp. Lastly never ever go directly from one style to the next. The scalp needs like two weeks to recover from traditional "protective styling"
I actually stopped doing full box braids years ago and it changed my hair tremendously. My go-to now is thicker twists with loose marley hair that matches my texture. It's way less time consuming, I spray/moisturize twice a day and I'm able to wash weekly. I redo the twists individually bi-weekly (unravel, gently detangle, pre-poo scalp, spray/moisturize strands) and wash my scalp after. After 2mo I remove to wash my hair normally, let it air dry in twist and repeat. I've experienced very little hair fall, it feels strong w/ no breakage. I'm always amazed every time I wash, my hair retained at least 3in over the past 2mos! We all do whatever works best for us ❤
I wore braids back to back and my hair was damaged looking like I had heat damaged. So I think when it comes to protective styles like braids, I think they’re fine but not as back to back styles. Like maybe just a few times a year
People are still insecure about wearing out their real hair,. It’s not about protective styles, it’s just doing a hairstyle👀 cornrows=hair styles, braids =hairstyles. People have over thought this process. Just braid your hair when you don’t want to do your hair every day. 🙄. What you put in your body matters the most. What you put on your hair makes a difference. Plus, you figured out what works for you. BINGO… that’s the key. Everyone should have their own journey to what works for them✅
When it comes to oils and butters I don't put them on my scalp, because I produce a lot of oil naturally. I put the oils halfway down and comb them to distribute them to the ends. Butters only ever go on my ends.
I gotta say that: I am from Brazil. I used to live in USA for many years. My American girlfriends coudnt understand how come I didnt use any protective hairstyles and I couldnt why they had to. Its so annoying to have your hair cover for weeks sometimes more than a month to protect it (from what? life? weather?) Anyway I showed for some of them to keep their scalp always clean in the hair moisturized and just let it be! Enjoy what you have!
Never wear braids because I never thought of it as a protective style. I workout a lot and my hair will break off from washing it on a weekly basis so I wear twist. This allows me to take care of my hair and scalp in the way that helps it to thrive. My hair growth have always been good! Never needed oils/butters but scalp naturally moisturizes my hair. Do not think that any or all of us are the same as regards protective styles! Many of my friends and familyls hair have grown waist length with wearing protective styles. All are different!
I don't do anything to it. I just try to wash my hair on a weekly basis. When I stretch my hair and don't wash (such as when I am in a protective style, it will start to get flaky over time).
@@NaturallyVailah it started the same way for me once I ditch oiling. It’s like you have to go through that detox period where your own sebum takes over. Then it go better and I can go a full week and be fine
I'm not sure if braids are just not well suited for my hair type I have a combination of 3B/3C curls and love braided styles. After the first year of wearing them, my hair started to go in the direction of 4A and was brittle, extremely dry, and difficult to manage. I had to cut all the growth that happened in that year off. I guess the "protective styles" aren't a style for everyone and well the name protective makes you believe otherwise. I'm sure some people have healthier hair because of it e.g. my sister but it literally just caused mine to constantly split and start to fall out.
Just recently decided to stop back to back braids and I’m excited seeing results already. Had to face the hard truth that my attachment to “protective styles” wasn’t protecting nothing, I was just lazy 😩🤣
I’m twisting my hair. Not added extra hair. This is a great protective style cuz I can keep it oiled moisturized and clean. And I have access to my scalp
Me with mini braids without added synthetic hair!
Me too.

Working as a freelance artist my hair was
"acceptable".

I braid my hair with only my natural hair and it’s been helping my hair to grow, I do it myself because others braid too tight
I notice since I've started doing my own hairstyles, my hair is pleased. I also have some more change in my pocket too.

@@sherrisolomon8673 yes I went to a braider
@@FF-by6cigirl clearly it’s helping them retain there length. That’s what a protective style should do
Thanks to my autism (which loves routines) and my ADHD (which gets bored easily) I've had to implement a sort of rotation system. Every style usually lasts around 2-4 weeks.
Wash n go - 2 weeks
Mini twists - 4 weeks (with washes, etc in between)
Twist out - 1 week
REPEAT.

