- The Denver Nuggets took Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals last night with a 132-126 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Nikola Jokic had his sixth triple-double of the playoffs with a 34-point, 21-rebound, 14-assist performance. Anthony Davis led the Lakers in scoring with 40 and LeBron had 26. Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe react to Nuggets win over Lakers.

People saying they fear "losing Dlo" if they don't start him in game 2... is not good. This Lakers team nobody should think that way. Dlo clutched up a few possessions in a row in the last series. But that's not enough to solidify your spot in the starting lineup. The bench guards took turns stepping up and carried the offense. If a better lineup means Dlo comes off the bench, he needs to be okay with that. Nobody else has an ego outside of LeBron and AD, but they obviously deserve to have one.

Jokic is a monster. Lots of people want to give LA a moral victory for making adjustments and getting close late in the game (props to them), but first of all they didn’t win and second of all now the Nuggets can zero in on the film and make sure they adjust to the gold the Lakers think they found. Too many people think the Lakers “figured the Nuggets out” and it was just too late. Both teams will make adjustments, not just the Lakers. Gonna be an awesome series. May the best team win!

Love how everything is framed from the Laker’s perspective, as if they lost it rather than the reality that they got decked for 3 quarters and the better team held on. I keep hearing about how the Nuggets won’t maintain this level, well AD won’t give you 40 a night, Lakers won’t shoot so well from 3 either. Gordon won’t be so poor offensively and in order for the Rui adjustment to work, you are assuming the Nuggets won’t make any adjustments themselves. It’s too early to tell what will happen, but those who say this is a moral victory are the same people who would say, plenty of ball left to play if the Lakers had been blown out. We have no idea how this series will go till game 3/4.

Lakers fan here. Few thoughts. I almost felt like we needed to steal that game. We showed our hand and made GREAT adjustments, but the Nuggets staff is too smart they will make the change in Game 2. Lakers easily have 2 of the 3 best players in the series, but Jokic is next level. He's the best player in the world it's not close. Last thought, AD played amazing. But we need his statline to be 25 20 and 5 blocks. Rebounding and his defense while allowing the others to score. I'm nitpicking, but we need the boards to be controlled not necessarily his 40 ball type scoring

I still think the key is that the Lakers need to steal game 2. IMO its a must win or else the Lakers lose this series. I can't expect the Lakers to win 4 in a row and Denver to not make adjustments. I don't think just because we played well in the 4th doesn't mean we exposed our entire hand for the series. I mean the Warriors thought they struck gold after they started Gary Payton and they still only went 1-2 in the series. Playoffs are all about constant adjustments. We just needed to see how Rui would do when mixed in with the starting line up. We lost game 1 in the first quarter due to the rebounds.

Look at the shots they was taking . Rui was getting easy one on one matchups with smaller defenders like brown kcp and Murray and just bullying them , that’s replicable . Reaves 5/9 isn’t more like 3/9 next games , and ADs 40 were mosty uncontested layups because the joker rarely jumps which I find will be replicated unless they double him .
Man there was no way the lakers were gonna win. The nuggets made a crucial mistake by allowing the second team to stay in against the Lakers starters for too long. During that time the lakers make a huge 15-3 run and got right back into it. Hopefully Mike Malone doesn’t make that same mistake again and keeps Jokic up against AD.
Malone needs to bring ad out to the perimeter by bringing ag to the perimeter or post up on some corner 3s.

@Nikola Stanković Denver shot unusually well. Everything was falling until the last few minutes. 5 missed wide open shots isn’t much. A wide open 3 is only a 45-50% shot in the NBA. Denver won primarily by hitting insane shots in the face of lakers players, and by making the majority of their clean looks. If the numbers were mire typical, they would have lost that game. They cannot continue winning with that formula.

Same can be said for the Lakers. They were shooting just as good as Denver was percentage wise and Denver's actually got the size to match with the Lakers, something Golden State really didn't have. Denver won't shoot that way all series, sure but neither will the Lakers.

