- Welcome to the Combine Overworld!
Until Valve reveals their next Half Life game, I tried to imagine what a trailer for a sequel to Half Life 2 Episode 2 would look like... Welcome to the Combine Overworld, and their next attempt to regain control of Earth.
Almost every visual asset in this short film (concepts, models, textures, rigs, animations) have been designed and handcrafted from scratch. Exceptions: (G-man, and Dr. Breen's Face)
No generative Ai assets have been used in this project, even for the concept stage... if that even matters to anyone.
I wanted to thank the Half Life subreddit for all their support and and even suggestions during the design process and a friend who helped with retopology of the bear and the "mother" creature.
Inspiration/references:
Half Life 2 Artbook "Raising The Bar" has been used as initial inspiration for the many original concepts I had to create but at the same time, other media has influenced the design process in many areas. "Alien", "Prometheus" "Scorn - game" and Denis Villeneuve sci-fi movies are some of the them.

We’re in the presence of greatness
Screw a return to ravenholm or the borealis, the combine overworld would be sick as an episode 3 or 4
We already have the Borealis sidestory. Why not have another sidestory?
Entropy: Zero 2 is Borealis, we now need Overworld
@@IdentificadorNoDisponibleYes, we need a game just like in this video!
@@IdentificadorNoDisponible This trailer has so many Scorn vibes to it and nails the Combine aesthetic PERFECTLY. We need a game like this.
Pretty sure that was the eventual destination in old script drafts
not sure if was intentional, but I love how you made it feel like how all the synths were just 'part' of the overworld, like cells in a unimaginably massive body, fitting with the combines use of medical jargon when dealing with humanity. Showing the combine isnt really an alien empire, but a single organism that is never ending in its growth, an organism so huge that it has to spread through universes to keep itself alive.
That's definitely my interpretation, too. I like to imagine that there is no 'top' to the combine, no actual leaders or species that's at the helm. The Combine is probably just a giant, impossibly vast AI; a blind idiot god that expands and consumes simply for the sake of it.
A perfect asthetic for something called “the combine”
That's the best way to put it. There is no "leadership" caste or ruling government for the combine. The combine is a super complex series of interlocking systems that brutalizes and absorbs other individual organisms and intellects into itself, reshaping them to become just another extension of The Combine.
So they're the ultimate cancer
ye. kinda reminds me of the Iris of Gemini Home Entertainment, which literally consumes other eldritch beings in order to keep itself alive.
And I wrote this cause I just read these comments lmao
Making the Striders look like crawling spiders on giant Combine architecture was GENIUS.
its like a spider crab colony
Dr. Gordon Freeman with 25 HP, no shield, and armed only with a super gravity gun: "They don't stand a chance."
The only thing the Doomslayer fears is Dr Gordon Freeman
@@davidwuhrer6704 What if the Doom Slayer He could teleport into the Half-Life universe and give Gordon Freeman his armor for a few weeks... Considering that it took Gordon no more than a couple of days to destroy the Alliance's "colony" on earth.

@@bizmasterTheSlav Yeah definitely not but he looks like one so he is familiar in that sense so it’s reasonable to count him
@@chewy99. good point
MAN! This captures the essence of Half-Life 2 and draws up on it in such a perfect way! Incredible new creature designs, showing how truly alien the Combine are, and that even with their humanity removed, the soldiers we fight in HL2 are the most human part of the Combine we could ever see, and that the desolate streets of City 17 are the most cozy and familiar place humanity can inhabit; the sense of scale, in which even the enormous Citadel dwarfs in comparison, showing how the force we fought was merely a policing garrison. And the last scene showing Gordon's POV making us imagine what Half-Life 3 could have been...
Also, this feels a lot like the alien homeworld scene in Pacific Rim (In a good way!)
The Precursor homeworld...I remember that.
You have quite the artsy mind
What about the crazy design of the gravity gun
I loved that scene in Pacific Rim! It really concluded for the imagination of the viewers thoughts about what or who was sending the Kaiju from the other side 👍 it was amazing for cinema because it fits pretty well for the ending of that movie! it’s done even better here for half life to reiterate the combine threat using its unknown technology to open gateways across the multiverse 😮 this scene also shows the audience how hidden humanity was to this sinister empire had it not been conducting experiments in territories of science not understood! Tie this combine over world scene back to half life Ch1 and it’s the perfect title choice unforeseen consequences! This strikes so many cords for my sci fi itch because I’m starting to see the subject of not what if in this universe but what if in the multi universe has become a serious topic since in actual scientific theory it’s become pretty obvious the multiverse is real!