Braids are not protective. They are just styles. Cornrows are the only braids that truly give your hair a break and can be considered protective.
That is Ur opinion
Cornrows with added hair have destroyed a lot of people's hair as well. I think it all comes down with how ANY style is done. Is it tight, is it pulling, is it heavy, are we ignoring our hair etc....
More like they break ur hair off and it's not a protective style if it breaks off one's hair!
they are for me, my hair grows nice and healthy. as usual... everyone is different.
Hair doesn't need a break. It's not a living organism. What is it taking a break from? Maybe the wearer needs a break though.
You can do braids with your natural hair.
I washed my hair yesterday, and last night I was just not in the mood to style it 😅, just I put it in some large braids (just my hair) & best believe I'm pinning them up to go to my dental appt tomorrow. Cause yep 'easy living' 😊

You do what’s best for you…. You’ve been doing this for years you got this…Periodt 😊
It’s left me not able to get these braided styles because I can’t find an alternative to edge control
same! synthetic hair never bothered me
You still have to add moisture no matter what style your hair is . Dry and brittle hair leads to breakage
Great video! ❤Interesting, what’s key is that you started taking better and more consistent care of your hair. Moisture more often since you’re washing it more. ❤
Works for me,but I get your point
I believe in taking a two week "break". Then, I do wash and goes for about two weeks or flat twist.
So if your hair doesn’t like butters/oils, what moisturizing products work for you?
@@GodLOVES_you1437
The operative word is 'raw'.
@@GodLOVES_you1437 I don’t moisturize my hair, I wash, condition then style. Either a wash and go, or a twist out using gel or foam styler. Once my hair starts to dry out a little after day 4 or five. I repeat the process.

I’ve been wearing wash and gos more and washing my hair 2 times a week, I have seen a flake since 😉 no need for dandruff shampoo
For the most part I can agree with the statement that hair growth has majority to do with what's going on internally; but from my own experience I have seen how topical application also helps. But for the most part internal health is where hair growth stems
Length retention is the part that's the struggle.
Our hair is water thirsty.
it makes my scalp smell and get dirt faster.. I only put oil when needed.. I like the pattern mist spray & I put it on after it's styled.

I chose protective styles due to laziness. Now I’m doing better with trying to take care of my hair.
Or maybe in his case, someone one’s daughter was stressing him out and his hair flourished once he let her go 😅

I didn't know having a baby makes you lose your edges. That explains a lot. :S I noticed I've lost some hair recently as well.
I retain the most with wash n go styles. I went through a knotless braids phase and my hair thinned so much. It depends on the style, hair type and maintenance. I think just babying your hair is the best.

I went back to my weekly wash, grease, blow dry, press (but flat iron) and my hair is THRIVING
Glad you found a routine that works
I'm old enough to have noticed that these styles costing hundreds and always adding fake hair, that would have been for special occasions, were suddenly being sold as protective to make black people spend more money, and start buying a million products when some oil and a flat iron used to get our hair done at home for free. They're not protective in any sense. Imho

Maybe a steam hood with spray moisturizer would help.
Great video!
Question: what did you do during the week to keep your scalp moisturized, since you stopped oiling it? I see persons talking about dry brushing and other methods to spread sebum. I'm trying to move away from oiling my scalp but my environment is so dry 🫠
Have you considered using glycerin?

@@nichelleloh6659 thanks a bunch. But how do you wear your hair during the week? I have bra strap length, 4C, coarse stands, highly dense, medium porosity hair.
That's one of the things about my hair that I hated: The Dryness.
But not anymore.
I braid my hair with my own hair. ( big plaits)
No dryness when I started to deep condition and washed my hair twice a week with plaits and used flaxseed gel to seal everything in.
I like the braid pattern 😊
Thanks for sharing - yeah I am definitely done with wigs🫣
Like maybe just a few times a year
Can you please tell me where you got your frames? They are beautiful!
Wow beautiful style
Hi, since I braid my hair with wool, i can really enjoy the results.
I hear wool is drying, is it not?
Thank you for the video and happy pregnancy.
Love this style also where are frames from?
What scalp nurishment did you use aside from oils?
I notice my hair grew tremendously and faster when I just washed it every two weeks, moisturized and oiled, less blow dry, and wore wigs.
So what exactly do you do to your scalp to make it healthy, if oiling is out of it?
I don't do anything to it. I just try to wash my hair on a weekly basis. When I stretch my hair and don't wash (such as when I am in a protective style, it will start to get flaky over time).
@@JennJackson okay.. well my scalp starts to itch and flake on the 2nd day after wash
@@NaturallyVailah it started the same way for me once I ditch oiling. It’s like you have to go through that detox period where your own sebum takes over. Then it go better and I can go a full week and be fine
@@JennJackson alright.. I'll try that. Thank you.
Amazing! Yesss to alll of thissss
i definitely agree with the curl chat being a general term but the natural hair community and division are...5&6😂
I'm not sure if braids are just not well suited for my hair type I have a combination of 3B/3C curls and love braided styles.
Good video! Nice to see you 😊
Just recently decided to stop back to back braids and I’m excited seeing results already. Had to face the hard truth that my attachment to “protective styles” wasn’t protecting nothing, I was just lazy 😩🤣
It’s so hard for us to admit that hard truth but I am glad you are doing what works for you