The Nuggets have a great shooting team that will get their hands dirty, and the Lakers have a great paint team that can easily catch fire from deep. This is going to be exciting
A hilarious thing is how (as usual) they pick opposite sides in every match (the show must go on!), and Skip somehow ended with picking Denver (which he doesn't like at all), so when his segment went where (supposedly) he was going to cheer for Nuggets he couldn't resist and root and cheer for Lakers for 10 minutes :)

Of the 72 points scored by the Nuggets in the first half, DLo was the primary defender for 5 of those. Yes, both by Bruce Brown but what about the other points he scored? Its easy to pick on DLO defensively but he wasn't the problem. Starting 3 guards is what killed them.

Adjustment #1: Don't double-team Jokic. He's too good of a passer and playmaker. Lakers can't have Murray get 30pts, KCP 20pts, Porter 15pts, and especially Brown getting 16pts.
Adjustment #2: Lakers gotta get REBOUNDS!! The Nuggets were +17 on rebounds and those offensive rebounds were huge.
Adjustment #3: Lakers gotta be more physical with Jokic. Consider using Tristain Thompson for a couple of minutes off the bench to sub in for AD. Thompson is stronger and not afraid of contact. He's also a pretty solid rebounder.
Joker seeks out contact. The lakers have two great players as do the Nuggets. This series comes down to bench players.

A few thoughts: 1) there is a reason Denver was the #1 seed in the west. They are a great team with the best player in the NBA. 2) Lakers made some nice adjustments to outplay Denver in the 2nd half. Was not enough to win but we will see now how Denver counters those adjustments. 3) AD played well offensively but needs to cause more havoc defensively. 4) LeBron needs to get the other guys involved more and early often if LA is to have a shot. Otherwise Denver is the better team.
In reality the NBA Finals should be Denver vs Boston. Those were the top seeds in their conferences for a reason. The Lakers are a GREAT story because they were horrible in November, average in January, but did manage the best record in the league from the trade deadline to the end of the regular season. That is amazing. How many teams go from 2-10 and looking like a train wreck and still keep trying and never quitting (including some nice trades) and ultimately make it to the conference finals? Credit to L.A. and LeBron and AD and their coaching staff and management. That is a serious turn-a-round that we rarely see in the NBA. Should be an interesting series, but I have Denver winning 4-2.
I thought going into the series that Denver was definitely the better team, and they are also a matchup nightmare for the Lakers. However, looking at how the Lakers played against the Warriors, and looking at how they played last night against Denver, there is a world of difference there. That means Lakers have quite a bit left to show on defense, so we'll see how these two teams measure up once the defensive intensity ratchets up. I don't think Denver's defense was adequate last night either, but I don't watch them enough to know how much more they can tighten the screws.

To folks saying that the Nuggets won't make shots like that again, the Lakers constantly kept going under screens so the Nuggets guards would pull up and shoot since they're effectively wide open. You do that all game then it doesn't matter if you start playing tougher defense later because by then you've let all the shooters get in a rhythm and the hard shots aren't that hard anymore. I'd expect Denver to still have good shooting nights if the Lakers are going to continue to do that, plus if they go this Rui lineup, someone is going to always be open at 3 to get hot. Just wanted to give some context to people saying the Nuggets had a lucky shooting night, wasn't luck, they were basically open most of the night. Same thing happened for the Lakers when Murray forgot Reaves could shoot for some reason and just left him wide open to get hot.
Gotta keep in mind a lot of people talking about denver like that haven’t watched the nuggets at all except highlights which doesn’t do the team justice. They’ve been playing like this all year and only fans see this and now others are too since the suns series. Even if Rui starts, there hasn’t been anyone that can compete with Jokic for 40 minutes. If they keep AD down low for help they’re going to leave even more open shots for Gordon and others, and JJ Reddick explained that AG played in the dunker position all game, so I think he will be due for a better performance soon.