@@TheKitMurkit The gravity gun reminds me of the gun from Prey (Q-Beam). It has a similar design to it.
Seeing the Combine Overworld being explored by fans (even conceptually) is something I've always wanted to see. I absolutely LOVE the Striders (?) crawling around the portal gate at 1:10. It really evokes that sense of unease and disgust that we get when looking at a cluster of wooded stick-insects and the seemingly unnatural way that they move and behave. They're like bacteria infecting an open wound.
I reckon the four-legged ones should be called Bigmites.
The synth hit right there is perfect half life
Stick insects sway back and forth on their legs to imitate leaves blowing in the wind.
These things are more like a daddy long legs with legs pulled off.
They're probably janitors
Bruh, this is EXACTLY how I imagined the Combine Overworld to be! I really love all the unique synth designs, and the sheer magnitude of everything presented. Also, in this interpretation, is the Overworld just a local command center/nexus or the real “capital” of the Combine?
This shown here is just one of MANY interdimentional-portal generators. Many of them operate simultaneously whenever a massive attack is occurring. We happened to look at the one being managed by "BreenGrub"
By the way, why does Dr. Breens host body still have his original body latched on to it? Wouldn’t it be more efficient to just completely transfer Breens consciousness into the host body?
The consciousness copies of Breen were "incomplete" and "disfunctional" to say the least (based on Mark Laidlaw writings on breengrub). This here was the latest version, the actual body parts of Breen that made it on the other side of the portal in the end of HL2. So the combine kept alive the only version of Breen that did not betray them, the original one.
I think this might be intended to be one of many consecutive sections, and whenever there is an invasion they connect the power plugs to turn the portals on and direct all the troops to them.
g-mans gotta make a shit ton of nudges for gordon to pull this one off
My thoughts exactly 😅

Just a reminder that we doesn't even know how does the original race of the combine looks, they could possibly even died out but the union stayed alive through combining species.
I think they are the advisors
Just flying giant worms with telekinetic powers
@@balticbvll2987The advisors are just another victim to the combine
@HideorEscape According to Marc Laidlaw's "Breengrub" posts, meant to be Episode 3 lore, the advisors (or Shu'ulathoi) are a conquered civilization of psychically powerful creatures that live as grubs, underground on their homeworld, for most of their lives. They evolved on an inhospitable planet exposed to long-lasting and intense radiation. They spend epochs as larvas, using their time creating an advanced "thought-based" civilization.
The Combine found their homeworld and used a preexisting parasitic "thought-form" to take over their society, while some isolated grubs hid themselves or escaped (I guess mirroring how they took over humanity). Now the Combine is using the augmented grub bodies for the leadership, advisor, and "host body" roles that we see in the game
@@redmanone That's fucking insane lore. Imagine being all cozy in your self-imposed The Matrix simulation and then your dreamworld itself gets invaded by external hackers
I can see a mix of HR Giger and War of the Worlds aesthetics here. Gabe would be proud.
I feel like there is a comeback of HL2 content these days.
One can hope.
What’s really terrifying is that we have no clue what the Combine actually look like. All of the aliens we have seen in Half Life are either Xen, Species X, or other species that the Combine have enslaved. So we have no idea what the actual Combine look like.
While I have some rough ideas, I could not dare portray them here. It would be too much and would ruin the mystery and beauty of the unknown.
It would be really fun if Valve did take Borg's way, aka Combine has original species but now it's irrelevance for them as original species melt into all those bioengineering mess and Combine didn't care about that anymore, others also didn't know. It has 'leader' synthetic species but just for efficiency reason only.
And also synths
I assumed they look like advisors. are advisors just another subjugated alien race?
It would be cool if they took the _Remembrance of Earth’s Past_ novel series approach and never revealed the aliens.
Really shows how the 7-hour war was just a small combine invasion before the full force arrives
The end really looked like the beginning of a DOOM game, with the industrial metal music building up, the way Freeman charges the gravity gun and proceeds to launch debris at the Strider. @@artisticgamer777 I think it's actually implied they are a multiversal and multi-dimensional empire, that's what makes them powerful.
@@Omega-tc1xd I guess that even if their technology is not exactly the best possible technology, as long as they have the capacity to rapidly expand within and between universes with warp ships, as well as utilize any mineral resources found on asteroids and planets to produce more ships, they could dominate the universe.

