  • Men were the main inhabitants of Middle-earth, and played the most pivotal roles in Tolkien’s works, but there were many clans of people and this video explores them! Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on the clans of Men in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

      I really appreciated your pondering on the Easterlings of the First Age (FAE). In the Silmarillion (not sure if at the beginning of the Akallabêth or in the final part of the book) it is mentioned that some of these became the kings of the wild men of (presumably Western) Middle-Earth after the War of Wrath. Considering how much of a barrier the Misty Mountains proved to be in the westwards migration movements of Elves and Men, I surmise these FAE had common ancestors with the Haladins who split off earlier and the Dunlendings who appeared later.
      By the way, it's so weird that they are described to have both yellow-ish and dark skin complexion 😅 Their physical description with regards to arm length and facial features seems a bit disrespectful

    “It is in Men that we must place our hope.”
    Not as wise or beautiful as the elves and not as sturdy as the dwarves, but the world of men started strong and with hope.
    I think this is why men and hobbits share ancestry, for they endure life and hardships with mortality more severely then the other races.
    It’s reassuring that in my dull day to day life there is a history of people who strove to survive and make life greater than it was. We all can’t be kings or great lords, but we can live just as richly because of those who came before.

    The Men of Bree and thereabouts were definitely "Middle Men" because when the Numenoreans came back to Eriador first they were amazed at the similarities of their languages. Adunaic seems to be developed from the language of the House of Beor. And the Common Speech of Middle Earth was also descended from Adunaic and the Men of Bree/Eriador.

    • @xaviermontesdeoca2440
      @xaviermontesdeoca2440 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the case of Bree, they were more closely related to the Dunlendings, do to their close relations with the dúnedain, they were also consider middle man

    • @ZemplinTemplar
      @ZemplinTemplar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also bear in mind that one of the ancestral languages of Adunaic was Taliska, the language of the House of Beor. What vocabulary we have seems to point to it being a bit different from what became Adunaic, sharing a few elements, and much of the later added vocabulary of Adunaic also having a mostly Quenya influence. Westron itself seems like a further evolution of Adunaic (e.g. uses a "v" instead of an Adunaic "w"), mixed with some separately further evolved languages of Middle-earth, both related (languages of Edain remnants who did not go to Númenor, Dunleding and Bree-men who shared some cultural and linguistic ancestry) and unrelated or more distantly related (the Northmen languages, including that of Dale and Rohan, some loanwords from the original hobbit language, or languages of long-vanished peoples and tribes).

    Great video! :)
    A minor correction, Finrod was not the first elf the House of Beor met - the Men had met Avari elves in the east who had taught the Edain basic crafts of civilization and influenced their language.
    The Edain were going west to seek the light that their oldest ancestors had seen in the west upon their Awakening (the sun first came from Valinor, where it was created, before it changed direction). The Avari had rejected living with the Valar and didn't know or care much about them and the West, so upon meeting Finrod (a mighty Light-elf that Men might well mistake for a god at first, with his shining eyes and overwhelmingly beautiful music) the Edain learned not only more advanced crafts, but learned about Valinor and the origin of the light which they had been seeking on their centuries-long journey. And since the Noldor were the Elves most into historical recordkeeping, them meeting Men marks the beginning of truly recorded mannish history.

    There is a human equivalent of elven fathers Imin, Tata and Enel. These are brothers Ermon and Elmir who were discovered by an elf called Nuin of what are presumably the Avari. It's in the "Book of Lost Tales part two" as part of tale of Gilfanon. After the death of Nuin in battle against servants of Morgoth some of these elves led by Tereg went west and aided Noldor in their battles with Morgoth and that's how Noldor heard of this story about the first humans. Sure many consider these early tales uncannonical but so many details from The Book of the Lost tales are actually frequently mentioned when analyzing stories and characters that are canon especially when there is not any alternative. Many fans are not aware of this.

      The One Ring RPG (1st edition in particular) used them in very interesting ways. They're one of the smaller Northmen nations and the game portrays them as friends and even occassional helpers of Radagast. I liked the art style used for their faction (illustrated by Jon Hodgson). They had a simpler and less wealthy culture that some of their neighbours, but by no means unsophisticated. Something of a halfway point between their Barding and Beorning cousins (the well-made clothing, weapons, etc. of the former, the backwoods knowledge and skills of the latter).

      @@ollaniuspius1211 his world building was focused on Middle Earth and his not-allegory on evil and the world. I think that’s why Robert Jordan is often spoken of as having “revealed” the world of Tolkien beginning with Eye of the World. His creatures are few in variety yet so singularly epic. His “cave troll” was a DnD Ogre. By film experience, the creatures actually lessened in epicness, Balrog to Uruk Hai, and by time of the battle of Pelennor Fields, the Witch King of Angmar on his winged fel beast notwithstanding, we got almost muppet like standard orcs led by a cranky pale orc named after the most fearsome of Balrogs, Gothmog. As far as creatures, they got less intimidating. But a fun ride, with Oliphaunts. Even the orc archers and infiltrators at Osgiliath were more intimidating.

    • @ZemplinTemplar
      @ZemplinTemplar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From how Tolkien described it, the Beornings were part of the Northmen, and most of them would be relatives of the Woodmen and Men of Dale, but a very small minority of the Beornings would be skinchangers rather than ordinary (non-shapeshifting) Men. So, Beorn is a Beorning (they seem to be named in his honour), but he is also a skinchanger. Maybe his son is as well, who knows. But the vast majority of Beornings are normal humans, with no skinchanger abilities.

