With Christmas coming up let's discuss what gift ideas a gardener would appreciate that could make their life in the garden much easier. From irrigation systems, garden tools and storage solutions, we will be exploring which items gardeners value the most.
The book I mentioned in the live chat is called 'The Allotment Source Book' by Catherine Foley - I think it's a really nice allotment book. It has the normal kind of stuff but also features some real plots, done in different styles.
Thanks for sharing this Kerry, it sounds like a great read, always good to nosy at other people's plot 😊
Ohhh my gosh I missed 😢your live 😱😭😭😭
This Christmas I want compost or manure 😅
@@StellasVegetablegardens the best present 😊
Hori Hori is a fantastic tool in the garden
@@StellasVegetablegardens it does look good
Sorry to have missed the live. I fell asleep on the sofa after busy day gardening. I'm catching up now. ❤
No probs, thanks for watching it now 😊
Was working last night so couldn’t make the live but some great ideas here Bethan
Thanks for watching it Emma, hope you are not too tired from work and your new job is going well? 😊
Sorry I couldn't make the chat but catching up now. Great news about the plot!
@@JanesGrowingGarden ah thanks for watching it Jane, I appreciate it very much 🤩
Yes it is exciting and a lot of work 😂
Oh I was working so catching up now.
What do I want for Christmas?? Gardening gloves 🧤 labels 🏷️ easy to please me x
Very handy items to have Allie 😂 Labels seem to be eaten don't they, they just disappear!! Where do you work? Thanks for catching up with the live, I do appreciate it 😍
@ I have an office cleaning company so work mainly evenings and sometimes during the day too. 😍 even the plastic labels have snapped so good to have a never ending supply xx
@ I’ve always wondered what you do because of your van and I remembered when we did our first live with Danny you had to rush off to work and I wondered then what you did, case solved 😂
Some greenhouse shelving stands. The greenwire type. I put them up in the kitchen in February next to the patio doors initially to start the seeds off. A greenhouse thermometer.
Yes they are handy as we always run out of seedling space don't we. Thermometer is always good too. Take care 😊
Sorry missed live 😢
No probs Carl, life is busy, will try to catch up with you the next time we are in Wales 😊
Sorry I missed the live Bethan. Loved this! Thursday and Friday are busy for us with clubs.
Wolf garten are good but expensive if you want to buy a set a once but good for gifts. Maybe will upgrade to these at some point when our tools start to fail. Get the handle and gift away.
Gifts I have received for the garden are
- camping stool but it has a big gardening bag attached via poppers. Seat and bag is thick canvas and the bag has several outside pockets and handles. main bag is two big sections and you can close it
- personalised seed tin, bit bigger than a lunch box. Great starter tin or for someone who needs two working tins - one for the plot and one at home
- personalised wooden measure for hole lengths for different plants and bulbs
- wooden bee/wildlife hotel
- compost thermometer
Compost bins are a good idea especially the darleks or the hot turnable ones. We have some pallets we have been meaning to set up all year when we got time so hopefully we can do it over winter and transfer the compost from the darlek and use the darlek for leaf mould.
Fancy labels for plants and seedlings. I have also seen a couple of people who have those sticks with a veg on top.
Fancy trugs are also a good one. for more weeding/clearing, I like those builders buckets. I reuse bird seed ball buckets and have one for the wormery, one for the compost and one for horrible weeds like bindweed, ivy and mares/horsetail. My current trugs are a window sill propagator bottom, profiterole lid and some mushroom tubs. I use the bird seed tubs for root crops like potatoes, carrots, etc.
I am starting to think Danny needs help with his trug addiction! lol ;o)
Have you seen those fancy taps Clare from the Farmyard garden has? They are really pretty and would make a lovely gift.
Hand tools, gloves, etc are always a great win for gifts.
One big thing I am hoping to get from Santa, not for the garden but garden related (if I order it during Black Friday! lol) Is a pressure canner. I have seen one in the US on Amazon that's a lot cheaper than in the UK. Also a Ball canning book. I am tempted to get a Charles Dowding calendar too depending on how much the canner comes to as it would also mean us getting some proper canning jars too.
Great news there is a plot available near you. Our is the same re a swing etc. Their god parents have one of those big trampolines, so all the kids play on that when we visit but they are getting older now. They were thinking of taking it to the tip and I said sell it on marketplace or we will have it for garden bed structures as it wouldn't fit in the lawn area they like to play on.
You could always give it a go for a year and see how you feel. Clear some space in the garden like asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb, garlic, potatoes, winter squash, etc All low maintenance crops
Will this be your first plot since moving there? It all needs to be within your means and feasible though with the kids.
When I asked at our local allotment during a fair, they said it was £70/year plus water charges. When I looked on the website it was just for a 1 x 5 rod plot. Our childs best friends parents have been on the list about 3 years now and I don't think they have been offered a plot yet. That being said, we don't often hear about what they are growing, even with the plants like tomatoes, we give them. All seems a bit expensive for us for what we already grow in our garden, so understand if you need to weigh things up.
Exciting news though and looking forward to hearing what you decide.
Did you get much snow there? We got 5 mins of light snow yesterday but lovely sunshine at last! Harvested some cracking potatoes yesterday. 2 x 3 potatoes "mystery" supermarket ones planted 28th July. 1.72kg in one tub and 1.44kg in the other. Not bad as I didn't know what they were and re timescales. I was happy with new potato size but got some nice hand sized ones! A varied mix for Christmas dishes.
These are hopefully are for Christmas. Back the farmers but not sure what affect it is having in the supermarkets atm?
All the best now and hope it's not too much rain this weekend for all but will enjoy getting back to normal temps x
Hiya, thanks for watching the live, you have been given some great gifts. The allotment plot is £22 a year which I think is a good price and it's a 5-10 minute drive but my children go to school in that village so I could pop across after dropping them at school.
We had the tiniest sliver of snow but it didn't stay around for very long. Your potatoes sound great, it's always good when your crops come to fruition isn't it.
Take care and thanks for watching on catch up 😊
