    Fair play joe for putting a brave face on it. Nothing more worrying for a farmer than flood water around livestock. The water infrastructure like most things in this country is absolutely shambolic. It seems like every time there's a few days of heavy rain we get into flooding issues. I remember after 2007 we were told once in 100 year event which has proved to be absolute nonsense. I hope you get your cattle right soon enough.

      Got the same 100 year flood story happened 10 months later again neighbours farm is getting wrecked now

  • @philleggitt3005
    @philleggitt3005 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The time to have thought about this is on the forecast of heavey rain, we have had quite a bit of rain now, and a major rain event can only make the present flooding an expected event...

    Could you try bucket of cake, or bale of silage to encourage them where to go. Could put an electric strip fence across wheat field to try stop them going too far.

    • @margaretporter5411
      @margaretporter5411 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cattle are not used to the sound of cake being shaken, they are fed a mixed feed of silo, straw, barley etc.

      Wish we could get tractor there! Taking them bags of feed, but when they were in the water they didn’t want to move… deep water is way too scary for them to choose to swim through just for food.

    Hope all works out ok for cattle jo, used to work on farm in Dorset, seen a few floods, been working recovering cars last few years, had to drag a few cars out of floods, had a guy sit in his car and moan while I waded in up to waist to drag him out, road was closed for flooding but he tried it anyway, had people with their cars up to windows in raging floods, had gone home dried out and then come back in morning and demand I wade in, idiots. Different with animals on low lying ground, always a worry, as I said hope everything goes ok

    I use to wish we had lot's of flat land to work on but flooding is a major problem by the looks of things......here in Devon we don't get much trouble with fields flooding too much cos of our undulating countryside. but i guess you have to live and learn and watch the weather forecast closely and move your livestock to higher ground before it rains........they did forecast the bad weather

Im baffled though that you seem to be the only one on the farm 7 days aweek . In a situation like that im surprised your dad isn't there . I'm with you with the cold water issue , our yard at work flooded on Friday , possibly putting work on hold for months and causing tens maybe thousands of pounds worth of damage to a 12 month old wash plant , the water level rose fron ankle deep to jewel level within minutes, 😮very cold 🥶
    Keep up the good work Joe and crew , especially poor Andy 🥶

    I am Irish and about 30 years ago I had 240 ewes trapped on the bank of the river boyne on some rented ground with the water rising fast the only hope was to try to swim them to higher ground, my father brother and I nearly drowned that night but we got all bar ten out , they wouldn’t lead or drive and while we were waiting for a boat they got washed down the river, this all happened at night in the dark with the batteries on our torches going flat. I remember when we saw them starting to float away my brother and myself went to go back out to them and my father roared at us to get back I remember as if it was yesterday he said that he could suffer the loss of a few sheep but he wasn’t about to bury two of his sons. We never found the sheep but it was an education for me and there comes a point when you have to be sensible about what you can or cannot do and sometimes discretion is the better part of valour.
