- We're going to do some summer fig tree propagation. Is rooting fig cuttings while in an active state of growth even possible? I get asked this question all the time so I thought I'd just do an experiment myself. What I found along our fig rooting journey shocked me and I need to share it with you. For anyone who will be moving or has limited access to a fig tree during the growing season, this is the fig propagation video for you. You're going to not only see what I'd do to propagate figs during an active state of growth with 100% success rate but I'm going to show you something that I previously thought wouldn't be practical at all. Guess what?? I did it too... rooted fig tip cuttings. You just have to use rooting hormone, root riot plugs and a humidity dome... That's it and in two weeks without fail it has roots.... by the third week, you can pot them up and watch them grow... keep under humidity for a little while longer gradually weaning them off and you've got a new tree.. I have done it successfully 6 times now. T works like a charm.. And thanks for sharing Dan's work with us. That is the sign of a true professional...

Always an entertaining session on this channel. I wish I had a boss like you. I worked in a garden center with very very few people who were excited about plants and nature. I have to visit garden centers and nurseries weekly and most owners, managers and employees don't know and don't care to learn more.
Hey Mike this was awesome! Thank you for showing us the possibilities of rooting summer figs. Super helpful, when I got some cuttings earlier this March, I couldn’t find any info on if rooting was possible during growing season, so I gave it a go and tried it myself this year on some cuttings I started rooting in a bag with a wet paper towel wrapped around the lower stems. It’s true they do work during summer. I had a lower percentage taking root one transferee to soil (presuming from transplant shock) but they still worked.

Out of all your videos I've seen the fig vids are my favorite. I just wish I could keep figs here, in the last 5 years someone stole my 4 potted figs, I think for the nice pots they were in. The next figs I get are going in the cheapest and ugliest pots I can find.

The unions/joints (nodes) will generally be the site for both branching growth and root growth. The bottom of your cutting is right at a node site. This is likely the reason for the roots developing there as well as at the node just above (versus along the internode).

I brought some Fig cuttings from my dad's house that we have been enjoying for decades, and I can not wait to see the results. rooting powder and some water and you made it simple and to the point. Yes, they're the best kind of cuttings. I was thinking about you yesterday while propagating some figs. I think you would do better with the really fat cuttings because they are a bigger reservoir for holding moisture in them and not as fickle as the skinny cuttings.
I tried this with a heavily overgrown fig tree a friend in Baltimore has. Two and a half weeks later we have growth on all nine cuttings. No rooting hormone. Just cut up and shoved in used dirt from last year. Segments come from this year as well as the last three years. Thanks for the confidence to ignore the sites that said this wouldn't work.

So after watching your videos today, I cut my air layers and potted them up. Good root systems. Took all the wood I trimmed (3 varieties of figs) and set them to root. Thanks for the video!

Lol it’s funny that u made this video because earlier this summer my grandmother and I planted a fig tree that I had grown out in the yard. It’s a white Marseille and it was the only one I had of that variety. Well when we went to plant it I had no choice but to cut a couple of branches off. They were still green but I didn’t want to waste them just in case something happened to the tree so I went ahead and planted 1 then put the other 2 cuttings in the fridge for about a week then I planted them. It wasn’t 3 weeks until all of them had big ole leaves and new green branches of they’re own!! It’s crazy how fast they rooted and are still growing compared to the usual brown cuttings!! I knew that it wouldn’t hurt for me to try and root them especially since I wouldn’t have any if something happened to the tree we planted. Luckily it’s doing great too, so it all worked out thankfully!! Also something I think is very cool is that as they’re growing they are lignifying!! Now if only I could be as lucky with my lavender which I can’t seem to keep healthy!! 😂

I recently rooted 5 cole de dame noir from an online fig nursery and they all rooted beautifully despite our triple digit weather. I also rooted some from my in the ground fig tree and they also rooted.

They probably wouldn't but then it's my job to help infect them and get them excited.
I am brand new to fig cuttings. I decided to grow the roots in water, then transfer into pots. Because I just needed to see the roots start growing. Also. I didnt know that “green” or knewer cuttings is not the usual parts people cut to grow. So I have 3 greenish cuttings with roots growing. I am super excited about if. The type of fig is LSU Gold. They are soooo delicious.

I’m SO glad I’ve found this video!! I have a fig tree that I need to cut down due to location. It hasn’t fruited in two years and I thought it was dead but it’s not! I took hella cuttings from it and was wondering if I could do this and be successful! I have 1-3 year growth that I’m going to chop up and pot up!! I love your enthusiasm bc that’s how I feel too!!

I live in an area with lots of fig trees everywhere but I don't have any. I went to a garden center to buy one and they were all in such bad shape because of the heatwave and neglect but were still selling for 28 euros ! NOW I'm off to the field with some secateurs and will try to make some. I potted up some rose cuttings after seeing your video but I didn't protect them from the sun and heat enough, I should have put them on the north side. I saved one which is doing great, thanks.