    One thing that may have been helpful to add (and more poignantly so with the Amazon series that seems to be taking a politically correct approach), would be a description of the men of Númenórë, who, in Tolkien's legendarium had interesting physical characteristics amongst other unique traits gifted to them. So too, while they are often depicted as having dark hair, Tolkien in contrast described them as being a fair haired, fair skinned, and light eyed people similar to the Vanyar for your elvish comparison.

    I am mid way from reading the Silmarillion. I have to say I am a bit disappointed in the Valar. They seemed to forsake the Easterlings almost doomed them into darkness where Melkor/Morgoth essentially had a monopoly of influence among them. Heck, even the Dunedain being blesses with their own isolated realm (Numernor) would eventually succum to the dark influence of Sauron. What chance did the Easterlings have? That being said I live Tolkien the entire universe fantasy is nothing short of a masterpiece. I am truly in awe how one man could of come up with it all. So much drama, mystery, hope, glory, despair, and depth to the entire storyline.

    I would say that the 'men of darkness' have a lot of relation to the 'men of twilight' And when it comes down to it just like in our own world where humans all spread from a single space and adapted over time the base qualities are very much the same across all men of ME. The Easterlings and Southrons of the third age are not more prone to evil, and their fall into darkness has more to do with where they settled not any innate evil within them. Same can be said for the Elves, we don't know much about the Avari, but they clearly don't play a very big role and perhaps never fully ally with Morgoth but they never take the charge to fight the Shadow directly.

    Who can blame men for falling for Morgoth's propaganda? From the point of view of men, elves were favored over them. The elves were immortal, they didn't get sick, they were ambidextrous & far sighted & they could go live with the gods if they wanted too. I feel slighted by Eru just writing this comment. 🤔

      @michelmorio8026 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@raydavison4288 well, their antibodies didn‘t help against the great plague in the third age, did they? 😂
      But are you sure you actually understood the gift of Eru Iluvatar to mankind? Or are you just as misinformed as the Numenorians were?
      The Gift of Ilúvatar is death, the inheritance of Ilúvatar's Younger Children, which allows them to go beyond the confines of Arda, this world. Though the phrase commonly refers to this type of mortality, death is actually only part of the broader Gift given to Men: it is one with their ability to operate beyond the Music of the Ainur, which "is as fate to all things else". With this Gift, Men were to fulfill the world down to the finest detail.
      It was said among the Elves that after they died, the fëar of Men were gathered in the Halls of Mandos, and then departed from the World for a destination unknown even to the Valar. Whereas all other beings in Arda, including the Valar themselves, were bound to the World and its fate, the Gift freed Men from this destiny, allowing them to shape their own lives as they wished. For this reason, the Elves, who must live as long as Arda exists and become burdened with its sorrows, often envy the Gift given to Men, and it is said that even the Valar shall do so as well.
      But like all other aspects of life in Arda, the Gift of Men became darkened by Morgoth's shadow. Men came to view death with great dread, and it became a Doom to them rather than a Gift. Ancient lore kept in memory by the Wise among Men held that Morgoth had indeed brought the Doom of mortality upon them by inducing all Men to turn from Ilúvatar and worship him instead.
      The fear of death, though ubiquitous in all populations of Men, reached its peak in the later years of the isle of Númenor, where even the long life given to the Númenóreans was not enough to satisfy them because of their envy of Elvish "immortality", and their wise men did all they could to try to escape death altogether. These attempts to escape the Gift were of course unsuccessful, since "the will of Eru may not be gainsaid". In the end, this desperation for immortality prompted the last King, Ar-Pharazôn, to take a great fleet to the Undying Lands in an attempt to wrest them from the Valar, falsely believing that these lands held the secret of obtaining everlasting life. But Ar-Pharazôn's hopeless quest for immortality brought its opposite to his people: Númenor was utterly destroyed, and the "Doom of Men" was visited upon all its inhabitants.
      However, those Men with the greatest understanding treated death as the Gift it was originally intended to be, and when their time came gladly gave themselves up to it. For example, the earlier Rulers of Númenor in the Second Age, and Aragorn in the beginning of the Fourth Age, accepted the Gift at the natural end of their lives.
      The gift of death is actually freedom... whereas the „immortality“ of elves & the Ainur is actually predestination and some sort of being slave/servant to it

      Sometimes immature people, usually teenaged boys try so hard to be wise & knowledgeable that they end up falling flat on their faces & just sound foolish.

      But let me return the favor... just responding to a single phrase, which was merely sarcasm - and not meant to be taken seriously - which immature people often don‘t get, clearly is a sign of insecurities and personal weakness!

      It is interesting to see your point of view of preservation and pureness, when the bloodlines & people you talk about are actually a melting pot of 2 different species and at least 6 different clans of these 2 species! Who each has distinctive but very different characteristics
      Remember Gandalf talking about the Dunedain kings valuing their forbearers, what they accomplished and lineages higher then their descendants and their own future... they declined due to this behaviour to the point where they weren‘t capable of rising up again...

      @@michelmorio8026 Yes, when the Kings forgot to have children, their genetic lines failed, and their king ships were taken over “by LESSER MEN.” . Further, the long lived Neumanorians (sp) mixed with lesser peoples and lost their gift of long life. Elves, if they mixed with men, had to decide between the blood to follow, one way made you mortal and one way made you immortal. Tolkien made it explicit in Aragorn’s handling of the Dead, stating only a man who was a direct descendant of Isildur could be both King AND command the dead, releasing them from their Oath, AND wield Anduril. “I am isildur’s heir. Fight for me and I shall hold your oaths fulfilled.”
