Enjoying your video from Las Vegas, a city of over 2 million with zero train service. Well, as a train lover, I get to enjoy your fun trips around the UK. Keep up the good work, you both are a good team, funny and entertaining.
I actually took a train from Denver to Las Vegas and back in 1995 or so. Maybe that’s gone now. Some great scenery near Grand Junction and a ride through the Moffat Tunnel .
@@markiangooley Just did some reading and apparently the service was closed down just two years later, sadly! And Las Vegas hasn't seen a passenger train since - although people are hoping to change that. Sounds like this is what you rode on! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_Wind
I have to confess I've gone down this wonderful rabbit hole of your channel Mr Marshall, and I thoroughly enjoy your honest and down to earth "reviews" of all these stations/locations. Great work on these videos I am addicted!
Used to be the nearest station to my home when I lived in Melbury Osmond, a couple of miles away, just nearer than Yetminster. Passed over that bridge on a bus in the 90's more times than you'd want to know!
Chetnole is super pretty, I’ve been there on holiday 3 times now and stayed at a lovely holiday home overlooking the station & every now and then you’d hear the train screeching to a stop as someone requested it haha
Since you were there, GWR have installed a quite large replica old sign at the northern end of the platform, which reads "Chetnole Halt!" (The other smaller signs, reading "Chetnole" are still there also).
Funny and nice to see Dorset in a video. When the train pulled into Poole, I knew it was. When you got off at Dorchester South and walked to Dorchester West, I realised you had to cross the railway line at both stations to get to the least used stations in Dorset. At the sign showing which way you had to go to get between the 2 stations in Dorchester at the Fair Field car park, it's a good thing you didn't go on Wednesday as there would have been market stalls there. I know this as I'm a local.
Another nice video - Chetnole really is out in the sticks! Quality phone idea :) Nice to see you guys back - sad I missed out on the gathering, but no doubt bump into you sometime. Keep up the great work!
I came here to tell you about the Wriggle River. Pleased you found out it existed whilst you were there. I know it well from my grandparents living nearby. Great video as always!
I love that Anne is the announcer at mainline stations like Manchester Piccadilly and London Kings Cross, but she's also at tiny Chetnole. Every station should have Anne as the announcer. Up north on the TPE network, the automated announcer is usually this dreary sounding man and its depressing.
The few buses and trains I have been on in Kyoto and Imabari seemed to have the same bright toned young lady..."Imabari eki (station)---Imabari desu",,, and we were back to our daughter's "local" little station.
Yesterday, I did this same trip between Dorchester South and Dorchester west and also the train stopped at Maiden Newton for around 15 minutes, services at Dorchester west only run every 2 hours.
I love it! The first train you sent on had really narrow doors. Both of them out together make the size of your body. They are even narrower than the 2nd and 3rd one you were on!😇
Just something interesting to point out: the two GWR trains you were on were 150219 and 150263. A couple of days ago they were the two units working my train home plus 153318 which was locked and out of service.
Brilliant video as always. The best 'onward travel information' board is, by far, Berney Arms. There is literally nothing on it, apart from the river, RSPB reserve, windmill and (closed) pub.
Learnt something new here then, that the 150's are called Sprinters. Totally my favourite trains these are, especially 150001 and 150002 which I am seeing all the time when I go to photograph trains going along the GWR :p
Me and the Turner boys, plus John Peach who lived at Church Cottage (where we played soccer with gravestones as goalposts) used to put the old big pennies and half-penny pieces on the track and wait for a train to pass and squish them flat. Oh the 70s were fun!
Currently standing on the platform at Chetnole. Phone has gone & litter bin now entombed in plastic cover!! Hmm. Maybe someone has taken exception to Geoff's videos!! Station has had a nice repaint though - now all in white. AND its acquired a 2nd TOC! SWR now runs a single train in both directions on Summer Saturdays &. Bank Holidays. Did not run in 2020 though, due to Lockdown.
Geoff! The Weymouth Harbour Tramway is still an active railway on the public roads through Weymouth town and Harbour with the last train being in 1999! Weymouth Harbour Station is technically abandoned but still exists along with the platform.
tirandys Remember they didn't get off at most of them, and the fact they have all day to spend there as well unlike the schedule they where on with ATS.