Last week I ordered 6 Strawberry Verte cuttings. They were cut just before shipping. Doing the fig pop method, I started seeing green the next day. 5 or 6 days in now, one has a leaf the size of a quarter and all the others are starting to open. Keeping them outside in a greenhouse. Going to be a frost tonight so they are coming inside. Amazing growth.

Maybe Mike it was that the slices didn’t pass through the Cambian layer. That’s why those slices look like they’re healing, except for the ones that actually cut past the cambium layer.

I have 4 out of 5 fig twigs that busted out with the leaves and two of them are well established with branch off activity and huge leaves going on now. #5 has no sign of budding yet but I'll not give up on it. I didn't slice the rooting ends of them or even use any Clonex root starter gel on any of them since I didn't have any last October when I started the project. I'm VERY happy with the results though. They are growing so fast now and I started giving them Monty's Plant Vantage Premium Growth (8/16/8) with every watering. What a fun time I had with this 'project' and it made my long and cold Rocky Mountain winter (8000+ feet in elevation) much more bearable, watching daily to see those tiny buds finally turn green. Chicago Hardy variety.

Hey Mike. I have been watching you for a very long time. I have been trying to get the nerve to ask you about sending me some of your Japanese Maple seeds. I have fallen in love with this tree and I asked on facebook just like you said to for someone who has any Japanese Maple trees to either send me some or let me come get some in return for a little money or some work or some of the seedlings and so far nothing and it's been a month and a half. So I figured the only way I would ever get any was to ask the pro. I went out and bought a tent and a Marshydro grow light because of your review on it though I had to buy rhe one without a dimmer because the other one was out of my budget. Great videos. I could watch them all the time. In fact I kinda do. I am trying to start a Maple tree farm. Advice and info. as well as plants,cuttings and seed are more than welcome. Thanks, Mark, glad you enjoy the videos. Unfortunately, I just don't have enough seeds to go around and I get hundreds of requests for them. Do you live in an area where people grow Japanese maples? If so, just knock on some doors and ask people if you can pick the seeds. If not, you might want to consider if they'll grow in your area. Have fun with the light and tent, I know you'll be happy with them.
You seem to be sprouting a root from your palm at @ 14:49. You are turning into a fig! Bury your hand for a few months and see if leaves come out somewhere up higher. Seriously though, this is great content and exactly what I needed and suspected. Nearby there is a 600 acre fig orchard that is very old, the trees are huge with base diameters over a foot. They look to be gearing up to bulldoze them all. Taking my shears on the next ride past!

I'm not as familiar with the winter temps in Colorado but my figs survive 12 degree temps here. and grow beautifully every summer.

I just successfully rooted some. I used sand, water bottles with drilled drainage holes, and I put them in a pan with a little water in it. I also propped up an open sandwich bag over the top. Probably took 2 months or so to root.

This is funny. I never knew you could use hard wood. I've always only used first year growth, because that's what I was taught. I use root starter powder, stick them in a jar of water. Thank you for this knowledge. I'm going to try it your way. Ps. You have a much better success rate.

Instead od slicing, I scrape along two bottom sides of the cutting. And roots do tend to grow along the scraped wood.

Years ago, a town I lived in bulldozed a spectacular, OLD fig tree to pave a parking lot!! I was SICK when I found its remains. The figs would be fist sized and DELICIOUS!! I wish I'd had the CHANCE to root it before its destruction!!!! :'(

Awesome! Those look amazing! I did some a little over a month ago. I actually have a video of them on my channel. But it is kinda just be taking them and the result. Not much information in it though. Some if them were green wood. Some might've been 3 year old wood. I didn't use any rooting hormone, never have. I just cut a branch off and chopped it up into pieces 😂

I have rooted many cuttings, but had never thought about rooting a fig cutting. I have a tree/bush back home (given to me by a relative, so "sentimental" value) and I want to try to root some cuttings.

Now the question....how do you get your plant to bear fruit?
Figs need a lot of fertilizer through the growing season and and almost constant supply of moisture. If you do that the first year, the plant will vigorously produce figs the following year. That's my experience anyway.
@@MikeKincaid79 I have not fertilized...this is Year 4 as it is in the ground and not in a plant. It is covered in the Michigan winter months and pop promptly comes back w new growth but no figs...

Mary Ann Scholl Hi Mary Ann. I have the same problem that you do. My fig is in the ground and has beautiful leaves every year but no figs. I also have never fertilized. Anyone who has taken a cutting from this fig tree gets huge figs when they grow it. I asked the New York Botanical Garden for help and they suggested an 8-8-8 fertilizer. I will try this next Spring.
