    Curse of the Black Pearl is one of those truly rare things - an absolutely perfect movie. It hits on every single level. The script is razor sharp, the casting is inspired, the acting is even more so, the score is all-time iconic, the costume/set/effects design is flawless, the tone is spot on, and it's edited and directed with a pop-song-esque snappiness that keeps you completely glued. It functions perfectly as a standalone film, while also naturally leading into sequels. It's completely genre-defining to the point where no other film IP has even TRIED to imitate it. The sequels aren't bad by any means, but there was no way they could ever hope to match this one.

    • @sharkdentures3247

      Agreed.
      Even if someone were to criticize it as having "over-the-top" acting at times, (which it DOES), it is INTENTIONALLY "over-the-top" in a way that WORKS! (and even makes the movie BETTER & more "fun")
      Sort of like the exaggerated action moments does at times.
      It is impossible NOT to love Depp in this role. (HE is the reason this movie gets dialed up to 11. IMO.)

      Legit he doesn't really do much wrong in the movie. He is a commodore, of course he won't listen to a random blacksmith when planning the rescue. And of course he will detest Jack, pirates are actual scum of the earth, they rape, pillage, steal and kill. Nothing wrong with pursuing Elisabeth either, he seems to genuinely like her. the genius levels of the script are absolutely insane in this one. Besides the obvious smart writing (within three minutes of Elizabeth, Will and her dad, you know literally everything you need to know about any of them). My fav is the final escape. When Jack trips and falls over the edge.
    It was the only way out. We are told at the beginning there are rocks down there and it's a miracle Elizabeth missed them.
    We are shown Jack is an excellent diver. He could have Olympic dove that bish. But he did exactly what Elizabeth did. Fell uncontrollably because he knew it is safe that way.

      @redjaredits ปีที่แล้ว +42

      I've actually never taken that scene that way but I like you analysis. I have always seen it as a subversion of the classic "rule of threes". Two other times in the film we see Jack dive perfectly and I believe his intention was to dive from the wall, but instead his clumsiness takes over and he falls as a comedic gag. Jack has the power of luck and is able to survive the fall much like Elizabeth did in a perfect cyclical moment for the film. I do agree with you however that he was calculating his escape I just don't believe that he intended to fall uncontrollably.

    • @tacofop600
      @tacofop600 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@redjaredits I agree with your interpretation. I've seen at least one other person recently make the same argument that Jack supposedly tripped on purpose for some reason, but it just seems like an odd thing to try to morph into a specifically intentional act by Jack. He's an extremely cunning character, but he's not totally infallible with every little thing he does. He has his share of stumbles (figuratively and literally) throughout the movies, like when he gets captured due to being bashed on the back of the head by a drunkard, for one example. And it's not like it takes anything away from his overall cunning just because he tripped; he was still certainly about to dive off intentionally.
      The reason the trip over the wall is in there is because it's a great and funny piece of writing, for the reasons you pointed out, and additionally, because he already said his full line about, "This is the day..." once before in the movie. So the stronger application than just saying the line again and kind of over-playing it is to do what they did and have him cut off mid-sentence. The audience remembers the line, so they still feel the meaning of it, but it becomes a great and memorable moment of comic relief in its own right.
      With all that said, it basically works either way, so whichever way the viewer interprets it is all good by me.

    Jack's walk. Yes it is like Bellatrix, and fittingly enough Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are fairly regularly cast in the same films, and while the film implies it's because he went mad on the desert island, that may not actually be the case, on ships of the era it's quite often the case that the tide rocks it from side-to-side and forwards and backwards, meaning the deck under your feet is constantly changing its incline and direction, Jack's admittedly odd style is consistent with walking on a sailing ship, he's so used to living on a ship on the open seas, that he's forgotten how to walk normally on land.

