Parents complained the original film was too violent for their kids, so this and the 3rd film were made lighter. That was the problem with the 2nd and 3rd where they were solely like the 80s cartoon, whereas the original film worked because it found the right balance between the darker comics and lighthearted cartoon
Nail on the head. It's why the first film finds an appeal that can go beyond what would have been expected, even now. II is entirely remembered for the nostalgia alone and III....well, III is III. At least it had the turtles wearing samurai armor and being enough to say "That would look cool on an action figure".

It was a great sequel! I'm 41 and this movie was awesome for a 10 year old me! I've watched it with my sons and they love it as well!! It wasn't a perfect movie but WAY better than the remakes from the 2000s
God, what amazing memories I have going to see this with my best friend. I am going to he honest here. "Go, Ninja, Go" was an absolute banger back then. That s**t SLAPPED, and anybody who was a 13 year old boy back then like me who denies that irrefutable fact are lying to themselves.
The first movie was so much better. It dealt with adult themes that have aged well, but was still okay to watch as a kid despite some parents complaints. My wife and I still watch it every 5 years or so. Raphael's anger in the first film resonated with me even as a 6 year old. I was always Raphael when we played Turtles. The second one was fun when I was young, but I always noticed the lack of weapons and the lighter tone and less violence. It's not as easy to watch as an adult.
That's why for me, it was the sequel that started the downfall of the trilogy. It got too lighthearted. TMNT 3 was just an after thought. Someone pointed this out and a lot of folks can get angry all they want but at least the third one brought back out their weapons and had better fight choreography. Yeah, it may be 3 fight sequences but it was 3 long fight sequences despite the film not being up to par with the previous films.
because they want to keep teenage mutant ninja turtles' kid friendly that's why the 2 sequels to the 1990 film were toned down to a lighter tone because parents complained how dark and violent the first film was
Honestly, I loved secret of the ooze as a kid. It felt more true to the animated series with its silliness while the first movie was more based on the comics with its dark tone. I just wish TMNT 3 was done better justice by adding better story, and adding new villains and hero’s based of the cartoon and action figures like Krang or Baxter Stockman and his robotic Mousers. Bottom line, it’s best to give the fans what they want since they’re the ones helping the franchise make the money.
Same. I loved the hell out of this one, and the toys were pretty cool. The first film is great, but I think I remember it being really slow and visually dark, so I watched this one more often.
@@ScooterinAB I think what people forget is that the first one was dark because it was more comic book driven. It's almost identical to the comics. Some folks complained it was too dark so this sequel toned everything down to the cartoon level.
@@terryrocks2j True, but I didn't mean I had an issue with the content being mature and grim. I meant that it was actually a dark movie. I remember it being hard to see what was happening.
My favorite turtle movie ever. I watched it constantly growing up as a teenager. It was the funniest one also. Just such a fun movie. I still quote it to this day.
The original 1990 movie is soooo much better. It's aged very well and completely watchable as an adult. But the sequel is, while still fun, much sillier.
There’s one small change that I think would’ve drastically improved the film. The issue with this is that unlike the first film, there’s no major arc for any of the characters. In the original, it was Raphael learning how dangerous his anger is, and learning to fit in as a member of a team, as opposed to being by himself One major missed opportunity in Secret of the Ooze, is not giving Donatello an arc despite setting up one. When the turtles are told they were accidents, Donatello takes it the hardest, believing they were special, but having to accept they aren’t. And it kind of ends there. Donatello learning this, questioning not only their purpose as a whole, but also his purpose in it. He starts to see himself as nerdy one, with the lamest weapon, the worst one liners, who just doesn’t fit in with the rest. Donatello is the one who walks out on the group, learning on his own who he is, The Other turtles being defeated in the junkyard demonstrating how invaluable Donatello was, And at the last minute, Donatello shows up, believing in himself, and single-handedly rescuing his brothers with his brain, Bo staff, and help from Splinter, The moral being, the best part of yourself is highlighted by having those around you who celebrate what makes you special.
As a kid and in my late 30’s I actually loved the sequel. Though It was lighten up a little to much and you can tell they cut out some fan favorite characters for budget and time reasons. I still really enjoyed it and its better then other “meh” live action cartoon sequels.