It keeps the rain and weather out and the warmth in if the door doesn't need to open. The guard needs to release the door (the beeping and flashing button).
As far as I know, there have never been trains on the mainline where the doors are opened for you, as TheCaptScarlett says, it's mostly to keep the weather outside etc. The driver or conductor (depending) releases the lock and the passenger opens. Except on the London Underground of course where they're all opened for us... Definitely seen a few Londoners struggling with the alien task of pressing the open button!
It would've been shot in 1080i then, which is the same width of 1080p but only has 720 vertical lines, as opposed to 1080, and each frame at 1080p alternates lines. Hence watching it at 720p solves this as it means that there are only 720 vertical lines anyway, negating the issue.
I saw this station while out on route doing my delivery job and wondered if this was the least used station in Dorset and if Geoff had been there. Looks like I was right.
Should of checked out the Ordnance Survey Fundamental Benchmark up on the road by the layby on your walk. BTW Maiden Newton Station was the fictional station Marlbury in To The Manor Born.
What happened to the pub? You could have walked to the pub, had a couple of pints of fine West Country bitter (or cider even). But no! What do you do? Call some bloke from Luxembourg😄 I'm still waiting for All the Pubs Near All the Stations.
Hello Simon from luxemburg, also this video is 13:37 long, i think this video (and type) and its viewers are very up my street (or should that be on my station?), get the feeling theres a lot of scishow and standupmaths subscribers here.
This video is nice and all, but when are you going to visit the Isle of Wight? :) Nice to see the return of Least Used Stations. Can't wait for next year's updates once this year is done.
Am wondering which is the least used most awkward (least frequent service), and the least used least awkward station (i.e. most frequent services) - and wondering if that might be Swale in Kent.
"I went to Chetnole station the other day"
"In Dorset?"
"Yes, I'd recommend it to anybody"
is it my fault i dont get it???

rick081956 thanks Rick, nice comment - appreciated! 👍
rick081956 But monorail.....
Uh, as they say in the Wikis, [Citation Needed]. Lots of people keep proposing a SoCal to Vegas train, but it never actually happens.

The legend says that it's still ringing today!
The legend is correct I hear it still
This is my favourite "least used stations" video. That almost surreal feeling when the train pulls away at 6:53 - and then they were all alone!
I have to confess I've gone down this wonderful rabbit hole of your channel Mr Marshall, and I thoroughly enjoy your honest and down to earth "reviews" of all these stations/locations. Great work on these videos I am addicted!
Absolutely lovely...the peace and tranquility once you step off the train at Chetnole and all you can really hear are the birds tweeting.
Ah, bliss...
I'm from Yeovil and have literally never seen anyone so excited to get off at Chetnole. Brilliant.
Love the pay phone thing!
If I ever be able to visit Britain, I now know a very spot to visit! Thank you very much for this video! :)
Used to be the nearest station to my home when I lived in Melbury Osmond, a couple of miles away, just nearer than Yetminster. Passed over that bridge on a bus in the 90's more times than you'd want to know!
What a fascinating piece of film!!! I am hooked since watching two films.. Thank you... John
The return of least used stations!🎉🎉
Now we need him to get back to 'Top 10 Least Used Stations in London', he stopped at number 6.
Chetnole is super pretty, I’ve been there on holiday 3 times now and stayed at a lovely holiday home overlooking the station & every now and then you’d hear the train screeching to a stop as someone requested it haha

All the payphones!
Missed the least used station soundtrack
SimonHellinger You're not wrong! As much as I love the ATS theme, it's good to hear this one :)
You and me baby ain't nothing but mammals.
Or am I getting confused?
So let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel.
Another nice video - Chetnole really is out in the sticks! Quality phone idea :) Nice to see you guys back - sad I missed out on the gathering, but no doubt bump into you sometime. Keep up the great work!
Just discovered these videos. Absolutely brilliant.
