Failfishes was RuneScape's most notorious hacker. For years he would steal and sell RuneScape gold while building a loyal fanbase on TH-cam. So why did he disappear from the game forever? Today we find out.

I still played Wizard101 (and I'm a Death Main too!) for a while, but haven't played since they released the final world before Karamelle. I hope the game gets more players after being advertised by you! W00t!
Wow. I am actually shocked to see a Wizard101 ad, but a welcomed one. Ngl I haven't played it since like when Pirates of the Caribbean Online was still alive. I might check it out with the link.
I mean, I'll take this over some gaudy mobile trash.
dont click anylinks!! BE AWARE!!
I'm not clicking that link RYAN
Ive never really thought about it, but early 2000's internet was literally the wild west. The kids using it today have no idea. I turned 33 this year and remember using instant messengers, checking myspace, loading swift switch, playing on miniclip at school. Things were so different.
Mini clip was the shit man
33 here too. It really was an 'anything goes' world online back in the late 90s and early '00s. Hamsterdance, obnoxious myspace pages with sound effects + pirated songs + a dozen or more animated HTML effects, backgrounds, mouse trails, and gifs. Limewire, prime Newgrounds, staying up for days until your eyes were bleeding reading forum posts on Internet connection speeds that we'd scoff at today. If you have any nostalgia for that era, you should check out a game called Hypnospace Outlaw, it's like a time machine.
Haven't thought of mini clip in so long. Wow that was a lot of memories unlocked in one instance lol ty sir
im 25 and was active on the net heavily from 07 onwards. learned quickly not to trust and be smart about it at about 10 years old as i had lots of 14 year old friends or older from runescape to learn from.. good times
I have destroyed more than 1 computer with kazaa and limewire lol
Give a man a phishing website and he's rich for an hour. Teach a man how to phish and the FBI is at his doorstep.
Teach a man how to RAT and youll find him following you home from work the next night.
underrated
What FBI. Nothing came on it. The outcome of the story was so bull. This video is bad.
There's a detail you missed.
The scam would work as a 'worm'. Player A would get hacked and then he would go through Player A's friend list. So when you get your friend messages you about a clan, it's far less sus. I fell for this exact scam. I lost my sara sword back in '09 from this scam
Facts.
If someone I added for any reason messages me out of nowhere it's more sus than a random lmao.
I imagine you saying "back in 09" like it was Viet'nam' lmao
wow. i lost my sara sword around that same time too, and torags. i miss that account.
He should have been locked up. What a genuinely awful person. Can't believe the apple fell that far from the tree that was his respectful mother. She must have been on a hill or something.
This is a huge piece of RS history that people really don't seem to recall unless they were involved in it - great coverage and super interesting to look back and see all these things again. Ofc there are a thousand other related scams, but it's wild to think about how prevalent one person can become in this type of industry, especially given the right circumstances like this dude was.
This started around the time me and firefly purchased fagex. Now that is a hell of a story.
It went much further than RS. I remember having issues with this on Xbox 360 as well.
Well nowadays with media being shared around as much, gamers hear all this kind of stuff about hackers and scammers that they get very defensive of their possessions, now people dont do trading at all unless it profits them. No more fair trade like "I'll give you this for this since they are equal in value", its "Ill give you this if you give me this which is worth a similar value but I still gain profit". It's like selling or buying from a pawn shop. Someone has to be unhappy for someone to be happy now.
I got stung by something similar. RuneScape mobile was the hype at the time and it was close to release. I was browsing through Facebook on my phone and an old school RuneScape ad was on my feed regarding the launch of RS mobile. I quickly clicked the ad. Being absolutely stoked about it being released I was unaware of what I was doing as it asked for username, password, Auth # and bank pin 🤦 I was oblivious to what I was doing. As it was an ad on Facebook so thought it had to be official..
After no joy, I decided I'll just jump on the computer tomorrow and just carry on. Only to find myself in lumbridge bank with absolutely nothing left. Cleaned.