Horrible metal additions like torches combined with weird grubby alien fleshy bits, absolutely a fantastic job. Oh, this fills The Parry God shaped hole in my heart... It's perfect. I hope he returns one day, so I can work with him again.
Truly though, a history of working on large creature anatomy paid off with all the biomechanical creations of the Combine! This is fantastic. Their soundtrack has never felt more appropriate.
And the speculative designs like the heavy dropships fit in so nicely with their aesthetic in a slightly Geiger-ish way, alongside the unused concept art striders and everything else. Even the Breengrub lore! Don't see that every day.
The citadel-scale power conduit descending from the sky and locking into place is *probably* the peak moment for me(?), but there's so many to pick from, and no weak moments. Just... Damn.
Oh my god, i remember the first big ass strider teaser, holy shit this is gonna be peak cinema
This is incredible. And it does matter pointing out when folks wisely avoid "AI!" I think it's vital that we point out when we don't use plagiarism software to make assets! It shows folks they don't need it; people make are! I appreciate you putting that in the description.
Your animation is so peak that it will be no wonder if valve wanted you!
Fine work, anyone making fan art would wish it to be on this quality level. I like how you extended the design and some solid effect work as well. That base-of-the-tower-portal scene was pretty epic.
The idea of a gravity gun that, instead of dense, impactful attacks that require a level of precision to pick up and fire, it picks up various smaller fragments and objects to launch like a shrapnel shotgun. Easier to grab ammo with, but potentially less impactful. Good for taking out large groups of light enemies.
Holy fuck. A Flechette shotty that just launches hundreds of Shrapnel pieces is genious. Imagine it's modular and has different modes with one of them being a Gauss cannon, Thermal Detonator launcher and SMG that fires each shard in succession.
The Grav Gun could have a tech Tree and modular upgrades as you progress through the game kinda like how Doom had weapon upgrades.
It could have offensive and defensive modes where the eletrical arca form a temporary frontal circular energy shield and a meter shows how much power it has before failing
@@ArilMaven I really like the shield idea.
Literal chills. Incredible design work. Fantastic to see more synthetic focus of the combine, and every figure shown feels so true to form. That tower being a power source for the portal, the way the mechanical arm just gently plops the matter into the sphere.. wow. I need this.
One of my most favourite depictions of the Combine. Pure unprecedented talent.
The fact that even the G-Man of all beings, cannot snap the Combine away by his wishes tells the words.
Very interesting reimagining of the combine's aesthetic.
Sir, you have won the internet for this day.
Nothing can top this for a week.
You perfectly captured the organo-synth look of the Combine. It's truly disgusting, and I love it.
BRO COOKED HARDER THAN VALVES, WTF THIS IS BEYOND AWESOME
Dude, this is amazing. How cool it looks. You can literally feel the scale and power of the Alliance, an alien super civilization that took over the earth in a measly 7 hours. This is about what I imagined the world and the power of the Alliance would look like. It feels like it's a teaser for Half Life 3. I still hope that we will wait for the release of HL3.
HL: Alyx was HL3. Now you have learned something.
You mean "Union", the Combine is not an alliance.
Look like breen sending out all the entire planet size populations combine just to hunt that freeman
Anyone notice that the gun Gordon is holding at 2:50 has the Aperture science logo?
i stil; think the only way we get a sequel to half life is if theres an interesting enough story, rather than the meh "gordon teleports the borealis to the combine world and realises it too big to defeat, oh well, the end".
now they have gone back and changed the timeline with half life alyx they should tie the portal and half life together properly, bring back gordon, alyx, dog, eli, sheppard, and barney and glados, chel, atlas and p-body and have them work together to perfect the portal tech and build a bunch of weapons that will give them a chance to beat the combine. it would be amazing. valve finally counts to three.
@@ge2719 Gordon meets the Combine at the Borealis. Despite their struggles they are too late, but Gordon can attempt to stop them before they can teleport the ship to their homeworld to study it by sacrificing himself. Gordon kills all the Combine and attempts to redirect the teleport, but the process is too far along and it shunts him into the homeworld anyway. Now he has to destroy the Combine army, find their portal generator, either attempt to reverse engineer it into a proper teleporter like Black Mesa and Aperture has. Or destroy all in his wake, Doomguy style.
Can’t imagine how long this took to put together; this is ridiculously good quality ❤
Its mox…!
