  • TMNT fans almost universally agree that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 is the worst film in the franchise, and here we are 30 years later with three more flawed sequels that all failed to recapture the quality of the 1990 original movie and its sequel The Secret of the Ooze. But none failed as horribly as the third live-action TMNT movie and I wanted to find out why. So here's a deep-dive to compare the film with the core principles of what makes a good sequel to find out why Ninja Turtles 3 failed where the previous two films succeeded. Enjoy!

Me personally, I will always blame the downfall of the TMNT movies on 2 things!
1: The crying and complaining of the Parents and Groups after the first movie which lead to them giving in starting with the changes in the second movie!
2: Not sticking with the Jim Henson Workshop team! Come on now, if any team back then could have pulled of the mousers, it was them! Even then they made the Turtles come alive, that and amazing stun actors!
But that’s just my old man beef I have had for a while now 🤣

Clinton's election too. Conspiracy theories can also be easily created as too why the original animated series ended the Saturday before his re-election. It was during his time as President that adult animation could be accepted beyond even The Simpsons.

The Shredder in the original TMNT was one of the greatest movie villains I’ve ever seen, I found TMNT 2 disappointing because Shredder didn’t fight and his character wasn’t the same (among other reasons), TMNT 3 bombed, majorly (for me, at least), mostly due to the absence of the Shredder. 3 did get a few things right.
Some (not all) of the jokes were genuinely funny.
The set design was serviceable; the period costumes would convince a lay audience; and the cinematography actually wasn't half bad. Other than the one infamously bad "bungee jumping without a bungee" shot, 3 doesn't really jar you with "wait, that shot doesn't look right" moments. The writers may very well have left something on the table, but the set, wardrobe, and camera crews did yeoman's work on this one.
And the "Tomorrow, you might die" scene did have a competent level of gravitas, which...actually was no small feat, when you consider that it had a child actor (in his only screen role, no less!) acting opposite one of those bulky turtle suits.
No, it's not great; but I think the radically different costume designs, and the admittedly lackluster script, make the whole thing seem worse than it arguably was. It definitely had its moments, and it generally did well below the line.
Yes, it probably should have been better; but it definitely could have been worse.

There was no sense in making a time-traveling "sequel" while throwing away all established things from just the prior movie. The turtles acted if there were zero threat in the city without Shredder. They brought back Casey Jones to play hockey with four guards. They clearly did not give a crap about David Warner returning as an utrom, or the ooze canister taken away. They didn't care about the trilogy. The ONLY thing they did right was allow more actual combat, though it comes off overly cheesy like the rest of the film. What makes it even worse besides the turtles designs being less good looking than the first, is the high budget that doesn't look like it went anywhere, to make "john wayne" walker the main villain. The dimule easily could've been an ancestor of shredder's, and been far more sinister in regards to his son and Mitsu. The joke levels are also way too high. The movie dived in power rangers territory and came out when people wanted more of what the established movie canon was, and got a somehow expensive direct-to-video sequel. The first sequel was literally 100,000,000 or more times better than it, and given it's flaws, that's saying something, when we had to deal with a more campy shredder, and a ridicoulous finale.

However I recently watched all 3 films recently and couldn't feel any more different now. The 1st one is a classic and without a doubt the best. The 2nd was is terrible and extremely annoying. They go too far with the silliness. However the club scene still holds up well and the new Asian kid and the 2 big monsters are interesting as far as characters go. The 3rd film I'd have to say is better than the 2nd one. Sure there's no new interesting characters and the setting is worse than the 1st two films but at least the tone of the film goes back to more how it was in the 1st film unlike the 2nd movie. Had they changed the setting to an alien planet and made the villain Krang, I think the film would have been a lot more successful.

But somewhere down the line some brain dead executives at New Line said "Hey! We're making a third Ninja Turtles movie and that Turtles in Time game is popular! Let's turn this historical drama script into a Ninja Turtles movie! I'm a genius!"
I owned all three movies growing up and they were my only window into the TMNT franchise. I missed out on the 2003 series and I didn't even know the '87 series existed until I saw this review in 2011/2012. So even with my small experience with the Turtles even as a kid I knew Turtles III was such a bizarre and disappointing left turn for a Ninja Turtles movie.

There were early plans for a fourth instalment, a script entitled "TMNT IV: The Foot Walks Again" was written by Craig Shapiro and John Travis. Peter Laird has released concept designs for a version which he says would have been titled "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: The Next Mutation". Playmates catalogues indicated a fourth film would be released in 1996 but it never materialised.

I agree with most of the points made here, but there are some wrong things said.
The time traveling story and the Time Scepter itself were story ideas that had 1st appeared
in the original TMNT B/W comic books from MIRAGE Studios.
Alas....if they had actually gone with an adaptation of THAT story instead of the one that they did
then we'd have seen characters like Lord Simultaneous, Renet and Savanti Romero introduced.
(maybe even Cerberus the aardvark....but probably not)
Considering how monstrous looking Savanti Romero's design actually is,
they'd have never been able to put it out and still keep the kid-friendly aesthetic.
But then again...Terry Giliam's "Time Bandits" was one of my favorite movies growing up.
And seeing as how by the time the 3rd movie had come out, most the children fanbase were older by then anyway,
So I really could see the 3rd TMNT movie being more like Time Bandits, scary parts and all.
(in fact....in the original TMNT comicbook, Lord Simultaneous's 1st appearance
actually looks a lot like The Supreme Being seen in Time Bandits)

Turtles 3 should have been more of a follow up from secret of the ooze. It would have been nice if they would have talked about the krang and dimension x. That would have been hot. But what was it like 1992 so likely they didn't have the technology back then and it probably would have been like a big sci-fi channel b rated movie. But still choose original turtle movies from the '90s then Michael Bay's versions which were so so. Now I can't wait to see what Seth rogen does with his version of the turtles since he's working on that. As long as we get a nostalgic bits from the original into this new version of his, even though it's CGI, that'll be pretty good hopefully.