Got caught in the same scam. I feel you bro😔
@jeffreyvankouwen4722 yeah careful a guy I play with got phished. Was for dbl xp weekend linked to realistic jagex site. Anyway he logged in put his bank pin in and now losses on 8b bank
insanely well researched and presented - good stuff gamer
Thank you very much!
I feel like this video really, really downplayed how illegal and unethical this all was. Sure, it's "only Runescape gold" and "there are bigger fish to fry", but at the end of the day there are two major issues: that Runescape gold has/had real monetary value, and people's privacy and security were massively violated.
If Ryan suffered no real consequences, he's extremely fortunate and justice failed.
I actually didn't know anything about this. I vaguely remember hearing the name, but that's about it. I've been scammed and hacked multiple times (bound to happen when you grow up playing the game), but I never knew anything this big was going on. Absolutely wild.
i play this game 21 years and never got hacked. Just dont login to stupid sites
@@vincentyoo6297 Neat. You're one of an extremely small amount of people who've been playing this game for that long and never got hacked. I imagine you didn't start playing as young as most of us.
@@spiritofnexhes not the only one, started when i was 9, ive never been hacked.
@@hentaihaavard You'll have to excuse me today. I've slept 4 hours a night for 5 nights, so I'm more irritable and less level headed than usual.
@@vincentyoo6297 Yeah! It's not like they've literally had game developers start stealing accounts! Oh wait...
Grats on being lucky. Not everyone is.
I had no idea this happened on a scale this large. I did have a couple friends that migrated to this once the game got boring to them, so I knew how it occurred and how to dodge it. Used to watch them do it over Skype, Crazy times.
The fact you call those people friends….. disgusting

I remember back in the day a common way to transfer gold was to die in bounty hunter with a Sara or zammy set in f2p. It would be like 2m a pop, and relatively safe in f2p. My friends and I used to transfer money this way and we would kill anyone in BH wearing Sara and zammy. If you were transferring it was easy to escape, and if you were killing, if you were competent with the BH mechanics and f2p magic it was free money. Also we used to “EP” in the pvp world hot zones with the 76k trick, which I’m not sure if you’ve made a video about, but we would afk in a hot zone for hours and farm the random loot. The best thing I ever got doing that was a dfs which was insane back then
I lived for 1 iteming and 76k tricking back then lol
Could die with 1k stacks of stuff as well. If there were more than 1k of any given stack it would be limited. I remember killing a couple rwts in BH back in the day. Good times
I remember when Blackshades went down, that’s when I decided (as a 13-14? year old) that hacking is not for me, all these guys I looked up to were getting 10 years in prison, it was insane.
wizard 101 does not have 50 million lmao im surprised they can even afford to pay for ads
Probably 50 million dead accounts lol
They took a second mortgage on the house.. Tough times.. 😢
It’s like seeing a dark orbit or club penguin ad. Very strange.
Facts lol
I knew right away it was failfishes when I read the title and it’s the first thing you say when vid starts😂
he said it so early i couldn't even hear him say it i only saw it on the screen while my car audio linked
i wonder what andrew gower thinks about all this. he created a computer game with a stronger economy then a lot of real life countries. rs is able to form its oiwn gdp and ready to join nato at %1 military spending
A Colonello video always starts off so hyped and immediately gets me wanting to play Runescape right away lol
Got hacked when i was younger, lost many millions. Not sure how it happened, however upon logging back in i was dressed in full jester outfit in middle of desert. No food or tele and a bunch of empty water skins.
Respect the hacker for going all out
Damn I didn’t expect the wizard101 sponsorship on my bingo card. That was a throwback I played the shit of that game throughout high school and college
In my 20 year long RuneScape history, I got hacked one time. Just once, when I was a teenager. It was by this guy. I put my login details to a fake forums website to sign up for a clan that did “weekly drop parties”. I learned my lesson that day to always check the URL first
Same thing happened to me as a kid bro but it wasn’t for no drop party. I didn’t know that was a thing back then. I was just trying to join a clan to play with against other clans and i lost it all. Just now getting back into osrs.