That’s what they fucked up They underestimated the popularity of the ninja turtles They had time to wait two or three years to come out with another movie I would’ve rather had a good movie than a movie with Vanilla Ice They should’ve gotten Tone Loc💯
2:39 The turtles’ ninja skills don’t come from the ooze. They were taught to them by their rat sensei Splinter. The first movie makes that pretty damn clear.
Great sequel. Was definitely lighter. In the first movie, the Foot clan offered kids a Chuck E. Cheese that you could skate and pick up a pack of smokes. The foot had a junk yard and scientist created mutants in this movie. A great pairing to the movie would be pizza. Moment to reflect. Classic.
Secret of the Ooze was my first TMNT as a kid. Loved it. I watched it so much that the VHS tape started to mess up. Loved the Ninja rap and Super Shredder. :)
I liked the 2nd movie but I really missed the original suits and the gritty dark feeling of the first movie, they just made it too kid friendly. The first felt much more adult and it was nice being a kid and getting to watch something like that.

The props in this movie always amazed me as a kid, I wanted all of it, especially the ooze tubes. I didn't notice any faults as a kid and we loved it. I mean, compared to the third one, this is pretty decent still lol. Go Ninja, Go Ninja Go
As a 38 yr that grew up a TMNT fan as a kid, I love the first and 2nd movie. Yes the og is a better movie and more serious but the 2nd is a classic in its own way that had tones more along the lines of the cartoon. The 3rd is meh and the animated TMNT is pretty good also. Those crap show, bootleg knockoff, husky of the turtles movies that are the bay films DON'T count in my mind.
I know it'll never happen, but I would love to see a live action (or at this point even CGI) movie that does Michael Zulli's 3 issue story arc of the original run of the comic. Eastman and Laird were way too busy with the cartoon, films, and toys to write the comics during the late 80s and early 90's so there were other writers and almost half of the comics from the initial run don't follow a linear story. Donatello questioning about him and his brothers (as well as heir Dad's purpose) is a good subject that the Michael Zulli issues focuses on, as one of the turtles is near death from their battle with the foot clan, and he loses one of his arms. We then follow him through a journey that's not quite heaven or hell, while the remaining turtles and splinter try to hide from Shredder. It was really dark and had great artwork, as the turtles looked way more primal. They didn't even wear headbands. And like every issue of the original ru, it's in black and white.
Instead of fight scenes we got a vanilla ice video w/the turtles dancing 😞! You've made me remember time in my life I can't get back..... waste of time!!!
As someone from the UK I can confirm that the movie cuts we got over here absolutely suck. I never saw the proper cut of commando until I was about 27 and I was amazed what I'd been missing all those times I'd seen it before.
For something that was rushed, heavily toned down and cobbled together...I still love this movie. A step down from the first, sure, but its negative reputation is far too overblown.
In the UK they renamed the cartoon show to Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles because the conotations of ninja and their use of weapons you could make in the home was excessive to the BBFC. We never even had a cut of Enter the Dragon with the nunchucks at that point in time. It was relaxed later but was spawned from early "video nasties", particularly any that used crossbows.
I didn't like the 2nd movie. But I did remember buying a comic book adaptation of Secret of the Ooze, it was a much better and a lot darker and more serious than the movie.
So much could’ve been solved by simply saying, “if they have a problem with it, that’s on them. F**k’em”, and stayed with the style of the first flick. They would’ve made a lot more money, because good storytelling with stakes sell at any age.
Germany also got the edited UK version of both the TV show and the movies. All three Ninja Turtles movies were additionally censored in germany, but it was a weird kind of censorship. At the time the german ratings board really reacted allergic to anything related to martial arts, it was so bad that even a low violence comedy like Jackie Chan's City Hunter was rated 18+ after some cuts. So for the Turtles to get the 12+ rating they edited every fight scene with cartoon sounds to make them feel less violent.
Ive watched this a million times as a kid. I have the preview trailers memorized from the VHS. I’ve glad to say I’ve now watched it 2million times with my 3 year old son. He likes part 1 but is definitely aware it is too violent and gets scared a bit. I love this movie. Great video man 👍🏼
Even though they toned it down compared to the first, it's still fun. Definitely was as a kid. Love the part where splinter saves them in the junkyard, and shredder loses his s*it. "GET THEEEM!!"
Who cares about ooze gelatin, the real banger was the limited edition Hostess Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pies. They were green with some kind of pudding inside.
