    I love the fig propagating, I have about 10 in my back yard but I did them the hard way....by aeration. They are producing, but not that many. You are teaching me so much. You said earlier it was addictive and you are so right. What is your education, you are too smart not to have a degree in horticulture or something.....I was to get some cuttings off of my trees.........I am getting exciting again, like when i was young.....LOL.......All b/c of you.....Thank you so much....Keep it up.....

      Glad you're getting the spring fever. Plants are so much fun to work with. Everything I do here is self taught over the years because I just love growing things. I read everything I can get my hands on that has to do with gardening and I put it into practice. I also have a nursing degree and work in a local hospital.

    Mike,Well I cut a few sticks from a Rhodie bagged and wrapped the base. So we'll see what happens in about 30 days. Not sure of the variety got them from a neighbor's old plant. Also did some cuttings so I might be planting a few down the road (Purple Flower). Love the plant, always have. I always called them Mountain Laurel. Use to see lots of white ones in the North Carolina mountains. Imagine they are related. You can tell I'm not an expert. But I have learned a lot since watching your great films. Thanks,Jeff

      Right on Jeff, glad to hear you're doing some experimenting with cuttings. I've heard rhododendrons being called mountain laurel as well and would love to make it over to your side of the country eventually. I've seen pictures of rhododendrons covering the Smokey Mountains and it looks beautiful. Hope you're doing well my friend and thanks for the really positive comment.

      Thanks for the positive comment! I really enjoy making videos this way when it works out because it drives me nuts to get into a good video and then your cut off from how it ends up for weeks or months. It makes my brain get a little jumbled up though trying to keep track of all the video clips over several months but the end result is good. Yep, I'm really getting into these figs and my wife and I are planning a trip to a nursery 2 hours south of us to pick up 4 new varieties. That's awesome that your blueberries took! When did you take the cuttings and what type of propagation system did you use?

    • @joelyboyblue

      are you switching to figs instead of rhodies? I took them in july, stuck them in bark in a nursury pot with a bag over it for humidity, they didnt root after a month so i just stuck them in the ground and a few took

    • @MikeKincaid79

      Not switching to figs just adding to the insanity. Rhododendrons are such a huge part of my life and I'll go to my grave with them. The figs are getting planted out in the orchard/garden. I'll have to get a video of how all that is going.

I may have cutting material on it this coming fall/winter, just remind me. I don't promote or sell it. I think there are too many people trying to come up with their own unique variety, lol. • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the garage is going to be the way to go but I'm in the same boat as you. I don't get quite as cold but almost and this is my first winter with them so I plant to store them in my pump house and turn on a 250 watt heater lamp if the temps get below freezing. If the temps get down below 20 like last winter, I'll turn on a small space heater until it warms up. I'm not too worried as long as they're in the pump house and it doesn't get below 20 in there. I've heard that fig trees can take temps down to about 20 degrees when in pots but we'll see.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jeff, thanks for the positive comment! Yep, the fig cuttings in the bag were doing well and could have been potted up but I didn't know the variety and already had a few with roots in pots. I've since purchased 7 different varieties and will be propagating them. Figs root way easier than rhodies and I don't think the plastic bag method would work with rhododendrons but I've never tried it so I can't knock the idea.

    Question for you: my fig tree looks just like this one you have (a stick) but it's taking awhile to "wake up" and grow leaves. I did exactly how you did and pruned it back a bit and took cuttings. The top of the tree where I pruned it has liquid coming out of it (I assume it's starting to heal?) but I still don't have any leaves yet. How long would you say it will take before I finally see leaves? Just trying to make sure my trees not dead lol.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is your tree outside or inside? If inside then it may take a few weeks for buds to start growing. If it's outside then it happens more slowly and can take a month or more depending on weather.

    • @xvx4848
      @xvx4848 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeKincaid79 It's inside. I've had it for a couple of weeks and a few days ago it started to seep liquid out of the top. I assume that means it's starting to wake up but I still haven't seen any buds yet. I hope I didn't kill it when I pruned off the top lol (I only pruned maybe 8 inches of a 3 foot tall tree). Thanks for responding! Hopefully it'll improve as time goes on!

    Mike, I have the fig obsession like you however I ;live in Missouri and it can get down to zero in the winter. Is there any types of figs that I can plant in the ground that will survive and come back the following year.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a one year old figger so still learning but I keep hearing that Hardy Chicago will die back to the ground and then come back every spring so that may be a variety for you. Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with keeping them in pots and bringing them into a garage in the winter, although it is a lot more work that way.

    • @gregbrooks9546
      @gregbrooks9546 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have read on some of the forums that people have stored them in a garage and they died completely. I have 2 right now and have them in 15 gallon soap barrels with handles cut in the side. Thought they would get root bound if I kept them in a 5 gallon container. So since I had access to these barrels thought why not. The only problem is I have to bring them down steps in my basement and 15 gallons of dirt is heavy. The one thing I thought of is I have 8 foot tall tomato cages that I thought I would put over them and fill the whole thing up to the top with the fall leaves and maybe even wrap them with burlap before doing that. Curious to know what state you are in to be growing that many figs.

    What is Breba?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many fig varieties produce 2 crops each year. The breba crop is the first crop of figs that grows on last years growth and usually ripens in the summer. The main crop is produced on current year's growth but doesn't ripen until later in the fall. This is important because the climate where I live is too cool to ripen a main crop so we have to look for fig tree varieties that produce really good breba crops.