I cannot believe wizard101 is still active
11:28 That desktop background brings back memories hahaha
@colonelloRS this is insane, this is exactly how i got phised when i was younger on RuneScape. Knew nothing about it but i was with the guy that send me the "forum link" in a skype call...once i tried entering the forum which did not work he asked me to show my wealth ingame in a different world...guess what disconnect and man starts laughing...lost my bank -/+100m which was a lot back in the days made me cry.....good old days
I mean, do we wanna talk about the fact that Colonello is clearly Ryan in disguise?
The junk trading era was an era I thrived in to be honest. I managed to have a good amount of junk items so I was able to get some items for good trades + I still have my keepsaked pirate's hook in rs3 from that era. I paid about 4m cash but the junk had to equal the rest of the 16m the value of the hook had on ge
Ayy brento!
so u scammed people?
@@EJSjjh Not necessarily, it was a complicated economy that could be taken advantage of without needing to lie or steal.
I’m so mad you showed Arcanists…. I miss that game so much why did Jagex have to turn it off :(
Facts I played it so much!
its back up as a privately hosted game. look up arcanists 2
Those electric bombs used to send u flying 😂
such extreme greed and selfishness is so depressing sometimes, even in an online game. the money made and enjoyment lost was real
I literally remember those TH-cam comments and messages wow
I was litterally asking about wizard 101 the other day, never played it but, those commercials where them good ol' days frfr, love the history videos my mang, keep it up!
Hey, ive been playing since 2010 on Wizard101, the game is still incredibly active and now mostly full of adults and older teens! Game gets consistant full-scale updates, new world comes out every year.
I really love your channel man.. you put so much effort into them. Your research, editing and commitment to this game and how nostalgic it has become is inspiring.
I was the guy who submitted for consideration the security update of adding a rotating pin combination.
I legitimately hate scammers. Fell for absolutely every one as a kid. Keyloggers. You name it.
Glad they added it. Surprised me when they did. They didn't even say thanks for the suggestion but at least it probably helped some people.
Thanks for making the video
Oh hey this is exactly how I got hacked when I was young. Bought my first DFS, I think it was 16m at the time? And some guy said whoa nice gear you should join my clan. I was super excited to start bossing and have a clan to be in. Nope it was phishing link and stole everything
The StarKilla and ZillaZonka reference though lol. Great vid
yeah.... I fell for this phishing scam years ago. Boy I was stupid.
I was offered to join a clan, was given a site, realized my creds didn't work and by then it was too late. He got in and stole my 3rd age armor which was worth close to 80-100mil around that time. I'm still salty about it.
Thats weird. I'm an og player and still i never heard of failfishes or this story. I only heard about the aftermaths and jagex stepping up their game. Wonder where you find this info.
Bro I literally got hacked like this 3 months ago and they ravaged my account. It took me a while to get them from finding out my password over and over. I couldn't figure out how they can finding out my password
Maybe key log? Yes but I kept doing antivirus searches reset my laptop. They were still finding out my password and then finally I put every security measure possible. RuneScape gives you with authenticator and that stops it
A data leak from another website where you use the same password perhaps? An easy password is also easy to crack or bruteforce. Key log is also a possibility, but you'd have to download a shady software or visit an unsuspecting site with a RAT.
Change your e-mail password and reinstall your OS from scratch, maybe
Did I just see a Jersey Outlaw H3 Jimmy Lee reference in the first 3 seconds, Family?
FAMILY
I was hacked back in 2016, both my accounts got hacked at the same time and they managed to get through my bank pin and two step auth.... If I ever got hacked again now on my iron and i figured out who it was, they'd wish they werent even born. Id be so pissed that I wouldve lost control of my actions. When you spent over 8 years on grinding hard and some idiot takes all your items in a blink of an eye just because they can afford McDonalds is just........ i dont even have words for it...
Did not expect the Wizard101 sponsorship lol I always thought they just need to spend more on ads to get their player base built backup, their ability to advertise is what led to their initial success to begin with.
