We are having issues with sticky saliva being a source of waking up choking during the night. Sitting foreward was suggested when you are eating. Sitting at the table is harder than walking around and eating. A child’s “sippy cup” seems to be helpful and prevents spills. We have one that you press you teeth into to release fluid and that worked well in bed and the drinking bottles with a straw inside the bottle are helpful but they tend to get mold in the snout so you need one you can take apart and wash or put in bleach or hydrogen peroxide to clean it and a straw and baby brush will clean it.
Sitting up is not always enough some time you have to sit forward of the 90 degree angle so food and liquid go do right. You and also breath in a page particular and have it go down the wrong way with fluid and you can find yourself. Choking on saliva in the middle of the night is scary but sleeping on you side help stop it most of the time.

Sounds like an ordeal. Most definitely, the person needs to be forward and upright...like 120 degrees to prevent going down "the wrong pipe". Why is the mucus thick? Is it possible to consider a muculytic like mucinex, use a humidifier? Also, sleep in semi fowlers position. Hope this helps.

My mother coughs after eating and drinking . She had pneumonia but they don’t know she has dementia as she fools everyone. She’s with me now and I see and hear it and it’s very concerning because in her mind she thinks it’s post nasal drip . Refuses a swallow test and any other tests . Thank you for this video . I myself was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus but I don’t have a problem swallowing but I am on medication for the reflux.

Hello Kristin. Yes, she really needs that swallow test, unfortunately, and it doesn't take much to do as it is not invasive. Have you done a mini mental state exam on your mom? I'm not sure she would cooperate but would give you a score to help you determine if there is demand and the degree of it. You can download the form online. Oh and please subscribe!!

She refuses everything and her primary told me something bad will happen and that’s when I can say and do something. For now it’s her right to refuse . It’s hard that I have to wait but she knows her rights and I can’t physically force her . I did my research and believe she’s at stage 6 dementia

Hi there i live in Canada, Ontario and my dad of 81 years old and he has COPD, and has had a mini T.I.A. stroke and was diagnosed 2 weeks ago of having aspiration pneumonia and we were told to take Prednisone & amoxcillan and he just finished both ... we are having an issue of what foods he can eat ... we were told he has to be on a soft liquid diet ... hospital gave us a list but it was not helpful can u send me a list of foods he should be eating and how much he should be eating of it ,,, he doesn't get full from all liquid diet ,,, any links u can send me of foods he can eat? he wants to eat heavier foods and is not full .... its a lil frustrated for me & my wife cause we need to be giving him the right foods and he craves the heavy foods ...

I seem to be suffering from aspiration pneumonia more frequently having had several bouts of it just this evening alone. I'm wondering if I should ask to have a PEG tube put in as a means of bypassing the throat altogether to prevent this from happening because right now I'm even aspirating on saliva at this point?