      Truly should be regarded as one of the best trilogies of all time along with the Star Wars, LotR, The Dark Knight etc. The villains are great, the three main characters are very well written, the plots are incredible, the choreographies are really well made, it has heart, fun lines and jokes at the right moments, dark themes at the right moments as well (back when Disney could make a kids movie with dark themes), not everything is spoon fed to you and you are allowed to think without the characters saying everything that is going on or that they are feeling and the dialogue is great.

    you're actually spot on about pirate stories before VS after POTC. There are some very old pirate movies that were serious, but by and large the genre had long since devolved into comedy and then died out. POTC was the first serious pirate movie in a LONG time, and they did it EXTREMELY well. It revived the genre. Without POTC, there would have been no Black Sails, and no Our Flag Means Death.

Best example of her not being stupid, third film when they call on The Pirate Code, even she can tell someone doing that is a big deal and that it's not only sacred but you don't do it unless you mean absolute business. We decided to go see Pirates that night because it was my special day even though everyone was tired and I didn’t want to wait till we get back to Dallas lol Seeing all that history and then watching this spectacular fantasy period piece was so magical to me. No one in my family regretted seeing it! I adore the main trilogy. It was such an epic adventure.
    Also the reason why Jack and the monkey turned into skeletons at the end was because, as Barbosa explained to Elizabeth during their dinner, the treasure was cursed. If you took a coin from the treasure, then you'd become cursed to become like an undead and look like a monster under the moonlight. Jack Sparrow took a coin while talking to Barbosa and hid it so that he wouldn't die fighting Barbosa, giving Will and Elizabeth enough time to prepare their coin to break the curse and end everything. After the coins were all returned, everyone was turned back into mortals - even the monkey. However, the monkey also took a coin at the credit scene, making him immortal once more. The curse would restart and only be stopped if the monkey ever returned the coin and repaid with blood.

      Yeah, the rest are only really "bad" when directly compared to this one because of just how good this one is. It's always hard to match an original idea especially as it was originally envisioned as a stand-alone movie, with the the sequels rectonning certain aspects, and becoming a bit convoluted in terms of the larger plot (especially the 3rd), but just looking at each individually they're all just great adventure movies.

    A friend of one of my nieces works in the film industry. When the first two Pirates of the Caribbean movies were made she was head of the filming locations department. She'd go and negotiate for sites and get all the needed permits and any needed housing. She got to stay and watch the filming. One of the things they had was a very large luxury yacht and whenever there were scenes filmed on ships the yacht wasn't far away off camera. When actors weren't in scenes they'd be brought to the yacht. It was loaded with fancy foods and everything that was needed and when not filming it was used as a party boat. She really enjoyed working on the first two Pirates movies, but then she got a better job offered to her, what I do not remember, so she wasn't part of the ones that followed.

It either wanted to be undead or it took it again out of greed.
    -Everytime someone takes any of those aztec cursed coins from the source where they belong, those will be under the curse until the same proceedure of breaking the curse happens again. It wasn't broken until many years later by Will because EVERYONE that took the coins had to not only return them but also give a bit of blood and since Bootstrap was already "dead" by then Will was the last one to use his blood because Bills blood runs in Wills. They also spent alot of time to finding every single one of those coins again because they spent them as any money before feeling the effects of the curse and becoming aware of it.

There's an hour long analysis of the film scene by scene, talking about how every single scene is doing multiple things at once. Giving you spoken story as well as visual story and background, setting up characters without a word spoken. Shot framing, action sequences that further the story and aren't JUST action. It's truly a brilliant movie that is also a hell of a fun time. And was pretty dark for Disney, especially at the time it came out.

    Kiera Knightley's acting at 18:48 is simply amazing. I genuinely believe that she is utterly horrified and can't process what she is seeing as being reality.

    The pirate with the wood eye, Gareth Keenan, should be more popular. He played the original Dwight from the OfficeUK. The Commodore, Jack Davenport, played the lead role on Coupling. The UK spin on Friends. The rest of the cast was stellar.

    “We break every other law in the world, but the pirate code stays in tact!”
    Don’t underestimate the weight of the code. It’s the only law the pirates all agree to abide by.

    Funny thing about Orlando and Johnny taking the boat underwater. The lack of oxygen made them both delirious while filming and Orlando thought he was playing his elf role from Lord of the Rings and started speaking elvish. They both needed emergency medical care after filming.