Shoutout to Ryan's mom for trying to help the other players, and those that made the trek to his house personally. Some days you're a piece of straw, but you never know what day youll break the camels back 🤘🏽
What a surprise the hacker used to be a pker😂
Never played RuneScape in my life but I dig your content. Subbed.
when i was 11 years old my computer got somehow hacked. At the time I was playing runescape doing dungeoneering and suddenly my pc got restarted without no reason. Then when it opened back, a text screen showed up with hacker threatening me to give him my bank PIN code or he will destroy all my computers file. I immediately pulled the power cable from my computer and didnt play for a week. I think I was one of his victims, who knows.
Been there myself a chat window appeared probably 2009 possibly did you have a unlegit version of Windows at the time ? I plugged my pc myself and reformatted straight away 😂😂
Swiftkit , That has some nice nostalgia with me!
The Internet really was the wild west back then. That combined with being young was a terrible combination 😭
I got scammed a few times early into my RuneScape career for being entirely too trusting. Everything back then truly was a different time.
younger me was all about going to clan wars with rune armor feeling like a badass, i did not even know this happened.
I got scammed for 50mill this way when I was like 12 years old. It devastated me at the time. I think people like this are a risk to the public, not just a video game. He should be put away for a minimum of 10 years
i got scammed on 2 mil on f2p and was very sad

Lol yeah we'll make sure he goes to prison for 10 years because you got duped out of your video game money
I remember getting phished and losing 192m .. I cried so hard lol
14:30 remember this the next time some dude on the internet is talking about how they dont work with terrorism or how they would stop a mass shooting
I feel bad for the guy who got his gold stolen just after buying it. Poor dude.
My first 3 accounts were hacked in the years of 2003, 2004, and 2004. Childhood me wasn’t good at passwords. Lessons learned. I love RS
I fell for the "join a clan for godwars" phishing website scam back around this time. Told me to post on forum, so I logged in on the fake website and an error message popped up. I log back into RS and they said must be bug that I couldn't post on forum and just told me to put my best gear on and fight them at the duel arena to become a clan member. So you gear up and log out to hop worlds and then your password was changed lol. As a young kid at the time I was sad, but since this i have been able to avoid many other scams on rs and real life. Ended up being a good lesson about the internet.
Colonello: It may be hard to believe, but the Runescape community was much younger back then, and therefore much more trusting.
Me: Pfft, I was a smart kid.
Also me, age 12: Yes sir I would like you to double my life savings, thank you very much. Wait, why did you thank me and log out? NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
I feel like Wizard101 and OSRS players have a decent crossover in playerbases, quite cool, especially with how different the two mmos are!
...so that's why I could never sell that junk on the Grand Exchange despite them apparently being so valuable...
i've gotten that exact phishing message in FFXIV on the regular for years now and it's kinda fun to realize that people have been doing the same thing for so long. the funniest part about it though is that a lot of FFXIV players are on consoles and can't click through on links or copy/paste them into a browser like PC players could.
The very first one I got I tested by bringing up the official forums and manually typing out the numbers after the / and the post simply didn't exist, like I'd assumed it wouldn't.
I liked it better when Jagex removed free trade.
stealing RuneScape gold is literally like stealing money from someone, it takes a lot of work to get GP.
Imagine not being ironman and working hard for all your gp.
Just go work for an hour and buy 3 bonds sell for 30m.
Do that once a day for a week.
You can now play the end game and grind on the side on a iron man.
It “took” a lot of effort
@@Priest_Of_Zebakthat's not a bad idea. Thanks for giving me a idea.😅
@run8scap80201 just don't buy bis items.
Earn those.
Early to mid game money-making is horrible and a waste of time.
@@Priest_Of_Zebakyeah but now jagex is real world trading allowing bonds to be purchased for $ then sold in game for gp.
My buddy was the victim of 100m gold buying phish
9:07 just as with "real" entrepreneurs selling tutorials, it does beg the question of why if the knowledge is valuable they'd be selling it rather than just capitalizing themselves 🤔
Dude mad a BAG and then dipped out completely scot free. Absolute legend lol.
I wish I could have seen his face when his victims turned up at his door.