Anne and Celia are the best ones. Phil’s also pretty good, but unfortunately he can’t be heard for much longer, as he passed away in 2017 I believe.
The few buses and trains I have been on in Kyoto and Imabari seemed to have the same bright toned young lady..."Imabari eki (station)---Imabari desu",,, and we were back to our daughter's "local" little station.
The platform there and Thornford used to be the platforms at Cattistock before it closed in 1966
Yesterday, I did this same trip between Dorchester South and Dorchester west and also the train stopped at Maiden Newton for around 15 minutes, services at Dorchester west only run every 2 hours.
I love it! The first train you sent on had really narrow doors. Both of them out together make the size of your body. They are even narrower than the 2nd and 3rd one you were on!😇
Went on this journey to yesterday on my home from uni and honestly got so excited when i realised chetnole was on the line
Somebody should go to Chetnole tomorrow and see if the phone is still ringing.
Just something interesting to point out: the two GWR trains you were on were 150219 and 150263. A couple of days ago they were the two units working my train home plus 153318 which was locked and out of service.
The slopey-down section. I love this technical talk.
YES! The return of Least Used Stations!
#alltheleastusedstations
Brilliant video as always.
The best 'onward travel information' board is, by far, Berney Arms. There is literally nothing on it, apart from the river, RSPB reserve, windmill and (closed) pub.
Just so much fun! Who knew Simon from Luxembourg would be watching! Happy days!
Legend has it...
People are still calling the pay phone.
Taking nerdiness to a whole new level of entertainment. Well done.👌
...by which you mean "erudition" :-))
Hooray, more least used stations! Glad to see this back.
It's baaaaack! Welcome back #LeastUsedStations!
Next time I am in the UK I am so going to Chetnole just to bring the numbers up!
Just as I was thinking this video reminds me of visiting my grandparents in Dorset, you mentioned Beauly where my other grandparents live.
Like the payphone bit,do that more often!
Learnt something new here then, that the 150's are called Sprinters. Totally my favourite trains these are, especially 150001 and 150002 which I am seeing all the time when I go to photograph trains going along the GWR :p
Even if I didn't like the content it is ALWAYS cool to watch couples that enjoy being together.
Wonderful video, really enjoyed it!
These videos are aresome. Thank you.
I missed heard you when you described the livery as grey and green and thought you said Graham Greene!!
Peter Nancarrow so did I, lol
Yeah, they do that.
Me and the Turner boys, plus John Peach who lived at Church Cottage (where we played soccer with gravestones as goalposts) used to put the old big pennies and half-penny pieces on the track and wait for a train to pass and squish them flat.
Oh the 70s were fun!
I like how you walked from south to west hence South Western
Still here 🙋♂️ thank you Geoff
Brilliant video as always Geoff hearing the music again just made me so happy. Can you do Polesworth next?
Currently standing on the platform at Chetnole. Phone has gone & litter bin now entombed in plastic cover!! Hmm. Maybe someone has taken exception to Geoff's videos!!
Station has had a nice repaint though - now all in white. AND its acquired a 2nd TOC! SWR now runs a single train in both directions on Summer Saturdays &. Bank Holidays. Did not run in 2020 though, due to Lockdown.
I use that line sometimes. I think the wait at Maiden Newton is for trains to crossover, it being briefly double track there.
Geoff! The Weymouth Harbour Tramway is still an active railway on the public roads through Weymouth town and Harbour with the last train being in 1999!
Weymouth Harbour Station is technically abandoned but still exists along with the platform.
Dropped pin

Thanks for bringing this back. Awesome.
Since you've been to all the stations already, does a least-used station feel like an anticlimax?
tirandys Remember they didn't get off at most of them, and the fact they have all day to spend there as well unlike the schedule they where on with ATS.
Lonely phone ring---Great ending-Love it!
Nice! I still only need to do Arnemuiden in Zeeland and I did all 12 in the Netherlands :)
I love that they have plastered the old trains with "South Western Railways" but inside all the doors and seats still say "South West Trains".
I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!! BEST CHANNEL ON TH-cam
So the passengers have to open the doors? The conductors don't it? That's rather odd since here in the US, the conductors open the doors.