Siskel & Ebert giving this 1 star shows just how useless film critics are. That would be like food critics rating Gerber baby food for the sophisticated pallet. TMNT was never created to compete with the likes of Citizen Kane or Seven Samurai It's a roller coaster for kids ... Or the inner kid in us all. Rate it on that purpose alone
Kid me and adult me still love these first two films and even the third film for nostalgia. But now I’m older, I’m sad that we didn’t get a proper sequel with the weapons and Krang. Or even Baxter stockman and his mouser’s. Maybe one day they will give us a Halloween style reboot and ignore 2 or just 3 and give us a proper dark sequel… it would make so much money if they just did it right!!
Honestly, I kind of prefer Tokka & Rahzar. Plus they were right, they definitely made for some cool toys for us kids! Beebop & Rocksteady are fun too, but I had no problem with them being left out.
Despite what the hipsters will tell ya, this movie was great back then and still holds up. How do I know? My dad will watch it and won't fall asleep. I dunno if it's the memories (his wallet and the many trips he'd do to find the toys) or if he just likes the movie, but he'll watch the whole thing. He fell asleep during No Way Home, and he's a huge Spiderman fan...so this movie must have something special.
As a kid I loved the movie. As an adult I appreciate this movie. Slightly too goofy but it worked. It’s a fun movie, with much laughs, and a decent story. My only issue is bebop and rocksteady wasn’t in it but I understand why I wished ooz 2 had a slightly better story and introduced those other villains from the comics and cartoon but none the less the movie was great. I also appreciate the 3rd movie even though it was the lesser of the first 2. The third should have introduced those other villains but I won’t complain
Part 1 is the best, secret of the ooze is Good too. Saw them both in the theater by the time part 3 came out tmnt was kind phased out. I just watched part one the other day for the first time in idk how long been hella years. It’s such a great movie for being a b movie. Like no one in it was really stars. Shit had me laughing still too. Especially splinter training in his cage 🤣😂 and man the movie is so 80’s. The movie came out in 1990 in theaters but people don’t realize it as filmed in 1989. And back in those days it took a year or so before we got it on vhs. I live everything about the first one even if stuff looks kinda funny. I’ve never watched any other tmnt movies cause I feel like they’ll ruin it for me. The 80’s cartoon on sat morning and the first two movies are the best tmnt will ever be.
The right way to bring the Ninja Turtles to life: · Hire 4 five-feet-tall Olympic stuntman and train them in Ninjitsu, skating, bodybuilding, and dancing. · Don't put creepy, heavy, and hot animatronic suits on the stuntmen. Instead, use green body-paint and turtle prosthetics for the head, hands, feet, and shells. · Don't make any crappy sequels.
The only thing that really bothered me a lot about the movie as a kid when I saw it for the first time was that Corey Feldman wasn't able to voice Donetello. Adam just didn't fit with his voice imo.
My mom bought me all 3. I remember her taking me to the drive in movies to watch them as well. I had almost every toy they came out with. I had it all. So glad my mom wasn’t one of those parents. She thought they were cool too!
I didn't mind the changes in the movie. The costumes still looked great, and the locations were awesome. I found out through film school that a lot of the teachers work on it's Wilmington locations.
I had no idea, the second film was done so close after the first one, which is pretty common practice nowadays but the difference being now films actually have bigger budgets.
From a narrative or character standpoint, nothing really happens. But because the movie stays true to the world, aesthetics, and characters we loved, We as the audience almost look past the fact that nothing of real importance is happening. It’s one of the few sequels where this is the case.
Say what you want, I still love the movie. It wasn't even close to the greatness of the first film, but it had enough of the heart that I was just happy to see the turtles again. It wasn't until the third that the series fell completely into despair. As for the new movies, I love the brotherhood aspect that they managed to achieve. The problems were entirely elsewhere.
What happened is Hollywood's greed. The people that complained weren't the true audience. You don't have the kind of box office success like the first if things like too much violence. All the major production companies didn't want to touch the first film. When they saw how much an independent film made, then they all wanted to join in.
Ugh, stupid parents. I was like 5 when I was watching Turtles in the early 90’s. My mom had no problem with me watching the first Turtles movie, Batman 89, Batman Returns, etc…… 🙄 There’s a lot I miss about those days, but I always roll my eyes when I hear about how uptight parents were back then.
As a kid, part 2 was my favorite. As an adult, the first one was incredible.

