Remember, when Elwing jumped to the sea, to save the simaril from the enemy, it was Ulmo who saved her and change her to be a bird and found by Earendil, her husband in his boat. One of the most heroic moments for me. Besides, maybe it is Ulmo who hides the simaril lost in the sea, for safekeeping, so one could covet it anymore.

    "The sea calls us home"
Yay! My absolute favorite of the valar! I've always admired and loved how he helped and loved the people of middle earth and did his own thing while most just stayed in Valinor. Manwe may have been most in mind as Eru but I feel Ulmo was the most at heart like him. And when Eowyn spoke of the great wave in the films I like to think she's unknowingly speaking of him :)

I really love ulmo as well. He always helped the free peoples. This is also the reason why I liked Orome. He still remained in middle earth and hunted evil beasts even when the valar abandoned it. In fact Orome has just as much of an epic tale as ulmo. His dog helped shape the events of the silmarillion

He is the one who defend Earendil when he came to Valinor for plea with Valar, showing how much he sided with children of Iluvatar rather than his own kin.

Am I the only one who hears ocean waves in the background?
The Prancing Pony Podcast once brought up the idea of Ulmo being paired with Nienna since they're both single and are associated with water. They even said that you wouldn't be able to notice Nienna's tears since she would be underwater LOL

I've in a lot of pictures of Ulmo that he wields a weapon similar to a trident. This is probably done to make him look more like the Greco-Roman god of the seas Poseidon/Neptune, even though I've never found anything saying that Ulmo had such a weapon. Also, Ulmo really cared about the Free Peoples, whereas Poseidon/Neptune is depicted as being more violent, arrogant and moody. So, I guess that Tolkien's closest equivalent of Poseidon/Neptune is actually Ossë, not Ulmo.
Regardless, this video is just so beautiful. The music and the sound of the sea is just so relaxing, and Ulmo really busted his balls for the Free Peoples. Keep up the great work, Yoystan!

Ulmo is the only valar still present here in this world with his 2 Maia followers, when the purpose of Eru Ivlivatar is made clear on the doom of men, the final battle at the end of time occurs, and Arda is remade to perfection with the final music of the Ainar everything will be made clear the the rest of the Valar and Maia return.
I gather a few humans hero's, will come back from that other place the fate of man to help in the final battle against the first dark lord.

I come from a family that loves and adores all of Tolkien's work, as such when i was a child i was introduced to Tolkien's world by my father and my grandfather who among all my family loved it the most, they let me start by Silmarillion. The stories they would tell would always captivated my attention, heart and thoughts. My father loved Urome the most and it is by him i was taught to hunt and horse riding, many times i rode horses across my land, in my thought role playing as Urome who hunts down evil creatures of Morgoth under star lit beleriand. My grandfather on the other hand loved Ulmo the most because of the reasons provided in this video. From him i found the love for the oceans. As such i had many hobbies because of different interests of my family. Such fond memories that will last for a life time, we went to camp together in the wilderness, braved sea and crawled in the caves, pretending that it was caverns of Moria. We used to have dedicated days in a month where we would read our favorite passages of either Silmarillion, Hobbit or LOTR trilogy. We even watched all of Peter Jackson movies in the cinema together. We all smiled and talked about everything, we were just all nerds and were proud of it. Shortly after the "battle of five armies" my grandfather passed away into light. He wished that his ashes to be released in the ocean, it is there where i feel closest to him and pretend that iam listening to the music of the sea. But my personal favorite of all the Valar is mother Yavanna. Can't help that i love nature the most.
I so can't wait for my three years old son to grow up so that me and his grandfather introduce him to Tolkien's world. It's a very beautiful fictional world that relates closely to ours.

IMO melkor was supposed to be the Vala of Fire, of change. Because:
      1) earth for Aule, wind for manwe, water for ulmo, it stands to reason that there should have been a vala of fire
      2) because he was appointed the vala of fire, melkor believed he should be given the flame imperishable, hence he overstepped and ultimately turned evil
      3) the first thing he did was to manipulate temperature to create ice and cloud, using his fire powers

@@timothywong7280 You've made some good points, though I too always believed that Melkor was supposed to represent change. And I suppose the fire and magma that Melkor possessed as part of his powers represented the metaphorical fire within him that were his emotions and feelings which perhaps only Fëanor came close to or even rivaled. Furthermore, I suppose darkness was also apart of Melkor's domain since he is darkness and evil incarnate and I wouldn't be surprised if that was something he had since his creation. Add to all that with what I've stated in my earlier comment about it being stated in the Ainulindalë that Melkor had parts of all the powers and abilities of all of the Valar and having the greatest amount of power and knowledge before Melkor became as diminished as he was slowly but surely throughout the eons to come which we could perhaps see happening as early as when he first arrived upon Arda after having likely corrupted regions of Eä with his power and essence as stated in Morgoth's Ring before eventually doing the same with Arda and his many servants. And then, as stated in Morgoth's Ring as well, Melkor was already so weakened by the time the Battle of the Powers took place during the siege of Utumno that he was now weaker than Manwë after having been more powerful than all of the Valar combined or something like that. I apologize for going off topic here, got carried away there.