Everyone, even Splinter, was goofier than ever. That's where the bad things end. The action was good at least, and so was the rebellion story. I always figured that the season 7 episode "Legend of Koji" was made as an apology for this movie, even though the bigger reason was James Avery was quitting as Shredder's VA and he would have been perfect for this instead of the replacement VAs that would follow. Yes, he would have one more episode; but was overshadowed by the Black Heart gang.

While I don't necessarily disagree with the points made in the video, it should be noted that Ninja Turtles III was said to be the "last one" anyway. As well, the plot with the sceptre is loosely (very loosely lol) based on the comics, so it isn't completely out of left field.

But I think too many people put Secret of the Ooze on the same pedestal as the first film when to watch them all now it becomes evident only the first movie really nailed it. I actually find the concept of sending the turtles to Japan a great idea. But Walker is a total misfire. Now if the turtles had to go up against Oroku Saki's clan while learning more about the origin of their fighting style and Yoshi's clan? That would have been top tier. Fights in feudal Japan would have raised the stakes over thugs in NY.

I saw all 3 live action Ninja Turtles films in theaters (I was in Junior High and then High school the years those came out). Yes, they each got progressively worse, and the 3rd movie was bad, but I don't know if the 3rd movie alone killed the franchise. The window for Ninja Turtle mania started winding down in 1992 (when Fox Kids took over kids imagination with shows like "Batman" and "X-Men"). The Ninja Turtles were at their most popular from 1989 to 1991 (on a side note, I find is similar to how Pokemon was at the height of it's popularity from 1999 to 2001). 1992 and 1993 were "okay" for Turtles fans, but 1994 to 1996 were the Twilight Years. A good 3rd film wasn't likely to save the franchise, kids had moved on to Batman and this new "anime" craze that was starting to kick in, with the 90's.

I feel like there was a missed opportunity to make a Ninja Turtle quadrilogy. The first movie had a theme of teenagers, with Danny and the other wayward kids being tempted to join the Foot. The second movie had a theme of mutants, with the turtles learning about their origin with the ooze and the Foot creating two new mutants. The third movie had a theme of ninjas with the turtles traveling to feudal Japan. They could have rounded it all out with a fourth movie with turtles as the central theme. Four turtles, four words in the title, four movies in the series. It would feel thematically complete that way.

Honestly no TMNT film was good aside from the first, while Secret of the Oozes can be entertaining, I just wish the filmmakers would've just stick to the tone that the original had established and continue on from that. Personally, I think the 2007 CGI film was the best out of all the sequels and reboots because it returned to that darker roots that many of the fans had been clamoring about, after the original and it gave us a great moment between Leo and Ralph they had there big confrontation which I'm sure is what a lot of people haven't scene before when it comes to Ninja Turles, giving some good character moments which is something I could barely say for either of the two that came before. The real issue is the fact that it has a crappy villain plot that feels like it belongs in a different movie.

I'm not sure it's fair to say TMNT 3 is the reason the franchise failed. There was a sequel to this film. It was just in television form instead of movie form. they did a live action TV series that took place after this movie and brought the return of the Shredder and a new female turtle into the picture. Once that show failed it was clear the franchise was dead.
If were gonna be real here the decline of the series really began with TMNT 2. Even though the film made more than it's budget(so did TMNT 3 )the film didn't achieve nearly the same amount of box office success of the 1st film because they made it too "kiddie". And from that point on the series just went on a slow decline.

Now I understand why everyone hates the 3rd TNMT movie, no matter we have different opinions but I still love 3rd TNMT movie along side Halloween III season of the witch that doesn't features the Michael Myers story line

The fighters greatest adversary, Father Time.
Time killed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
It’s funny the show inspired the movie but then the the show became a parody of itself and relied to much on the original movie by putting clips of it on the intro in the later seasons.

TMNT 3 was my favorite when I was kid. But as an adult the first one is my favorite. But still like the 3rd one.

I remember watching this as a kid back in the day and not knowing why it was so drastically different and wasn't my favorite

...TMNT 2007 was pretty good...it's my second favorite, beside the first...the relationship between Leo and Raph, in both the first movie and TMNT, is well written...this is coming from a Mickey guy...but family matters always get me...

I loved the 2007 film. The fight between Leo and Raph was awesome. I don't have time to read comics but I didn't think Leo can be arrogant against Raph despite being level headed.

I heard that the planned (then canceled) 4th installment was suppose to bring back Shredder (or Super Shredder) and the Foot. Maybe some day they’ll bring that movie out. It could take place after the second movie ignoring the events that occurred in the third film.

Good review, by the way; and spot on. Casey was only there because they were already using his actor for Whit, so why not? Casey too was goofier than ever, but at least had some fun in this movie. All this was was a rebellion movie with the TMNT and co. probably to get kids ready for Lord of the Flies? Who knows? I didn't read that until Grade 12. Done right, it would have been perfect, but I can see why it was done this way just as I could with Secret of the Ooze.