LoL Part 3 is better than part 2 as an adult
Even though they toned it down compared to the first, it's still fun. Definitely was as a kid. Love the part where splinter saves them in the junkyard, and shredder loses his s*it. "GET THEEEM!!"
I was so happy when these movies came out on Blu Ray. I had them on VHS as a child. Brought back good memories!
I hate censorship.
Where was Casey Jones ?
I met Judith Hoag a couple years ago and she was the nicest lady. I really enjoyed talking with her. She’s the true April.
Who cares about ooze gelatin, the real banger was the limited edition Hostess Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pies. They were green with some kind of pudding inside.
This was my favorite of the 3 when I was a kid. I had no clue about all the drama around it. Lol
Siskel & Ebert giving this 1 star shows just how useless film critics are.
That would be like food critics rating Gerber baby food for the sophisticated pallet.
TMNT was never created to compete with the likes of Citizen Kane or Seven Samurai
It's a roller coaster for kids ...
I love the third too
Honestly, I kind of prefer Tokka & Rahzar. Plus they were right, they definitely made for some cool toys for us kids!
Beebop & Rocksteady are fun too, but I had no problem with them being left out.
Me neither
Despite what the hipsters will tell ya, this movie was great back then and still holds up. How do I know? My dad will watch it and won't fall asleep. I dunno if it's the memories (his wallet and the many trips he'd do to find the toys) or if he just likes the movie, but he'll watch the whole thing. He fell asleep during No Way Home, and he's a huge Spiderman fan...so this movie must have something special.
its shorter.
That's not a good argument for this movie. We don't know your daddy. XD
The “hipsters” are the people who can’t let go of their nostalgia. This movie sucked.
That's like...your opinion, man. I'll allow it.@@WorldwideWyatt
You don't need to, but Imma use it anyway.@@Treyworld
Other than recastings, Casey being missing, and lack of violence; I absolutely loved this film as a kid!
As a kid I loved the movie. As an adult I appreciate this movie. Slightly too goofy but it worked.
It’s a fun movie, with much laughs, and a decent story. My only issue is bebop and rocksteady wasn’t in it but I understand why
I wished ooz 2 had a slightly better story and introduced those other villains from the comics and cartoon but none the less the movie was great.
I also appreciate the 3rd movie even though it was the lesser of the first 2. The third should have introduced those other villains but I won’t complain
The ninja skills came not from the ooze. It came from splinter 🤦🏻♂️
Somebody has done their Ninja Turtles homework
What´s that weird CGI at 11:06??
Honestly they were both fun. This was made in the 90s. This is the problem catering just to make $$$$
*THEY'RE BABIES!!!*
I remember going to see this in a pokey little one screen movie theater
I ruined the vhs of this movie as a kid because I watched it so much. Now I watch it on DVD with my son and he loves it just as much as I did.
The right way to bring the Ninja Turtles to life:
· Hire 4 five-feet-tall Olympic stuntman and train them in Ninjitsu, skating, bodybuilding, and dancing.
I know this movie isn't good, but I absolutely love it!!
The TMNT ice cream with the bubble gum eyes were my go-to!
Nah. This was my favorite one of the 3. I watched it all the time. And still throw it on at times. It's a fun watch.
Me too. I think I like this one more. It’s just funny
@@MoeJaxon yea. It was one of the first horror or "horror" movies I was shown.
I had no idea, the second film was done so close after the first one, which is pretty common practice nowadays but the difference being now films actually have bigger budgets.
They rushed it into production because TMNT was on fire at the time and they wanted to cash in on a sequel before the trend passed.
I loved the TMNT cartoon, i even had a load of them on VHS tape & watched em till the tape wore out.
From a narrative or character standpoint, nothing really happens.
But because the movie stays true to the world, aesthetics, and characters we loved,
We as the audience almost look past the fact that nothing of real importance is happening.
It’s one of the few sequels where this is the case.
Was gonna say, "Homie, if you're seeing a character named Caravagio, you're reading Locke & Key."
I get the Bebop and Rocksteady love but I always secretly preferred Tokka and Rahzar largely due to this movie as a kid.
I legit saw this when I was 7
I refuse to hate this movie
The dark tone is what made the first film as good as it is. None of them were as good as the first one.
The only thing that shocked me was Elmo voiced Master Splinter.