@@MenoftheWest I created that theory for myself on the first reading of the Silmarillion.
There were too many similarities (to Tuor/Turgon/Finrod for instance):
Boromir speaks at the Council of Elrond..."when the Enemy returned our folk were driven from ITHILIEN...I was in the company that held the bridge (at Osgiliath, hence the river).
*FOR ON THE EVE ON THE SUDDEN AUSSAULT*, a dream came to my brother in a troubled sleep."
They were at the river Anduin, at the bridge of Osgiliath when the first time Faramir dreamt the summons to Imladris.
Then, of course the way the message is made. "Go some place" (Tuor anyone?)
Then of course we have that sentence here, following right after: "the eastern sky grew dark and in THE WEST A PALE LIGHT LINGERED (The WEST, anyone?), and ouf it I heard a voice, remote but clear."
Remote but clear...Ulmo still had powers if not very strong in the Anduin river. Remote might also refer to his deep voice, too deep for humans....
Tell me what you think 😊

Well, I can't really blame him for being more separate from the other Valar. After all, keeping Cthulhu and R'lyeh contained a demanding job.
Okay, that's not true. But how epic would it be if it was? With the great old ones being a part of Tolkiens legendariem, and those such as Cthulhu and Dagon waging war beneath the waves as Morgoth battled in the land and sky.

That's one hell of an imagination my friend and that would be cool as hell I agree with you. I hope one of these days we get the valar like this on the big screen because we can really do a Justice now with the technology we have. I'm really hoping they do the Silmarillian in a movie here soon and I heard they were but you know how that goes. And please forgive my spelling it's on auto type. I think it was the war of wrath that I want to see but the war that Ancelligon the black was in and lasted something like 40 years is the movie I would like to see. Just having all those monsters like balrogs dragons and the valar are all fighting on the big screen would be an unbelievable movie to watch. That could even top avengers endgame in the scope of the battle. Which I really enjoyed.

Ulmo like many others of the Valar is primarily rooted in Scandinavian lore. I will not claim that Creek and/or Roman mythology had no effect at all but true inspiration lies elsewhere..
In case of Ulmo he was based on Ahti. who was spirit of waters and important character in Kalevala.
Most priced pocetions of Ulmo was no sword or spear but his horns Ulumúri
It is said that both Ahti and Ulmo could be heard in the song of the waters for it was born from their horns..

Amazing video that highlights how the Ainur differed in thought and process! Could you do one on Aulë? I always found him the most fascinating Ainur because he seems like Tolkien's attempt at a "good" Melkor, yet while Aulë himself stays true to Eru it seems most of his followers or creations end up working in the favor of Morgoth. Seems like Tolkien really had a hard time dealing with the ethics of crafting vs industry and all the power that comes with it.

"Then Tuor bowed in reverence, for it seemed to him that he beheld a mighty king. A tall crown he wore like silver, from which his long hair fell down as foam glimmering in the dusk and as he cast back the grey mantle that hung about him like a mist, behold! he was clad in a gleaming coat, close-fitted as the mail of mighty fish, and in a kirtle of deep green that flashed and flickered with sea-fire as he strode slowly towards the land. In this manner the Dweller of the Deep, whom the Noldor name Ulmo, Lord of Waters, showed himself to Tuor son of Huor of the House of Hador beneath Vinyamar." ""But first I will teach thee, and some things thou shall hear which no Man else hath heard, nay, not even the mighty among the Eldar." And Ulmo spoke to Tuor of Valinor and its darkening, and the Exile of the Noldor, and the Doom of Mandos, and the hiding of the Blessed Realm. ... "Doom is strong, and the shadow of the Enemy lengthens. ... And now the Curse of Mandos hastens to its fulfilment, and all the works of the Noldor shall perish, and every hope which they build shall crumble. The last hope alone is left, the hope that they have not looked for and have not prepared. And that hope lieth in thee; for so I have chosen."

Ulmo speaks of his Ultimate Purpose according to the Music and the Will of Iluvatar: ""But behold!" said he, "in the armour of Fate (as the Children of Earth name it) there is ever a rift, and in the walls of Doom a breach, until the full-making, which ye call the End. So it shall be while I endure, a secret voice that gainsayeth, and a light where darkness was decreed. Ulmo was decent and he never never forsook the Noldor, even though they were all cursed by the Doom of Mandos. He helped to guide the people's of Middle Earth too. Imo he is the 3rd or 4th most important.
I give more props to Tulkas, who is literally the reason why Melkor isn't ruler of all Arda. In fact, before Tulkas came, Melkor was literally in charge of everything and nobody could do a damn thing about it because he was more powerful than all the Valar combined. Tulkas came in and in actual strength of arms, he was stronger than Melkor and this massively tipped the balance, before Tulkas though, Melkor was set to rule.
Also im quite fond of Oromë too, who first found the elves and was responsible for essentially saving them from Melkor, because had he not found them, Melkor would have likely turned them all into Orcs sooner or later. He is responsible for bringing many of them to Valinor.
Also have to give props to Yavanna, if not for her, then much of the damage that Melkor had done during the years of the two lamps would never have been undone, this and ultimately, her ents played a vital role in the War of the Ring.
Ulmo was great but i seriously believe that others played a bigger part in actually saving the elves and to a lesser extent, men too.