I got hacked like this too, 99 lvl in all skills, every item gone in my bank, and 2 or 3 days later my account got new password, and changed the email as well.
that was the end for me playing runescape many many years ago. :D
hey i appreciate your channel, played from 05-07 so missed out on a lot of history that you're catching me up on thanks.
I remember watching his videos on TH-cam. It's insane the kind of loot that he would get.
SO THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED TO Dimondowner! I remember him posting that live stream link and then never posting another video lol
"not everyone would scan the address bar"
I doubt they do today based on the number of 'quitting osrs' bots I see at the grand exchange
I remember I got hacked and lost my entire bank all because I hated training dungeoneering and was looking for a bot.
I ended up grinding it the hard way and loving the skill 😂

It's actually crazy how simple yet effective this was. If any of his victims had even the slightest clue about cyber-security this could have easily been avoided.
amazing that people actually came to his house and harrassed him into quitting.
Haha I was duped by this scam when I was young x) That and the infamous : "Hello this is Jagex mod, there's a problem with your account, give us your password so we can fix it". 7 years old me learned it the hard way...
Still crying about that full dragon set I lost
That Starkilla reference at 3:34 lol were you watching H3 podcast editing this?
This is it. around 15 years ago i got hacked by what now seems to have been "ratting". Nobody told that this was even possible and even as very clever and usually smart player when it coems to weird websites and all i fell victim to this while playing diablo 2. All they needed was me to go on a site, no clicking there nothing. Just openned the website and they started to throw my shit on the floor. Luckyly i was fast to slam the computer off button so i did not lose everything.
Never before this video i knew how it was done. thanks. One more mystery solved :D
What is the soundtrack used at 12:53 if I might ask? Sounds familiar, but I cant quite place it.
I knew someone who made phishing sites and "sold" fire capes. Helped me be aware of scams like that
Damn I definitely remember the BlackShades and DarkComet era. I believe around 2012.
OMG I think I actually fell for one of these phishing websites when I was younger. I realized what happened and was able to change the password before anything happened, but I almost got obtained.
Someone i knew would get into private servers sql and database and would take the servers un encrypted account tables. He did this to multile servers and he had a huge list of account data for world of Warcraft private servers. We realized you could enter that information for other websites and games outside of world of Warcraft.
My biggest fortune is that during the early days of the internet, most of us kids were broke so there wasn’t much to scam off us 😂😂
I'm not gonna lie definetly the most shocking thing about this video was the Wizard101 ad.
i love the little H3 easter eggs 😂
You gotta interview this guy. What a great video colonello!
Yeah let's interview the Black Hat criminal who made $6k-$10k a day scamming players and hacking into their computers. Sounds like a wonderful idea that couldn't possibly go wrong for either of the parties involved.
Maybe I’m sounding dumb, but why couldn’t they just drop the gold on the ground for the other person to pick up?
It would disappear
THE SPONSOR IS WIZARD101??? Am I dreaming? This is beautiful
Actual good Wizard101 ad🎉
Thanks!
As someone who was targeted MANY times by dodgy dudes with their phishing websites I can indeed think "I'd never fall for this, it was so obvious" and neither did a few other friends/family that played RS at the time.
Probably helps I was usually too lazy to type the link but instead looked for giveaways/drop parties on the forums via the base site so never typed any shoddy crap in. :P
But 2 of my cousins, 1 friend and his big brother fell for phising links so obviously they worked on some people. :')
having an advertisement every 3 seconds is fucking insane dude.
I remember the trading limit. people were PISSED
Insane this man doesn’t have 100k subs yet

Jagex was too busy going after the people with auto tree cutting programs.
When I was young this game was my life. I played everyday before and after school. And one day. Bang my account was gone.
I hate that I see W101 adds on RuneScape because I still play both games 😭
I was hacked from a facebook ad I saw for OSRS mobile... I thought I missed the release and of course signed in.... lost my gold in minutes... the guy was gracious enough to tell me on my alt account that they were done and I can start the recovery process.... lol
