The Turle Knot is a knot used for tying a fly to a leader. It is named after Major William Greer Turle, an English angler who popularized the knot but did not claim to have invented it.

Yes Simon, this method of tying the turle knot is extremely effective. Nice straight connection, when tied correctly, with almost 100 per cent strength.

Does it matter if you go up or down thru the eye in relation to the hook?

Yes, you would do opposite for down and up facing hook eyes. As he said, you want the leader to come out in line with the flies body.

Another tip. If the fly is to be fished wet, then wet it. This slicks down the hackle etc. and makes it easier to control it and keep it out of the loop.

Early momnofilament leaders did not have near the knot strength of modern lines...the turle knot did not have the strength needed,
    therefore I never used it.