Same here in Singapore
It keeps the rain and weather out and the warmth in if the door doesn't need to open. The guard needs to release the door (the beeping and flashing button).

Loved the wee "Local Hero" reference at the end.
Me too!!! I was wondering if anyone else had thought that was a reference. (I sponsored Morar Station on ATS owing to the beach scenes in Local Hero).
When you said “let’s go down to Weymouth” I was so happy because you wanted to come to my hometown
Never mind they got off at our neighbour Dorchester
This is another great video Geoff and Viki
No way! So happy this is back.
Forgive me for being OCD, but on the 1080p version of this video there seems to be some weird interlacing artefacts, not unless it's just me.
Yup, 1080p is pretty unwatchable
I noticed it too.
I'm fine in fullscreen mode though.
Edward Talbot I though it was a bit bad as well
It would've been shot in 1080i then, which is the same width of 1080p but only has 720 vertical lines, as opposed to 1080, and each frame at 1080p alternates lines. Hence watching it at 720p solves this as it means that there are only 720 vertical lines anyway, negating the issue.
I remember stopping here when I was uni in Bournemouth, I always used to wonder what the point in this station was. It really is in the sticks
I enjoyed that. Big thank you from Germany!
The return of Least Used Stations!
Train delays can sometimes allow an earlier than expected connection.
I saw this station while out on route doing my delivery job and wondered if this was the least used station in Dorset and if Geoff had been there. Looks like I was right.
Thank goodness they’re beginning to change livery. I honestly thought the SWT livery was the most ugly anywhere in the UK- new one is v classy
I just tried ringing the Chetnole Station phone and it now says number not in use!
Still got to look out for the castles though :P
Great video. They just get better!
Good luck trying this phone thing at Coombe Junction Halt, the receiver is missing on that one.
That waiting room seems like a cool place to hang out if I were a local kid.
First went on to all the stations channel at 10:00am. Its now 19:00pm and only just come off to watch this
Some say the phone still rings to this day
.... I wonder if that's still the number of the payphone at Chetnole... tempted to start ringing it to find out
And that was an enjoyable video. Superb.
I just like the name Chetnole... Chet-nole... Chet-nooooole...
The third request stop is thornford
2:31 never saw the buffets open on the class 444s did they ever use them even when south west trains had them
At 3:44 the bridge you go under is at the bottom of the road I grew up on!
Nice you lived on a bridge! Lol
Should of checked out the Ordnance Survey Fundamental Benchmark up on the road by the layby on your walk. BTW Maiden Newton Station was the fictional station Marlbury in To The Manor Born.
At one time Heart of Wessex Line did a CAMERA Leaflet to advertise the all the pubs on the line.
love theese videos keep up the hard work geoff
Happened to travel along that line, and someone else genuinely requested it. So of course I briefly leaped out, got a photo, and leapt back in.
YES !!!! - I saw this and nearly screamed !!
You learnt your lesson regarding the station phone in Acklington...
I've seen the new livery once, at about 11:45pm at Fratton, going into a train washing shed
What happened to the pub? You could have walked to the pub, had a couple of pints of fine West Country bitter (or cider even). But no! What do you do? Call some bloke from Luxembourg😄 I'm still waiting for All the Pubs Near All the Stations.
All the pubs near all the stations is a splendid idea. It could almost be a public service.
If you want to know the nearest pub to any railway station just get the CAMRA What Pub app.
Cider is a Somerset thing
In Scotland, Briech Station has 5 people on average a month on it
Great pub in Chetnole...
9:21 Not just _a_ magazine, but two copies!
Good to see my namesake station start off this video. When I say my surname to people I say as in junction or common.
Am wondering which is the least used most awkward (least frequent service), and the least used least awkward station (i.e. most frequent services) - and wondering if that might be Swale in Kent.
30th September - went to Leeds with VTEC on an 92 from newark
Is there also a town called NotYetminster? Enjoying your videos!
Not as yet
Insane coincidence, I'm currently only a family holiday in chetnole itself. I knew the name was familiar
Do thornford Yetminster and chetnoles request stop
